Benefits of a Spatial Data Infrastructure on the Sustainability of a Southwestern European Territory

OTALEX C is a cross border project elaborated by several entities of the administrations, agencies, and Portuguese and Spanish enterprises. The aim is to develop joint cartography, in addition to the union of territorial and environmental data and their interexchange. SDI-OTALEX C has defined a method capable of assigning the degree of sustainability through the integration of environmental, social, and economic indicators. Thus, a link has been established with consumption and productivity, which promotes the appropriate use of resources and, consequently, the sustainable development of the territory. The benefits for local population of this territory fall within the very term of sustainable development since its objective is to define viable projects and reconcile economic aspects, social and environmental impacts of human activities. To reconcile all these aspects, the SDI makes it possible to contribute to sustainability and to try to envision projects that help to keep the population of these largely depopulated territories.

Abstract. This paper discusses the state of the art in Geodesign, as a result from the evolution in the use of geospatial data for shared and co-creative planning. The evolution of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) led to significant advances in geovisualization, the use of cartographic data via the Internet and the construction of SDIs (Spatial Data Infrastructures). These advances fostered the emergence of Geodesign as one of the foundations for territorial planning. The text will also introduce a Brazilian Geodesign platform, GISColab, developed according to the standards set by the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC). The platform introduces layer creation resources via WPS (Web Processing Service), as well as tools for measuring the performance of participatory planning workshops, presently focusing on the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). We introduce case studies in which SDGs were explored in different ways: in post-workshop analyses conducted by coordinators and participants, as well as its application as a supportive tool for decision-making during the workshop, via WPS. Finally, we also discuss the inclusion of SDGs to raise awareness of its key themes and support opinion building, resulting in transformative learning experiences.

Sustainable development has become one of the key principles for succeeding human development goals while at the same time strengthening the power of natural systems in order to provide ecosystem services which the economy and society depends upon. The society’s end result is where the use of resources and the living conditions prolong to meet the human needs without hindering the balance of the natural systems. If ever focusing on Environmental sustainability, it will have a concern with the natural environment and how it remains diverse and productive. For natural resources are derived from the environment, the state of water, air, soil are of particular concern. GRI (Global Reporting Initiative) has an important role to form a framework of sustainable development in businesses, government and other organizations. The goal of the sustainable development process is to achieve the status of ‘sustainability’ in all communities. It is important to make compatible with developed and flexible using the standards laid down by GRI therefore in the long term,strategies’ of sustainable development should assist the continuance of the system of biodiversity of city and suburbs through the active protection and sustainable utilization of natural sources. Therefore in order to achieve sustainability, it is necessary to make structural reforms as regarded in the standards set by GRI and to create some deep and fundamental changes in all levels of communities. Sustainable Business Models (SBM) integrates a triple bottom line approach and includes stakeholder interests, including the environment and society. They are important in implementing business innovation for sustainability and can help fix sustainability into corporate purpose, and serve as a key driver of competitive advantage. Space as the entirety of elements occurring within it and their configuration, is subject to analysis for purposes of optimizing activities connected with it, or generally speaking, optimal spatial management including predicting its future states and preventing spatial conflicts. Geospatial analysis is a complex process, the essential components of which are the collection, modelling and analysis of spatial data. Drawing proper conclusions is largely dependent on the type of spatial model developed. The author carries out the characterization of selected types of network models for purposes of spatial analysis in the sustainable development of space, providing examples of modelling various elements of space on the form of a network. She also touches on the aspect of hierarchy and scale-freeness in these models, as well as the possibility of predicting future states of space, and also using the properties of network models in decision processes to achieve sustainable development.

The article is devoted to the results of forecasting research to identify priority areas of research and technology in the field of marine conservation to achieve the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) No. 14 “Conservation and sustainable use of oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development”. The research was performed in terms of national objectives of this goal in the following stages: 1) survey of experts from scientific organizations and institutions of higher education on research and technology that can offer domestic science, and which are necessary for the implementation of the tasks of SDG No. 14; 2) survey of expert practitioners on the research and technologies proposed at the first stage, which are needed by the real sector; 3) determining the competitiveness of the proposed research/technology based on bibliometric/ patent analysis. The generalized estimation of all offered directions of scientific researches and technologies on these stages and their clustering according to the received estimation is carried out. According to the results of the work of 13 proposals on the national tasks of the SDG No. 14 priority technologies are identified: integrated assessment of the ecological status of natural ecosystems of the sea on the basis of field research and methods of remote sensing of the earth; express water toxicity indicator; ecological management of coastal-marine waters of estuaries and estuaries in the conditions of development of nature protection activity; adapted for Ukraine international methods for determining the number of fish and estimating the total allowable catches in the Black and Azov Seas; new approaches to managing the use of aquatic biological resources of the Black and Azov Seas aimed at sustainable use of resources.

