Dyslalia is a language disorder that is present in a wide percentage of children. This work proposes an intervention protocol in music therapy to improve attention, memory, and language for children with the dyslalia disorder. A confirmatory mixed-method design composed of two studies was conducted: the first included a quantitative and pre-experimental design with a sample of 20 children aged between 5 and 8 years (Mage=6.45, SD=1.23) diagnosed with dyslalia. The second study used a qualitative confirmatory methodology, where participants’ parents and therapists participated. Wepman’s and the initial Luria pre- and post-tests measurements were applied. The results of the pre-experiment found statistically significant improvements in verbal regulation t(19)=-5.03, p=<.001, d=.76, attention t(19)=-5.05, p=<.001, d=.76, and memory t(19)=-2.88, p=.009, d=.55. In the qualitative phase, narratives were found that affirmed the positive results of the pre-experiment. Moreover, data surrounding the benefits of the music therapy intervention protocol in the improvement of cognitive processes and the relationship with previous literature that found positive results with this type of intervention are discussed.

This paper deals with the analysis of music therapy interventions focused on the development of speech production in individuals with cerebral palsy (CP). The paper summarizes the results of theoretical analysis of the development of communication for persons with CP from the perspective of special education, speech therapy and music therapy intervention. The research methodology was based on qualitative design with a combination of content analysis and interpretive approach to case studies. The aim of the research was to determine the relationship between the level of speech production of people with CP and goals of music therapy intervention, its methods and procedures and musical materials used in music therapy practice. The research sample consisted of 10 individuals with CP and different levels of speech production. Data collection was based on an in-depth case analysis of available data from documents, video and audio recordings, music therapy products and interviews with music therapists. The research results have identified four stages of music therapy intervention (pre-verbal, semantic, phonological and stadium of complex linguistic phenomena). In each stage typical goals, methods and tools were described.

The present study’s aim is to identify whether class participation is a significant predictor of English language achievement among university students and their views concerning class participation and academic achievement. A sequential mixed method design was applied and a total of 2013 university students (813 female 40.3%; 1200 male, 59.7%) participated in the quantitative portion of the study. Course Participation Grade (CPG) criteria and English Proficiency Exam (EPE) held at the end of the academic year by the institution were used as data collection tools. The qualitative data were analysed through content analysis of a focus group interview with a group of seven participants. The findings suggested that the relationship between academic achievement and CPG was positive and significant. Correspondingly, the qualitative data revealed similar results with the quantitative data by showing that the class participation has powerful impact on academic achievement.

ABSTRACT Objectives: to validate the vulnerability markers of dysfunctions in the socioemotional development of infants. Methods: study with a sequential exploratory mixed-method design. The vulnerability markers elaborated in the qualitative phase were analyzed by experts in the quantitative phase using the Delphi technique with a minimum consensus of 70%. Seventeen judges answered the questionnaire in the first round of analysis and 11 answered in the second round. Results: in the first round, two markers did not reach minimum consensus: the presence of instability in family relationships (66%) and delinquency and/or drug abuse by parents/caregivers (65%). In the second round, all markers were validated, with more than 90% agreement in most of the attributes, and reached the minimum consensus of 73%. Conclusion: the eight vulnerability markers reached the minimum consensus for validation, and a relevant instrument for infant care can be developed after assessing the reliability and clinically validating these markers.

The study sheds light on how the TV station executives balance the entertainment needs of its audience and the producers' expectations within a changing digital broadcast environment. The study is anchored on uses, gratification, and the encoding and decoding theories. The research employs a mixed-method design approach by using survey questionnaires (415), FGDs and in-depth interviews with 5 TV station executives in Kenya and serial drama fiction producers’. The results indicate that the station executive takes centre stage to fulfil the urban audience needs and the producers’ needs respectively. The station executives’ contextualize the viewers and the serial drama producers as ‘profit vessels’ and any decision made towards them should culminate in economic benefit to the station. The study recommends bridging the relationship between the station executives and the serial drama producers, making the former play an advisory and consulting role in the productions.

Over the last few decades, social networking sites (SNS) have evolved as an effective medium of communication for the world. They are instrumental in connecting people across time and space with just a click. However, the darker side of SNS has resulted in a deteriorated human connection between individuals in real life. The current study is an attempt to examine the compulsive usage of SNS in detail. It utilizes a sequential mixed method design to examine the negative outcome of compulsive SNS usage and the effect of mindfulness in overcoming them. Findings of the study suggest that compulsive usage mediates the relationship between mindfulness and exhaustion; further, this relationship is moderated by extroversion personality traits.

