Thriving under New Ways of Working conditions: Reduced burnout, more engagement? Thriving under New Ways of Working conditions: Reduced burnout, more engagement? This study investigated the relationship between work conditions characterizing ‘New Ways of Working’ (NWW) and employees’ work-related exhaustion and dedication. NWW was conceptualized as a bundle of three working conditions which, in terms of the JobDemands-Resource Model, can be viewed as a work-related resource: (1) having access to teleworking; (2) job autonomy; and (3) output management. In order to test a set of hypotheses, we employed data on 2.784 employees collected through the Cohort Study Social Innovation at two points in time (2008 and 2009). Based on cross-sectional and longitudinal regression analyses, and in line with expectations, the study showed that the NWW-conditions ‘access to teleworking’ and ‘more job autonomy’ are associated with less emotional exhaustion and more dedication among employees. Output management, viewed as part of the NWW-bundle, was not directly associated with exhaustion and dedication, but enhanced the effects of teleworking and job autonomy on dedication. On the basis of the longitudinal interaction effects, it was shown that selecting a balanced combination of HRM-practices can help to achieve positive work outcomes. In the conclusion, directions for future research on NWW were outlined.

Forensic mortuaries have always presented a potential threat to workers who come into contact with dead bodies. This research aims to identify hazards faced by forensic mortuary personnel, including forensic pathologists and technicians working in forensic mortuaries in forensic medicine centres throughout Saudi Arabia, to recognise the prevalence of exposure to workplace hazards and to discover the degree of awareness and use of safety practices. A descriptive, cross-sectional study was conducted in a total of 20 forensic medicine centres, using an online questionnaire distributed among forensic mortuary personnel. A total of 113 participants responded to the questionnaire. Just over half (53%) of workplaces always provided personal protective equipment, and 75% of participants always used them. The most common hazards were needle-prick wounds and accidental slips or falls. Almost two thirds (64%) of participants witnessed or experienced a work-related accident in the forensic mortuary. The lack of previous studies concerning hazard exposure among forensic mortuary personnel in Saudi Arabia means that this study provides foundational evidence for future research concerning forensic autopsy-related work accidents in Saudi Arabia.

Abstract Objectives To determine the working conditions and work-related health issues of female domestic workers (FDWs) in four districts of Karachi. Methods Population-based cross-sectional study was conducted in four squatter settlements of Karachi with sample size of 406 FDWs in 2018. Pretested questionnaire was administered to collect data through snowball technique. Multivariate logistic regression examined the association between different factors and experiencing violence, work-related injuries, and chemical exposures. Results Only (14.5%) of domestic workers earned Rs 15 000 (75 GBP month−1) and above. >1% had financial support for the health or education of children. Verbal violence included shouting (40.9%), constant critique of work (17.2%), and job threats (13.5%). Common workplace injuries were cuts (30.8%), burns (27.6%), and bruises (23.6%). Doing laundry showed significant positive association with experiencing cuts [odds ratio (OR) = 2.09; 1.15–3.71], looking after children to bruises (OR = 2.29; 1.07–4.88), and cooking to burns (OR = 4.66; 2.68–8.08). Conclusions Creating economic environment which is equal for all low wage workers, setting up domestic labor standards and holding employers accountable to them is essential.

Brick manufacturing is a labor intensive informal industry using child workers as the major work force in Nepal. Workers are required to use physical strength, carry heavy loads and remain in a squatted posture for longer periods doing repetitive tasks posing threats to musculoskeletal system. This study involved cross sectional study of children aged 17 years and below. The study respondent included 101 cases and 64 controls in Bhaktapur and 97 cases and 43 controls in Sarlahi. Lack of adequate physical infrastructures, poor working conditions with non existent safety procedures have posed risk to physical, metal and overall well being of children. The study identifies work related physical       ailments and discomforts dominate brick industries of Nepal. The  musculoskeletal disorder related pain and discomfort was experienced by 73 per cent of working  children in Bhaktapur and 58 per cent in Sarlahi. The odds ratio suggests that working children were 8 times more likely to experience trouble or body pain compared to non-working children. This study finds that presence of inferior physical environment, working conditions and practices has contributed to musculoskeletal injuries and problems exposing working children to risks and hazards. Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to investigate whether the relationship between perceived investment in employee development (PIED) and taking charge is moderated by perceived job autonomy. Design/methodology/approach – Self-report data were obtained from 737 employees. In addition, manager ratings of taking charge were obtained for 154 employees from their respective managers. Hierarchical moderated regression analyses were used to test the hypotheses. Findings – The results revealed a positive relationship between PIED and both self-reported and manager-rated taking charge only for employees who perceived high levels of job autonomy. Research limitations/implications – Given the cross-sectional nature of the data, no causal inferences can be drawn. Practical implications – Managers and organizations may benefit from providing work conditions that facilitate a felt obligation to reciprocate, but at the same time provide sufficient levels of perceived job autonomy to actually do so with respect to increasing the levels of employees’ voluntary and constructive efforts to improve work situations. Social implications – Greater levels of employee taking charge behaviors may offset the decline of businesses and thus aid in reducing long-term unemployment in the society at large. Originality/value – This study contributes to a more complete understanding of how job characteristics may facilitate or inhibit the influence of antecedents for taking charge.

