The paper presents a sample of wider set of new findings and recommendations from the area of the influence of technological parameters on the quality of surface of steel HARDOX 500 cut by AWJ technology and obtained by the evaluation of a large set of experiments within long-term activities of the Department of Manufacturing Processes Operation, Faculty of Manufacturing Technologies, Technical University in Košice, aimed at the diagnostics of operational states of manufacturing systems with AWJ technology.

The article presents the results of Technical University in Košice Faculty of Manufacturing Technologies Department of production processes operation and Technical University in Ostrava Physics Institute Liquid jet workplace cooperation in the area of operational states diagnosis of manufacturing systems with abrasive water jet technology (AWJ). Within the operational states diagnostics is the impact of selected technological parameters on technological head vibrations studied. Based on an extensive set of experiments are original graphical dependences determined of the abrasive mass flow and feed speed impact on the vibrations parameter - technological head vibrations acceleration amplitude of manufacturing system with AWJ technology. In addition to the original graphical dependences are in article new knowledge formulated in the area of science and research and recommendations for companies that operates manufacturing systems with AWJ technology.

In the fields of military and civil uses, some special passages exist in many major parts, such as non-linear tubes. The overall performance is usually decided by the surface quality. Abrasive flow machining (AFM) technology can effectively improve the surface quality of the parts. In order to discuss the mechanism and technology of abrasive flow machining nonlinear tube, the nozzle is picked up as the researching object, and the self-designed polishing liquid is employed to make research on the key technological parameters of abrasive flow machining linear tube. Technological parameters’ impact on surface quality of the parts through the nozzle surface topography and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) map is explored. It is experimentally confirmed that abrasive flow machining can significantly improve surface quality of nonlinear runner, and experimental results can provide technical reference to optimizing study of abrasive flow machining theory.

Abstract In multistage manufacturing systems, quality of final products is strongly affected not only by product design characteristics but also by key process design characteristics. However, historically, tolerance research has primarily focused on allocating tolerances based on product design characteristics for each component. Currently, there is no analytical approach for multistage manufacturing processes to optimally allocate tolerances to integrate product and process characteristics at minimum cost. One of the major obstacles is that the relationship between tolerances of process and product characteristics is not well understood and modeled. Under this motivation, this paper aims at presenting a framework addressing the process-oriented (rather than product-oriented) tolerancing technique for multistage manufacturing processes. Based on a developed state space model, tolerances of process design characteristics at each fabrication stage are related to the quality of final product. All key elements in the framework are described and then derived for a multistage assembly process. An industrial case study is used to illustrate the proposed approach.

As the quality of manufactured products as well as the quality of the used manufacturing processes has become more and more important for a company in order to stay competitive in the last decades, an integrated quality management leading towards intelligent manufacturing represents a key factor today. Therefore, new methods are required for considering quality information in all phases of the product life cycle. Feature technology and especially the use of so-called measurement and quality features represent an approach towards integrated quality management and the achievement of process-oriented and global quality control loops. Furthermore, feature technology in general also represents a high potential just within the area of sheet metal forming where it can be used to provide additional information for designing manufacturing processes and constructing tools and devices in manufacturing systems.

Increasing the demand for cold rolled ultra thin strip as feedstock for miniaturized products has encouraged researchers to investigate the ways to increase the quality of such products, especially those related to strip surface roughness. Surface is known as quality factor in most of manufacturing processes. In this paper, the effect of the rolling parameters on the surface roughness transformation during metal rolling has been studied. The experimental results demonstrate that the surface roughness transformation during the metal rolling is highly affected by the designation of the processing parameters such as finishing temperature, reduction, rolling passes and lubrication. The results have been discussed to verify the validity of the new findings.

This paper introduces an invariant Hough random ferns (IHRF) incorporating rotation and scale invariance into the local feature description, random ferns classifier training, and Hough voting stages. It is especially suited for object detection under changes in object appearance and scale, partial occlusions, and pose variations. The efficacy of this approach is validated through experiments on a large set of challenging benchmark datasets, and the results demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms state-of-the-art conventional methods such as bounding-box-based and part-based methods. Additionally, we also propose an efficient clustering scheme based on the local patches’ appearance and their geometric relations that can provide pixel-accurate, top-down segmentations from IHRF back-projections. This refined segmentation can be used to improve the quality of online object tracking because it avoids the drifting problem. Thus, an online tracking framework based on IHRF, which is trained and updated in each frame to distinguish and segment the object from the background, is established. Finally, the experimental results on both object segmentation and long-term object tracking show that this method yields accurate and robust tracking performance in a variety of complex scenarios, especially in cases of severe occlusions and nonrigid deformations.

Gas migration through fresh and hardened cement slurry is an ongoing problem in the oil industry. In order to eliminate this unfavourable phenomenon, research is being conducted on new compositions of slurries for gas wells. The article presents the results of research for slurries with low and high resistance to gas migration. The proper selection of the quantity and quality of components makes it possible to design slurry with the required static structural strength values. In addition, the cement sheath of such anti-migration slurry has low porosity and a very low proportion of large pore spaces. Additionally, the mechanical parameters do not decrease during long-term deposition in borehole-like conditions. By obtaining these results, it was possible to design slurry whose cement sheath has high corrosion resistance. The new slurry has a lower water-cement ratio. Additionally, GS anti-migration copolymer, anti-filter additive and latex are used. The presence of n-SiO2 aqueous solution and microcement allows for sealing the microstructure of the hardened cement slurry. Such modifications significantly improve the technological parameters of the cement slurry and the cement coat formed from it.

Abstract We consider the design issues of characterizing and appropriately choosing the quality of a product for maximum customer satisfaction and maximum corporate profit. We assume that the basic design configuration of a product is determined and that the designer must select the product quality by imposing statistical tolerances (manufacturing accuracy specifications) and choosing appropriate manufacturing processes. We claim that these design considerations, although often neglected, impact the behavior, cost, and even marketability of the product. A design concept without these specifications is incomplete because i) its feasibility is questionable ii) its cost of production is undetermined iii) its performance is unknown. The design process is seen here as an exploratory activity constrained by the manufacturing systems available. In particular, we provide a decision-analytic methodology to reason about the quality of product and the influences on profit resulting in a specification of manufacturing process and machine accuracy to match customer requests. The method is illustrated by the study of a simple three component assembly.

Purpose This study aims to determine if the quality of national institutions and banking development condition the maturity of debt depending on the horizon of short or long term. Design/methodology/approach Analysis is performed on a sample of 116 nonfinancial companies from Peru and Brazil. The measures of quality of national institutions and banking development were obtained from World Bank data and included factorial analysis for dynamic considerations. Findings The findings, through the treatment of pointed indicators, the factor analysis and the subsequent estimation of a dynamic econometric model, called GMM-SYS, show that institutional quality fosters the maturity of long-term debt and banking development boots short-term financial relations. Research limitations/implications Evaluating different measures of the quality of national institutions and banking development is necessary to demonstrate the robustness of the results beyond the sample evaluated in Latin America. Practical implications The research allows to understand the interaction between national institutions and system banking through debt maturity, and this is useful for establishing common target between both groups. Social implications It is important for corporate finance to understand the mechanisms of the interaction between national institutions and system banking, because this affects internal decisions of firms regarding financial implications. Originality/value The treatment of measures of national institutions and banking development include dynamic considerations, and the application of this study in Latin America provides new findings regarding these kind of indexes and their interaction with firms´ features such as debt maturity.
