Alternative Consumption Models for a Sustainable World

In consumer society in which the concept of consuming for the sake of consumption is adapted and individualist ideology comes to the forefront, the fact that the individuals consume irresponsibly and without thinking makes people face many risks and problems in environmental, social, and ethical aspects. By damaging and polluting the ecosystem we live in and changing the structure of society, the consumer society's prescribed and imposed lifestyle drags individuals into unhappiness and prepares the ground for many ecological, ethical, and social risks. As a result, more responsible and greening of consumption is seen as a prerequisite for the growth of a sustainable economy and society. Shaping a sustainable development path is a major challenge that will result in significant changes in future production and consumption processes. In order to adopt a more sustainable life, people should abandon the oppressive consumption habits of the consumer society and adopt alternative consumption models.

Innovators of in vitro meat (IVM) are convinced that this approach is the solution for problems related to current meat production and consumption, especially regarding animal welfare and environmental issues. However, the production conditions have yet to be fully clarified and there is still a lack of ethical discourses and critical debates on IVM. In consequence, discussion about the ethical justifiability and desirability of IVM remains hypothetical and we have to question those promises. This paper addresses the complex ethical aspects associated with IVM and the questions of whether, and under what conditions, the production of IVM represents an ethically justifiable solution for existing problems, especially in view of animal welfare, the environment, and society. There are particular hopes regarding the benefits that IVM could bring to animal welfare and the environment, but there are also strong doubts about their ethical benefits.

Based on the analysis of the norms of strategic documents and other normative legal acts, the author considers environmental entrepreneurship in the light of sustainable socio-economic development of the Russian state, determines the significance of the concept of sustainable development for ensuring environmental safety, as well as environmental development of Russia. Social entrepreneurship, which has a high methodological potential, is designed to help solve a large number of accumulated environmental problems, especially in the field of waste management of production and consumption. The article analyzes individual UN sustainable development goals and national legislation designed to ensure the implementation of social entrepreneurship, which has a high methodological potential. The author concludes that the legislation is becoming more and more environmentally friendly, and these norms also penetrate into acts regulating economic activities, the profit from which should be reinvested in solving socio-environmental problems.

The Chinese government actively uses the new media platform to disseminate government information and provide government services. Contemporary scientific and technological innovation, with computers and information science and technology as engines, has become the core driving force of “leading development”. The objective of this chapter is to evaluate the contribution of structural change to production and consumption patterns with respect to sustainability analysis, with specific reference to sustainable production and consumption issues. In the face of delocalization processes and value chain restructuring, the analysis of sustainable development should instead provide both consumption and production dimensions. In the empirical analysis, the authors consider four measures of emission intensity: consumption-based emissions, consumption-based emissions due to structural change, production-based emissions, and production-based emissions due to structural change. The empirical results suggest a moderate contribution of structural change to decreases in overall emissions.

The problem of increasing anthropogenic pressure on the biosphere is considered in the framework of ideas about the carrying capacity of the ecosystem. The possibility of giving an exact definition of the carrying capacity is discussed, the concept of its one-dimensional projection is introduced, and examples of one-dimensional projections are given. In relation to the biosphere, they relate, in particular, to the limits of growth. The traditional definition of the concept “sustainable development” is criticized, this definition is associated with the ideology of the consumer society. The features of the perception of environmental issues by the mass consciousness in a consumer society are described. Extensions of the notion “environment” and a new approach to the interpretation of the notion “sustainable development” due to this expansion are considered.

This chapter aims to analyze the main factors of the production and consumption of organic products, as well as their policies and strategies. The analysis is based on the premise of the sustainable development of the production, distribution, and consumption systems of organic products that have the potential to improve the quality of life levels of producers, consumers, and society. It is concluded that the production and consumption of organic food is based on a more favorable agriculture of the ecological and the environment, as well as by providing more nutritious and healthy food for consumption.

What exactly do we mean by sustainable consumption and how can it be achieved? In this volume, the authors ask whether sustainability is possible at all in a consumer society and agree that the path currently being pursued is not viable.
