In this study, B4C-TiB2 ceramic composites were manufactured by hot pressing method. The raw materials for the in-situ synthesis of TiB2 were TiO2 and TiC. After being sintered at 1900°C for 60min under a pressure of 30MPa, compact composites samples with a TiB2 volume fraction range from 0 to 11.05% were prepared. The relative density, fracture toughness and flexural strength of different sample were tested. Microstructures on the fracture surface were studied by SEM. The result shows that B4C-TiB2 ceramic composites sintered from B4C-TiC had a better mechanical property than the one sintered from B4C-TiO2. When the content of TiB2 (reacted from TiC) was 11.05vol.%, the strength and toughness of B4C-TiB2 ceramics can reach 598MPa and 6.45MPa·m1/2. The toughening mechanisms of B4C-TiB2 composites include micro-crack toughening and energy consumption by the pulling out process of second phase.

Al2O3-Ti(C,N)composite ceramics were prepared by in situ aluminothermic reduction and pressureless sintering. The effects of different Ti(C,N) contents and sintering temperatures on microstructure and mechanical properties (bulk density ,apparent porosity and blending strength)of samples were investigated through experiments. The results show that Al2O3-Ti(C,N) composite ceramics with 10 wt.% Ti(C,N) prepared using titanium dioxide and metal aluminum powder as raw materials and sintered at 1300 °C for 3h under a flowing nitrigen stream have good properties ,with bulk density 2.94g/cm3,apparent porosity 26.4%, and blending strength reaches to 28.04 MPa. According to the microstructure analysis, the fine in situ synthesis Ti(C,N) particles are uniformly dispersed in tabular alundum matrix. Ti(C,N) and tabular alundum phases are closely combined and can inhibit grain growth each other, which is benefical in improving the comprehensive properties of composite ceramics.

In-situ synthesis, microstructure, and mechanical properties of four TiB2-Reinforced Fe-Cr-Mn-Al Steel Matrix Composites have been researched in this work. The microstructure and phases of the prepared specimens have been characterized by using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction technique, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The sintered specimens consisted of Fe2AlCr, CrFeB-type boride, and TiB2. The mechanical properties, such as hardness and compression strength at room temperature (RT) and at elevated temperatures (600 °C and 800 °C) have been evaluated. The compressive strength and Vickers hardness of the sintered specimens increase with the volume fraction of TiB2 in the matrix, which are all much higher than those of the ex-situ TiB2/Fe-15Cr-20Mn-8Al composites and the reported TiB2/Fe-Cr composites with the same volume fraction of TiB2. The highest Vickers hardness and compressive strength at room temperature are 1213 ± 35 HV and 3500 ± 20 MPa, respectively. As the testing temperature increases to 600 °C, or even 800 °C, these composites still show relatively high compressive strength. Precipitation strengthening of CrFeB and in-situ synthesis of TiB2 as well as nanocrystalline microstructure produced by the combination of mechanical alloying (MA) and spark plasma sintering (SPS) can account for the high Vickers hardness and compressive strength.

AbstractIn this study, Ti3(Al,Ga)C2/Al2O3 composites were successfully synthesized by in situ hot pressing at 1350 °C for 2 h using Ti, Al, TiC, and Ga2O3 as raw materials. X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy were used for characterizing the phase identities and microstructures of the sintered composites. The dependence of the Vickers hardness and flexural strength on the Al2O3 content was found to be in single-peak type. Ti3(Al0.6,Ga0.4)C2/10.3vol%Al2O3 composite exhibited significantly improved mechanical properties. Vickers hardness and flexural strength of the composite reached 6.58 GPa and 527.11 MPa, which were 40% and 74% higher than those of Ti3AlC2, respectively. Formation of solid solution and incorporation of second phase of Al2O3 resulted in the opposite influence on the fracture toughness. Finally, the hardening and strengthening mechanisms were discussed in detail.

