Role of Libraries in Career Development Among the Students

The purpose of this chapter is to review and analyze the role of libraries and librarians in Management College student empowerment of career guidance, career counseling, and overall career development in Trichy and Pudukkottai districts. This study creates awareness about different careers among the students and librarians towards career development activities programs. This study may help to create responsiveness among the Management College and librarians to find out how to cater to their students and enhance students' personality, skills, confidence, and students' employability to develop their career. This study assists libraries to study and provide better infrastructure and programs pertaining to student needs. The 584 valid questionnaires were coded after data collection. The obtained data were tabulated and analysed using the statistical packages Microsoft Excel and SPSS. Hypotheses were tested and findings were drawn in the light of objectives of the investigation. The results were reported in the form of thesis, tables, charts, and figures used wherever necessary to make the presentations clear, simple, and easy. The study demonstrated that one-fifth of the respondents were agreed the following statement related career choice of the MBA graduates such as “I am capable of making my own career choice,” “I seek my parent's advice for career choice,” “I consult the librarian in making any career choice,” “I consult the placement officer in making career choice,” “I consult my friends before making any career choice,” “I seek advice of my seniors in making career choice,” “ I consult the alumni of my institute in making career choice,” and “I go by the market trend in deciding my career choice.” Nearly half of the respondents were neutral about the above mentioned statement, and the remaining one-third of the respondents disagreed about various career choices. Further, it is observed from the study that 49.3% of the respondents were neutral with overall level of career choice, 30.0% of the respondents disagree with overall level of career choice, and the remaining 20.7% of the respondents agreed with overall level of career choice.

Although adolescents become progressively independent from their parents in the high-school years, they continue to depend heavily on parents in the area of career development (Peterson, Stivers, & Peters, 1986; Sebald, 1989). The role of parental support in children’s career choice has been demonstrated empirically in the career-development literature (Altman, 1997; Fisher & Griggs, 1994; Ketterson & Blustein, 1997; Kracke, 1997; Way & Rossman, 1996). Researchers have found that parents impact career choice more than counselors, teachers, friends, other relatives, or people working in the field of interest (Kotrlik & Harrison, 1989), but are not adequately informed about how to help (Young, Friesen, & Borycki, 1994). Although parents hold a powerful role in the career advising of both their male and female children, most of the reported studies use a male model and focus. Researchers are beginning to develop a knowledge base for the career development of girls and the unique issues they face in deciding on a career. Greater understanding of these issues is urgent, especially as females are recruited into nontraditional fields like information technology. This article will review research on parental support for female career choice, including the research findings from the Women and Information Technology (WIT, 2002-2005) project funded by the National Science Foundation.

Career success is the achievement and self-actualization of the individual in his chosen career path. Understanding self-potentials and self-weaknesses, choice suitability, readiness and decisions, and understanding career development are expected to support individual career success. Facilitating the preparation of individual career development needs to be pursued for individual careers optimal development to benefit themselves and many others. Vocational high school students armed with relevant job competences, prepared for working after graduation. On the other hand, vocational high school graduates are still in their adolescent age with the development stage of search for identity, not yet thinking about career, so they needed more intensive career insight briefing through career guidance. Career guidance in vocational high school should be able to build students’ career readiness, and the maturity in their adolescent age which is relatively unstable in their socio-emotional. This review of career guidance program evaluation is conducted qualitatively through surveys, interviews and leiterature studies to provide an overview of evaluation program and its relevance to the necessity. Understanding the quality, weaknesses, obstacles to service implementation, and potential utilization are expected to improve career guidance effectiveness services in vocational high school. An evaluation on the overall career guidance program, will provide feedback for ongoing improvement. Various evaluation models are available, it needs to be selected about the relevance to the career counseling program characteristics, so that evaluation feedback is more optimal.

Career Development is a continuous lifelong process of developmental experiences that focuses on seeking, obtaining and processing information about self, occupational and educational alternatives, life styles and role options. Put another way, career development is the process through which people come to understand them as they relate to the world of work and their role in it. This career development process is where an individual fashions a work identity. In educational development, career development provides a person, often a student, and focus for selecting a career or subject to undertake in the future. Educational institutions provide career counsellors to assist students with their educational development. It is imperative when educating the young people that the current school systems assist and consider the significance of this responsibility for the youth and their future. The influences on and outcomes of career development are one aspect of socialization as part of a broader process of human development. Theories and research describing career behavior provide the “conceptual glue” for as well as describe where, when and for what purpose career counseling, career education, career guidance and other career interventions should be implemented.  In educational development, career development provides a person, often a student, and focus for selecting a career or subject to undertake in the future. Educational institutions provide career counsellors to assist students with their educational development. The current paper will focus on the various theories related to career development and their educational implications.

