A three dimensional model of Multichip Module (MCM) is built with ANSYS. The temperature and thermal stress field distribution are studied. Taking into account the global heat dissipation and the local thermal stress, the effect of structure parameters and material properties on the maximum chip junction temperature and the maximum thermal stress of MCM are studied. The four design parameters are the thickness of the substrate, thermal conductivity of the substrate, thermal conductivity of the thermal grease and convection heat transfer coefficient. This paper gave the method to reduce the temperature, and the results provided an efficient basis for the compromising design of thermal stress, which is benefit for the thermal optimization of MCM.

Pebble dynamics is important for the safe operation of pebble-bed high temperature gas-cooled reactors and is a complicated problem of great concern. To investigate it more authentically, a computed tomography pebble flow detecting (CT-PFD) system has been constructed, in which a three-dimensional model is simulated according to the ratio of 1 : 5 with the core of HTR-PM. A multislice helical CT is utilized to acquire the reconstructed cross-sectional images of simulated pebbles, among which special tracer pebbles are designed to indicate pebble flow. Tracer pebbles can be recognized from many other background pebbles because of their heavy kernels that can be resolved in CT images. The detecting principle and design parameters of the system were demonstrated by a verification experiment on an existing CT system in this paper. Algorithms to automatically locate the three-dimensional coordinates of tracer pebbles and to rebuild the trajectory of each tracer pebble were presented and verified. The proposed pebble-detecting and tracking technique described in this paper will be implemented in the near future.

This paper presents the thermal analyses carried out to predict the temperature distribution of the silicon chip with non‐uniform power dissipation patterns and to determine the optimal locations of power generating sources in silicon chip design layout that leads to the desired junction temperature, Tj. Key thermal parameters investigated are the heat source placement distance, level of heat dissipation, and magnitude of convection heat transfer coefficient. Finite element method (FEM) is used to investigate the effect of the key parameters. From the FEM results, a multiple linear regression model employing the least‐square method is developed that relates all three parameters into a single correlation which would predict the maximum junction temperature, Tj,max.

Abstract The issue of electronic heat dissipation has received much attention in recent times and has become one of the key factors in electronic components such as circuit boards. Therefore, designing of materials with good thermal conductivity is vital. In this work, a thermally conductive SBP/PU composite was prepared wherein the spherical h-BN@PMMA (SBP) composite powders were dispersed in the polyurethane (PU) matrix. The thermal conductivity of SBP was found to be significantly higher than that of the pure h-BN/PU composite at the same h-BN filler loading. The SBP/PU composite can reach a high thermal conductivity of 7.3 Wm−1 K−1 which is twice as high as that of pure h-BN/PU composite without surface treatment in the same condition. This enhancement in the property can be attributed to the uniform dispersion of SBP in the PU polymer matrix that leads to a three-dimensional continuous heat conduction thereby improving the heat diffusion of the entire composite. Hence, we provide a valuable method for preparing a 3-dimensional heat flow path in polyurethane composite, leading to a high thermal conductivity with a small amount of filler.

With the increased frequency of accidental and deliberate explosions, evaluating the response of civil infrastructure systems to blast loading has been attracting the interests of the research and regulatory communities. However, with the high cost and complex safety and logistical issues associated with field explosives testing, North American blast-resistant construction standards (e.g. ASCE 59-11 and CSA S850-12) recommend the use of shock tubes to simulate blast loads and evaluate relevant structural response. This study first aims at developing a simplified two-dimensional axisymmetric shock tube model, implemented in ANSYS Fluent, a computational fluid dynamics software, and then validating the model using the classical Sod’s shock tube problem solution, as well as available shock tube experimental test results. Subsequently, the developed model is compared to a more complex three-dimensional model and the results show that there is negligible difference between the two models for axisymmetric shock tube performance simulation; however, the three-dimensional model is necessary to simulate non-axisymmetric shock tubes. Following the model validation, extensive analyses are performed to evaluate the influences of shock tube design parameters (e.g. the driver section pressure and length and the expansion section length) on blast wave characteristics to facilitate a shock tube design that would generate shock waves similar to those experienced by civil infrastructure components under blast loads. The results show that the peak reflected pressure increases as the driver pressure increases, while a decrease in the expansion length increases the peak reflected pressure. In addition, the positive phase duration increases as both the driver length and expansion length are increased. Finally, the developed two-dimensional axisymmetric model is used to optimize the dimensions of a physical large-scale conical shock tube system constructed for civil infrastructure component blast response evaluation applications. The capabilities of such shock tube system are further investigated by correlating its design parameters to a range of explosion threats identified by different hemispherical TNT charge weight and distance scenarios.

