The aim of this research was to find out the using picture series in teaching writing skill for the fourth semester students of midwifery program in STIKES Bhakti Husada Mulia Madiun. This study was done on May 2020. The subjects were 32 students of the fourth semester students of midwifery program of STIKES Bhakti Husada Mulia Madiun in the academic year 2020/2021. The method used in this research was a qualitative descriptive research design. The techniques for collecting data were observation, interview, and documentation. During the research, the researcher acted as the teacher and observer during the implementation of picture series. The findings of observation show that there is good interaction between lecturer and students. The lecturer gives the task and assignment to make the students understand the material well. The finding of interview shows that by using picture series, the students can have the ideas how to start writing recount text well. They can arrange the picture series to help them in composing the writing. By using picture series the students can improve their writing based on the criteria asked by the lecturers. The criteria of the writing are vocabulary, content, language, mechanic and organization. The finding of documentation shows that the use of picture series in teaching writing recount text make the students interested. Thus, the learning process is supported that the students are better to write from their experiences to compose recount text. Then, the use of picture series is effectively used in helping students improve their performance in writing recount text. The future researcher can conduct the use of picture series in other skill of English such as on speaking skill. It is hoped can be used as the easy media to express the students’ creativity in their speaking. Furthermore, the researcher can do this study by using the other design such as the experimental research design in teaching English writing skill.

The purpose of this research is to report the data analysis about the kinds of students’ learning style which is used by the Indonesian students in their speaking English skill. The research was conducted through qualitative descriptive research method and supported by data questionnaire. This research can be given understanding about three kinds of learning style which is able to use as a unique technique in teaching English speaking skill and the research findings show that English speaking skill can be learned by all various learner regarding with their learning style. Learning style also can be used as a teacher’s guideline to gain the objectives of study effectively, because the teacher can match their classroom strategy and method regard to students’ learning style. Based on the questionnaire data the most suitable learning style in student speaking skill is auditory learner, because auditory learners absorb the information through hearing, while hearing is the most effective way to add vocabulary, pronounce the words and getting the information clearly and effectively.

Teaching English writing skill which involves developing linguistic and communicative competence of learners is considered a challenging task. When teaching writing, therefore, EFL teachers in general and Indonesian teachers in particular encounter many challenges (i.e. difficulties). This study aims to find out Indonesian teachers’ challenges in teaching English writing skill and discuss possible solutions to remove, or at least, minimize, the problems. The data was collected by interviewing 10 English teachers who come from different part of East Java, Indonesia and teach English in either private or public Junior and Senior High Schools. The instrument used was structured interview. The data collected from the interview was, then, analyzed descriptively. The findings show that there are internal and external factors contribute to the challenges that the teachers confront. The internal factors include linguistic competence, native language interference, motivation and reading habits of the learners, while the external ones include the class condition, aids available for teaching writing and the availability of time. The research findings would facilitate the teachers and the concerning authorities to improve the ELT especially in teaching writing.

Brainstorming activity is a main factor that can give effect on students’ writing motivation. Teaching English writing by using brainstorming strategy is really important especially to increase students’ motivation. This research is aimed at investigating the effect of brainstorming and its relation to students’ motivation in English writing for the second semester students of Management Major of STIE Perbanas Surabaya, numbering 25 students in academic year 2018-2019. Classroom Action Research (CAR) method was applied in this research. Researcher could investigate and analyze brainstorming process by using this method. Applying brainstorming strategy, the participants (students) were more motivated in terms of writing, which at this time was English writing with a particular topic. Result of this study revealed that brainstorming strategy could improve students’ English Writing skill and their motivation in writing. They could produce good and effective words, and also interesting answers. Based on the fact, brainstorming strategy is suggested for teaching English Writing. Students’ motivation in writing much higher than without brainstorming strategy. Key Words: Brainstorming, Motivation, English Writing

Guiding is a branch of oral communication. In oral communication, guiding can be included as productive skill. English guiding is one of the academic lessons in the fourth semester. Being a tour guide is a very important job in tourism part. In many cases, the tour guide is a traveller's first impression of a foreign country. In other cases a tour guide may be responsible for teaching tourists about the culture and sites in a city or town. Improving students’ communicative skill is the goal of teaching English guiding, because the student can express themselves and know how to use language well. In the real situation in teaching guide process, lecturer cannot escape from reality. It occurs because there are some problems faced by the lecture and the student. The lecturer cannot make student pay attention; make the students’ lack of creativity in making interactive guiding topics, and engagement in whole teaching learning process. This research applied photovoice as a technique to increase the student’s ability in speaking English guiding. Photovoice is suitable technique in teaching speaking skill in English guiding because it gives student chance to communicate with different context and different social by photo as a learning media. This reviews were taken from Beverly Palibroda (2009) Photovoice implementation and Speaking Assessment from Brown Lavinson (2004). This research was conducted by three cycles such as: pre-test, cycle I and cycle II. In composing this research the writer used qualitative descriptive method by classroom action research (CAR).             The result of this research showed that the mean score in pre-test before implementing Photovoice clearly showed that the ability of the subject under study was relatively “ fairly satisfactory ” in the level of mastery of speaking rubric. There were increasing in cycle I after implementing Photovoice technique. The result of the data analysis of the reflection score in cycle I showed increasing the mean score of 7.11 It was higher than the result of pre-test. In the cycle II, which the treatment was more intensive in order of weakness of the students had been known. The result of the data anaysis of reflection or post-test in cycle II that the mean score was 8.18. The different between mean score in cycle I and II was 1.07. It showed that the student’s speaking guiding ability improved after the researcher applied the photovoice thecnique to the students.

