During initial training, aspiring teachers should learn how to deal with the high cognitive, emotional and behavioral demands generated by teaching. At the same time, they need to develop and strengthen their personal belief that they will be capable of handling said challenges. In the physical education context, these demands can be even more challenging, given the environment and conditions in which classes are taught. This study aimed to analyze teacher self-efficacy belief as to teaching physical education, and its construction from situations experienced during school-based teacher training. A total of 87 future teachers (54% women; average age = 21.8) from a public university in the state of São Paulo completed a sociodemographic questionnaire and the Teachers’ Sense of Efficacy Scale (Tschannen-Moran & Woolfolk Hoy, 2001). To describe sources of teacher self-efficacy, reflective portfolios composed as the final product of a supervised internship were analyzed. The student teachers showed moderate to high self-efficacy belief, which was primarily supported by teaching experiences and verbal persuasions. The relevance of teacher self-efficacy for teacher training, particularly in physical education early training processes, is discussed.

In the teaching domain, self-efficacy (SE) is related to teachers' judgment about their own ability to achieve learning outcomes and student engagement. SE is formed by four sources of information: mastery experiences, vicarious experiences, social persuasion, and psychophysiological states. We measured and analyzed SE and its sources for teaching physical education. Student teachers (n = 114) from three universities responded to two Likert scales - Physical Education Teacher Self-Efficacy Scale and Teacher Self-Efficacy Scale Sources - and a social demographic questionnaire. SE for teaching was classified as moderate, and vicarious experiences and social persuasion were the main sources of information. Results were discussed for future researches related to teaching practices in undergraduate programs as well as in-service teacher training.

Teacher self-efficacy plays an important role in special education; yet, the literature on the measurement of teacher self-efficacy in this field is limited. This study investigated the psychometric properties of the Teachers’ Sense of Efficacy Scale with a sample of Chinese special education teachers ( N = 401, 24.19% male). Confirmatory factor analysis indicated that the Chinese special educational version of the Teacher's Sense of Efficacy Scale (CS-TSES), modified from the Asian model by Ruan, J., Nie, Y., Hong, J., Monobe, G., Zheng, G., Kambara, H., & You, S. (2015). Cross-cultural validation of teachers’ sense of efficacy scale in three Asian countries. Journal of Psychoeducational Assessment, 33(8), 769-779, showed an excellent fit. Additionally, correlations were observed between the results of the CS-TSES and both the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support and the Satisfaction with Life Scale, providing criterion-related validity. In sum, the findings indicated that the TSES is applicable to special education teachers in the Chinese context.

Abstract Lifelong learning emerges as an important dimension in the implementation of sustainable education policies of countries. The conception of developing citizenship competencies, which is at the centre of social studies, plays an important role in shaping the lifelong learning process. The purpose of this study is to analyse the lifelong learning tendencies and teacher self-efficacy levels of social studies teacher candidates in terms of different variables and to determine the relationship between social studies teacher candidates’ lifelong learning tendencies and teacher self-efficacy levels. The study group of the research consists of 307 social studies teacher candidates studying at the education faculty of a public university in the 2016–2017 academic years. The data collection tools used in the research, which was designed in relational survey model, are “Lifelong Learning Tendency Scale” developed by Diker Coşkun (2009), “Teachers’ Sense of Efficacy Scale” adapted into Turkish by Çapa, Çakıroğlu and Sarıkaya (2005) and a Personal Information Form prepared by the researchers. The data of the study are analysed using SPSS 24 statistical software. As a result of the research, it is found that the lifelong learning tendency levels of the social studies teacher candidates are high and their teacher self-efficacy levels are very high. Lifelong learning tendencies and teacher self-efficacy levels of teacher candidates show statistically significant differences in terms of grade level, and taking education for personal and professional development. It is concluded that teacher self-efficacy levels of teacher candidates are a significant predictor of their lifelong learning tendencies.

Objective: To evaluate the impact of three types of social cognitive theory (SCT)-based elementary school classroom physical activity (PA) training on teachers’ implementation rates, attitudes, knowledge and behaviour. Design: Key stakeholder focus groups informed development of phase II which took the form of a randomised controlled trial of three different intensities of teacher training to conduct classroom-based PA sessions. Setting: The study was conducted over one school year (2016–2017), across four elementary schools in the USA. Methods: Researchers delivered professional development to teachers, focusing on effective methods for PA use in the classroom through three formats: webinar, in-person training and in-person with personalised assistance. Training content was built on SCT constructs. This study examined the impact of the PA training on SCT construct outcomes among elementary school classroom teachers ( n = 41). Study outcome measures included reciprocal determinism, behavioural capability, outcome expectations and self-efficacy. Over the 12-week period following the training, teachers completed surveys to measure SCT construct outcomes. Results: Results of the intervention demonstrated an increase in teacher self-efficacy and knowledge ( p < .01 and p < .01). There was a significant increase of teachers who started using PA in the classroom who indicated no use at baseline (from 21% to 6% not using). Conclusion: The use of SCT to provide a teacher training is an effective method to increase classroom PA, while improving teacher self-efficacy and knowledge concerning PA implementation.

