The elderly not only face the problem of physical changes but also undergo emotional, psychological and social changes. Some individuals cope with these changes effectively but others will experience extreme frustration and mental agony. The family members should understand the psychosocial changes and stresses experienced by the elderly and fosters necessary care and concern to them. The biological age and chronological age are closely related but will not correlate. As the age advances, the health problems tend to increase with age and these problems also depend on economic condition and family and social support system. The main objective of this investigation is to study the plight of the elderly women in the institutional settings with the following broad objectives: To make a study of personal profile of the respondents; To understand the living arrangements of the elderly women in the institutions; To assess the extent of family relationship as well as the psychological condition of the respondents; To know and understand the social status of the elderly women in the institutions; and to study the coping patterns of elderly women. Total 80 respondents were interviewed from four care homes in the Udupi District through simple random sampling method. The study reveals that majority of the respondents are from rural area and economically poor status. They suffer from depression since they lack psychological and emotional support. They express their emotions by getting short tempered and irritable. Some try to cope up with indulging themselves more with religious activities like prayer and meditation. The healthy interaction in an institution will help in getting integration and healthy bond with other inmates. The study concludes by saying the most important aspect in every human being life is to have a financial plan for future at the middle age itself.

The quality of life is influenced by internal factors such as self-quality, as well as external factors such as family support and religious activities. Objective: The objective of this research was to identify differences in the level of happiness of elderly muslims based on several factors: Work, health, salary, Islamic study, and marriage. Methods: Three hundred and ten elderly muslims (133 male, 177 female) participated in this study. Respondents were selected by simple random sampling of the elderly muslim population in seven districts in Central Java province, Indonesia. Results: The results showed 1) there was a correlation between family support and participation in religious activities and the happiness of elderly Muslims, 2) a healthy elderly person has a higher level of happiness than a sick elderly person; elderly who partake in Islamic studies one to two times a week have higher happiness than the elderly who do not; the retired elderly have the highest happiness compared to the elderly who still work and the elderly who do not (the lowest level of happiness), and there was no difference in the level of happiness in terms of salary and marriage. Conclusion: Family support and participation in religious activities are the main predictors of subjective well-being in the muslim elderly. Decreasing and changing physical conditions, the change in mental status as depression that often ignored, and diseases that often appear like hypertension are commonly found in the elderly, and it is a health problem that requires special attention because it will affect all aspects of life in the elderly. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between sex and duration of illness with the level of depression in the elderly with hypertension. The method used is descriptive quantitative with cross sectional approach. The study population was all elderly with hypertension at the Penumping Public Health Center with a sample of 54 people taken by accidental sampling. Data was collected using a research instrument in the form of a Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS) questionnaire and analyzed using a correlative test that is a Kendall tau analysis. Correlative test results between sex and depression level showed a correlation value of 0.294 with p-value (p) = 0.028, which means there is a significant relationship between sex and depression level. Correlative test between the duration of hypertension and the level of depression showed a correlation value of 0.382 with p-value (p) = 0.004, which means there is a significant relationship between the duration of hypertension and the level of depression. Discussion : The occurrence of the degeneration process in the elderly can cause physical changes and changes in the social environment such as a low economy, loss of family members, inability to fill roles in society and risk of disease. Female sex is the highest proportion and high life expectancy compared to men, so hypertension sufferers mostly occur in elderly women. Increasing the number of elderly people needs to be followed by programs that can maintain the quality of life of the elderly. The ratio of elderly dependence on the productive population is increasing. For that, we need a program so that physical and social changes in the elderly do not reduce the independence of the elderly. Physical changes in the form of cognitive disorders namely decreased brain function so that activities related to the ability of attention, concentration, calculation, decision making, reasoning, and abstract thinking. Social changes in the form of job loss, loneliness, risk of disease, can be a trigger for depressive disorders in the elderly. The purpose of this activity is for all parties to have a role in the early detection of cognitive disorders and depression as well as the elderly who have symptoms can be treated early

Despite the disadvantages they face, women in western nations have coped very successfully with the problems of aging during the past century and, with limited material resources, have responded positively to great social and personal changes. Although women make up the majority of the elderly population, these achievements have received little attention. As we face the continued aging of the population and its attendant massive social changes in a setting of increasingly scarce resources, it is essential that all aspects of female aging be studied more closely. They may well provide us with the insights necessary to clarify our vision of the past and future and provide us with appropriate models for survival in a less-than-ideal world.

The aging process affects the skeletal muscle structure and disability of the musculoskeletal system which resulted in limited and slowed motion. One characteristic of the aging process is a decrease in muscle strength. Muscle strength affects almost all daily activity. Decreased muscle strength can lead to limitations in daily activities, independence and quality of life. This study aims to determine the relationship between handgrip muscles’ strength and level of functional ability among elderly women in Tista, Kerambitan Tabanan. To assess the strength of the relationship and assess the direction of the relationship between the variables. The research design was used cross sectional study with Simple Random Sampling and got 73 samples. The strength of handgrip muscles was measured using Hand-grip dynamometer, while the functional independence level was assessed by Intermediate Activity Daily Living (IADL) questionnaire interview. Result of research by using Spearman correlation test got value P = 0,000 (P <0,05) and Coefficient correlation value equal to 0,489 indicate that there is a significant correlation between handgrip muscles’ strength with functional ability independence level, this relation is positive and medium. In conculsion that handgrip muscles’s strength and level of  functional ability are positively correlated and medium. The stronger the muscle strength of the handgrip, the higher the level of functional ability independence and vice versa. Therefore, handgrip muscle’s strength can be used in identifying disabilities in the elderly. Keywords: elderly, handgrip muscles’ strength, functional capabilities, disability.

Fifty-three elderly men and 51 elderly women participated in a study of the relationship between suicidal ideation and selected personal, stress, and social support variables. A multifactor theory formed the basis for the selection of variables, which included age, gender, marital status, living arrangements, perceived religiousness, alcohol use, self-esteem, depression, negative stress, satisfaction with health, social isolation, and satisfaction with social support. Bivariate correlation analyses found suicidal ideation to be related to infrequent alcohol consumption, high depression, high social isolation, and dissatisfaction with health and social support. Results of a multiple regression analysis identified (dis)satisfaction with social support, gender, living arrangements, and (in)frequency of alcohol use as significant predictors.

Living arrangements in the twilight of life is a matter of primary concern for elderly widowed women. In view of this, an attempt is made to examine the effect of background characteristics on the living arrangements of the widowed elderly women making use of the data collected from 330 elderly widowed women from Coimbatore city, Tamil Nadu with frequency and cross-tabular analyses as well as chi-square test of significance. The study found that slightly less than three-tenths of widowed women are „old-old‟ (75+ years). On the other hand, three-fifths of elderly belonged to most backward / backward caste and majority (63%) of them illiterates. About two-fifths (42%) of the elderly widowed women are living with married son. The differentials of elderly living alone vs with children are mostly in expected direction and highly significant (p<0.001) with an increase in the number of earning members in the family, number of children living in the same area / city as well as those who belonged to the households of high standard of living. On the other hand, the percentage of widowed elderly who live alone has shown a clear increasing pattern with an increase in occupational status and instrumental activities of daily living scale. Further, it is noticed that the elderly who are living alone is higher among those who are feeling „unhealthy‟ as compared to those elderly widowed women as „healthy‟. All these percentagedifferentials are also turned out as significant at different levels of extent (p<0.001 or p<0.05).Based on these findings a few policy implications have been postulated.
