INFLUENCE OF AGE AND BREED ON CIRCULATING LH, FSH AND TESTOSTERONE LEVELS IN THE RAM

Possible age and breed differences in circulating levels of luteinizing hormone (LH), follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) and testosterone in the ram were investigated. In exp. 1, blood was collected from a group of 28 rams of various ages and breeds by venepuncture from the jugular vein at 20-min intervals for an 8-h period (May). Comparison of mean serum hormone concentrations for postpubertal Finnish Landrace (Finn), Suffolk and Managra Synthetic (Line M) rams did not reveal significant (P > 0.10) breed differences. However, when rams of the three breeds were categorized by age, the mean (±SE) LH levels in lambs (n = 8), yearling (n = 12) and adult (n = 8) animals were 2.1 ± 0.4, 1.1 ± 0.2 and 0.5 ± 0.1 ng/mL, respectively; the significant decrease (P < 0.05) in LH levels in adult vs. yearling rams was due to fewer and smaller LH releases. Mean testosterone levels averaged 1.3 ± 0.2, 2.8 ± 0.4 and 2.4 ± 0.3 ng/mL for the lamb, yearling and adult ram groups, respectively. FSH levels were similar for all age groups. In exp. 2, a series of blood samples were collected from 3-mo-old Finn (n = 6) and Suffolk/Line-M crossbred (n = 6) rams in October. In comparison with crossbred rams, rams of the more prolific Finn breed exhibited substantially higher mean levels of LH (1.0 ± 0.2 vs. 0.4 ± 0.2 ng/mL; P < 0.10), FSH (250 ± 26 vs. 121 ± 16 ng/mL; P < 0.01) and testosterone (2.8 ± 0.9 vs. 0.4 ± 0.1 ng/mL; P < 0.05); higher LH and testosterone in Finn rams were associated with larger and/or more frequent elevations in the level of these hormones during the 8-h bleeding period. Results of this study seem to indicate (1) age-associated differences in the pattern of LH release in adult rams in the spring; and (2) that breed differences in blood reproductive hormone levels in postpubertal rams are not significant in the spring, but levels in 3-mo-old rams differ during the fall months according to genotype. Pituitary and testicular endocrine responses to exogenous gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH) and luteinizing hormone (LH), respectively, were assessed for adult rams in an investigation of the regulation of seasonal changes in the patterns of episodic LH and testosterone secretion. Concurrent variations in testis size and in circulating levels of follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) and prolactin (PRL) were also examined. On 10 occasions throughout the year, serum hormone levels were assessed over 6- to 8-h periods during which time rams were left untreated (day 1) or were injected (iv) with single doses of either 10 μg synthetic GnRH (day 2) or 30 μg NIH-LH-S18 (day 3); blood samples were collected from the jugular vein at 10- or 20-min intervals. Testicular redevelopment during the summer, as indicated by increasing testis diameter measurements, was associated with increases in mean FSH level and was preceded by a springtime rise in mean PRL level; "spontaneously" occurring LH pulses and those produced in response to GnRH treatment were relatively large during this period. Increases in the magnitude of testosterone elevations in response to both endogenously and exogenously produced LH pulses occurred in August. Mean testosterone levels were elevated fourfold in the fall as a consequence of relatively frequent and small LH pulses stimulating a more responsive testis to produce more frequent and larger testosterone elevations; endogenous LH pulses, however, did not appear to stimulate the testes maximally at this time. Testicular regression occurred during the winter months and was characterized initially by decreases in testosterone levels without obvious changes in the pattern of pulsatile LH release and subsequently by a decrease in testicular responsiveness to relatively infrequent LH pulses which led to further decreases in testosterone levels and smaller testes. Results demonstrate that alterations in pituitary and testicular responsiveness to stimulatory hormones account in part for seasonal changes in the magnitude of LH and testosterone secretory pulses in adult rams.

Two experiments were conducted to investigate the relationship between circulating estrogen and testosterone levels in the adult ram. Experiment 1 involved assessing the mean concentration of these hormones in blood collected from eight rams during 8-h periods of both sexual inactivity and mating with estrus-induced ewes prior to and during the fall breeding season (early August, mid-September, early November and mid-December). Rams were bled at 20-min intervals by venipuncture of the jugular vein during all periods. Serum estrogen concentration increased approximately 40% to an average (± SE) of 11.2 ± 0.8 pg/mL between August and November, and in direct relation to testosterone concentration (r = 0.88); estrogen values were generally less than 0.2% of testosterone values. Mating activity was associated with increments in circulating estrogen in September only, while testosterone levels increased in both August and September. Frequency of mating (ejaculation) was highly and positively correlated with serum estrogen concentration among rams in August (r = 0.86) and within rams across months (r = 0.78). In exp. 2, the relationship between hour-to-hour fluctuations in estrogen and testosterone levels was examined for six rams in early winter. Rams were bled as in exp. 1 for 7 h, and two of the rams were given frequent intravenous injections of NIH-LH-S14 following the first 2 h of bleeding. Short-term variations in serum estrogen concentration were not consistently related to those in testosterone. Key words: Estrogen, season, mating, ram, testosterone, circulation