LGBT college students need mentorship regarding their career development from their faculty members. This paper provides an informed approach, grounded in Social Cognitive Career Theory and supported by empirical research, for faculty members to provide effective career guidance specifically tailored for LGBT students. Goals and recommendations for career advising with LGBT students are provided using an SCCT-informed approach, given the unique needs and experiences of LGBT students. Explanations of how SCCT offers a relevant understanding to faculty members, as well as instructions for how to appropriately advise LGBT students in their career development is provided. Conclusions and future directions are also discussed.

Career counseling represents an important variable to better understand career intervention underlying mechanisms. The trend of career guidance in India is not satisfactory. Present study is focused on finding of impacts of career guidance and counseling on students regarding career development.

Family is first social institutions where an individual opens his eyes observe and learn. That is why family is considered most influential factor in shaping a child’s future. The study in hand was carried out in the vicinity of district Dera Ismail khan, KP, Pakistan. It was tried to probe the role of family in sense of social institutions and its role in promotion of sports. As it is a vivid fact that family has a key role in shaping future of child. The prime objective of study was to investigate the role of family (guardians) in the promotion and development of sports. 600 families (guardian) participated in this study and contacted by researcher for purpose of data collection. A valid and reliable questionnaire was used for data collection. Data was organized in Microsoft excel. Percentage formula was applied to measure perception of respondent regarding different questions. Furthermore, one sample analysis was used to check the hypothesis. Majority of the people agreed with that issue. After the analysis of data, it was concluded that family has a key role in the promotion of sports.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to review identified key features of teacher support and its influence on students’ career decision making and development. It also examines the types of research approaches to data collection and analysis in order to provide a more in-depth evaluation of this field of study. Design/methodology/approach The review examined 18 studies, the majority being quantitative in design. Cross-sectional and longitudinal effects of teacher support were investigated, and differences in teacher support relative to grade level and gender were considered. Findings Results indicated that since 2000, there has been an increase in the number of empirical studies of teacher support in the career development field, the majority involving middle and high school students. The most commonly cited frameworks that underpin the studies are the social cognitive career theory, the career construction theory and Super’s career development theory. The most frequently used instrument for data collection was the teacher support scale (Metheny et al., 2008). Originality/value The review will be beneficial to researchers, teachers and policy makers seeking to optimize support systems for students’ career development. The findings contribute to further theory development and have practical implications for the career guidance field. Recommendations for future research and practice are suggested.

RETRACTEDIntroduction. The article discusses the potential of pedagogical universities in solving the problem of career guidance in the country. The current state of career guidance is described, the reasons for its low efficiency, as well as the role of the initial stage of schooling, as the basis for the formation of professional skills are assessed.Materials and Methods. The research was based on publications, monographs, dissertations of domestic and foreign scientists in the field of career guidance, a comparative analysis of the data of sociological surveys was carried out, methods of analysis, synthesis and modeling of the socio-pedagogical space were used.Results. It is established that the ineffective organization of career guidance leads to errors in choosing a profession, which is an unfavorable factor not only for personal growth, but also harms the country's economy. This dictates the need to develop a new direction of activity in the conditions of pedagogical universities, which, having the necessary personnel and production potential, can become regional career guidance centers, providing methodological guidance and coordination activities, accompanying and supporting career guidance work of schools, implementing comprehensive career guidance diagnostics programs, as well as training programs career counseling specialists (career counseling advisors). These specialists, carrying out qualified systemic activities in various educational institutions, will be able to work in the information, educational, diagnostic, consultative, intermediary and other areas. The authors prove the need for a system-activity approach to career guidance, the elements of which should be interconnected and led.Discussion and Conclusion. The article proposes a new model for organizing career guidance work, proves the need for a system-activity approach, based on the continuity of all levels of education. The main provisions of the article can become the basis of relevant pedagogically sound career guidance projects that take into account the socio-economic interests of the state and the needs of subjects of career guidance choices.

<p>The study aimed to investigate the factors determining the students’ career choice and find out their job preparedness strategies. Moreover, the study sought to propose a theory which could explain the students’ career choice from a social environmental perspective. Primary data for this study were collected from 120 students selected from fourteen academic departments of the Noakhali Science and Technology University (NSTU) in Bangladesh based on snow-ball sampling. The study revealed that several factors involving students’ family preferences, teachers’ advice, job prestige, job security, remunerations, scope of promotion, scope of pension, scope of professional development, personal interests, academic majors, educational attainments and career development trainings have significant association with the students’ career decision-making. However, gender and social class did not have significant effects on the students’ career choice. The study proposed a career choice theory which indicates that the students’ career choice and career preferences are not determined by their personal interests alone; rather they are determined by the interplay of several social, cultural and economic forces. The study indicated that the majority of the respondents undertake self-study to pursue their preferred jobs. While career development trainings play an important role in developing the competencies of the students for jobs, a majority of the respondents do not have such trainings. As such, the study suggested that the students of the NSTU should undertake career development courses as a strategy for job preparedness. Finally, the study suggested that the NSTU should set up a career guidance and counseling cell to link their students with the current labor market.</p>
