Ethane constitutes an explosive gas. It most often accompanies methane realizing during exploitation and mining works. In this paper the results of ethane sorption have been discussed on three grain classes of six selected hard coal samples collected from active Polish coalmines. On the basis of obtained results, it has been stated that the tested hard coals prove differentiated sorption power with reference to ethane. Te extreme amount of ethane is sorbed by low carbonized hard coal from “Jaworzno” coalmine. This sort of coal shows great porosity, and great content of oxygen and moisture. The least amount of ethane is sorbed by hard coal from “Sośnica” coalmine. This sort of coal possesses relatively a great deal of ash contents. Together with the process of coal disintegration, the amount of sorbed ethane increases for all tested coal samples. Between tested coals there are three medium carbonized samples collected from “Pniówek”, “Chwałowice” “Zofiówka” coalmines which are characterized by small surface values counted according to model BET from nitrogen sorption isotherms determined at the temperature of 77.5 K. The samples of these three coals prove the highest, from between tested coals, increase of ethane sorption occurring together with their disintegration. These samples disintegrated to 0,063-0,075 mm grain class sorb ethane in the amount corresponding with the sorption quantity of low carbonized coal from “Jaworzno” coalmine in 0.5-0.7 mm grain class. It should be marked that the low carbonized samples collected from “Jaworzno” and Wesoła” coalmines possess large specific surface and great porosity and belong to coal group of “loose” spatial structure. Regarding profusion of sorbed ethane on disintegrated medium carbonized samples from “Pniówek”, “Zofiówka”, “Chwałowice” coalmines it can be supposed that in the process of coal disintegration, breaking their “compact’ structure occurs. Loosened structure of medium carbonized coals results in increasing accessibility of ethane particles to sorption centres both electron donors and electron acceptors which are present on hard coal surface. The surface sorption centre increase may result in formation a compact layer of ethane particles on coal surface. In the formed layer, not only the strengths of vertical binding of ethane particles with the coal surface appear but also the impact of horizontal strengths appears which forms a compact layer of sorbed ethane particles. The surface layer of ethane particles may lead to explosion.

AbstractThe goal of this study was to determine whether the Tethapod system, which was designed to determine the impedance properties of lipid bilayers, could be used for cell culture in order to utilise micro-impedance spectroscopy to examine further biological applications. To that purpose we have used normal epithelial cells from kidney (RPTEC) and a kidney cancer cell model (786-O). We demonstrate that the Tethapod system is compatible with the culture of 10,000 cells seeded to grow on a small area gold measurement electrode for several days without affecting the cell viability. Furthermore, the range of frequencies for EIS measurements were tuned to examine easily the characteristics of the cell monolayer. We demonstrate significant differences in the paracellular resistance pathway between normal and cancer kidney epithelial cells. Thus, we conclude that this device has advantages for the study of cultured cells that include (i) the configuration of measurement and reference electrodes across a microfluidic channel, and (ii) the small surface area of 6 parallel measurement electrodes (2.1 mm2) integrated in a microfluidic system. These characteristics might improve micro-impedance spectroscopy measurement techniques to provide a simple tool for further studies in the field of the patho-physiology of biological barriers.

Results of the basic model configuration of the REMO project, a Brazilian approach towards operational oceanography, are discussed. This configuration consists basically of a high-resolution eddy-resolving, 1/12 degree model for the Metarea V, nested in a medium-resolution eddy-permitting, 1/4 degree model of the Atlantic Ocean. These simulations performed with HYCOM model, aim for: a) creating a basic set-up for implementation of assimilation techniques leading to ocean prediction; b) the development of hydrodynamics bases for environmental studies; c) providing boundary conditions for regional domains with increased resolution. The 1/4 degree simulation was able to simulate realistic equatorial and south Atlantic large scale circulation, both the wind-driven and the thermohaline components. The high resolution simulation was able to generate mesoscale and represent well the variability pattern within the Metarea V domain. The BC mean transport values were well represented in the southwestern region (between Vitória-Trinidade sea mount and 29S), in contrast to higher latitudes (higher than 30S) where it was slightly underestimated. Important issues for the simulation of the South Atlantic with high resolution are discussed, like the ideal place for boundaries, improvements in the bathymetric representation and the control of bias SST, by the introducing of a small surface relaxation. In order to make a preliminary assessment of the model behavior when submitted to data assimilation, the Cooper & Haines (1996) method was used to extrapolate SSH anomalies fields to deeper layers every 7 days, with encouraging results.

