For the first time, a unique expert system able to give assistance to designers in surface engineering has been built. Not only is this software able to provide multi-layer coating solutions, but it is also able to rank different solutions according to their technico-economical interest. In addition to its ability to solve corrosion and wear concerns, it is also able to deal with surface finishing properties (like brightness, weldability, electrical conductivity, biocompatibility, …). This paper describes the structure of this expert system together with its main operation principles and future developments.

The increase in short-term rentals via online platforms has captured the attention of scholars and regulators. Short-term letting is now considered a considerable alternative to traditional tourist accommodation contracts, challenging matters such as conditions in the housing market and consumer protection. Online platforms, such as Airbnb, Booking.com , Expedia and Tripadvisor, now provide offers for short-term accommodation contracts along with traditional accommodation options (hotels, hostels, apartments). The recent decision of the European Court of Justice in Joined cases C-724/18 and C-727/18 addresses for the first time the issue of regulation of short-term rentals in Member States and evaluates a national authorization scheme in light of the Services Directive. The present paper provides a brief background of European regulation affecting short-term rentals and discusses the judgment and its implications for future developments.

The anisotropy of anionic conductivity in crystals of a superionic conductor CeF3 with the tysonite structure (sp. gr. P-3с1) has been studied for the first time. The conductivity measurements at temperatures from 300 K to 600 K were carried out along the principal a- and c-axes of trigonal unit cell of the crystal. The maximum value of electrical conductivity is observed along the c-axis. The superionic CeF3 crystals have the weak anisotropy of electrical conductivity equal to σ||c/σ||a = 2.4 and σ||c = 5.6 10–4 S/cm at 500 K. The anisotropy effect of anionic conductivity in individual fluorides with the tysonite structure is discussed in connection with the peculiarities of their atomic structure.

Abstract In this paper, the front-end circuit of a capacitance wire-mesh sensor (WMS) is analyzed in detail and a new methodology to tune its feedback gains is reported. This allows, for the first time, a capacitance WMS to be able to provide linear measurements of multiphase fluids with electrical conductivity greater than 100 𝜇S/cm, which is particularly important for tap water, where the conductivity is typically in between 100 S/cm and 500 𝜇S/cm. Experimental and numerical results show that the selected gains using the proposed methodology contribute to suppress cross-talk and energy losses, which in turn, reduces considerably the deviation of the conductivity measurement and the estimation of derived flow parameters, such as local and average phase fraction.

Polyanionic cathode materials for lithium-ion batteries start to be considered as potential alternative for layered oxide materials. Among them, Li 2 CoSiO 4, characterized by outstanding capacity and working voltage, seems to be an interesting substitute for LiFePO 4 and related systems. In this work, structural and electrical investigations of Li 2 CoSiO 4 obtained by sol–gel synthesis were presented. Thermal decomposition of gel precursor was studied using EGA (FTIR)-TGA method. Chemical composition of the obtained material was confirmed using X-ray diffraction and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. The morphology of β- Li 2 CoSiO 4 was studied using transmission electron microscopy. High temperature electrical conductivity of Li 2 CoSiO 4 was measured for the first time. Activation energies of the electrical conductivity of two Li 2 CoSiO 4 polymorphs (β and γ) were determined. The room temperature electrical conductivity of those materials was estimated as well.

New oxidative polymerization monomers—diarylaminodichlorobenzoquinones were synthesised by alkylating aniline, m-phenylenediamine and methanilic acid with chloranil. Oxidative polymerization of diarylaminodichlorobenzoquinones was studied for the first time in relation to the concentration of the monomer, acid, and oxidant/monomer ratio. It was found that the synthesized monomers are highly active in the polymerization reaction, and the oxidation rate grows with the increase in the acid concentration. Only one arylamine group is involved in the polymerization reaction. The optimal oxidant/monomer ratio is stoichiometric for one arylamine group, despite the bifunctionality of the monomers. It was shown that the type of the substituent in the aniline ring (electron donor or electron acceptor) determines the growth of the polymer chain and the structure of the resulting conjugated polymers. A mechanism for the formation of active polymerization centers for diarylaminodichlorobenzoquinones was proposed. FTIR-, NMR-, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and SEM were used to identify the structure of the synthesized monomers and polymers. The obtained polymers have an amorphous structure and a loose globular morphology. The frequency dependence of the electrical conductivity was studied.

Jet production at hadron colliders provides powerful constraints on the parton distribution functions (PDFs) of the proton, in particular on the gluon PDF. Jet production can also be used to extract the QCD coupling [Formula: see text] and to test its running with the momentum transfer up to the TeV region. In this review, I summarize the information on PDFs and the strong coupling that has been provided by Run I LHC jet data. First of all, I discuss why jet production is directly sensitive to the gluon and quark PDFs at large-x, and then review the state-of-the-art perturbative calculations for jet production at hadron colliders and the corresponding fast calculations required for PDF fitting. Then I present the results of various recent studies on the impact on PDFs, in particular the gluon, that have been performed using as input jet measurements from ATLAS and CMS. I also review the available determinations of the strong coupling constant based on ATLAS and CMS jet data, with emphasis on the fact that LHC jet data provides, for the first time, a direct test of the [Formula: see text] running at the TeV scale. I conclude with a brief outlook on possible future developments.

Abstract Berylco 33 25 is a free-machining beryllium copper alloy which has substantially the same mechanical properties and response to heat treatment as the standard Berylco 25, but which can be machined in 40 percent of the time. The alloy has high strength and hardness, a high fatigue strength, good resistance to corrosion and wear and good electrical conductivity.
