ABSTRACT Pulp tissue from freshly extracted, intact vital premolars was removed in toto and was cut to get an approximate weight of 8.2 mg for each sample. Eighty samples thus obtained were divided into 4 groups of 20 samples each according to the irrigating solution used (5.25% NaOCl, 17% EDTA, BioPure MTAD and Distilled water (control group). Pulp tissue of specified equal weight (8.2 mg) was placed into each test tube of all groups carrying irrigants of measured volume (5ml each) at 37°C according to their specified subgroups time interval i.e. 10 min, 15 min, 20 min and 30 min respectively. The solution from each sample test tube was filtered and was left for overnight drying. The residual weight was calculated by filtration method. Results showed that the maximum amount of pulp was dissolved by 5.25% NaOCl at all time intervals. MTAD and 17% EDTA showed almost similar dissolution at all the time intervals.

ABSTRACT Aim To investigate the effect of variation in temperature and time intervals on the flexural strength of two brands of autopolymerizing resins polymerized at constant pressure. Materials and methods Two autopolymerizing resins RR Cold Cure resin (DPI) and RR-Rapid Repair Powder (Dentsply) were used. A total of 20 samples were fabricated for each group. Samples were polymerized at temperature ranges of 40°, 50°, 60°, and 70°C and at time intervals of 5, 10, and 15 minutes in the customized curing pot, maintaining pressure of 30 psi. Results Flexural strength was verified using universal testing machine using three-point bending test and was then compared with all samples and also with the samples cured in open air (control group). The samples cured at higher temperature, i.e., 60° and 70°C, have shown increased strength than those at 40° and 50°C as well as control group. Time interval of 10 minutes is considered sufficient to increase the strength of the resin, as per the results of this study. Conclusion The samples cured under varied condition of time and temperature but under constant pressure showed increased strength than those cured in open air. Clinical significance The effect of pressure and temperature has been demonstrated, which could be utilized for enhancing the durability of the prosthesis fabricated from autopolymerized resins. SUMMARY Uptake of tritiated lysine vasopressin ([3H]LVP) was studied in halved neural lobes of rats (which had been given either tap water (control group) or 2% (w/v) NaCl solution as drinking water for 4 days) as well as in slices of pig neural lobe. Uptake of radioactivity into the neural lobes was shown but analysis of the extracts of incubated lobes of both species by ion exchange chromatography showed that very little of it remained in the tissue as hormone. In addition, some radioactivity was associated with trichloroacetic acid-insoluble proteins. After 90 min of incubation, and after correction for the breakdown, the uptake of unchanged [3H]LVP, expressed as a tissue: medium ratio, was 0·14 ± 0·04 and 0·09 ± 0·03 (mean ± s.e.m.) for the saline-treated and control rats respectively, while the tissue: medium ratios for the breakdown product(s) were 6·47 ± 0·45 and 5·50 ± 0·36. The results suggest uptake of [3H]LVP into the cell with almost complete intracellular breakdown of the hormone.

Proposition: The purpose of this study was to evaluate in vitro the color changes of esthetic orthodontic elastomeric ligatures of different shades when exposed to four food colorings commonly found in the diet of patients. Materials and Methods: The sample consisted of esthetic orthodontic elastomeric ligatures in the colors pearl, pearl blue, pearl white and colorless, which were immersed for 72 hours in five different solutions: distilled water (control group), coffee, tea, Coca-Cola ® and wine. The color changes of the esthetic orthodontic elastomeric ligatures were measured with the aid of a spectrophotometer, at T1 - as provided by the manufacturer; and T2 - after colorings process. Results: The results indicated that the esthetic orthodontic elastomeric ligatures of all initial hues are susceptible to pigmentation. Among the evaluated colors, all changed the finished look and the color of the samples tested. In ascending order, the color of the samples was as follows: distilled water, Coca-Cola®, black tea, wine and coffee. Conclusion: The substances that have a greater potential for pigmentation in esthetic orthodontic elastomeric ligatures were black tea, wine and coffee, respectively. All shades of esthetic orthodontic elastomeric ligatures are susceptible to color change.

