Functional Finishing of Cotton and Polyester/Cotton Fabrics with a Fluorine-Containing Water and Oil Repellent

The application of a fluorine-containing water and oil repellent to cotton and polyester/cotton fabrics was investigated. The influence of dosage of the water and oil repellent, curing temperature and time, and pH of application on water and oil repellencies was discussed to determine the optimized finishing process. In addition, some physical properties of finished fabrics were tested. The results showed that the two fabrics finished with the fluorine-containing water and oil repellent at a low dosage exhibited good water and oil repellencies, and the inherent quality of the fabrics had not been adversely affected.

In the anti-wrinkle finishing of cotton fabrics, the decreased dyeability of the finished fabrics has always been a difficult problem. A new anti-wrinkle finishing mode was developed to solve this problem by changing the finishing sequence of fabric dyeing and anti-wrinkle. In this research, the partial oxidization of raffinose with sodium periodate generated multiple aldehydes, which acted as multifunctional cross-linkers and endowed cotton fabrics with anti-wrinkle and hydrophilic properties. The structural characteristics of oxyRa were analyzed by FTIR and 13C-NMR. Through response surface methodology (RSM), the finishing model of oxyRa was established from the influencing factors of catalyst concentration, pH, curing temperature and time, and the optimized finishing process: the catalyst concentration was 20.12 g/L, pH was 4.32, curing temperature was 150 °C and curing time was 120 s. Under this condition, the predicted wrinkle recovery angle (WRA) of the finished fabric was up to 249.76°, Tensile strength (TS) was 75.62%, Whiteness index (WI) was 70.69. Importantly, comparing the anti-wrinkle and dyeing performance of the fabric with anti-wrinkle and then dyeing and anti-wrinkle after dyeing, the oxyRa-treated fabrics showed better dyeing properties compared with previously reported dimethyldihydroxyethylene urea (DMDHEU), glutaraldehyde (GA), and 1,2,3,4-butanetetracarboxylic acid (BTCA). Analysis of the combined mechanism of different finishing agents and cellulose, demonstrated the reason why oxyRa can be used to change the order of dyeing and anti-wrinkle finishing.

The cotton fabrics was treated with the blending of organic fluorine water and oil repellent finishing agent and cross-linking agent. The contact angle to water was over 120°and that to oil was above 110°after the fabrics were washed 20 times, indicating that the water and oil repellent properties and durability of fabrics were excellent. And the technology was optimized as follows: the water and oil repellent finishing agent 50g/L, cross-linking agent 4g/L, curing temperature 150°C and curing time 200s.

The structure, composition and water content of a oil palm wood influence its dynamic mechanical properties. These are very important to study in relation to wood applications. The quality of oil palm wood can be improved through formalization treatment in acid and alkaline conditions and then impregnated by melamine formaldehyde. Variation of formalization time and curing temperature after impregnation on specimens were investigated. Based on physical properties and FTIR characterizations, the formalization time of both acidic and alkaline conditions with the melamine formaldehyde impregnation treatment, showed improving in physical properties of the samples after treatment and this is also indicated with a shift in wave numbers and emergenced a new functional group on FTIR spectra of the samples. The curing temperature has also led to increase density and decrease water content of the specimen, so therefore revealing a decrease of the hygroscopicity of wood.

Soybean (Glycine max (L) Merr) is needed as an alternative diversification in order to increase protein consumption. Soybean can be processed into variety of foods and drinks. The most popular drink from soybean is soya milk which is made from soybean extract yielded from the addition of water. The amount of water added determine the quality of soya milk due to its effect on the chemical and physical properties of soya milk. This research was intended to find out the proper ratio of soybean and water in the processing of soya milk to yield the best quality. A completely randomized design was used with eight treatments of soybean and water ratio as follows, ratio of 1 : 6, ratio of 1 : 8, ratio of 1 : 10, ratio of 1 : 12, ratio of 1 : 14, ratio of 1 : 16, ratio of 1 : 18 and ratio of 1 : 20. Result showed the soybean and water ratio 1 : 10 in the processing of soya milk yielded milk having good quality according to its chemical with protein content of 2.53%, fat of 1.20%, sugar total of 1.60%, pH of 7.1, and organoleptic characteristies of both somewhat sweet taste and viscous texture.

Aggressive behavior in dementia often has a severe impact on the quality of life of the patient and the caregivers, and is therefore important to handle. The strategy of treatment should be broad. Nonpharmacological interventions, including environmental adjustments and supporting and training the caregivers, should always be considered. Pharmacological treatment of aggressive behavior in patients with dementia often includes the use of neuroleptics. The atypical compounds clozapine, risperidone, and olanzapine have been shown to have an effect on aggressive behavior at low dosage with limited extrapyramidal side effects. The anticonvulsants carbamazepine and sodium valproate are further alternatives. In treatment-resistant cases, buspirone or lithium may be tried, although the effect of these substances on aggressive behavior in dementia has not been well established. In the end, however, a considerable degree of aggressive behavior sometimes remains after careful treatment trials, particularly in patients with severe aggressive behavior. In addition, treatment is sometimes limited by side effects.

