This study conceptualizes and proposes a well-regulated and designated mobile banking and payment system (MBPS) with the potential to strengthen the banking system, foster the regulatory framework, and to be integrated across various platforms and mobile devices. Unlike other mobile payment systems that lack convenience, scalability, and usability, the proposed MBPS contains several important functionalities and it has the potential to bring together hitherto unconnected industries—banking, Fintech and telecoms—to offer value-added services to their existing and potential customers. The ownership of the MBPS shall remain with the financial services sector including the banking and microfinance institutions. The paper concludes with a discussion on the implications and limitations of the study and proposes future research directions.

Considered a lifeline, and a convenience, a mobile phone has now acquired another transformative dimension within the microfinance context.  As a result of the proliferation of mobile banking in emerging markets and developing countries, microfinance institutions (“MFIs”) have adopted similar technological enhancements to deliver microfinance products.  This paper will explore how emerging technology advances has altered the contours of microfinance, specifically mobile banking (also known as “m-banking”) which is utilized to facilitate efficient financial services to a vast number of people without access to the formal banking  system and financial services, otherwise known as the “unbanked”.  This discussion offers a snapshot of the current state of mobile banking, and examines the kaleidoscopic approach used by microfinance institutions through several auxiliary considerations.  Part I examines the underlying rationale in employing a cashless banking paradigm and illustrates how mobile banking is administered institutionally.  Part II seeks to highlight the regulatory considerations intractable within the mobile banking discourse, and is intended to provide a survey of the current regulatory landscape, and finally, Part III focuses on uncovering the consumer perspective, and calls for a conceptual refinement in the interconnection of the social context within mobile banking. This paper is not intended to be categorized as a comparative law piece; rather its primary objective is to provide a snapshot of how certain jurisdictions have embraced mobile banking platforms and their legislative response thereto.  This discussion is merely offered as part of a functionalist approach discourse currently adopted by regulators; as such this paper only offers a cursory perspective of emerging legal considerations within the mobile banking context as it relates to MFIs.

Converting biomass into high value-added compounds has attracted great attention for solving fossil fuel consumption and global warming. 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) has been considered as a versatile biomass-derived building block that can be used to synthesize a variety of sustainable fuels and chemicals. Among these derivatives, 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) is a desirable alternative to petroleum-derived terephthalic acid for the synthesis of biodegradable polyesters. Herein, to fully understand the current development of the catalytic conversion of biomass to FDCA, a comprehensive review of the catalytic conversion of cellulose biomass to HMF and the oxidation of HMF to FDCA is presented. Moreover, future research directions and general trends of using biomass for FDCA production are also proposed.

PurposeThe purpose of this article is to systematically review extant research on the corporate governance (CG) of microfinance institutions (MFIs) from a global perspective. In the process, it discusses scholarly contributions and highlights key issues from the findings of past studies on several governance attributes, in particular, their interconnections and influence on different institutional outcomes of the sector.Design/methodology/approachAlthough academic work on microfinance governance is substantial, prior studies lack a comprehensive approach to reviewing the literature on this topic. We adopted a systematic method to review past studies on microfinance CG by applying particular inclusion and exclusion criteria. In this regard, the study developed specific questions and sought to find their answers from the existing literature.FindingsThe findings from our research indicate that microfinance governance-performance relationship is the central focus of the majority of our reviewed papers, although a few attempts have been made to explain the interconnection between CG mechanisms at the firm and institutional level. Our findings also show that existing studies have used a variety of techniques to measure MFI performance vis-à-vis their hybrid mission, such as profitability and outreach. Moreover, the study found that common topics discussed in the mainstream literature include board structure, CEO characteristics, audit quality, external governance, disclosure and MFI ownership type.Research limitations/implicationsThis review has some limitations that warrant further research. First, we considered only peer-reviewed scientific publications for our systematic review. Second, we omitted non-English journal papers from our sample. In light of these limitations, we provide some future research directions that may shed further light on our current inquiry.Originality/valueThis paper evaluates past relevant studies using a systematic approach (in preference to the commonly used narrative approach) for a span of over eighteen years; thereby contributing significantly to the sectoral governance literature. This study is novel in that it offers new incentives and opportunities for further research in order to meet the shortcomings of reviewed papers from various theoretical, empirical, methodological and geographical standpoints.