Abstract.TEACHER SELF-EFFICACY AND PERSONAL STRENGTHS AND VIRTUES IN TEACHERS FROM DOMINICAN REPUBLIC.The aim of this research it to analyze the relationship between perceived teacher efficacy and personal strengths and virtues. For it, 564 teachers from Dominican Republic took part in the study, 29.6% males and 70.4% females, mean age of 39.72 years (SD = 8.09), and an average teaching experience of 15.67 years (SD = 3.83). Teachers developed their professional activity in 18 provinces of the 32 that integrate Dominican Republic. Three instruments were used for data collection: the Teacher Efficacy Scale (Teacher Efficacy Scale-Short Form), the Teacher Self-Efficacy Scale (Teacher’s Sense of Efficacy Scale-Short Form), and the Personal Strengths Questionnaire VIA (Values in Action Inventory of Strengths: VIA-IS). The psychometric characteristics of the instruments (reliability and validity) were evaluated. The results obtained through the analysis of correlation revealed a positive relationship between the different subscales of the two tests used to evaluate teacher self-efficacy as well as between teacher self-efficacy and the personal strengths and virtues of teachers. The highest correlations were found with the personal strengths of Wisdom and Knowledge, on the one hand, and Humanity, on the other. The need to incorporate in the training, initial and permanent, the work of strengths and personal virtues as the basis of development and personal and professional effectiveness is discussed.Keywords: teacher efficacy, teacher self-efficacy, personal strengths and virtues, Dominican RepublicResumen.El objetivo de esta investigación es analizar la relación entre la percepción de eficacia docente y las fortalezas y virtudes personales en docentes dominicanos. Para ello, participaron 564 docentes de educación infantil y primaria de República Dominicana, 29.6% hombres y 70.4% mujeres, con una edad media de 39.72 años (DT = 8.09) y una media de experiencia profesional de 15.67 años (DT = 3.83). Los docentes desarrollaban su actividad profesional en 18 provincias de las 32 que componen República Dominicana. Se emplearon tres instrumentos de evaluación: la Escala de Eficacia Docente (Teacher Efficacy Scale, Short Form), la Escala de Autoeficacia Docente (Teacher’s Sense of Efficacy Scale-Short Form) y el Cuestionario VIA de Fortalezas Personales (Values in Action Inventory of Strengths: VIA-IS). Se evaluaron las características psicométricas de los instrumentos (fiabilidad y validez). Los resultados obtenidos a través del análisis de correlación pusieron de manifiesto una relación positiva entre las distintas subescalas de las dos pruebas empleadas para evaluar la autoeficacia docente así como entre la autoeficacia docente y las fortalezas y virtudes personales del profesorado. Las correlaciones más altas se encontraron con las fortalezas personales de Sabiduría y conocimiento, por una parte, y Humanidad, por otra. Background:A large proportion of children do not reach the recommended levels of physical activity for health. A quasiexperimental study with nonrandom assignment was performed to evaluate the effectiveness and feasibility of a school-based physical education intervention aimed at increasing the levels of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA).Methods:Ten classes from 4 primary schools, including 241 children aged 8 to 10 years, were recruited. The experimental group (n = 97) received 4 additional sessions/week of 60 minutes of MVPA for 8 months. The control group (n = 135) continued their standard program (2 sessions of 50 minutes/week). Motor abilities (standing long jump, handgrip strength, Harre circuit, sit and reach), physical fitness (Yo-Yo Intermittent Recovery Level-1), anthropometric measures (body mass index, waist to height ratio), and self-efficacy (Perceived Physical Ability Scale for Children) were evaluated at baseline and after the intervention.Results:The experimental group significantly improved in the Harre circuit both in males (P < .001) and females (P < .01), whereas physical fitness test improved only in males (P < .001). Males in the experimental group improved the perception of self-efficacy in coordinative abilities (P = .017).Conclusions:The proposed school-based MVPA program showed effectiveness and feasibility. The differences observed by gender highlight the need to use different strategies to increase the involvement of all the participants.
