Enclosed Exhibitions : Claustrophobia, Balloons, and the Department Store in Zola’s Au Bonheur des Dames

This chapter examines spatial confinement in the eponymous department store of Émile Zola’s Au Bonheur des Dames. A close reading of one of the novel’s sale chapters reveals that the store director mobilizes several strategies to engender a suffocating atmosphere at the temporary exhibition. Linking literary space and publicity, the chapter argues that the store’s promotional balloons act as ephemeral, yet dynamic advertisements that dismantle interior and exterior space. The balloons instantiate the ephemeral quality of the sales since, in spite of their brief duration, they produce a lasting visual effect that problematizes a spatial framework opposing interior and exterior spaces. This reading suggests that publicity contributes to the claustrophobia of commerce in Zola’s fictional ephemeral exhibitions.

This essay discusses an important feature of much modern Islamic writing on law, politics and morality. The feature in question is the claim that Islamic law and human nature (fiṭra) are in perfect harmony, that Islam is the “natural religion” (dīn al-fiṭra), and thus that the demands of Islamic law are easy and painless for ordinary human moral capacities. My discussion proceeds through a close reading of the Moroccan independence leader and religious scholar ʿAllāl al-Fāsī (d. 1974). I discuss the ambiguities within Fāsī’s theory and suggest that the natural religion doctrine might be better understood less as a reduction of Islamic law to “natural law” and more as an apologetic effort to defend the realism and feasibility of Islamic law. In the hands of reformers like Fāsī, this project is beset with unresolved ambiguities around the constraining quality of revealed law in practice and the moral validity of non-Islamic political and ethical systems.

Abstract- Cilincing and Marunda are two kampongs situated in the north of Jakarta, immediately bordering on the Java Sea. The existence of the fishing villages sketches the lives of these communities. They make their living out of catching fish and other produce, so the lives of the fishing community take place between water and land. This situation has led to their settlement differing from others in the urban kampong. The synergy stimulated by the water-based context has inspired the unique architectural features of these villages, in terms of planning the lay-out of the dwelling-places or residential area. This research study is a descriptive-comparative analysis of the exploitation of exterior space based on the configuration pattern of the mass lay-out of the fishing villages observed. The data collection technique consists of gathering the relevant physical data along with those covering related activities. The physical data have been obtained by way of field mapping and observation, while the data concerning activities have been collected through observation and interviews conducted with the respondents, namely the inhabitants of the Cilincing fishing village (RT 012) and of Marunda (RT 03). The data have been divided based on the major outdoor activities of the community involved (sea-faring and residing). Finally, a comparison has been drawn between the research results of these two villages. The findings indicate that the configuration of the mass lay-out in these two fishing villages has created a quality of exterior space exploitation that is different as well. The one that displays a scattered lay-out pattern has a large volume of exterior space at its disposal that is left unexploited by its inhabitants, both for sea-bound activities and residential land-bound ones. The propinquity of the mass has created exterior space that is more intimate in nature. Keywords: Configuration of mass lay-out, exterior space

Abstrak

Tracking and Chromakey as Visual Effect Design Technique (Study Case: Video Clip Visual Effect. Visual effect in audio visual media and animation is commonly use, especially chromakey technique or usually described as green screen or blue screen, a certain color element to acknowledge the alpha channel. In compositing technique, the using of tracking and chromakey technique are both known as visual effect technique. But on online editing works, the result seldom not at its best. This problem is usually occurred from early production process until the final process in the process of video making. The quality of final result based on early raw footage used. The objective of this research is to know the technical factors to achieve better method appliance in order to enhance the quality of final result. The study case is video clip that has short duration, more variative and has natural compositing result. The literature studies of software and user approached is the method use to analyses the problem. The result of this research is the understanding of tracking and chromakey method in video clip making process to achieve the visual effect needed.

With “Phantoms,” the second solo piano piece from her Four Sketches op. 15 (1892), American composer Amy Beach adopts a “strategic” approach to tonality that manipulates formal, harmonic, and linear closure. The analysis presented in this chapter demonstrates, through a close reading of the phrase structure, harmonic vocabulary, textures, motivic design, and voice leading of the piece, Beach’s aptitude for tonal obfuscation, which she employs to convey a sense of the epigraph she borrowed from Victor Hugo: “Toutes fragiles fleurs, sitôt que nées” (“Such fragile flowers, as soon as they are born”). The melody she constructs is indeed fragile, floating as it does over various “misharmonizations,” and including not one but two gaps in its descent from ‸5 to the tonic. By avoiding explicit melodic reference to ‸4 and ‸2 and making abundant use of registral coupling, Beach compellingly captures the ethereal quality of the flowers described by Hugo.

Walter Benjamin’s essay “The Task of the Translator,” the most widely cited twentieth century philosophical statement on translation, is commonly seen as one of the most opaque and misunderstood essays in the field. This paper uses a close reading of Benjamin’s doctoral thesis, “The Concept of Criticism in German Romanticism,” to throw light on his thoughts on translation. I argue that the German Romantics’ definition of art, and art’s relation to criticism, are crucial to understanding why Benjamin conceived of translation as an “afterlife” of the work of art, why he believed that translatability is an innate quality of the work of art, and why he speaks of translation as moving the work of art onto a higher plane. I read Benjamin’s own essay on translation as a sort of “criticism” which seeks to “translate” the philosophical ideals of the Romantics, and thus give them an afterlife, and then reflect upon the implications for translation studies today.

The quality of indoor lighting is a sensitive issue in the dynamic environment of daily life. The lighting industry offers a wide range of products and solutions on the huge market. However, the existing European Union and Latvian lighting regulations and standards cover questions related to the visual effect of lighting on the performance of the visual task, but it is already proven, that visual effect of lighting also affects productivity and causes emotions. Standards and regulations used by construction and real estate industries prescribe lighting parameters which are becoming outdated with a development of the solid-state lighting technologies. The aim of the paper is to review the existing lighting planning theory and practice, selecting the parameters which might have most sensitive effect as prerequisites for improving the quality of life, and might be included in quality standards, handbooks and procurement procedures for the projects, over time in building standards, norms and regulations.

Abstract This paper investigates the Sufi concept of futuwwa (spiritual chivalry) in ʿAbdallāh Anṣārī al-Harawī’s (d. 481/1089) classic manual of spiritual wayfaring, Manāzil al-Sāʾirīn (“Stations of the Wayfarers”). After briefly taking stock of the earliest statements on futuwwa cited in al-Qushayrī’s (d. 465/1073) Risāla, we take a closer look at the Manāzil’s commentarial tradition, offering a complete translation of both Anṣārī’s chapter on the subject and ʿAbd al-Razzāq al-Kāshānī’s (d. 731/1330) commentary. In Anṣārī’s view, there are three aspects to futuwwa. The first aspect is in relation to oneself, the second is in relation to others, and the third is in relation to God. Futuwwa in relation to oneself is to accept trials and tribulations in stride. With respect to others, it is to hold oneself but not others accountable, seeing outward injuries as inward blessings. With respect to one’s relation to God, it is to abandon means and ends, relying on God alone through the heart’s reception, not the intellect’s endeavour. The discussion section offers an ontological-ethical investigation through a close reading of the text and its commentary, then offers a broader perspective on futuwwa, which is tantamount to the noblest character traits (makārim al-akhlāq). In the final analysis, futuwwa symbolises the quality of the spiritual warrior who conquers his lower self to attain the makārim al-akhlāq.
