CuNiCoBe alloy and CuCoBe alloy were cast by the vacuum inductive melting technique, and were heat treated under certain parameters. By using optical microscope, sclerometer and conductivity meter, the properties of two alloys were investigated after heat treatment. Experimental results show that the process of 980 °C for solid solution and three hours of aging at 450 °C is the best heat treatment for CuCoBe alloy, while 960 °C is the best solid solution treatment temperature for CuNiCoBe alloy with the same aging measures. Ni is beneficial to improve the hardness and conductivity of alloys, and CuNiCoBe alloy has better strength, hardness and conductivity than CuCoBe alloy at different temperatures, and two alloys all have a conductivity mutation increase near 450 °C. CuNiCoBe alloy and CuCoBe alloy soften respectively at 464 °C and 471 °C.

Cast IN738LC alloy mainly consists of primary gamma matrix, gamma prime precipitates, and carbides. SEM-EDS analysis results suggested that most of the carbides are MC type ones that possess high Ti or Ta contents. MC carbides were partly dissolved into the matrix during the solid solution treatment, and the morphology and size of carbides were influenced by the solid solution treatment temperature. Characteristics of gamma prime precipitates were also significantly affected by the solid solution treatment conditions. Single or duplex size distributions of gamma prime precipitates were obtained depending on the solid solution treatment condition. Higher tensile strength was obtained in the case of finer precipitation size and in the case of single size distribution as compared with that of duplex size distribution.

Effect of B addition on the microstructure and mechanical properties of AZ84 Mg alloy was investigated in this study. Through calculation of phase equilibria of AZ84 Mg alloy, carried out by using FactSage® and FTLite database, solution treatment temperature was decided as temperature of 330oC, where supersaturated solid solution can be obtained. Solid solution treatment of AZ84 Mg alloy was successfully conducted at 330oC and supersaturated microstructure with all almost all phases resolved into matrix was obtained. After solution treatment, hot rolling was successfully conducted by reduction of 60%. Compression and tension tests were carried out at room temperature on the samples in as-cast, solution treated, hot-rolled and subsequently recrystallized states. After solid solution treatment, each alloy was soaked at temperatures of 180 and 200oC for time intervals from 1 min to 48 hrs and hardness of each condition was measured by micro-Vickers method. Peak aging conditions were deduced as at the temperature of 200 oC for 10 hrs for ZA84 Mg alloy. By addition of boron, aging kinetics was expedited and strength was enhanced.

The effect of solution treatment temperature on the microstructure, phase present and hardness on Fe-33Ni-19Cr alloy was study in this work. The Fe-33Ni-19Cr alloy was experienced a solution treatment process at six different temperatures which are 950 °C, 1000 °C, 1050 °C, 1100 °C, 1150 °C and 1200 °C for 3 hours soaking time followed by water quench. The average grain size was measured by using linear intercept methods ASTM E112. Microstructure of solution-treated Fe-33Ni-19Cr alloy was characterized by using optical microscope and scanning electron microscope (SEM) equipped with energy dispersive x-ray (EDX) spectrometer. The phase present was analyzed using x-ray diffraction (XRD) technique. The Vickers hardness was used to measure the hardness of solution-treated Fe-33Ni-19Cr alloy. Increasing the solution treatment temperatures were increase the average grain size of solution-treated Fe-33Ni-19Cr alloy. In addition, all samples exhibited an equiaxed matrix grain with slight distribution of precipitates particles. The hardness of solution-treated Fe-33Ni-19Cr alloy was decrease as the solution treatment temperature increase.

The authors experimentally investigated the change of mechanical properties of Inconel X-750 alloy under various heat treatments. For the selected specimens, solid solution treatment under different temperatures was carried out, followed air cooling or furnace cooling. Results show that suitable solid solution treatment and air cooling enhances the strength, plasticity, impact toughness at room temperature of the alloy and lowers the hardness of the alloy at room temperature.