Pathological changes in the prostate gland occur commonly with advancing age including inflammation, atrophy, hyperplasia and carcinoma and a change in volume is also evident. Estimation of volume of prostate may be useful in a variety of clinical settings. A cross-sectional descriptive study was designed to see the changes in volume of the prostate with advancing age and done in the Department of Anatomy, Dhaka Medical College, Dhaka from August 2006 to June 2007. The study was performed on 70 post-mortem human prostates collected from the unclaimed dead bodies that were under examination in the Department of Forensic Medicine, Dhaka Medical College, Dhaka. The samples were divided into three age groups; group A (10-20 years), group B (21-40 years) and group C (41-70 years). Volume of the sample was measured by using the ellipsoid formula. The mean ± SD volume of prostate was 7.68 ± 3.64 cm3 in group A, 10.61 ± 3.99 cm3 in group B and 15.40 ± 6.31 cm3 in group C. Mean difference in volume between group A and group C, group B and group C were statistically significant (p<0.001). Background: There are a few studies about the evaluation of maxillary first premolars internal structure with micro-computed tomography (micro-CT). The aim of this study was to assess morphological features of the pulp chamber in maxillary first premolar teeth using micro- CT. Methods: Extracted 15 maxillary first premolar teeth were selected from the patients who were in different age groups. The distance between the pulp orifices, the diameter of the pulp and the width of the pulp chamber floor were measured on the micro-CT images with the slice thickness of 13.6 µm. The number of root canal orifices and the presence of isthmus were evaluated. Results: The mean diameter of orifices was 0.73 mm on the buccal side while it was 0.61 mm on palatinal side. The mean distance between pulp orifices was 2.84 mm. The mean angle between pulp orifices was -21.53°. The mean height of pulp orifices on the buccal side was 4.32 mm while the mean height of pulp orifices on the palatinal side was 3.56 mm. The most observed shape of root canal orifices was flattened ribbon. No isthmus was found in specimens. Conclusion: Minor anatomical structures can be evaluated in more detail with micro-CT. The observation of the pulp cavity was analyzed using micro-CT.

This study was carried out on clinical cases of retained fetal membranes in crossbred cows presented at College Clinics and College dairy farm and from Villages in and around Mhow. The blood samples were collected from jugular vein just before 12 hr. postpartum and on 7th day postpartum. Haematological profile revealed that the mean values of haemoglobin, neutrophil and monocyte count after 12 hrs and 7th day postpartum were significantly lower and lymphocyte count was significantly higher in RFM cows (n=18) than normally calved cows (n=6). The differences in mean TLC, eosinophil and basophil counts were non-significant at 12 hrs postpartum, however on 7th day postpartum the TLC and eosinophil count were significantly higher and basophil count was non-significantly different in RFM cows than the normally calved cows.

Abstract Purpose Collective evidence from single-centre studies suggests an increasing incidence of pilonidal sinus disease in the last decades, but population-based data is scarce. Methods We analysed administrative case–based principal diagnoses of pilonidal sinus disease and its surgical therapy between 2005 and 2017 in inpatients. Changes were addressed via linear regression. Results The mean rate of inpatient episodes of pilonidal sinus disease per 100,000 men increased from 43 in 2005 to 56 in 2017. In females, the mean rate of inpatient episodes per 100,000 women rose from 14 in 2005 to 18 in 2017. In the whole population, for every case per 100,000 females, there were 3.1 cases per 100,000 males, but the numbers were highly variable between the age groups. There was considerable regional variation within Germany. Rates of inpatient episodes of pilonidal sinus disease were increasing in almost all age groups and both sexes by almost a third. Surgery was dominated by excision of pilonidal sinus without reconstructive procedures, such as flaps, whose share was around 13% of all procedures, despite recommendations of the national guidelines to prefer flap procedures. Conclusion Rates of inpatient episodes of pilonidal sinus disease in Germany rose across almost all age groups and both sexes with relevant regional variation. The underlying causative factors are unknown. Thus, patient-centred research is necessary to explore them. This should also take cases into account that are solely treated office-based in order to obtain a full-spectrum view of pilonidal sinus disease incidence rates.

Background: Whole-cell pertussis (wP) vaccine administration is still advocated for children under 7 years of age in Iran. However, there is no recommendation for the administration of a dose of tetanus, diphtheria, and acellular pertussis (Tdap) vaccine to childbearing age/pregnant women in the Iranian vaccination program and it has increased the risk of infection through waning immunity during women’s childbearing age life. The study aimed to assess the levels of anti- Bordetella pertussis antibodies in childbearing age women of different ages in Iran. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on a total number of 360 childbearing age women divided into six age groups, with 5-year intervals from 15 to 45 years old, in 2018–2019. Then, the levels of immunoglobulin A (IgA), immunoglobulin M (IgM), and immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibodies against B. pertussis were evaluated using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The IBM SPSS Statistics software (version 16.0) (SPSS Inc., Chicago, IL, USA) was used for data analysis. Results: The mean age of the participants was 30.01 ± 8.35 years (range 14–45 years). All the cases were IgM negative, but two IgA-positive individuals (in the age groups of 14–19 and 30–34 years) were reported. Overall, 239 (66.4%) cases were IgG positive. The mean age of IgG-positive cases was 30.37 ± 8.37 years. The IgG-positive cases were mostly in the age groups of 30–34 and 35–39 years [43 (71.1%)]. The odds of IgG positivity were 1.97. The highest odds of IgG positivity were seen in 30–34 and 35–39 years groups (2.52) and the lowest odds were seen in the 20–24 and 25–29 years groups (1.60). Using the Jonckheere–Terpstra test, the increasing trend of IgG changes in different age groups was not statistically significant (Tπ=5.78, p = 0.09). Conclusion: The infants of women of childbearing age might be prone to pertussis in countries using the wP vaccination schedule. It is suggested to administer a dose of Tdap to women before or during pregnancy to increase the immunity of their infants against this disease during early infancy.

