Metallic glass particle reinforced Al-6.5Si-0.25Mg (wt%) alloy matrix composites have been fabricated using infiltration casting process. The Al-Si-Mg alloy melt infiltrates into the porous Ni-Nb-Ta metallic glass pre-form by applying the pressure. The Ni60Nb20Ta20 metallic glass particles are homogeneously distributed in the matrix. The composite exhibits higher yield strength than the monolithic Al-6.5Si-0.25Mg (wt%) alloy.

In this study, graphene-oxide (GO)-reinforced Ti–Al–Sn–Zr–Mo–Nb–Si high-temperature titanium-alloy-matrix composites were fabricated by powder metallurgy. The mixed powders with well-dispersed GO sheets were obtained by temperature-controlled solution mixing, in which GO sheets adsorb on the surface of titanium alloy particles. Vacuum deoxygenating was applied to remove the oxygen-containing groups in GO, in order to reduce the introduction of oxygen. The compact composites with refined equiaxed and lamellar α phase structures were prepared by hot isostatic pressing (HIP). The results show that in-situ TiC layers form on the surface of GO and GO promotes the precipitation of hexagonal (TiZr)6Si3 particles. The composites exhibit significant improvement in strength and microhardness. The room-temperature tensile strength, yield strength and microhardness of the composite added with 0.3 wt% GO are 9%, 15% and 27% higher than the matrix titanium alloy without GO, respectively, and the tensile strength and yield strength at 600 °C are 3% and 21% higher than the matrix alloy. The quantitative analysis indicates that the main strengthening mechanisms are load transfer strengthening, grain refinement and (TiZr)6Si3 second phase strengthening, which accounted for 48%, 30% and 16% of the improvement of room-temperature yield strength, respectively.

In this work, vanadium particles (VP) were utilized as a novel reinforcement of AZ31 magnesium (Mg) alloy. The nanocrystalline (NC) AZ31–VP composites were prepared via mechanical milling (MM) and vacuum hot-press sintering. During the milling process, the presence of VP contributed to the cold welding and fracture mechanism, resulting in the acceleration of the milling process. Additionally, increasing the VP content accelerated the grain refinement of the matrix during the milling process. After milling for 90 h, the average grain size of AZ31-X wt % Vp (X = 5, 7.5, 10) was refined to only about 23 nm, 19 nm and 16 nm, respectively. In the meantime, VP was refined to sub-micron scale and distributed uniformly in the matrix, exhibiting excellent interfacial bonding with the matrix. After the sintering process, the average grain size of AZ31-X wt % VP (X = 5, 7.5, 10) composites still remained at the NC scale, which was mainly caused by the pinning effect of VP. Besides that, the porosity of the sintered composites was no more than 7.8%, indicating a good densification effect. As a result, there was little difference between the theoretical and real density. Compared to as-cast AZ31 Mg alloy, the microhardness of sintered AZ31-X wt % VP (X = 5, 7.5, 10) composites increased by 65%, 87% and 96%, respectively, owing to the strengthening mechanisms of grain refinement strengthening, Orowan strengthening and load-bearing effects.

Nano-fly ash particles reinforced Al-10wt%Mg alloy matrix composites produced by stir-casting method were tested for their ageing response. Ageing studies were performed at 160 °C, 200 °C and 240 °C temperatures and a maximum peak hardness of 142 VHN was observed during ageing at 200 °C for the composite with 10 wt% nano fly ash reinforcement. This is due to rapid nucleation and growth of βI particles at this temperature. Experiments were designed for different compositions and different ageing temperatures on the basis of the Design of Experiments technique. The factorial design is considered to improve the reliability of results and to reduce the size of experimentation without loss of accuracy. A model to predict the ageing behaviour of the composites was developed with the terms of 5, 10 and 15% weight fraction of fly ash at 160 °C, 200 °C and 240 °C ageing temperatures. The developed regression model was validated by statistical software MINITAB-R17.1.0. It was found that the developed regression model could be effectively used to predict the ageing behavior at 95% confidence level.

The yield strength of a Zr-based bulk metallic glass was improved by up to 20% in comparison to the as-received alloy via dispersion of graphite nanoparticles into the matrix. The resulting material also had high plasticity and good elasticity and the use of reinforcement particles was found to suppress heterogeneous nucleation. The graphite nanoparticles additionally improved the alloy’s thermal stability as compared to that of the monolithic alloy.

Carbon with an amorphous structure was used as a component to modify the tribological properties of engineering plastics. Its construction allows the formation of carbon-based wear products during friction, adhesively bonded to the surface of cooperating machine parts, acting as a solid lubricant. The work compares the tribological properties of two groups of composites with an aluminium alloy matrix in which glassy carbon appeared in the form of particles and an open cell foam fulfilling the role of strengthening the matrix. The use of spatial structures of reinforcement provides, in comparison with the strengthening of particles, homogeneity of carbon distribution in the entire volume of the composite. The tests carried out on a pin-disc tester showed that the use of spatial carbon structures in the composite ensures a greater coefficient of friction stability than when reinforcing with particles, and the coefficient of friction with a small proportion of carbon foams (about 1 wt%) is comparable with the coefficient of friction in the contact with composites containing 5-10% carbon particles in granular form.

Magnesium metal matrix composites (MMCs) have been receiving attention in recent years as an attractive choice for aerospace and automotive applications because of their low density and superior specific properties. Using stir casting process, AZ91 magnesium alloy metal matrix composites have been produced with different weight percentages (5, 10, 15, 20 and 25) of silicon carbide particles (SiCp) addition. Microstructural characterization reveals uniform distribution of SiC particles with good interfacial bonding between the matrix and reinforcement. Electrical conductivity and Co-efficient of Thermal Expansion (CTE) measurements carried out on these composites have yielded better properties. Improved mechanical properties such as hardness, ultimate tensile strength, and compressive strength are obtained. The microfracture mechanisms involved during tensile fracture is analyzed and correlated with the properties obtained.