An Fe/FeAl2O4 composite was prepared with Fe-Fe2O3-Al2O3 powder by a hot press sintering method. The mass ratio was 6:1:2, sintering pressure was 30 MPa, and holding time was 120 min. The raw materials for the powder particles were respectively 1 µm (Fe), 0.5 µm (Fe2O3), and 1 µm (Al2O3) in diameter. The effect of sintering temperature on the microstructure and mechanical properties of Fe/FeAl2O4 composite was studied. The results showed that Fe/FeAl2O4 composite was formed by in situ reaction at 1300 °C–1500 °C. With the increased sintering temperature, the microstructure and mechanical properties of the Fe/FeAl2O4 composite showed a change law that initially became better and then became worse. The best microstructure and optimal mechanical properties were obtained at 1400 °C. At this temperature, the grain size of Fe and FeAl2O4 phases in Fe/FeAl2O4 composite was uniform, the relative density was 96.7%, and the Vickers hardness and bending strength were 1.88 GPa and 280.0 MPa, respectively. The wettability between Fe and FeAl2O4 was enhanced with increased sintering temperature. And then the densification process was accelerated. Finally, the microstructure and mechanical properties of the Fe/FeAl2O4 composite were improved.

Fully dense (ZrB2+ZrC)/Zr3[Al (Si)]4C6 composites with ZrB2 content varying from 0 to 15 vol.% and fixed ZrC content of 10 vol.% were successfully prepared by in situ hot-pressing in Ar atmosphere using ZrH2, Al, Si, C and B4C as raw materials. With the increase of ZrB2 content, both the bending strength and fracture toughness of the composites increase and then decrease. The synergistic action of ZrB2 and ZrC as reinforcements shows significant strengthening and toughing effect to the Zr3[Al (Si)]4C6 matrix. The composite with 10 vol.% ZrB2 shows the optimal mechanical properties: 516 MPa for bending strength and 6.52 MPa·m1/2 for fracture toughness. With the increase of ZrB2 content, the Vickers hardness of the composites shows a near-linear increase from 15.3 GPa to 16.7 GPa. The strengthening and toughening effect can be ascribed to the unique mechanical properties of ZrB2 and ZrC reinforcements, the differences in coefficient of thermal expansion and modulus between them and Zr3[Al (Si)]4C6 matrix, fine grain strengthening and uniform microstructure derived by the in situ synthesis reaction.

This study investigates micro-structural and mechanical properties of trabecular bone in human femoral head with and without osteoporosis using a micro-CT and a finite element model. 15 cored trabecular bone specimens with 20 of diameter were obtained from femoral heads with osteoporosis resected for total hip arthroplasty, and 5 specimens were removed from femoral head of cadavers, which has no history of musculoskeletal diseases. A high-resolution micro-CT system was used to scan each specimen to obtain histomorphometry indexes. Based on the micro-images, a FE-model was created to determine mechanical property indexes. While the non-osteoporosis group had increases the trabecular thickness, the bone volume, the bone volume fraction, the degree of anisotropy and the trabecular number compared with those of osteoporotic group, the non-osteoporotic group showed decreases in trabecular separation and structure model index. Regarding the mechanical property indexes, the reaction force and the Young's modulus were lower in the osteoporotic group than in non-osteoporotic group. Our data shows salient deteriorations in trabecular micro-structural and mechanical properties in human femoral head with osteoporosis.

Abstract Accurate characterization of oilwell cement mechanical properties is a prerequisite for maintaining long-term wellbore integrity. The drawback of the most widely used technique is unable to measure the mechanical property under in situ curing environment. We developed a high pressure and high temperature vessel that can hydrate cement under downhole conditions and directly measure its elastic modulus and Poisson's ratio at any interested time point without cooling or depressurization. The equipment has been validated by using water and a reasonable bulk modulus of 2.37 GPa was captured. Neat Class G cement was hydrated in this equipment for seven days under axial stress of 40 MPa, and an in situ measurement in the elastic range shows elastic modulus of 37.3 GPa and Poisson's ratio of 0.15. After that, the specimen was taken out from the vessel, and setted up in the triaxial compression platform. Under a similar confining pressure condition, elastic modulus was 23.6 GPa and Possion's ratio was 0.26. We also measured the properties of cement with the same batch of the slurry but cured under ambient conditions. The elastic modulus was 1.63 GPa, and Poisson's ratio was 0.085. Therefore, we found that the curing condition is significant to cement mechanical property, and the traditional cooling or depressurization method could provide mechanical properties that were quite different (50% difference) from the in situ measurement.