AbstractHemolytic specimens are among the most challenging preanalytical issues in laboratory diagnostics. The type of blood collection tube in use is claimed to influence in vitro hemolysis. We aimed to examine this hypothesis and estimate the respective financial impact, evaluating routine blood samples from the past 4 years.A total of 47,820 hemolysis index (HI) values from five different time intervals (IV1–IV5) were compared against each other, representing the following tubes: IV1-Sarstedt Monovette; IV2-8 mL/16×100 mm Greiner BioOne (GBO) Vacuette; IV3/IV4-5 mL/16×100 mm GBO Vacuette; IV5-4.5 mL/13×75 mm GBO Vacuette. For estimation of the economic impact, material, personnel and analytical costs were calculated.HI mean values in time interval IV2 were significantly higher than in all other intervals, while mean values amongst all other intervals were comparable. The number of moderately and severely hemolyzed samples increased with incrementing vacuum. Overall comparable costs between intervals IV1 and IV5 were €11,370, €14,045, €12,710, €11,213 and €8138 per 10,000 samples, respectively.Aspiration tubes and low vacuum tubes show comparable hemolysis rates. Increasing vacuum levels are associated with higher hemolysis rates. By decreasing in vitro hemolysis, financial savings up to €5907 per 10,000 samples could be gained.

The removal of the filling material during the Endodontic retreatment is essential, so a better action of solvents on the gutta-percha is desired. Objective: To evaluate in vitro the gutta-percha dissolution ability of different solvents. Material and methods: Four solvents (xylol, eucalyptol, citrol, and orange oil) were applied on gutta-percha points, which had been later submitted to the weight loss analysis at 2, 5, and 10 minutes. For each solvent, 30 size #60 main cones were used, divided into three groups. Distilled water was used as control group. The statistical test applied was Kruskal-Wallis. Results: No statistically significant difference occurred among the solvents at 2 minutes (p > 0.05); however, during this period, citrol had the best performance. In longer time intervals, the xylol showed differences compared to eucalyptol at 5 minutes and to eucalyptol and citrol at 10 minutes (p < 0.05). The worst results were found for eucalyptol. Conclusion: This xylol was the solvent with improved ability to dissolve the gutta-percha points, with better results at longer time periods.

ABSTRACT Aim To evaluate surface hardness and dimensional accuracy of type IV dental stone after incorporation of disinfectants. Materials and methods A total of 100 specimens, 50 (40 mm⨯ 10 mm) disk shaped and 50 frustum cone shaped, were fab- ricated from type IV dental stone after incorporation of various disinfectants, namely glutaraldehyde (2%), iodophor (1.76%), chlorhexidine (2%), and sodium hypochlorite (1%), for evaluation of surface hardness and dimensional accuracy. Surface hardness was tested after 1- and 24-hour time interval using Rockwell hard- ness testing machine. Dimensional accuracy was measured using traveling microscope. Data obtained were compiled and analyzed statistically by using analysis of variance and post hoc test. Results Results showed significant decrease in surface hard- ness of samples incorporated with disinfectants at 1 hour as compared with control (distilled water). Surface hardness of all the samples increased with time and was almost equal to control group at 24-hour interval, with iodophor showing the maximum value in comparison with the other disinfectants used. When dimensional accuracy of all the groups was compared, iodophor and sodium hypochlorite were found to cause negative alterations. Conclusion Within the limitations of this in vitro study, it was concluded that incorporation of disinfectants in die stone during mixing did not affect the hardness value at 24-hour interval. Dimensional accuracy was altered by iodophor and sodium hypochlorite, but remained unaffected by chlorhexidine and glutaraldehyde. How to cite this article Bakshi A, Dang R. In this study, using electrolytic reducing ionic water (S-100®), a novel surface treatment method safely and easily modifying the surface properties was evaluated in vitro and in vivo. Ti-6Al-4V disks were washed and the disks were kept standing on a clean bench for one and four weeks for aging. These disks were immersed in S-100® (S-100 group), immersed in ultra-pure water (Control group), or irradiated with ultraviolet light (UV group), and surface analysis, cell experiment, and animal experiment were performed using these disks. The titanium surface became hydrophilic in the S-100 group and the amount of protein adsorption and cell adhesion rate were improved in vitro. In vivo, new bone formation was noted around the disk. These findings suggested that surface treatment with S-100® adds bioactivity to the biologically aged titanium surface. We are planning to further investigate it and accumulate evidence for clinical application.

