Investigations of mechanical properties of nanocrystalline (nc) materials are still in interest of materials science, because they offer wide application as structural materials thanks to their outstanding mechanical properties. NC materials demonstrate superior hardness and strength as compared with their coarse grained counterparts, but very often they possess a limited ductility or show low uniform elongation due to poor strain hardening ability. Here, we present the results of investigation of the microstructure and mechanical properties of nc Pd and Pd-x%Ag (x=20, 60) alloys. The initially coarse grained Pd-x% Ag samples were processed by high pressure torsion, which resulted in formation of homogenous ultrafine grain structure. The increase of Ag contents led to the decrease of the resulted grain size and change in deformation behavior, because of decreasing of stacking fault energy (SFE). The samples with larger Ag contents demonstrated the higher values of hardness, yield stress and ultimate stress. Remarkably the uniform elongation had also increased with increase of strength.

The article presents the change in mechanical properties of AlZn9Mg2.5Cu1.8 alloy resulting from the process of solution heat treatment and aging. The heat treatment was performed on a unique UMSA (Universal Metallurgical Simulator and Analyzer) device. The aim of the study was to determine optimum heat treatment parameters for the tested alloy of ultrafine grain structure obtained by Rapid Solidification (RS). To achieve this purpose, heat treatment to the T4 and T6 condition was carried out. The solution heat treatment was carried out at a constant temperature of 460 °C for 2 hours, while the time - temperature parameters of the aging process varied. The treatment undertaken resulted in improved mechanical properties.

A copper alloy, Cu-0.1% Zr, was processed at room temperature by high-pressure torsion (HPT) in order to evaluate the microstructural evolution and grain refinement mechanism. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) techniques were employed to measure the grain morphology, grain size distributions and the distribution of the misorientation angles. The results demonstrate that this processing procedure has a potential for producing an ultrafine-grain structure containing reasonably equiaxed grain with high-angle boundary misorientations. The grain refinement mechanism is primarily governed by dislocation activities.

AbstractThe ultrafine grain structure is very difficult to fabricate by severe plastic deformation (SPD) for metals with poor formability. In this paper, a fabrication technology of ultrafine structured dissimilar laminated metal composite sheets (LMCS) was developed for poor plastic metals which have low elongation by hot accumulative roll bonding (ARB) in conjunction with cold rolling. The hot ARBed 1100/7075 LMCS was cold rolled at room temperature after recrystallization annealing treatment. An ultrafine structured dissimilar LMCS was obtained without undergoing severe cold rolled deformation. The mechanical properties were enhanced and optimized by using heat treatment technology. The accelerated refining mechanism of grain was revealed by microstructure characterization of the composite sheet. The enhanced strength was mainly derived from the fine layers, refined grains, increased dislocation accumulation, and abundant dispersoids. The results of the research are helpful in improving the mechanical properties of dissimilar LMCS and optimizing the preparation technology.

A grain size is known to be one of the factors which define mechanical properties of metallic materials. At the same time the mechanisms which regulate the deformation behavior of bulk ultrafine-grained (UFG) metals produced by the severe plastic deformation method are still a subject for intensive study and fixed ambiguously. The report presents the developed model and the results of its application for kinetic modeling of the deformation behavior of coarse-grained (CG) and UFG Ti. Modeling has been carried out considering the possible contribution of dislocation slip and ageing. Conclusions about the role of the investigated mechanisms in the appearance of the peculiarities of the deformation behavior of CG and UFG Ti have been made.

The synthesis of ultrafine-grained (UFG) materials is very attractive because small grains lead to excellent creep properties including superplastic ductility at elevated temperatures. Severe plastic deformation (SPD) is an attractive processing technique for refining microstructures of metallic materials to have ultrafine grain sizes within the submicrometer to even the nanometer level. Among the SPD techniques, most effective processing is conducted through equal-channel angular pressing (ECAP) and high-pressure torsion (HPT) and there are numerous reports demonstrating the improved tensile properties at elevated temperature. This report demonstrates recent results on superplasticity in metals after ECAP and HPT. Moreover, superplastic flow of the UFG materials is evaluated by using flow mechanisms developed earlier for coarse-grained materials and depicted by plotting deformation mechanism maps which provide excellent visual representations of flow properties over a wide range of testing conditions.

ELECTROCHEMISTRY STUDY ON THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN GRAIN BOUNDARY STATE AND CORROSION BEHAVIOR OF ULTRAFINE GRAINED IRON CHROMIUM ALLOY. Research on stainless steel corrosion resistance continues to grow today. This reality cannot be separated from the needs of stainless steels in various fields, one of which is bio-implant. In this research, the effect of grain size on the corrosion behavior of iron-chromium (Fe-Cr) alloy was investigated. Coarse grain Fe-Cr alloy was first processed with equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) for eight cycles to obtain ultrafine grain structure. The coarse and ultrafine grain samples then were then tested using XRD, SEM-EBSD, and the pitting corrosion properties tested using potentiodynamic polarization method in NaCl 1 M solution. The result of XRD dan SEM-EBSD shows that the initial sample is truly has a coarse grain structure, while ECAP produces an ultrafine grain structure. Corrosion test results showed that the ultrafine grain sample had better pitting corrosion resistance compared to the coarse grain sample. This behavior is related to the rate of passivation that depends on non-equilibrium grain boundaries, which can be easily observed in the ultrafine grain structure. Based on these results, it can be concluded that the ultrafine grain Fe-Cr alloy has a better corrosion resistance compared to the coarse grain.