Selective laser melting (SLM) is a powder bed fusion type metal additive manufacturing process which is being applied to manufacture highly customised and value-added parts in biomedical, defence, aerospace, and automotive industries. Aluminium alloy is one of the widely used metals in manufacturing parts in SLM in these sectors due to its light weight, high strength, and corrosion resistance properties. Parts used in such applications can be subjected to severe dynamic loadings and high temperature conditions in service. It is important to understand the mechanical response of such products produced by SLM under different loading and operating conditions. This paper presents a comprehensive review of the latest research carried out in understanding the mechanical properties of aluminium alloys processed by SLM under static, dynamic, different build orientations, and heat treatment conditions with the aim of identifying research gaps and future research directions.

The world is changing due to technological innovations that are reflected in both the customers’ needs and the payment systems themselves. Payment systems that operate on the territory of Ukraine have certain properties, which the potential client draws attention to when choosing one of them. Let's conduct complex research and we will propose solutions of a relevant scientific task which consists of the development of theoretical and methodological foundations, methodological approaches and practical recommendations on the implementation and improvement of the functioning of payment systems in Ukraine in the light of world experience. Modern payment systems are one of most the important and fundamental parts of Ukraine`s financial infrastructure. The article offers a theoretical understanding of the payment system and considers the peculiarities of the payment systems functioning in Ukraine at the present stage. The payment systems market and its structure are presented in details. Payments and transfers number are highlighted. The statistics on illegal payment card transactions are reviewed. The payment systems of the leading European countries are characterized. The prospects of the National Bank of Ukraine with the largest European payment systems are described. On a basis expansion of the structure of criteria of the importance of payment service providers and accounting of the presence of crucial participants in payment service providers is developed a methodical approach to the assessment of the priority of payment service providers. The practical value of the received results consists in their use for the development of normative legal acts of the National Bank of Ukraine, the safety of payment service provider of Ukraine regulating an order. Measures to increase payment system`s security level in Ukraine are outlined. For the banking system of Ukraine, European experience in the field of payment systems is very important, as today the concept of borders is quite conventional when it comes to payment services. In this regard, determining the priority of payment systems that operate in Ukraine is of particular importance, which determines the relevance of the chosen topic.

Financial inclusion ensures financial products and services at reasonable rates for individuals and aims to introduce unbanked people into banking and financial services. The study aims to explore the effect that mobile banking facilities have on financial inclusion in 17 developing countries. From 2011 to 2017, this study took data from the three dimensions of financial inclusion called "Penetration," "Access," and "Uses". This paper took the Sarma model of Index of Financial Inclusion (IFI) to measure financial inclusion. This paper incorporates mobile money accounts as a "penetration" variable and Mobile banking outlet as an "Access" variable with existing model variables to quantify the effect of mobile banking. This research finds that mobile banking positively impacts the selected countries, though the degree of the changes is not symmetric. African regional countries have improved their financial inclusion after introducing mobile banking much better compared to other regions. This study is limited to examining mobile banking effects on selected emerging countries only. Future research may be devoted to developing more innovative strategies and tools to reach out to unbanked people, including people who face disparities in mobile phone ownership and bandwidth allocation.

This article is dedicated to study of peculiarities of legal regulation of the work of operators of foreign payment systems and foreign providers of payment services within the framework of national payment system of the Russian Federation. The object of this research is the public relations that emerge in the process of rendering payment services by foreign providers, their provision of electronic payment means for financial transfers on the territory of the Russian Federation, functionality of the operators of foreign payment systems, and supervision by the Bank of Russia. The subject of this research is the legislative norms on national payment system. The scientific novelty consists in the fact that based on the positions of the legislation on national payment system conclusions are made on peculiarities of carrying out supervision over the operators of foreign payment systems and foreign providers of payment services. This supervision is also indirectly carried out through Russian operators of financial transfers. In a case of failure by a foreign organization to meet the requirements established by the legislation on national payment system, the operators of financial transfers loses its right to take part in international payment systems and render financial services associated with transfer of funds using electronic payment methods rendered by foreign providers. The corresponding rules were set to ensure stability of national payment system, increase the quality of payment services, protect the rights and lawful interests of payment service consumers, and finally, ensure financial security of the Russian Federation.
