The aim of this work was to create numerical models of the common truss-type assembling joints of L-profiles. Two different models were created – basic (simplified) model of joint and more accurate model which corresponds to the experimental specimens in preparation. Models with different end-plate thicknesses and consequently with different failure modes were solved. The results obtained from numerical models were compared with the analytical solution of such joints using the Eurocode procedure recommended in EN 1993-1-8. These results are planned to be verified and further developed based on planned experiments.

AbstractIn this study, numerical models were developed to predict the behavior of steel extended end-plate moment connections subjected to static and blast-like loading. Two types of extended end-plate connections were considered, stiffened, and unstiffened, with pretensioned bolts. The models were verified by comparing the results with published experimental data. The models were used to compute the moment-rotation curves for the connection under static loading, and then under different blast durations. The pressure impulse diagram and the energy dissipation for the connection under dynamic loading were determined. The failure modes were examined, and the numerical results were compared with the simplified models presented in codes and standards. Improvement in the performance of the connection by adding one or two stiffeners was demonstrated. For the configuration studied, introducing a stiffener increased plastic dissipation energy for blast loading by 45% compared to the unstiffened connection, whereas under static loading, the plastic energy dissipation for stiffened connection, SC2, was higher than the unstiffened connection by 30%. A conservative estimate for the dynamic increase factor (DIF) was found to be 1.2 for steel yield stress and 1.05 for bolt failure.

Abstract Schottky diodes are semiconductor switching devices with low forward voltage drops and very fast switching speeds. This paper provides an overview of the common failure modes in Schottky diodes and corresponding failure mechanisms associated with each failure mode. Results of material level evaluation on diodes and packages as well as manufacturing and assembly processes are analyzed to identify a set of possible failure sites with associated failure modes, mechanisms, and causes. A case study is then presented to illustrate the application of a systematic FMMEA methodology to the analysis of a specific failure in a Schottky diode package.

This paper presents a three-dimensional slope stability limit equilibrium solution for translational planar failure modes. The proposed solution uses Bishop’s average skeleton stress combined with the Mohr–Coulomb failure criterion to describe soil strength evolution under unsaturated conditions while its formulation ensures a natural and smooth transition from the unsaturated to the saturated regime and vice versa. The proposed analytical solution is evaluated by comparing its predictions with the results of the Ruedlingen slope failure experiment. The comparison suggests that, despite its relative simplicity, the analytical solution can capture the experimentally observed behaviour well and highlights the importance of considering lateral resistance together with a realistic interplay between mechanical parameters (cohesion) and hydraulic (pore water pressure) conditions.

In this work, a computational study was carried out to simulate crushing tests on lithium-ion vehicle battery modules. The tests were performed on commercial battery modules subject to wedge cutting at low speeds. Based on loading and boundary conditions in the tests, finite element (FE) models were developed using explicit FEA code LS-DYNA. The model predictions demonstrated a good agreement in terms of structural failure modes and force–displacement responses at both cell and module levels. The model was extended to study additional loading conditions such as indentation by a cylinder and a rectangular block. The effect of other module components such as the cover and cooling plates was analyzed, and the results have the potential for improving battery module safety design. Based on the detailed FE model, to reduce its computational cost, a simplified model was developed by representing the battery module with a homogeneous material law. Then, all three scenarios were simulated, and the results show that this simplified model can reasonably predict the short circuit initiation of the battery module.

Dimensional control can be a major concern in the processing of composite structures. Compared to numerical models based on finite element methods, the analytical method can provide a faster prediction of process-induced residual stresses and deformations with a certain level of accuracy. It can explain the underlying mechanisms. In this paper, an improved analytical solution is proposed to consider thermo-viscoelastic effects on residual stresses and deformations of flat composite laminates during curing. First, an incremental differential equation is derived to describe the viscoelastic behavior of composite materials during curing. Afterward, the analytical solution is developed to solve the differential equation by assuming the solution at the current time, which is a linear combination of the corresponding Laplace equation solutions of all time. Moreover, the analytical solution is extended to investigate cure behavior of multilayer composite laminates during manufacturing. Good agreement between the analytical solution results and the experimental and finite element analysis (FEA) results validates the accuracy and effectiveness of the proposed method. Furthermore, the mechanism generating residual stresses and deformations for unsymmetrical composite laminates is investigated based on the proposed analytical solution.