An experimental investigation was carried out to study the effects of solid solution treatment and aging treatment on the microstructures and mechanical properties of an Al-13Si-5Cu-2Ni alloy. The results show that the size of eutectic silicon decreased with solid solution treatment temperature increasing until 510 °C. Subsequently, the eutectic silicon size continued to increase as the temperature increased to 520 °C. Initially, the acicular eutectic silicon of the as-cast alloy was 10.1 μm in size. After the solid solution treatment at 510 °C, the eutectic silicon size was reduced to 6.5 μm. The θ′ phase is the main strengthening phase in the alloy, therefore, the effect of aging treatment on θ′ phases was explored. As the aging time increased, the diameter, length, and fraction volume of the θ′ phases were found to increase. The main reason for the improved performance of this alloy following heat treatment is the passivation spheroidization of the silicon phase and Orowan strengthening due to the θ′ phases. The optimal tensile strength of an Al-13Si-5Cu-2Ni alloy was obtained after solid solution treatment at 510 °C for 8 h followed by an aging treatment at 165 °C for 8 h. Therefore, this work has great significance for promoting the application of Al alloys at high temperatures.

The effects of different solid-solution temperature and holding time on the alloy structure and mechanical properties of alloy 718 were investigated. The results show that the grain size grows up as the solid-solution temperature elevates and the holding time prolongs. The grain size increases slowly because undissolved delta phase restrains the growth of grains when solid-solution temperature is below 1000°C, whereas the grain size increases quickly when solid-solution temperature is beyond 1050°C. At room temperature, the strength and hardness of alloy 718 decrease with solution treatment temperature increasing, however, the ductility and toughness of alloy 718 both increase, and the brittle fracture of sample turns into ductile fracture.

This work examines the effect of solution heat treatment temperature on the tensile strength of Al-Mg-Si aluminum alloy. All samples were machined according to the ASTM B557. The samples were solution treated at 450°C and 530°C and followed by ageing at 160°C for 0, 5, 10, 15 and 20 hours. Tensile test was carried out on the samples after heat treatment. The results showed that the highest tensile strengths (201.69 MPa) was given by the sample solution heat treated at 530 °C for 5 hours followed by 20 hours aging at 160 °C. Whereas, the lowest tensile strength (98.52MPa) was given by the sample solution treated at 450°C for 20 hours. Tensile strength was increased with ageing process and decreased for over-aged samples.

Microstructural changes occurring in biomedical Co-Cr-Mo alloys with three carbon levels due to solution treatment and aging were investigated. Ingots of Co-Cr-Mo alloys with three different carbon levels were prepared by vacuum furnace melting; their chemical composition was Co-28Cr-6Mo-xC (x = 0.12, 0.25 and 0.35 mass%). Precipitates were electrolytically extracted from as-cast and heat-treated alloys. An M23C6 type carbide and a phase were detected as precipitates in as-cast Co-28Cr-6Mo-0.12C alloy, and an M23C6 type carbide and an  phase (M6C-M12C type carbide) were detected in as-cast Co-28Cr-6Mo-0.25C and Co-28Cr-6Mo-0.35C alloys. Only the M23C6 type carbide was detected during solution treatment. Complete precipitate dissolution occurred in all the three alloys after solution treatment. The holding time required for complete precipitate dissolution increased with increasing carbon content and decreasing solution treatment temperature. Complete precipitate dissolution occurred in the Co-Cr-Mo-C alloys solution treated at 1523 K for 43.2 ks; they were then subjected to aging from 873 to 1473 K for a heating time up to 44.1 ks after complete precipitate dissolution in solution treatment at 1523 K for 43.2 ks. The M23C6 type carbide with a grain size of 0.1–3 m was observed after aging. A time-temperature-precipitation diagram of the M23C6 type carbide formed in the Co-28Cr-6Mo-0.25C alloy was plotted.

Purpose This paper aims to investigate the corrosion behaviour of heat-treated and cryorolled Al 5052 alloys in different Cl− ion concentrations. Design/methodology/approach NaCl solutions with concentrations of 0, 0.5, 3.5 and 5.5 per cent were selected. Samples were subjected to pre-heat treatment (annealing at 300 °C and solution treatment at 540 °C) and cryorolling up to 30 per cent reduction before undergoing corrosion tests. The corrosion behaviour of the samples was then investigated by potentiodynamic polarization. The microstructure of the corroded samples was evaluated under an optical microscope, and the percentages of pits on their surfaces were calculated. Findings The cryorolled samples had a lower corrosion rate than the samples that were not cryorolled. The cryorolled sample that underwent solution treatment showed the highest corrosion resistance among all the samples tested. Practical implications The commercial impact of the study is the possibility of using the cryorolled Al alloy in various ion chloride environment. Originality/value The obtained results help in understanding the corrosion behaviour of cryorolled samples under different heat treatment conditions.