This article explores the ecology of late-modern askesis through the concept of ‘ethical infrastructure’: the array of goods, locales, technologies, procedures, and sundry pieces of equipment upon which the possibility of ethicists’ striving is premised. By looking at the ethnographic case of halal living among Muslim pietists in post-Soviet Tatarstan (Russia), I advance a framework that highlights the ‘profane’, often unassuming or religiously unmarked, yet essential material scaffolding constituting the ‘material conditions of possibility’ for pious life in the lifeworld of late modernity. Halalness is conceptualised not as an inherent quality of a clearly defined set of things, but as a (sometimes complicated) relationship between humans, ethical intentionality, and infrastructurally organised habitats. Pointing beyond the case of halal, this article syncretises theories of self-cultivation, material religion, ethical consumption, and infrastructure to address current lacunas and explore fresh theoretical and methodological ground. This ‘ethical infrastructure’ framework enables us to conceptualise the embeddedness of contemporary ethicists in complex environments and the process by which processes of inner self-fashioning change and are changed by material worlds.

A large number of works are devoted to the development of the skin and hair cover of sheep, depending on their breed affiliation, age, feeding conditions and housing. The authors point out that along with other conditions the quality of wool and wool clip is greatly influenced by the conditions of the feeding of animals. A high level of feeding increases the wool clip and improves the quality of the wool and vice versa a low level reduces, causes thinning and worsens other physical properties of the wool. As is known, one of the significant factors that determine the increase in wool clip is the size of the animal and, consequently, the total area of the skin. The purpose of the research was to investigate the morphological traits of the development of the skin and wool cover in sheep of Prikatunsky meat and wool type. The research material was wool samples from four topographic areas of the animal’s body (side/thigh/back/belly) and skin (side) of different sex and age groups, selected from the animals of the studied groups. In the course of research, the quality of wool and indicators of the histostructure of the skin of Prikatunsky meat and wool type of sheep have been investigated. In terms of thick-haired of wool, replacement rams and gimbers of Prikatunsky meat and wool type of sheep were superior by 4,82 pcs. per mm² or 19,0 % and 4,41 pcs. per mm² or 15,8 % of adult animals, respectively. Balance secondary follicles/primary follicles in young animals were higher by 10,3 and 17,3 % compared to breeding rams and ewes. The wool of the replacement young animals was thinner by 7,28 and 4,78 microns and they were more thick-haired. The obtained data will be used in the mating campaign when mating program rams in order to improve the sheep of Prikatunsky meat and wool type.

R&D outsourcing becomes the often-adopted strategy for firms to innovate. However, R&D cooperation often ends up with failure because of its inherent quality of instability. One of the main reasons for cooperation failure is the opportunistic behavior. As the R&D contract between firms is inherently incomplete, opportunistic behavior always cannot be avoided in the collaborative process. R&D cooperation has been divided into horizontal and vertical types. This paper utilizes game theory to study opportunistic behavior in the vertical R&D cooperation and analyzes the equilibrium of the cooperation. Based on the equilibrium and numerical results, it is found that the vertical R&D cooperation is inherently unstable, and the downstream firm is more likely to break the agreement. The level of knowledge spillovers and the cost of R&D efforts have different effects on firms’ payoffs. When the level of knowledge spillover is low or the cost of R&D efforts is high, mechanisms such as punishment for opportunism may be more effective to guarantee the stability of cooperation.

This issue of the MRS BULLETIN is devoted to high Tc superconductivity. It is the sequel to a previous series of articles on the same subject which appeared in the MRS BULLETIN in January 1989. While the articles in the January 1989 issue emphasized the families of high Tc superconducting oxides known at that rime, as well as novel processing techniques and thin films, the papers in this issue focus on the physical properties of high Tc oxide superconductors.The quality of polycrystalline and single-crystal bulk and thin-film materials has improved to the point where researchers can now make reliable measurements of many physical properties representative of the intrinsic behavior of these materials. As a result, a broad spectrum of important issues such as the nature of the electronic structure, the type of superconducting electron pairing, the magnitude and temperature dependence of the superconducting energy gap, the behavior of fluxoids in the vortex state, etc., can be addressed meaningfully. Presently emerging is a consistent picture of the physical properties of the high Tc oxides, which will form the foundation to eventually developing an appropriate theory for the normal and superconducting states of these remarkable materials.