This paper examines the effects of random and deterministic cycling of wave direction on the updrift beach planform adjacent to a jetty. Results provided using a simplified numerical model cast in dimensionless form indicate the importance of the time series of wave direction in determining design jetty length for a given net sediment transport. Continuous cycling of • wave direction leads to the expected analytical solution. Simplications in the numerical model used restrict the applications to small wave angles, no diffraction, no reflection of waves off structure, no refraction, and no sand bypassing at jetty. The concept can be extended to more sophisticated numerical models.

Introduction. We study the oscillations of a massive load on a planar statically definable symmetric truss of a regular type with parallel belts. Truss weight is not included. Free vertical oscillations are considered. The stiffness of the truss rods is assumed to be the same, the deformations are elastic. Lattice of the truss is double with descending braces and racks. New in the formulation and solution of the problem is the analytical form of the solution, which makes it possible in practice to easily evaluate the frequency characteristics of the structure depending on an arbitrary number of truss panels and the location of the load. Materials and methods. The operators and methods of the system of computer mathematics Maple are used. To determine the forces in the rods, the knotting method is used. The common terms of the sequence of coefficients of solutions for different numbers of panels are obtained from solving linear homogeneous recurrent equations of various order, obtained by special operators of the Maple system. Dependence on two arbitrary natural parameters is revealed in two stages. First, solutions for fixed load positions are found, then these solutions are summarized into one final formula for frequency. Results. By a series of individual solutions to the problem of load oscillation using the double induction method, it was possible to find common members of all sequences. The solution is polynomial in both natural parameters. Graphs constructed for particular cases, showed the adequacy of the approach. The discontinuous non-monotonic nature of the intermittent change depending on the number of truss panels and some other features of the solution are noted. Conclusions. It is shown that the induction method, previously applicable mainly to statics problems with one parameter (number of truss panels), is fully operational to the problems of the oscillations of system with two natural parameters. It should be noted that significant labor costs and a significant increase in the time symbolic transformations in such tasks

Abstract The article deals with numerical analyses of a Continuous Flight Auger (CFA) pile. The analyses include a comparison of calculated and measured load-settlement curves as well as a comparison of the load distribution over a pile's length. The numerical analyses were executed using two types of software, i.e., Ansys and Plaxis, which are based on FEM calculations. Both types of software are different from each other in the way they create numerical models, model the interface between the pile and soil, and use constitutive material models. The analyses have been prepared in the form of a parametric study, where the method of modelling the interface and the material models of the soil are compared and analysed. Our analyses show that both types of software permit the modelling of pile foundations. The Plaxis software uses advanced material models as well as the modelling of the impact of groundwater or overconsolidation. The load-settlement curve calculated using Plaxis is equal to the results of a static load test with a more than 95 % degree of accuracy. In comparison, the load-settlement curve calculated using Ansys allows for the obtaining of only an approximate estimate, but the software allows for the common modelling of large structure systems together with a foundation system.

Bolt-hole clearance affects the failure mode on the bolted connection system of pultruded fiber-reinforced polymer plastic (PFRP) members. The various geometric parameters, such as the shape and cross-sectional area of the structural members, commonly reported in many references were used to validate the bolt-hole clearance. This study investigates the effects of the bolt-hole clearance in single-bolt connections of PFRP structural members. Single-bolt connection tests were planned using different bolt-hole clearances (e.g., tight-fit and clearances of 0.5 mm to 3.0 mm with 0.5 mm intervals) and uniaxial tension is applied on the test specimens. Most of the specimens failed in two sequential failure modes: bearing failure occurred and the shear-out failure followed. Test results on the bolt-hole clearances are compared with results in the previous research.
