scholarly journals The Role of Millennial Tourists in Promoting Responsible Tourism: A Case in Singapore

The tourism industry has emerged as one of the main contributors of gross domestic product (GDP) in many countries, including Singapore. Though the direct benefits associated with the growth of tourism industry is promising, the social-culturally and environmental problems that arisen simultaneously must not be overlooked. This paper presents five hypotheses for understanding the inter-relationship between millennial tourists’ evaluation on tourism experience, their attitude towards the tourism experience, attitude towards the destination as well as their responsible tourism intention by using the consumption value theory, the halo effects and the theory of planned behavior as guiding frameworks. The paper proposes that the perceived value of millennial tourists is made up of six distinctive dimensions, which will have a positive effect on their attitude towards the tourism experience. Their positive attitude arisen from tourism experience will, then, affect their attitude towards the destination and thus their intention to engage in responsible tourism behavior. This paper offers opportunities to refine concepts and build on existing theories.

The article discusses the role of youth groups in the socio-cultural differentiation of youth in the field of tourism and the importance of the social role of youth in tourism. The emergence of youth tourism industry, social and cultural differences in travel motivation of young people makes it important the analysis of youth tourism. Tourism is an indicator of the differences between social stratums of youth, therefore important to talk about the social and cultural differentiation of young people in tourism and analysis of the main approaches to the essence of differentiation in tourism. The authors consider the main theoretical component of the need to use the concept "socio-cultural differentiation" and its application in tourism concerning the youth. Needs of young people with similar socio-cultural characteristics and interests are the basis of the study of the socio-cultural aspects of the differentiation of youth in tourism. Within this framework, the concept of "group" is considered as collection of people based on common values, interests, standards, constant interaction, goals, interests, and limited with criteria of membership. Socio-cultural differentiation of youth is characterized by the cultural component of this process. As a result of the foregoing, it is necessary to study the basic aspects of group relations and the role of youth in the development of society. The main elements, typical for group relations of youth in tourism, are based on leisure interests. Development of a scientific approach to solving the problems of youth, as well as availability of social and public policy in tourism are the important elements of the issue of social and cultural differentiation. In such a case, youth is viewed through the prism of group relationships based primarily on common interests.

AbstractThe first objective of this study was to investigate whether police violence is more tolerated when the victim is a member of a social minority (e.g., Moroccan immigrants and Romanian Gypsies in Spain) than when the victim is a member of the social majority (e.g., Spaniards). The second objective was to use Schwartz value theory to examine the moderating role of values on attitudes towards tolerance of police violence. The participants were 207 sociology and social work students from a public university in Madrid. Overall, in this study, police violence was more accepted when the victim was a member of a social minority; F(2, 206) = 77.91, p = .001, ηp2 = 0.433, and in general, values moderated this acceptance. Thus, greater adherence to the conservation and self-promotion values subsystems would strengthen support for police violence towards a social minority member. On the other hand, greater adherence to the openness to change and self-transcendence subsystems diminish this support.

With the onset of 2015, globalization is perhaps one of the most dynamic issues concerning the social sciences. It is critical to map all fields of the human/cultural experience that are susceptible to manifestations of globalization in the growing international tourism industry. In this study I have focused on the evolution of the Peruvian Andean highlands’ massive tourist industry, including a specific analysis on the Paz Y Luz Healing Centre, in order to address spiritual tourism and its appropriation and commodification processes. In my exploration of Andean mysticism and the concept’s effect on local cultural heritage, I have found it essential to consult Foucauldian understandings of the gaze, as well as several other perspectives on the role of ritual elements in the construction of spiritual realities. Subsequently I have been led to perhaps a predictable conclusion: spiritual tourism is a living relic of colonialism. It dilutes the cultural and spiritual heritage of peoples like the Q’ero for consumption by tourists, who use the gaze and its created ‘other’ to validate their own construction of spiritual realities.

The chapter aims to provide an overview of the role of social media for knowledge management in tourism industry. Respect than traditional tools, the social media penetration within such industry is growing thanks to opportunity for travelers and travel professionals to access critical tourism knowledge everywhere and every time. Prior research has mainly focused on how social media are changing the tourism industry, while it is lacking enough the contribution of these technologies to managing touristic knowledge. This chapter seeks to shed light on how social media support knowledge management, with particular attention to knowledge creation, sharing, and preservation processes, in tourism industry. In particular, while knowledge creation and sharing process have attracted the attention of scholars, knowledge preservation via social media seems be still in its infancy stage.