ABSTRACT Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the tissue dissolution efficacy of four root canal irrigation solutions (sodium hypochlorite [NaOCl], chlorhexidine gluconate [CHX], Octenidine [OCT], and QMix 2in1) on bovine pulp tissue. Materials and Methods: Fifty bovine pulp tissue samples, each weighing 6.55 mg, were prepared and randomly divided into four experimental groups and one control group (n = 10) according to the dissolution irrigants used: (1) 5.25% NaOCl group; (2) 2% CHX group; (3) OCT group; (4) QMix 2in1 group; and (5) control group (saline solution). These samples were then placed into special bovine dentin reservoir models and immersed for 1 h with each test solution (0.1 mL of each) at room temperature. The pulp samples were then blotted dry and weighed again. The percentage of weight loss was calculated. Statistically analyzed with one-way analysis of variance and post-hoc Tukey tests (P = 0.05). Results: Saline solution did not dissolve the bovine pulp tissue. All groups, except OCT, dissolved pulp samples more effectively than the control group (P < 0.05). The highest tissue dissolution was observed in 5.25% NaOCl group (P < 0.05). No statistically significant difference was found between the tissue-dissolving effect between QMix 2in1 and those of 2% CHX. Conclusions: Within the limitations of this in vitro study, NaOCl exhibited the best tissue-dissolving effect out of all solutions tested. CHX and QMix 2in1 were able to dissolve pulp tissue but less than NaOCl. OCT and saline solutions could not exhibit significantly tissue-dissolving effectiveness. This study shown that QMix 2in1 has little capacity to dissolve pulp tissue therefore used alone is not sufficient for this purpose.

This study evaluated in vitro the capacity of debris removal from the apical third of flattened root canals, using different final irrigation protocols. Thirty human mandibular central incisors with a mesiodistal flattened root were prepared using rotary instrumentation by Endo-Flare 25.12 and Hero 642 30.06, 35.02, 40.02 files, irrigated with 2 mL of 1% NaOCl after each file. The specimens were randomly distributed into 5 groups according to the final irrigation of root canals: Group I: 10 mL of distilled water (control), Group II: 10 mL of 1% NaOCl for 8 min, Group III: 2 mL of 1% NaOCl for 2 min (repeated 4 times), Group IV: 10 mL of 2.5% NaOCl for 8 min, and Group V: 10 mL of 2.5% NaOCl for 2 min (repeated 4 times). The apical thirds of the specimens were subjected to histological processing and 6-μm cross-sections were obtained and stained with hematoxylin-eosin. The specimens were examined under optical microscopy at ×40 magnification and the images were subjected to morphometric analysis using the Scion image-analysis software. The total area of root canal and the area with debris were measured in square millimeters. Analysis of variance showed no statistically significant difference (p>0.05) among the groups GI (2.39 ± 3.59), GII (2.91 ± 2.21), GIII (0.73 ± 1.36), GIV (0.95 ± 0.84) and GV (0.51 ± 0.22). In conclusion, the final irrigation protocols evaluated in this study using the Luer syringe presented similar performance in the removal of debris from the apical third of flattened root canals.

Abstract The objective of this study was to compare the course of parturitions induced with sole oxytocin with those induced with the combination of intracervical prostaglandin E2 jelly and oxytocin. For this purpose 13 mares in advanced pregnancy were allocated to the groups pretreated with either intracervical PGE2 (experimental group) or saline (control group) two hours before intravenous oxytocin (5 IU) administration. The mares were compared with respect to cervical dilation diameter (CDD) 20 min. after oxytocin injection. Time intervals from the first oxytocin dose to: the first external signs of parturition, the chorioallantois rupture, the delivery of a foal and time interval from the delivery of a foal to the placenta separation were measured. Cervical dilatation diameter as well as proportion of mares with cervical dilatation > 20 cm were significantly higher in the group of PGE2 treated mares comparing with control group (p = 0.0115 and p = 0.0490, respectively). All time intervals measured were statistically insignificant for both groups of mares, however time intervals from the first oxytocin dose to the first external signs of parturition, to the allantochorion rupture and to the delivery of a foal, were very close to the significance level (α = 0.05). To conclude, PGE/oxytocin combination has positive influence on the preparation of the uterine cervix to parturition. Moreover, it seems that PGE2 pretreatment reduced total oxytocin dose for successful parturition induction and shortened time elapsing between the first oxytocin dose and the delivery of a foal what is crucial for foal’s safety
