The past twenty years are the time of fundamental changes in Polish economy. It transformed from centrally planned economy to free market one. This concerns almost all sectors also the healthcare one, where the changes have become more dynamic within the last decade. The main aims of the sector reform were to commercialize public entities and to increase the role of private healthcare providers. Presently, both of the objectives are almost fulfilled and because of that competition has increased. This requires implementation of modern methods of management, which are in fact concentrated on intangible resources, such as human resources rather than tangible ones. Considering the challenges that are faced by healthcare providers the paper is dedicated to performance management regarded as the strategic and inseparable element of the human resources management system. The aim of the paper is to diagnose the condition of the PM in the healthcare providers and when applicable propose a set of improvements.

Abstract Background: Self-care is recognized as important behaviour in chronic diseases such as heart failure (HF). The cultural background of patients with HF is one of the factors that can be considered to affect their adherence to self-care. The cultural background of the health care providers might also influence their view on self-care behaviour and the education they provide. The aim of this study was to describe health care providers' perceptions of the role of culture in self-care and how those perceptions shape their experiences and their practices. Methods: A qualitative study was performed in Israel, a country with a culturally diverse population. Data was collected using semi-structured interviews with 12 healthcare providers from different cultural backgrounds, selected by purposeful sampling, from two hospitals in Israel. Interviews were audio recorded and transcribed verbatim. Data was analysed using content analysis. Results: Healthcare providers experienced cultural background influenced their patients’ self-care behaviour. Perceived cultural-specific barriers to self-care such as: dietary traditions interfering with the recommended HF diet, willingness to undertake self-care and beliefs conflicting with medical treatment were identified. Healthcare providers described that they adapted their patient education and care based on the cultural background of the patients. Shared cultural background, awareness and knowledge of differences were described as positively influencing self-care education, while cultural differences could complicate this process. These findings are encapsulated within four categories regarding perceptions of health care providers: ‘Culture permeates self-care behaviours’, ‘Culture influence the way care is provided’, ‘Mutual cultural background impacts the mindset to address self-care’ and ‘Culture is only a small piece of the puzzle...’Conclusions: Cultural-specific barriers for self-care were perceived by health care providers and they identified that their own cultural background shapes their experiences and their practices.

The polysemantic term legal nature has been actively and for a long time used in Russian legal science in terms of research of almost all legal phenomena. Its usage by jurisprudence traces back to the writings of pre-revolutionary national scholars, expands in scientific works of legal scholars of the Soviet period, and amounts to a truly tremendous scale in present-day legal papers. Seemingly, such a huge demand for the term and (correspondingly) for the concept denoted by it should have led to a plenty of specific studies and certainty in interpretation of the term. However, this did not happen and understanding of the legal phenomena nature is rather a result of intuitive perception than that of logical thinking. Those rare cases, in which legal scholars try to define the term nature as applied to the legal phenomena, only intensify its uncertainty by deepening its polysemy. The article makes an attempt in the article to delimit the term nature and the competitive term essence, as well as substantiates a thesis of the methodological role of the notion nature for the legal phenomena cognition.

Pharmacies are natural first port of call healthcare providers in society who connect the gap between doctors and patients for optimal and rational use of the medicines although the public perception on pharmacists as a healthcare professional is ambiguous. There is a great need to generate awareness in the public as well as other health care professionals about the roles and responsibilities of pharmacists in the healthcare system. The objectives of this study were to assess the approval of general public on the role of pharmacist in health care and to create awareness by educating using pamphlets. A total of 450 individuals were approached for the study, where 400 participated and 50 showed no interest. A validated Pre-awareness assessment questionnaire containing 15 questions and a set of five post education awareness assessment questions were prepared to assess the improvement in awareness level after pamphlet education. The study indicated that most of the respondents had poor awareness about the role of pharmacist to healthcare. Education levels of respondents were significantly associated with awareness levels of participants. The approval level was found to be average. The awareness level improved after creating awareness by educating via pamphlet.

Background/Objective: Over the past decade, many scientific articles have focused on the importance of person-centred care (or person centredness) in the health care sector. In practice, however, person centredness is difficult to operationalise. Thus, the role of “person-centredness coach” was created in a Swedish hospital to provide information, education, and reflection on person centredness. The aim was to describe this new role of a person-centeredness coach, and how the coaches experienced the development of a person-centred working method. Methods: Qualitative semi-structured individual interviews were conducted with nine nursing staff. The data were analysed using inductive content analysis. Results: The analysis resulted in three categories with seven subcategories: an eye opener (with the subcategories of a welcome change and person centredness throughout the organisation); an obstacle with potential (with the subcategories of theoretical vs. practical development of person centredness, difficulties in developing person centredness and proposals for promoting patient participation); and a challenging role (with the subcategories of necessary but a role that takes a long time to develop and the importance of favourable conditions). Conclusions: The person-centredness coaches believed that the person-centred approach was important and that it should be the foundation of all care work within health care but, despite this, had difficulty in integrating person centredness into their practice. The person-centredness coaches found the coach training rewarding. They perceived that, from a learning perspective and through the lens of work-integrated learning, the results could be related to creating praxis, which may be seen as a development area for further research in operationalising person centredness.

Physicians’ work challenges them to learn and grow from their experiences with patients. Male obstetrician-gynecologists are uniquely blessed and challenged by their experiences in women’s health care. The following is a reflection by one male obstetrician-gynecologist who considers the role of Saint Joseph in the holy family in contemplating his own role in providing women’s health care. Summary: One hundred twenty-five men who underwent therapy trying to change sexual orientation from homosexual to heterosexual were asked about negative and positive experiences. About two-thirds recorded changes of varying extent. There was also much decrease in suicidality, depression, and substance abuse, and increases in social functioning and self-esteem. Almost all harmful effects were none to slight and comparable to therapies for other unwelcome conditions.

The article pertains the main problems faced by manufacturers and consumers of paid medical services. The increase in the volume of paid medical care prevails in the fields of dentistry, diagnostics and cosmetology. Of course, the expansion of voluntary medical insurance in almost all areas of medicine, further digitalization and gradual development of commercial outpatient care will be promising areas in the domestic health care. After all, currently every fourth outpatient medical organization is private owned. In this regard, taking into account the foreign and domestic experience of modernization of the medical services market, the paper comprehensively analyzes the trends in the development of commercial medicine within the legal, organizational and socio-economic regulation of the health care industry. Marketing tools to optimize the system of paid services are presented. The key role of mechanisms of public-private interaction in health care management is proved. Integrative approaches to the problems of introduction and development of paid medical services, considered in this study, will allow to systematize and to adjust the extra-budgetary activities of medical organizations while simultaneously increasing the availability and quality of medical care in Russia.