The aim of this research is to describe the Islamic values in the process of teaching English. This research was conducted at SD Labschool FIP UMJ for about 3 months starting from June 2018 until August 2018. This study focuses on English teaching and learning process at 4th graders. The study applied a qualitative descriptive research method which used observation and documents as the instruments in collecting the data. The writers observed both the school and 4th grade class and used the syllabus, lesson plan and English textbook as the documents. The analysis of the data showed that the Islamic values had been being well-built in the area of the school together with the school activities. While in the class observation the writer found that the Islamic values were not being applied yet in the process of teaching and learning English, besides, it was also found that syllabus, lesson plan, and textbook did not insert any Islamic values at all either in the content of the materials or in the teaching and learning activities. Thus this research study concludes that the Islamic values did not fully exist yet in the process of teaching English to the 4th graders of SD Labschool FIP UMJ.

The aim of this study is to find whether Think – Talk – Write Strategy works effectively on improving the tenth grade students’ achievement in writing recount texts and to know the students’ responses after being taught by using Think – Talk – Write Strategy . in order to  achieve the objectives of study, a classroom action research was designed and carried out in this study. The subjects of this study were 32 students of class X- MIA2  OF SMA Santo Yoseph Medan in academic year 2018/2019. Test, observation sheet, and field notes were used as a instruments for collecting data. The results of the study showed significant improvement of the students’ skill in writing. It is proved by the students’ mean score of each test: pre-test was 57,5%, formative test was 67,22% and post-test  was 83,88% . In addition, the, the analysis result of the observation sheet and field notes showed Think – Talk – Write Strategy channge the students’ learning behavior being better than before. They were more enthusiastic during the teaching learning process in each cycle. The analysis result of questionnaire showed that Think – Talk – Write Strategy was useful to most of students to improve their learnig interest in writing recount text. Based on the results of those study instruments, it can be concluded that Think – Talk – Write Strategy as learning strategy gives the improvement to students’ skill in writing recount text. It is recommended for English teacher to apply Think – Talk – Write Strategy in teaching writing skill in order to improve students’ skill in writing expecially recount text.

The background of the study was based on the phenomenon at the seventh graders of the SMP BOPRI Godean. Learning English especially writing skill were still low in mastering vocabulary, sentence structure, and paragraph organizing. The research aimed (1) to analyze the students’ writing by using scaffolding technique; (2) to describe the improvement of the students’ writing skill by using scaffolding technique; and (3) to find out the students’ interests in writing skill by using scaffolding technique. To solve the problem, the researcher conducted Classroom Action Research and applied scaffolding technique in teaching English to improve student’s ability in writing skill. The participants of this research were the 14 students of the seventh graders of SMP BOPKRI Godean. In this study, the researcher conducted a scaffolding technique of teaching writing descriptive text in three cycles by using scaffolding model adapted from Silvia Read. The five steps in scaffolding technique by Silvia Read were inquiry, modeling, shared, collaborative, and independent. The researcherexpected that the students could improve their writing skill by using the scaffolding technique and interested in English writing skill. The result of this study was showed by pre-test and post-test. In pre-test, the students’ average score was 49, whereas in the students’ post-test cycle one, the students’ average score was 64. In the second cycle, the students’ average score was 75.9. Finally, the researcher could conclude that the result of this research showed an improvement of the students’ writing skills by using scaffolding technique.

The objective of this research was to find out whether there was an increase on students’ and teacher’s activity, students’ creativity, and students’ writing skill through the implementation of project based learning (PjBL). The research design was a classroom action research. The subjects were the first graders of class Tata Kecantikan Kulit (TKK) or Skin and Beauty Treatment at Vocational High School State 3 Metro, known as SMKN 3 Metro, in the second semester, academic year 2015/2016. This action research was done by doing: 1) planning; 2) implementation; 3) observation and data collection; and 4) reflection. Meanwhile, the PjBL was done through six steps, i.e.: 1) determining the project; 2) planning the steps of doing the project; 3) scheduling the project implementation; 4) completing project with guide and supervision from the teacher; 5) making report and presenting project result; 6) evaluatiing process and project result. The instruments of this research were students and teacher observation, creativity assesssment, and writing skill assesssment. The findings showed that the students’ and teacher’s activity gradually increased in each cycle. PjBL implementation also seemed to be effective in increasing the students’ creativity and writing skill. It indicated that by applying PjBL, the aspects of students’ and teacher’s activity in learning process, students’ creativity and writing skill could be directly influenced by the treatment.Key words: PjBL, activity, creativity, writing skill

Literacy has become a crucial position in education, especially in Indonesia. It is used as one of ways to develop education through developing the culture of reading, writing, and counting. The study aims to find out benefits and challenges of implementing storytelling in teaching literacy. The study employed a qualitative descriptive research design. The data were obtained from students� interview and observation. The findings found some benefits in implementing teaching program which include using two languages as the medium of interaction, providing suitable learning materials and various media, using of dramatization to show a character�s expression, asking moral value of the story as an evaluation instrument, developing students� literacy ability, arousing students� imagination, enriching students� vocabulary, and developing students� reading awareness and interest. Meanwhile, some challenges found in implementing teaching program are students� proficiency and length of texts. Based on those findings, it is suggested to provide more times to truly explore students� literacy ability and their preference in story.