Aim: Bruxism is defined as the involuntary recurrent masticatory muscle activity characterized by gnashing, grinding, clenching of teeth, and/or pushing the mandible. Factors creating its etiology are peripheral (morphological) or central (physiopathological and physiological), and exogenous. Recently, among physiological factors, depression and bruxism were considered to be related. A definitive treatment method does not exist for bruxism; however, botulinum toxin-A (BT-A) application is an up-to-date and effective way of treatment. The present study is aimed to evaluate the levels of depression in bruxism patients treated with BT-A application. Materials and Methods: A total of 25 individuals (23 females and 2 males) who were diagnosed as bruxism patients were included in the study. 25 U of BT-A for each masseter muscle was injected into the patients. Patients were prospectively observed for a possible change in depression levels by using Beck’s Depression Inventory. The inventory was implemented before and six months after the BT-A application. Depression levels before and six months after the injection were compared. A paired t-test was used to compare “before” and “after” treatment values. One-way analysis of variance and post-hoc Tukey tests were used to evaluate the change in Beck’s Depression Inventory scores according to age groups. Results: The mean total score was 7.80 ± 8.10 before the treatment and 7.16 ± 6.52 six months after the treatment. The decrease in the mean score was not statistically significant ( P > .05). Conclusion: In conclusion, despite the decrease in the mean Beck’s Depression Inventory scores, a statistically significant decrease in the depression levels of patients was not observed.

Abstract Background Early diagnosis and treatment of ACS can reduce the risk of complications and death. Delay calling for help can increase morbidity and mortality. It is unclear which age group among patients with acute coronary syndrome tend to delay their call for help. Results Our observational retrospective study showed that men and women in their 50s and 40s respectively tend to delay their call for help from symptoms onset. For the former, the mean time delays (590 ± 71.1 min), whereas for the latter it was (1084 ± 120.1 min). Moreover, these groups tend to have a longer time delay between symptoms onset and arrival at the hospital. Among deaths, we observed that the death rate was proportional to the time delay, which is not unexpected. Next step, we plan to perform a qualitative study in the form of questionnaires to target the individuals with a high risk of CVD within these age groups. Conclusion Middle age group of both genders tend to delay their call for help when they experience symptoms of ACS; moreover, regardless of the age, the longer the delay, the higher the mortality rate. The results of this study gave us a better understanding of our local population and will pave the road for a well-structured teaching programme for them to minimise the time delay for calling for help.

Abstract Background The use of X-ray as a diagnostic tool for complication and anomaly in the neonatal patient has been helpful, but the effect of radiation on newborn stands to increase their cancer risk. This study aims to determine the mean, 50th percentile (quartile 2 (Q2)), and 75th percentile (quartile 3 (Q3)) entrance surface dose (ESD) from anteroposterior (AP) chest X-ray and to compare our findings with other relevant studies. The study used calibrated thermoluminescent dosimeters (TLDs), which was positioned on the central axis of the patient. The encapsulated TLD chips were held to the patients’ body using paper tape. The mean kilovoltage peak (kVp) and milliampere seconds (mAs) used was 56.63(52–60) and 5.7 (5–6.3). The mean background TLD counts were subtracted from the exposed TLD counts and a calibration factor was applied to determine ESD. Results The mean ESDs of the newborn between 1 and 7, 8 and 14, 15 and 21, and 22 and 28 days were 1.09 ± 0.43, 1.15 ± 0.50, 1.19 ± 0.45, and 1.32 ± 0.47 mGy respectively. A one-way ANOVA test shows that there were no differences in the mean doses for the 4 age groups (P = 0.597). The 50th percentile for the 4 age groups was 1.07, 1.26, 1.09, and 1.29 mGy respectively, and 75th percentile were 1.41, 1.55, 1.55, and 1.69 mGy respectively. The mean effective dose (ED) in this study was 0.74 mSv, and the estimated cancer risk was 20.7 × 10−6. Conclusion ESD was primarily affected by the film-focus distance (FFD) and the patient field size. The ESD at 75th percentile and ED in this study was higher compared to other national and international studies. The estimated cancer risk to a newborn was below the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) limit for fatal childhood cancer (2.8 × 10−2Sv−1).