Abstract In recent years sport has become a phenomenon of large dimensions and it is an important resource for the development of a local context (Hautbois, Desbordes, 2008; Maier, Weber, 1993; Weed, Bull, 2004). The combination of physical and sports practices within a natural environment (outdoor) broadens the range of activities that people can choose in their free time (nordic walking, hiking, rediscovering rural districts, walking and cycling in urban spaces, etc.). The demand of this kind of activities is continuously evolving. Sports tourism is a new opportunity for the development of tourism offer. Cities, regions, rural areas, etc. through the exploitation of local resources, vocations and specializations can promote a destination in terms of reputation and tourism flows.This research aims to stimulate a reflection on the role that the synergies between tourism and sport, combined with the use of resources, services and local products (cultural and artistic paths, local artefacts, wine tastings, etc.) may have for the development of a specific territory and its socio-economic environment.

The aim of this article was to express social and economic aspects of the sustainable livestock production in relation to meat consumption in the Czech Republic and to predict the possibilities of further development of livestock production in the conditions of Czech agriculture. With the accession of Czechia to the EU (2004), the structure of Czech agriculture changed to the detriment of livestock production. The decisive sectors of livestock production are pig breeding, cattle breeding and poultry farming. This article (contribution) analyzes trends in the development of production in the basic categories of livestock, and it evaluates the degree of self-sufficiency of the economy in the given sector of agricultural production and the consumption of individual types of meat in Czechia. Using Holt’s model of statistical analysis, it then predicts the future consumption of meat and its individual types in the Czech Republic in the years 2020–2024. As research has shown, the sustainable development of livestock production and meat consumption in the Czech Republic depends not only on the mutual size of meat production and consumption or its quality, but also significantly on the market prices of meat (including world prices), as well as changes in eating habits of the population.

This paper presents three tools developed within the framework of the project EDINSOST2-SDG, aimed at embedding and assessing the Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) in Engineering curricula. ESD is promoted through the introduction into engineering curricula of learning outcomes related to sustainability and, specifically, to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). The first tool, the “Engineering Sustainability Map”, contains ESD-related learning outcomes that any engineering student should have acquired upon completion of their studies. These learning outcomes are described according to four sustainability competencies: (1) Critical contextualization of knowledge, (2) Sustainable use of resources, (3) Participation in community processes, and (4) Application of ethical principles. The second tool, the “Sustainability Presence Map” of a degree, shows the percentage of the presence in the curriculum of each sustainability competency. The calculation of the presence of each competency is based on the effective integration of the related learning outcomes into a specific curriculum. Respective data are provided by teachers responsible for the coordination of the different subjects of the degree, collected by means of a questionnaire. The third tool presented is a questionnaire aimed at measuring the level of ESD that students perceive they have acquired through each competency. The comparison of data resulting from the Sustainability Presence Map with the data from the student questionnaire is the first step that allows the effectiveness of embedding ESD in a degree to be determined, a proper learning assessment will confirm such effectiveness. The three tools presented in this work have undergone a validation process and are currently being used in a set of engineering degrees related to the EDINSOST2-SDG project. The results of the application of these tools are part of the future research work of the authors.

Geographical Information Science (GIScience), also Geographical Information Science and Systems, is a multi-faceted research discipline and comprises a wide variety of topics. Investigation into data management and interoperability of geographical data and environmental data sets for scientific analysis, visualisation and modelling is an important driver of the Information Science aspect of GIScience, that underpins comprehensive Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and Spatial Data Infrastructure (SDI) research and development. In this article we present the 'Grounded Design' method, a fusion of Design Science Research (DSR) and Grounded Theory (GT), and how they can act as guiding principles to link GIScience, Computer Science and Earth Sciences into a converging GI systems development framework. We explain how this bottom-up research framework can yield holistic and integrated perspectives when designing GIS and SDI systems and software. This would allow GIScience academics, GIS and SDI practitioners alike to reliably draw from interdisciplinary knowledge to consistently design and innovate GI systems.
