Though there has been a large number of studies concerning the modification of wood plastic composite materials, there is still more to be done. This report aims to study the effect of the coupling agents (PP-g-MAH, silane, titanate) and compatibilizer(SBS) on the mechanical properties of straw flour/waste plastic composites. Straw flour, waste plastic, modifying agents and other additives were mixed evenly in a high speed mixing machine. And the mixed materials were compounded into the pelllets using the twin-screw extruder. Then the test specimens were prepared by the injection molding. The influence of 4% coupling agent (PP-g-MAH, silane, titanate) on the mechanical properties of straw flour/waste plastic composites was researched, and the most suitable coupling agent to the composites was obtained. In order to increase the toughness of the composite materials and to furthermore improve the comprehensive mechanical properties, the WPCs with different contents styrene butadiene styrene (SBS) were investigated. The experimental results showed that the coupling agent PP-g-MAH and the content was 4%, the mechanical properties of the composite materials were better; when SBS content was 5%, the maximum increases of tensile strength, flexural strength and impact strength of SBS modified WPCs were by 14.34%, 20.75%, 34.38% compared to those of neat WPCs respectively.

3D printing has rapidly become popular in both industry and private use. Especially fused deposition modeling has increased its popularity due to its relatively low cost. The purpose of this study is to increase knowledge in the mechanical properties of parts made of wood-plastic composite materials by using 3D printing. The tensile properties and impact strength of two 3D-printed commercial wood-plastic composite materials are studied and compared to those made of pure polylactic acid. Relative to weight –mechanical properties and the effect of the amount of fill on the properties are also determined. The results indicate that parts made of wood-plastic composites have notably lower tensile strength and impact strength that those made of pure polylactic acid. The mechanical properties can be considered sufficient for low-stress applications, such as visualization of prototypes and models or decorative items.

This study examined both the use of acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) as a plastic matrix for wood-plastic composites (WPCs) and the effect of impact modification on the mechanical properties of ABS/wood-flour composites. Blends of ABS filled with wood flour (both pine and maple) were processed into profile shape using a conical twin-screw extruder and the mechanical properties of the resulting composites were characterised and compared to WPCs made with polyolefins (HDPE and PP) and rigid PVC matrices. Generally, WPCs made with ABS matrix outperformed their polyolefin counterparts in both flexural strength and modulus, whereas ABS-based composites had inferior strength but greater modulus than those made with rigid PVC. The impact strength of ABS/wood-flour composites was below that of wood plastic composites made with polyolefins. However, impact modification with acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene terpolymers had some effect in toughening of the ABS/wood-flour composites.

The improvement in impact properties of wood plastic composite from acrylate-styrene-acrylonitrile (ASA) and bagasse was reported in this work. The effect of type and content of impact modifier by using styrene-butadiene-rubber (SBR) and ethylene-acrylic acid (EAA) as impact modifier on morphology and mechanical properties of wood plastic composite were investigated. Wood plastic composites, prepared from ASA and 50 phr of bagasse by varying amount of impact modifier (both SBR and EAA) from 0-40 wt% of ASA were prepared by melt-blending technique. All materials were mixed by using a two-roll-mill, shaped into sheets by a compression molding machine and specimens were cut with a cutting machine. Then, the obtained materials were characterized, including morphology, impact strength and flexural properties. From SEM micrographs showed that wood plastic composites with using SBR as impact modifier showed more compatible with ASA matrix than EAA. This is a consistency results with mechanical properties such as impact properties, which indicated that the impact strength was improved with increasing the amount of SBR from 0-40 wt% of ASA. However, wood plastic composite with EAA showed the reduction of impact strength. So, it could be demonstrated from this study that the most appropriate impact modifier for wood plastic composite from ASA and bagasse was styrene-butadiene-rubber.

The aim of this paper was to assess the influence of the modification of the surface of dolomite and kaolin with SiO2 and TiO2 precursors, on the block copolymer styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS) type thermoplastic rubber properties. These composite materials were obtained by compounding SBS with various ratio of powders. Based on the SEM images it can conclude that the powders were homogenously dispersed in to the SBS matrix. The dolomite particles can be clearly identified in the SEM images as particles of 10 micrometers. The samples obtained with modified dolomite have similar morphology. The EDS elemental distribution confirming a good corroboration between the elements of the dolomite, kaolin and titanium or silicon elements. Based on the thermal analysis according to the residual mass, the presence of 20% mineral phase can be confirmed. According to the DSC curves a strong stabilization of the composite appears, because of the presence of the mineral component. According to the physical-mechanical data all the composite materials exhibit improved mechanical properties. Additionally, the modification of the kaolin and/or dolomite bring important improvements in mechanical properties. The samples 13 and 14 exhibit high tensile and tear strength. These composites can be used for various applications, such as, for instance, soles for firefighters' footwear.