The paper consists of the discussion of issues related to the durability of foundations of extra high voltage (EHV) power line poles and possibilities of their renovation. The research part is the diagnostics of selected foundations of the EHV line poles (400 kV) Wielopole–Noszowice. During the on-site inspection, it was found that there are chipping and small surface defects, and in some cases losses of the reinforcement cover without visible pits. Based on the degree of damage, the scope of non-structural repairs and anti-corrosive protection was determined, presenting the next stages of their implementation.

The surfaces of animals, plants and abiotic structures are not only important for organismal survival, but they have also inspired countless biomimetic and industrial applications. Additionally, the surfaces of animals and plants exhibit an unprecedented level of diversity, and animals often move on the surface of plants. Replicating these surfaces offers a number of advantages, such as preserving a surface that is likely to degrade over time, controlling for non-structural aspects of surfaces, such as compliance and chemistry, and being able to produce large areas of a small surface. In this paper, we compare three replication techniques among a number of species of plants, a technical surface and a rock. We then use two model parameters (cross-covariance function ratio and relative topography difference) to develop a unique method for quantitatively evaluating the quality of the replication. Finally, we outline future directions that can employ highly accurate surface replications, including ecological and evolutionary studies, biomechanical experiments, industrial applications and improving haptic properties of bioinspired surfaces. The recent advances associated with surface replication and imaging technology have formed a foundation on which to incorporate surface information into biological sciences and to improve industrial and biomimetic applications. The motion of a viscous droplet in unbounded Poiseuille flow under the combined influence of bulk-insoluble surfactant and linearly varying temperature field aligned in the direction of imposed flow is studied analytically. Neglecting fluid inertia, thermal convection and shape deformation, asymptotic analysis is performed to obtain the velocity of a force-free surfactant-laden droplet. The droplet speed and direction of motion are strongly influenced by the interfacial transport of surfactant, which is governed by surface Péclet number. The present study is focused on the following two limiting situations of surfactant transport: (i) surface-diffusion-dominated surfactant transport considering small surface Péclet number, and (ii) surface-convection-dominated surfactant transport considering high surface Péclet number. Thermocapillary-induced Marangoni stress, the strength of which relative to viscous stress is represented by the thermal Marangoni number, has a strong influence on the distribution of surfactant on the droplet surface. The present study shows that the motion of a surfactant-laden droplet in the combined presence of temperature and imposed Poiseuille flow cannot be obtained by a simple superposition of the following two independent results: migration of a surfactant-free droplet in a temperature gradient, and the motion of a surfactant-laden droplet in a Poiseuille flow. The temperature field not only affects the axial velocity of the droplet, but also has a non-trivial effect on the cross-stream velocity of the droplet in spite of the fact that the temperature gradient is aligned with the Poiseuille flow direction. When the imposed temperature increases in the direction of the Poiseuille flow, the droplet migrates towards the flow centreline. The magnitude of both axial and cross-stream velocity components increases with the thermal Marangoni number. However, when the imposed temperature decreases in the direction of the Poiseuille flow, the magnitude of both axial and cross-stream velocity components may increase or decrease with the thermal Marangoni number. Most interestingly, the droplet moves either towards the flow centreline or away from it. The present study shows a critical value of the thermal Marangoni number beyond which the droplet moves away from the flow centreline which is in sharp contrast to the motion of a surfactant-laden droplet in isothermal flow, for which the droplet always moves towards the flow centreline. Interestingly, we show that the above picture may become significantly altered in the case where the droplet is not a neutrally buoyant one. When the droplet is less dense than the suspending medium, the presence of gravity in the direction of the Poiseuille flow can lead to cross-stream motion of the droplet away from the flow centreline even when the temperature increases in the direction of the Poiseuille flow. These results may bear far-reaching consequences in various emulsification techniques in microfluidic devices, as well as in biomolecule synthesis, vesicle dynamics, single-cell analysis and nanoparticle synthesis.