BACKGROUND: Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) are prevalent among waste collectors (WCs) in developing countries. AIM: This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of MSDs and the factors associated with the risk of persistent musculoskeletal pain among WCs in Hanoi, Vietnam. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was utilized to study 468 WCs in 2017. The Örebro Musculoskeletal Pain Questionnaire and a questionnaire on demographic and work conditions were used to collect data. Descriptive and multivariate logistics regression analyzes were applied at a significance level of 0.05 to examine the factors related to the risk of persistent pain. FINDINGS: About 74.4% of the participants of this study experienced MSDs in at least one body region and 9.4% reported MSDs in all 10 body sites. The lower back was reported to be the most affected followed by the neck and shoulders. The risk of persistent musculoskeletal pain was significantly associated with age (odds ratio (OR) = 2.31, confidence interval (CI) = 1.05–5.09), gender (OR = 3.29, CI = 1.28–8.44), work hours (OR = 2.35, CI = 1.12–4.92), work shift (OR = 0.48, CI = 0.26–0.92), duration of poor postures of the neck (OR = 0.31, CI = 0.13–0.76), bent back (OR = 0.4 CI = 0.18–0.92) and for medial rotation (OR = 3.01, CI = 1.42–6.36), carrying heavy objects (OR = 2.94, CI = 1.15–7.48), and experience of work dissatisfaction (OR = 3.31, CI = 1.46-7.52), stress (OR = 7.14, CI = 3.14–16.24), or anxiety (OR = 6.37, CI = 3.07–13.21). CONCLUSIONS: High prevalence of MSDs among WCs and its association with self-assessed unfavorable work postures and work-related stress implies the need of mechanical and social support at work for WC to prevent the development of MSDs and persistent pain.

Little is known about working conditions of social workers providing help in homeless and refugee aid. Therefore, the present study examined their work-related demands, job and personal resources as well as workplace violence, domain-specific demands, and gender-related differences. Job demands and resources were analyzed with regard to their association with job stress and job satisfaction. Two hundred and fifty-three social workers (69.2% female, 30.8% male) from four federal states in Germany (Berlin, Hamburg, Schleswig-Holstein, and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania) took part in the cross-sectional quantitative online survey that included validated scales and exploratory items especially developed for the target group. Multiple regression analysis showed that resilience as a personal resource was a significant negative predictor of perceived job stress. Emotional demands were positively related with perceived job stress. Meaning of work and social support were strongly associated with job satisfaction. Language and bureaucratic barriers as well as being affected by clients’ experiences were the domain-specific demands named most often. The study offers insights into the work-related demands and resources and their respective impact on perceived job stress and job satisfaction experienced by social workers in refugee and homeless aid. In order to ensure health and safety for this occupational group, health promotion measures focusing on structural aspects are recommended.

BACKGROUND: Tinnitus is an auditory impression without any external auditory stimulus. It may cause negative symptoms (anxiety, insomnia, depression) significantly affecting work performance and job satisfaction. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the job satisfaction in tinnitus sufferers. METHODS: Cross- sectional study were conducted and 51 individuals (23–70 years) were recruited. Participants completed two questionnaires: Tinnitus Handicap Inventory and Job Satisfaction Scale. RESULTS: People affected by tinnitus report higher job satisfaction than healthy people. Job satisfaction was significantly related to age: r = 0.31; p <  0.05 in all tinnitus patients. There was a correlation between job satisfaction and tinnitus severity but only in people with normal hearing (–0.69; p <  0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The results show that job satisfaction is affected by the level of tinnitus annoyance (from both its emotional and functional aspects), but only in people with normal hearing. In future research it is recommended that additional factors be investigated, both work and non-work related, to thoroughly explore the impact of tinnitus on job satisfaction.

Abstract Background Work related stress reduces the overall mental and physical wellbeing of employees. Workers in health industry are more prone to work stress than any other workplace. Many researches were conducted among health-care professionals, but not among hospital employees who are not involved in the direct patient’s care. Objectives This study was aiming to measure the prevalence of work related stress among employees of Ain Shams University Hospitals, to determine its risk factors and to measure its effect on the occurrence of depression, anxiety and stress. Method A cross-sectional study was conducted upon a sample of employees in Ain Shams University Hospitals, working in the same job for at least one year and not involved in direct patient’s care. Employees were interviewed using the “workplace stress scale”, the “Depression Anxiety Stress Scale DASS-21”, and the “socioeconomic status scale for health research in Egypt” by El-Gilany. Results The study included 462 participants, their age ranged from 18 to 59 years (mean ± SD: 43.4 ± 10.9), 171(37%) were males and 291 (63%) were females, and the majority were in the middle and high social class (79.2% and 16.9%) respectively). Most of the employee experienced work-related stress: 40 (87.7%) of them, the moderate, severe, and dangerous levels were 32.3%, 22.5% and 7.6% respectively. Work-related stress was significantly associated with job category with engineers were the least stressed (50%) and workers were the most (94.1%). The majority of participants suffered any of the three mental ill-health and the frequency of depression, anxiety and stress (312 (67.5), 319 (69.0) and 239 (51.7) respectively). Severe/extremely severe levels of depression, anxiety and stress were observed among 20.8%, 34.6% and 17.6% of participants respectively. Work related stress was significantly associated with the three mental ill-health status. Conclusion This study revealed a high level of workrelated stress among hospital employee who are not involved in patient’s care with around fifth of them suffered severe levels of mental ill-health. Occupational stress resulted mainly from inadequate control over work duties and unpleasant or unsafe work conditions.