Despite its dominant positive elements and phenomena, tourism (especially mass tourism) is increasingly experiencing the opposite side of the coin i.e. contradictory and negative elements, both in theory and in practice. In this work, we give a detailed and systematic report on all the positive, as well as the negative and unfavourable social and economic functions of tourism. Light is shed on both the cause and effect relation in tourism and the negative, contradictory and conflicting elements and manifestations in tourism. To this end, we have made a theoretical classification (based on foreign and domestic literature, as well as our own contributions) of all conflicting and negative functions and phenomena through 3 contingent spheres. These are: (1) the social and cultural domain, (2) the ecological domain and (3) the economic and organisational domain. By applying a social and economic method o f research, the author lists and corroborates the interdependence, consistancy and growing potentiality of contradicting, conflicting and crisis processes which tourism, in its present level of development, is forced to deal with. In conclusion to our research, we have proposed possible, favourable solutions which could secure the survival and long-term outlook of the tourism industry. These are: the role of the human factor, the need to enrichen and redesign mass tourism and above all, the importance of the new orientation towards SELECTIVE tourism or tourism of continuous development.

Purpose –Authors argue that there is an interesting phenomena of visitors’ participation in Memorable Tourism Experience (MTE) specially in festival. It seems that the festival can significantly give more opportunity for the visitors to participate in MTE. Pine and Gilmore (1998) argued that participation enriches the visitors’ experience. Moreover, Barnes et al. (2016) suggested that long term remembered experiences have the strongest impact on revisit intentions. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to analyze the role of participation in creating memorable tourism experience in Cap Go Meh festival and Linggarjati festival in order to create loyal visitor.Design/methodology/approach – The methodology started with instrument development. The items were developed by referring the works of Crompton and McKay’s (1997). They proposed six dimension of visitors’ motives to visit festival. Apart from that, we did some observation and interviews both practitioners and academicians to enrich the instrument. The refining process commenced with the pilot test to test of the items. This procedure was to ensure the validity and reliability of the questionnaire. Pilot test conducted on 30 marketing undergraduate students at Universitas Prasetiya Mulya, Indonesia. Then, authors conducted a review of the result. The word sequence was changed as a result of the input of the respondents on the pilot test of the initial questionnaire. The self-complete questionnaire was designed for both of Cap Go Meh and Linggarjati festival. Authors used a questionnaire instrument consisting of 42 questions on 5-point Likert-type scales of one to five range (1 = strongly disagree up to 5= strongly agree). Respondents were asked to rate their level of agreement/disagreement at that range. Data were gained by giving a questionnaire to festival visitor after the events.Conceptual development – Authors argue, from the previous studies, that there is still the gap towards the role of participation in memorable tourism experience remain. Authors proposed a conceptual framework that represents the relationships between motives, experience, memory vividness, and loyalty. To test the model, data were collected from direct surveys completed by 207 attendees of Cap Go Meh festival and 160 visitors of Linggarjati festival. This study employed Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) consist of analysing measurement model using Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) and analysing structural model using regression analysis.Findings – Visitors have different motives to attend and take a part in festival. In Cap Go Meh festival, group socializationhas a positive effect on participation, which lead to immersion, then influences vivid memory and loyalty. While in Linggarjati festival, novelty has a positive effect on participation, which lead to immersion, then influences vivid memory and loyalty.Practical implications – Findings suggested that the importance of engagement toward visitor’s experience (participation and immersion) in festival in order to create vivid memory and loyalty. The present findings would be particular interest to Linggarjati and Cap Go Meh festival as a cultural festival. Event manager should notice how important of the role of participation to fill their motive’s attending to immerse in festival and to create vivid memory and loyalty. Another practical implication of our study is the benefit of event manager to understand the characteristic of each visitor towards festival. Cap Go Meh festival can be higher in group socialization. Event manager should facilitate visitors to participate as a group on God Statue parade. Whereas in Linggarjati festival, visitors gain the novelty of historical site and city history merge with the stage of angklung -traditional music instrument- colossal.Originality/value – The study is a pioneer in analysing the role of participation in Memorable Tourism Experience.
