The main aim of this research can be represented as a trail to computerize the most soil engineering properties to compute them automatically using many simple Microsoft Excel functions based on raw soil test experimental data. This work will be shortening the time and effort of the geotechnical engineers calculating different soil parameters with acceptable accurate values. Nine different Microsoft Excel formulas, some of the techniques by certain Excel expressions and normal designed algebraic equations were used to present the final spreadsheet. The main computed soil parameters were (ω, LL, PL, PI, ρd,max, ωopt, k) soil classification AASHTO, (qu and cu) for unconfined compression test, (ø and c') for the direct shear test finally (Cc and Cs) for consolidation tests. To get a better understanding on how most of the programmed tools and to Microsoft Excel sheets work, the user should have knowledge about basic concepts of the certain soil parameter test and experimental steps and also the guidelines of the theory that depends to compute the parameter. Also, the user should have enough background about engineering soil properties laboratory experiments computation.

This study was carried out with an intention to observe any sign of improvement of expansive clayey soil due to the addition of Waste Glass Powder (WGP) with it. In this laboratory work clayey (BC) type soil has been chosen. The reason behind choosing clay is that it has many problems. The main problem is that it undergoes consolidation settlement due to the application of long-term loading. Another problem is it shrinks significantly if it is dried and expands significantly, if it absorbs moisture than exerts much pressure on the substructure. Quick Lime and Waste Glass powder is chosen to check the improvement because waste glass powder is cohesionless material and also contains silica, lime etc. Addition of cohesionless material to the cohesive soil means it will lesser the consolidation settlement and expansive nature of soil and Lime provides binding property. To investigate the traditional methods of analysing, the effect of additives on soil has been adopted i.e., conducting several tests of untreated soil and soil treated with waste glass and lime with varying percentage and then comparing the results obtained. The tests that were carried out in this study are Compaction test (Proctor test), Consolidation test (unconfined compression test). MDD and Unconfined compressive strength increases with the addition of glass powder and lime with oven dried expansive soil.

The necessity of improving the engineering properties of soil has been recognized; therefore, it is very important to find ways to enhance the weak soil, and using plastic waste is one promising way of doing it. The primary objective of this study is to compare the bearing capacity of the two types of soil (Clay and Item-201) in different concentrations of plastics, namely, at 0%, 0.5%, and 1%. Primarily, this investigation aimed to compare the California bearing ratio (CBR) of the two types of soil each with three concentrations of plastic. This study made use of the experimental design, specifically posttest design only to determine the effectiveness of using recycled waste plastic as soil bearing capacity enhancer. Findings revealed that in terms of the type of soil, there is a significant difference in California bearing ratio between clay and Item 201 (p-value < 0.05). On the other hand, the California bearing ratio of the soil samples in various concentrations are not the same. As with the interaction between the type of soil and the waste plastic, a two-way ANOVA reveals that there is significant interaction between them that might have influenced California bearing ratio in the soil (p-value < 0.05).

Keywords: Engineering, soil, waste plastic, soil bearing capacity enhancer, California bearing ratio, experimental, ANOVA, Davao City, Philippines.

<p>The demand for metals and raw materials continues to increase as onshore deposits become more depleted. Our oceans contain large unexplored areas that may contain new resources in the form of Mn-nodules, Co-rich crusts, and massive sulfides. A complete characterization and assessment of these deposits are fundamental for the evaluation of resource extraction, separation, and disposal processes.</p><p>The Red Sea holds unique examples of sediment accumulations formed under distinctive environmental conditions. The Atlantis II deep is located in the central part of the Red Sea at 2 km depth and on top of the spreading axis. This deep accumulates sediments that result predominantly from the discharge of hydrothermal fluids into hot and stratified brine pools. The changes in environmental conditions and the hydro-chemical conditions in the brine pool control sediment formation. The accumulations are enriched with metals, such as Ag, Au, Cu, Co, and Zn. The sediments in this deep hold a record of the formation history and their brine pools tell a story about on-going processes.</p><p>On-going research at the Energy Geo-Engineering Laboratory EGEL, KAUST includes (1) Geotechnical index properties (liquid limit, grain size distribution, and specific surface) and consolidation tests to infer engineering properties, (2) Sediment classification based on the Revised Soil Classification System, (3) Geochemistry and mineralogy using XRD, ICP-OES and (4) Microstructure and texture with SEM imaging. An advanced sediment characterization of these fine-grained metalliferous deposits gives a comprehensive understanding of the soil behavior.</p>

The average shear wave velocity over the top 30 m of a soil profile ( VS,30) represents an usual parameter for soil classification in a modern building code for seismic design. In this work the ground response of about 100 soil profiles in Tuscany and Molise (Italy) is studied through 1-D numerical simulations in order to evaluate the reliability of European and Italian soil classifications based on the VS,30 criterion. The amplification factor, Fa, defined here as the ratio of the pseudo-velocity response spectrum intensity (Housner 1952) at the surface, S Is, to the pseudo-velocity response spectrum intensity at the rock outcrop, S Ir, is related to some soil parameters, such as VS,30, the fundamental frequency of vibration of the soil column, F0, and seismic impedance contrast, Iw. Analyzing the standard deviation of the residual obtained from regression analyses of Fa versus VS,30, F0, and Iw shows that F0 is the most helpful parameter for the prediction of Fa. Hence F0 appears to be more appropriate than VS,30 and Iw for the characterization of the seismic response of a site and, therefore, should not be disregarded in building code soil classifications.

A comprehensive program of field, laboratory, and analytical investigations was carried out to evaluate the potential of liquefaction for the foundation soils at Duncan Dam. Duncan Dam was completed in 1967 under the Columbia River Treaty in southeastern British Columbia. The 39 m high zoned embankment dam is founded on a sequence of sands, silts, and gravels. Some of the foundation soils may liquefy during earthquake loading and this would affect the stability and performance of the dam. The liquefaction studies were carried out in two phases to characterize the engineering properties of the foundation soils and to assess its potential for triggering liquefaction using the total stress approach. This paper describes methods of assessment of liquefaction potential using soil parameters based on field penetration data (Seed's method) and laboratory testing of undisturbed soil samples obtained in situ after freezing the ground (Lab method) and presents the results of triggering analysis. Influence of confining stress (Kσ) and initial static shear stress (Kα) on liquefaction were investigated and site-specific Kσ and Kα curves were developed. For the design earthquake (M 6.5, PGA = 0.12g) both the Lab method and Seed's method predict a significant extent of liquefaction of the foundation soils under the downstream slope in the right half of the dam. Key words : sand, liquefaction, confining stress, density, cyclic resistance ratio.

This study presents a comprehensive set of laboratory works for the examined soil layers extracted from Baghdad city (specifically from Alkadhimya, Alaitaifiya, and Alhurriya) to illustrate their engineering properties. The researchers have adopted the unified soil classification system for soil classification purposes. Also, the direct shear test was performed for soil samples with various degrees of saturation (0%, 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100%). The test results have shown a significant reduction in cohesion property with higher moisture content within soil samples. Also, a noticeable reduction in angle of internal friction value has occurred with such changes. Furthermore, it has been found that the bearing capacity of unsaturated soils ranged between 2000 and 3000 KPa, and about 500-700 KPa for the soaked soil samples.