A finite element approach based on Ansys is developed to simulate stress intensity distribution in a three dimensional model of coupling clamp joint, which includes ferrules, pipe caps and bolts. The characteristics of stress intensity distributions of coupling clamp joint under strength pressure loading have been studied by means of the non-linear finite element method. The FE model can also predict the clamp quality and tolerances to be expected under different process conditions and define the most effective process parameters to influence the tolerances. The study could give us a better understanding on the mechanism and basis for optimization design of the coupling clamp joint.

An inverse computational method has been developed for the nonintrusive and nondestructive evaluation of the temperature-dependence of thermal conductivity. The methodology is based on an inverse computational procedure that can be used in conjunction with an experiment. Given steady-state heat flux measurements or convection heat transfer coefficients on the surface of the specimen, in addition to a finite number of steady-state surface temperature measurements, the algorithm can predict the variation of thermal conductivity over the entire range of measured temperatures. Thus, this method requires only one temperature probe and one heat flux probe. The thermal conductivity dependence on temperature (k-T curve) can be completely arbitrary, although a priori knowledge of the general form of the k-T curve substantially improves the accuracy of the algorithm. The influence of errors of measured surface temperatures and heat fluxes on the predicted thermal conductivity has been evaluated. It was found that measurement errors of temperature up to five percent standard deviation were not magnified by this inverse procedure, while the effect of errors in measured heat fluxes were even lower. Understanding the fluid flow and heat transfer characteristics within a vehicle compartment is very important for controlling the effect of major design parameters. Also, adequate visibility through the vehicle windshield over the entire driving period is of paramount practical significance. The numerical solution was done by an operation friendly, fast and accurate CFD code — SC/Tetra with a full scale model of a SM3 car and turbulence was modeled by the standard k-ε equation. Numerical analysis of the three-dimensional model predicts a detailed description of fluid flow and temperature distribution in the passenger compartment and on the inside windshield screen. During the cooling period, the lowest temperature is observed in the lower part of the windshield and in the vicinity of the defroster griller. It was found that the temperature dropped down to a comfortable range almost linearly at the initial stage. The initial period to achieve this comfortable range is dependent on the inlet velocity. Experimental investigations are performed to determine the localized thermal comfort and further validation of the numerical results.

The results of the investigation of the turning kinematics of the steerable wheels of the KrAZ-7634NE off-road vehicle with a wheel formula 8x8 and two front steer axles are given. The theoretical relations between the steer angles of the steerable wheels on the basis of the scheme of double-axle steering turning of the vehicle are shown. The mathematical model of flat four-bar vehicle steering linkage is developed, it determines the relation between the steering linkage left and right steering arms turning angles at any turning radius of the vehicle. KrAZ-7634HE steering three-dimensional model was created and simulation technique of its work was carried out using Creo software. It has been shown that the flat steering linkage model provides sufficient accuracy of calculations in analysis of turning kinematics. The design data can be used for any vehicles that have a similar steering linkage, they allow to analyze the impact of the vehicle design parameters on the turning kinematics and optimize them. Further study of the impact of the kingpin inclinations on the steering linkage kinematic and power characteristics are required.

This paper studies the development of new multifunctional liquid crystal polymeric composites filled with graphene nano platelets (GNPs) for electronic packaging applications. A series of parametric studies were conducted to study the effect of GNP content on the thermal conductivity of LCP-based nanocomposites. Graphene, ranging from 10 wt. % to 50 wt. %, were melt-compounded with LCP using a twin-screw compounder. The extrudates were ground and compression molded into small disc-shaped specimens. The thermal conductivity of LCP matrix was observed to have increased by more than 1000% where as the electrical conductivity increased by 13 orders of magnitude with the presence of 50 wt% GNP fillers. The morphology of the composites was analyzed using SEM micrographs to observe the dispersion of filler within the matrix. These thermally conductive composites represent potential cost-effective materials to injection mold three-dimensional, net-shape microelectronic enclosures with superior heat dissipation performance.

The basic structure of the piston hydraulic cylinder was introduced. A three-dimensional model was carried out for the hydraulic cylinder by using Pro/E soft,the finite element analysis to the largest hydraulic condition while hydraulic cylinder working by using ANSYS soft,and the distribution of the stress and strain of hydraulic cylinder was derived from it. It optimized the structure of hydraulic cylinder effectively and the cost was saved.