Natural fibers from plants are gaining importance and may substitute wood in the production of wood plastic composites (WPC). To ensure continuity of fiber supply and sustainability of WPC industries, fibers of various types could be mixed together to obtain Mix WPC. However, research need to be carried out to identify the contribution of different fiber type collectively to the mechanical properties of Mix natural fiber polymer composite (NFPC). In this study, preliminary work on the use of natural fibre (NF) such as kenaf, sugar palm and pineapple leaf fibers in the preparation of Mix NFPC were carried out. Four different fiber mix samples with different fiber ratio and size were formulated using polypropylene (PP) as the polymer matrix. Montmorrilonite (MMT) filler was added at constant amount for enhancement of composite mechanical properties. Samples were mixed and prepared using a twin screw extruder and mini injection moulding resepectively. Individual fibers and NFPC prepared were characterized using thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA). Tensile, flexural and impact strength of the composites were determined. Generally, it was found that addition of fiber mix at 50% fiber loading enhance the tensile and flexural strength of the various NFPC with minimal exceptions. The impact strength of the composites were comparable to that of blank PP implying that addition of fiber gives additional advantage besides being eco-friendly. It was also found that higher kenaf loading and different size of fiber mix contribute positively to the various strengths measured. In addition to that, composition of individual fibers also contribute to the mechanical properties of the NFPCs

ABSTRACTDynamic mechanical properties of polypropylene (PP) and grafted polypropylene (PP-g-MA) composites reinforced with acetylated wheat straw fibers (WSF) is reported in this work. The materials were prepared with different fiber particle sizes (40, 80 and 140 U.S. mesh) and at different fiber contents (5, 10 and 15 wt.%). The PP and PP-g-MA composites, where anhydride maleic (MA) was used as coupling agent, were obtained using a twin-screw extruder; whereas an injection-molding machine molded the composite pellets into testing specimens. To observe the morphology of the composites, micrographs were taken with an optical microscope. The Dynamic mechanical properties were analyzed using a torsional rheometer. The morphological analysis showed a high porous structure somehow similar to foamed materials. The storage modulus (G′) increased by increasing the fiber content, and decreased with fiber particle sizes for the PP composites. Meanwhile, the use of the coupling agent additive promoted a modulus increase due to higher fiber-polymer interaction, from better adhesion and chemical bonds formation between the fibers-coupling agent-PP.

Maleic anhydride grafted polypropylene compatibilizer (MAPP) and chitosan (CS) were mixed and used as a compound coupling agent to modify the PP matrix. 5 wt% NaOH and 10 wt% NaOH aqueous solution were used to treat corn stalk fiber (CSF), respectively. The effect of the complex coupling agent and the alkali treatment on the mechanical properties of CSF/PP composite was investigated. Morphological observation of the fracture surfaces was accepted to confirm CSF dispersion and wetting with the help of SEM. The results of the water absorption further demonstrated the binding of the interface between the CSF and the PP matrix. The wetting of the CSF in the PP was improved with the addition of the complex compatibilizer (5% MAPP + 5% CS). The formation of chemical bonding between the fiber and the matrix resulted in enhancing the interfacial compatibility between them. Compared with the pure PP, the flexural strength of 15-UT-5MAPPCS (63.14 MPa) and 15-UT-5MAPPCS (69.35 MPa) increased by 22.5% and 34.5%, respectively. The complex compatibilizer can replace alkaline treatment process to improve the mechanical properties of the composite.

Flame-retardant properties of ammonium polyphosphate (APP) and its two microcapsules, APP with a shell of melamine–formaldehyde (MF) resin (MFAPP) and APP with a shell of epoxy resin (EPAPP), were studied in styrene–butadiene–styrene (SBS). The results indicate that APP after the microencapsulation leads to an increase in limiting oxygen index in SBS compared with APP. When dipentaerythritol is incorporated into the SBS composites containing the APP microcapsules, a further improvement in flame retardancy of the composites is observed. The microencapsulation does not result in much improvement of mechanical properties. Moreover, the effect of a compatibilizer (SBS grafted with maleic anhydride) on flame-retardant and mechanical properties of SBS/APP composites was investigated.

Acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) / polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) with the addition of maleic anhydride grafted polystyrene (KT-5) and polyolefin elastomer (POE) were melt processed in a co-rotating twin-screw extruder. The effect of KT-5 and POE content on the mechanical properties of ABS/PMMA was investigated. Experiment results indicate that KT-5 can improve the tensile strength and the composites are toughened effectively as the addition of POE. According to Orthogonal tests, it demonstrates that POE ha a greater effect on the blends than KT-5, and there exist no obvious interactivity between the two components.

In this study, a new type of composite modified bitumen was developed by blending styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS) and crumb rubber (CR) with a chemical method to satisfy the durability requirements of waterproofing material in the waterproofing layer of high-speed railway subgrade. A pressure-aging-vessel test for 20, 40 and 80 h were conducted to obtain bitumen samples in different long-term aging conditions. Multiple stress creep recovery (MSCR) tests, linear amplitude scanning tests and bending beam rheometer tests were conducted on three kinds of asphalt binders (SBS modified asphalt, CR modified asphalt and SBS/CR composite modified asphalt) after different long-term aging processes, including high temperature permanent deformation performance, resistance to low temperature thermal and fatigue crack. Meanwhile, aging sensitivities were compared by different rheological indices. Results showed that SBS/CR composite modified asphalt possessed the best properties before and after aging. The elastic property of CR in SBS/CR composite modified asphalt improved the ability to resist low temperature thermal and fatigue cracks at a range of low and middle temperatures. Simultaneously, the copolymer network of SBS and CR significantly improved the elastic response of the asphalt SBS/CR modified asphalt at a range of high temperatures. Furthermore, all test results indicated that the SBS/CR modified asphalt possesses the outstanding ability to anti-aging. SBS/CR is an ideal kind of asphalt to satisfy the demand of 60 years of service life in the subgrade of high speed railway.
