The corrosion behavior and microstructure of hot extruded Mg-5 wt.%Sn-4 wt.%Al-2 wt.%Ce alloy by rapid solidification ribbon (RS-EX TAE542) are investigated. The results shows that corrosion resistance of RS-EX alloy is remarkably improved, compared with that of hot extruded TAE542 alloy by homogenized ingot (HI-EX TAE542). Relatively compact corrosion products and bedded corrosion surface of RS-EX alloy is connected with the fine grains and uniform particles caused by rapid solidification, and they can suppress the corrosion reactions.

The corrosion behavior of AZ91-0.4%Nd alloys was investigated by immersion test in 3.5wt.% NaCl at 25°C. The phase compositions and microstructure of the AZ91-0.4%Nd alloy were characterized by XRD and OM, respectively. The results show that the number of Nd element in the AZ91 magnesium alloy has effect on the grain refining efficiency, and the granular or acicular Al3Nd phase precipitate in matrix. The corrosion products of the AZ91-0.4%Nd alloy mainly composed of Mg(OH)2and Al. The addition of Nd element significantly refine the microstructure and improve the compactness of corrosion products of AZ91-0.4%%Nd magnesium alloy, as a result the corrosion resistance of alloy was improved obviously.

The corrosion behavior of as-cast AZ91C magnesium alloy was studied by performing friction stir processing (FSP) and FSP followed by solution annealing and then aging. Phase analysis, microstructural characterization, potentiodynamic polarization test and immersion tests were carried out to relate the corrosion behavior to the samples microstructure. The microstructural observations revealed the breakage and dissolution of coarse dendritic microstructure as well as the coarse secondary [Formula: see text]-Mg[Formula: see text]Al[Formula: see text] phase which resulted in a homogenized and fine grained microstructure (15[Formula: see text][Formula: see text]m). T6 heat treatment resulted in an excessive growth and dispersion of the secondary phases in the microstructure of FSP zone. The potentiodynamic polarization and immersion tests proved a significant effect of both FSP and FSP followed by T6 on increasing the corrosion resistance of the cast AZ91C magnesium alloy. Improve in corrosion resistance after FSP was attributed to grain refinement and elimination of segregations and casting defects which makes more adhesive passive layer. Increase in volume fraction of precipitations after T6 heat treatment is determined to be the main factor which stabilizes the passive layer at different polarization values and is considered to be responsible for increasing the corrosion resistance.

The strength of Mg–Li alloy is greatly improved by the composite strengthening of intermetallic compound YAl2 particles, but the low corrosion resistance of Mg–Li alloy is still the main factor that restricts the application of the alloy and its composites. In this paper, the effect of YAl2 particles on the corrosion behavior of Mg–Li alloy was systematically investigated. The results showed that the corrosion resistance of YAl2p/LA143 composite could be significantly improved, accounting for the formation of a transitional interface layer by adding YAl2 particles. The diffusion of yttrium and aluminum atoms from YAl2 particulates improved the stability of the surface film and enhanced the adhesion between the corrosion products and the substrate, which hindered further expansion of pitting.

Corrosion behavior of 60Si2Mn-A and 60Si2Mn-B in simulated industrial atmospheric environment was investigated by alternate immersion corrosion test and electrochemical method. The phase, morphology, characteristics of corrosion products, and the distribution of Cr, Cu, and Ni in the corrosion products of experimental steel were studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and electron probe microanalyzer (EPMA). The results show that the phase of rust layer is Fe3O4 and γ-FeOOH in the early stage and then changes to α-FeOOH and γ-FeOOH in the later stage; the size of the rust layer with corrosion resistance of 60Si2Mn is less than 60Si2Mn; the Cr element accumulates in the rust layer of the experimental steel in the early stage of corrosion resistance; and Cu, Ni, and Cr in the corrosion resistance 60Si2Mn are concentrated in the rust layer near the substrate In the later stage of corrosion. As the corrosion cycle is prolonged, the corrosion potential and the resistance of the rust layer of the experimental steel increases, and the corrosion current decreases; in the same corrosion cycle, the corrosion potential and corrosion resistance of 60Si2Mn-B are greater than 60Si2Mn, and the corrosion current is less than 60Si2Mn.

The corrosion behavior of duplex Ni-P coatings deposited on AZ91 magnesium alloy was studied. The electroless deposition process of duplex Ni-P coating consisted in the preparation of low-phosphorus Ni-P coating (5.7 wt.% of P), which served as a bond coating and high-phosphorus Ni-P coating (11.5 wt.% of P) deposited on it. The duplex Ni-P coatings with the thickness of 25, 50, 75 and 100 µm were deposited on AZ91 magnesium alloy. The electrochemical corrosion behavior of coated AZ91 magnesium alloy was investigated by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and potentiodynamic polarization method in 0.1 M NaCl. Obtained results showed a significant improvement in the corrosion resistance of coated specimens when compared to uncoated AZ91 magnesium alloy. From the results of the immersion tests in 3.5 wt.% NaCl, 10% solution of HCl and NaOH and 5% neutral salt spray, a noticeable increase in the corrosion resistance with the increasing thickness of the Ni-P coating was observed.

HIPIB irradiation experiment is carried out at a specific ion current density of 1.1 J/cm2 with shot number from one to ten in order to explore the effect of shot number on electrochemical corrosion behavior of magnesium alloy. Surface morphologies, microstructure and corrosion resistance of the irradiated samples are examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM) and potentiodynamic polarization technique, respectively. It is found that HIPIB irradiation leads to the increase in open circuit potential, corrosion potential and breakdown potential, and the decrease in the corrosion current density and the corrosion rate as compared to the original sample. The improved corrosion resistance is mainly attributed to the grain refinement and surface purification induced by HIPIB irradiation.

AbstractThe present paper investigated the impact of cerium on the corrosion resistance of zinc coating in a 5 % NaCl solution. Electrochemistry was used to measure the electrochemical parameters to compare the corrosion resistance of the zinc coating with that of the cerium conversion coating on the galvanized layer. SEM/EDS and XRD were adopted to analyze the appearance and phases of corrosion products of the cerium conversion coating and to probe the impact of cerium on the corrosion behavior of zinc coating in the Cl–media. The results showed that the cerium conversion coating formed on the zinc coating increased the zinc’s corrosion resistance effectively, conversion coating with lower cerium content protected the substrate poorly, resulting in easy erosion of the zinc coating in the Cl–media. The corrosion products mainly consist of complexes, such as Zn(OH)xClyand Ce(OH)xCly.

Ternary Ni-W-P coating was synthesized from a sulfate nickel bath. The planting rate is about 10µm/h, and the bath shows a reasonable stability. The coating shows a good adhesion to the substrate. The microhardness and corrosion resistance of the Ni–W–P deposits were found to be better when compared to plain Ni–P deposits. Also, the Ni-W-P coating with a high W content exhibits a better hardness and corrosion resistance than that with a low W content.