It is known that titanium and its alloys are one of the promising materials in the industry, especially in medicine, due to their excellent biocompatibility and corrosion resistance. The latest modern equipment and instruments used in traumatology, orthopedics, dentistry, etc. demand increasingly higher mechanical properties for materials. In comparison with commercially pure titanium, alloys do not have such high corrosion-resistant properties and biocompatibility. In this regard, improving the mechanical characteristics of a pure material is an urgent issue. The authors studied the effect of annealing on the structure and properties of commercially pure grade 4 titanium in the coarse-grained and ultrafine-grained states. The ultrafine-grained state was obtained using high-pressure torsion (HPT) under the pressure of 6 GPa at N=10 revolutions at room temperature. In the microstructure investigated using transmission electron microscopy, the authors could detect particles of precipitated phases after annealing, which had different morphologies. Deformation leads to an increase in the precipitated particles after annealing. The authors carried out an X-ray phase analysis, which showed the approximation of the lattice parameters of the α-phase after deformation and annealing at 700 °C to the values of the parameters of pure titanium. Thus, aging processes occur in the material, accompanied by the decomposition of the supersaturated solid solution and the release of particles of the second phase. The paper shows the results of titanium microhardness measurements in different states. The combined treatment, consisting of HPT at N=5 revolutions, annealing at 700 °C, and additional HPT deformation at N=5 revolutions, allowed obtaining the record strength for commercially pure grade 4 titanium.

Severe plastic deformation is an effective method for improving the mechanical properties of metallic alloys through promoting the grain structure. In the present work, simple cyclic extrusion compression technique (SCEC) has been developed for producing a fine structure of cast Al-1 wt. % Cu alloy and consequently enhancing the mechanical properties of the studied alloy. It was found that the grain structure was significantly reduced from 1500 µm to 100 µm after two passes of cyclic extrusion. The ultimate tensile strength and elongation to failure of the as-cast alloy were 110 MPa and 12 %, respectively. However, the corresponding mechanical properties of the two pass CEC deformed alloy are 275 MPa and 35%, respectively. These findings ensure that a significant improvement in the grain structure has been achieved. Also, cyclic extrusion deformation increased the surface hardness of the alloy by 49 % after two passes. FE-simulation model was adopted to simulate the deformation behavior of the material during the cyclic extrusion process using DEFORMTM-3D Ver11.0. The FE-results revealed that SCEC technique was able to impose severe plastic strains with the number of passes. The model was able to predict the damage, punch load, back pressure, and deformation behavior.

AbstractIn this study, static, dynamic and tribological properties of ultrafine-grained (UFG) oxygen-free high thermal conductivity (OFHC) copper were investigated in detail. In order to evaluate the mechanical behaviour at different strain rates, OFHC copper was tested using two devices resulting in static and dynamic regimes. Moreover, the copper was subjected to two different processing methods, which made possible to study the influence of structure. The study of strain rate and microstructure was focused on progress in the mechanical properties after tensile tests. It was found that the strain rate is an important parameter affecting mechanical properties of copper. The ultimate tensile strength increased with the strain rate increasing and this effect was more visible at high strain rates$({\dot \varepsilon} \sim 10^2 \;{\rm{s}}^{ - 1} )$. However, the reduction of area had a different progress depending on microstructural features of materials (coarse-grained vs. ultrafine-grained structure) and introduced strain rate conditions during plastic deformation (static vs. dynamic regime). The wear behaviour of copper was investigated through pin-on-disk tests. The wear tracks examination showed that the delamination and the mild oxidational wears are the main wear mechanisms.

Grain refinement can make conventional metals several times stronger, but this comes at dramatic loss of ductility. Here we report a heterogeneous lamella structure in Ti produced by asymmetric rolling and partial recrystallization that can produce an unprecedented property combination: as strong as ultrafine-grained metal and at the same time as ductile as conventional coarse-grained metal. It also has higher strain hardening than coarse-grained Ti, which was hitherto believed impossible. The heterogeneous lamella structure is characterized with soft micrograined lamellae embedded in hard ultrafine-grained lamella matrix. The unusual high strength is obtained with the assistance of high back stress developed from heterogeneous yielding, whereas the high ductility is attributed to back-stress hardening and dislocation hardening. The process discovered here is amenable to large-scale industrial production at low cost, and might be applicable to other metal systems.