Abstract The present study aimed to 1) investigate the effect of self-regulated learning on students’ mathematical problem-solving ability; 2) describe the cognitive processes carried out by students with low and high self-regulation and high problem-solving ability. This study employed an explanatory mixed-method design. Nineteen students at a private high school, in Makassar, Indonesia, were selected, in order to complete the questionnaire, mathematical problem-solving ability test. Of the 19 students, two were selected as research subjects representing problem-solving ability. The quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and inferential statistics, while the qualitative data analysis had to go through the following stages including, reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The results showed that 1) self-regulated learning had no effect on students’ mathematical ability; 2) the cognitive processes carried out by students with high self-regulation and high problem-solving ability included high literacy ability, high metacognitive awareness, being proactive yet inflexible; 3) the cognitive processes carried out by students with low self-regulation and high problem-solving ability included low literacy ability but showing more flexible attitudes. From this study, it can be concluded that problem-solving ability is not influenced by self-regulated learning, but by other factors such as the environment, cognitive ability and cognitive preparedness. Keywords: Problem-solving ability; self-regulated learning. Abstract Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk 1) menginvestigasi pengaruh self-regulated learning terhadap kemampuan pemecahan masalah matematis siswa; 2) mendeskripsikan proses kognitif yang dilakukan siswa dengan self-regulation rendah dan tinggi dan kemampuan pemecahan masalah tinggi. Penelitian ini menggunakan explanatory mixed-method design. Sembilan belas siswa sekolah menengah swasta, di Makassar, Indonesia, dipilih untuk mengisi angket tes kemampuan pemecahan masalah matematika. Dari 19 siswa tersebut, dipilih dua orang sebagai subjek penelitian yang mewakili kemampuan pemecahan masalah. Data kuantitatif dianalisis menggunakan statistik deskriptif dan statistik inferensial, sedangkan analisis data kualitatif melalui tahapan yaitu, reduksi data, menampilkan data, penarikan Kesimpulan. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa 1) self-regulated learning tidak berpengaruh terhadap kemampuan matematika siswa; 2) proses kognitif yang dilakukan siswa dengan self-regulated learning tinggi dan kemampuan pemecahan masalah tinggi meliputi kemampuan literasi tinggi, kesadaran metakognitif tinggi, proaktif namun tidak fleksibel; 3) Proses kognitif yang dilakukan siswa dengan self-regulated learning rendah dan kemampuan pemecahan masalah tinggi meliputi kemampuan literasi rendah tetapi menunjukkan sikap lebih fleksibel. Dari penelitian ini dapat disimpulkan bahwa kemampuan pemecahan masalah tidak dipengaruhi oleh self-regulated learning, melainkan oleh faktor lain seperti lingkungan, kemampuan kognitif, dan kesiapan kognitif. Keywords: Kemampuan pemecahan masalah, self-regulated learning.

This study was concerned with the effect of think-aloud method on the translation process. The aim of this study was to examine differences between translators in the implementation of Newmark’s strategies in translating general texts from English into Persian. Four students (three females and one male) majoring in Translation Studies participated in this study. The researcher used a mixed-method design. In the qualitative phase of the study, the data were collected through the think-aloud protocol, translation task, and cassette recorders. The results suggested that there was no significant difference between translators in the implementation of Newmark strategies with regard to translation tasks. During the quantitative phase of the study, the researcher examined the difference between the translators in implementing translation strategies while translating general texts from English into Persian. In this phase of the study, the data were analyzed using SPSS 19 performing Chi-square. The results of this phase proposed that there was statistically no significant difference between the four translators with regard to most of the translation strategies.

This study evaluates the effectiveness of visual block programming-based instruction and its possibilities in the training of future teachers. In particular, the application Scratch, a visual programming environment, was employed to introduce pre-service teachers to programming. The study followed a mixed-method design with a sample of 79 pre-service teachers. A quantitative approach was used to evaluate the gains in the participants’ knowledge of computational concepts and attitudes towards Scratch as a pedagogic tool. A qualitative analysis aimed at evaluating the participants’ knowledge concerning programming applications, and their perception about possible difficulties in the implementation of programming in educational contexts. Positive results were obtained for programming in the classroom, with significant improvements in innovation, collaboration, active learning, motivation, and fun for the students. After the experiment, the subjects highlighted Scratch as a fundamental block programming tool and the need for teacher training in this field. The need to improve the implementation of visual block programming in Education Degree curricula is supported.

The study focused on elements discussed during pre-marital counselling and how those elements mediate on the sustainability of marriages in Greater Accra Region. Concurrent triangulation mixed method design was chosen for the study. For the quantitative phase 100 marriage people were randomly selected from 10 churches. At the qualitative phase 4 head pastors were conveniently selected from the 10 churches. Mean and standard deviation was used to analysed the questionnaire for the quantitative phase while the semi-structured interview scheduled was thematically analysed to explain issues as they emerged in the study. The study showed conflict resolution, communication, adjusting to individual difference, sex and romance, family lifecycles in marriage and separation from past-memories and families were some elements discussed during pre-marital counselling to help sustain the marriages. Again, respondents were of the view that pre-marital counselling is vital for the sustainability of marriages and should be made compulsory for new couples. Lastly, it was revealed the philosophy of pre-marital counselling is not only being aware of potential land mines in their relationship, but to equip married people to learn the skills necessary to successfully deal with challenges throughout their marriage which help in the sustainability. Therefore, it was recommended that the churches should employ professional counsellors who understand the principle of marriage counselling to perform the act of counselling and follow-up service should be done to check if the elements discussed during pre-marital counselling are being put into practice.
