Many factors such as number of vehicles, speed, climatic conditions and other factors affect are to be considered for the design of pavement. In this article we will discuss about the factors influencing pavement design. Pavements are engineered structures which are used as roads, runways, parking areas, etc. Ground or surface transportation is the most widely used transportation in the world. So, construction of pavements should be done as it is strong and durable for their design life. There are so many factors which influencing the pavement design. The factors may be of loading, environment, materials used etc. Which are as follows Wheel load, Axle configuration, Contact pressure, Vehicle speed, Repetition of loads, Subgrade type, Temperature and Precipitation. This paper aims to present a review on the performance, problems and possible remedial measures practices for roads constructed on these problematic soils in the country. Finally, emphasis should be given to the importance in construction in this kind of soil of strictly applying engineered design of geometric, drainage, pavement thickness, material selection and proportioning. Thus, those concerned bodies shall decide to accept and control the risk associated with construction on this soil or not, or to decide that more detail study is required to allow for extra design and construction preemptive measures once the potential problem has been identified and the end user convinced of the cost-savings in adopting a pro-active approach.

It is likely that under modern-day conditions, design, designer and materials selection would follow a parallel continuum in a cycle. The attitude in materials selection confronts us as one of the substantial values directing the design. Therefore, it should be approached in certain criteria. Today, designers have to put emphasis on not only the setting and style of the space they are designing, but also on the relationship between the materials used and the environment at the same time. In our day, designers have an intense awareness on the use of renewable resources. Hence, it is obvious that a special importance should be given to the fact that the materials are in a cycle of sustainable and recycled. In this study, 15 design offices are asked the question of “what are the factors affecting your materials decisions and what are your selection criteria in general?” by using the interview technique. As a result of interviews conducted with design offices regarding their materials selection, many criteria are identified. It is seen that although sustainability is not clearly stated by designers among these criteria, it actively takes part in the content. In the light of answers provided and interviews, the relationship between materials selection criteria and sustainability will be examined over the standpoints of 12 offices that particularly mentioned the area of sustainability.

This article deals with the design problems of gravel road pavements. Mathematical models related to geological and hydrological conditions of a location, thickness of gravel pavement and characteristics of the gravel contained in this pavement are proposed to be used for pavements. For the selection of gravel pavements for reconstruction we recommend the models developed by the method of experimental planning to calculate the equivalent deformation modulus of the gravel pavements change depending on the deformation modulus of the subgrade, thickness of the gravel pavement and the materials used for its layers. Practical applications of these models will eliminate the mistakes that are still found in road pavement design.

The present study identified the similarities and differences in the radial growth responses of 20 provenances of 51-year-old European larch (Larix decidua Mill.) trees from Poland to the climatic conditions at three provenance trials situated in the Polish lowlands (Siemianice), uplands (Bliżyn) and mountains (Krynica). A chronology of radial growth indices was developed for each of 60 European larch populations, which highlighted the interannual variations in the climate-mediated radial growth of their trees. With the aid of principal component, correlation and multiple regression analysis, supra-regional climatic elements were identified to which all the larch provenances reacted similarly at all three provenance trials. They increased the radial growth in years with a short, warm and precipitation-rich winter; a cool and humid summer and when high precipitation in late autumn of the previous year was noted. Moreover, other climatic elements were identified to which two groups of the larch provenances reacted differently at each provenance trial. In the lowland climate, the provenances reacted differently to temperature in November to December of the previous year and July and to precipitation in September. In the upland climate, the provenances differed in growth sensitivity to precipitation in October of the previous year and June–September. In the mountain climate, the provenances responded differently to temperature and precipitation in September of the previous year and to precipitation in February, June and September of the year of tree ring formation. The results imply that both climatic factors and origin (genotype), i.e., the genetic factor, mediate the climate–growth relationships of larch provenances.

Relevance of the article is based on participation of armed forces in various operations and exercises, where reliability of machinery is one of the most important factors. Transportation of soldiers as well as completion of variety of tasks is ensured by properly functioning technical equipment. Reliability of military vehicles – armoured SISU E13TP Finnish built and HMMWV M1025 USA built were selected as the object of the article. Impact of climatic conditions on reliability of the vehicles exploited in southwestern part of the Atlantic continental forest area is researched by a case study of the vehicles exploitation under conditions of the climate of Lithuania. Reliability of military vehicles depends on a number of factors such as properties of the vehicles and external conditions of their operation. Their systems and mechanisms are influenced by a number of factors that cause different failures. Climatic conditions represent one of the factors of operating load which is directly dependent on the climate zone. Therefore, assessment of the reliability is started with the analysis of climatic factors affecting operating conditions of the vehicles. Relationship between the impact of climatic factors and failure flow of the vehicles is presented and discussed.

This paper presents a computational tool for estimating energy generated by low-power photovoltaic systems based on the specific conditions of the study region since the characteristic energy equation can be obtained considering the main climatological factors affecting these systems in terms of the symmetry or skewness of the random distribution of the generated energy. Furthermore, this paper is aimed at determining any correlation that exists between meteorological variables with respect to the energy generated by 5-kW solar systems in the specific climatic conditions of the Republic of Cuba. The paper also presents the results of the influence of each climate factor on the distribution symmetry of the generated energy of the solar system. Studying symmetry in statistical models is important because they allow us to establish the degree of symmetry (or skewness), which is the probability distribution of a random variable, without having to make a graphical representation of it. Statistical skewness reports the degree to which observations are distributed evenly and proportionally above and below the center (highest) point of the distribution. In the case when the mentioned distribution is balanced, it is called symmetric.

The results of a statistical assessment of the influence of changing weather and climatic conditions of the territory of Belarus on the productivity of the main winter cereal crops are presented in order to build computational models of productivity. The calculations were made with respect to the climatic component as a predictor, taking into account the deviations of air temperature and precipitation from the long-term climatic norm of months that have the most significant effect on the yield of the studied crops. For winter rye and wheat, adequate models of yield variability have been built. The research results are relevant for solving forecasting problems.

Traffic related noise is currently considered as an environmental pollution. Paper presents results of multidirectional study attempting to serve urban traffic without the need to erect noise barriers interfering urban space. Initial concept of the road expansion included construction of 1000 m of noise barriers dividing city space. Improvement in the acoustic conditions after construction completion is possible due to the applied noise protection measures: vehicle speed limit, smooth of traffic flow, use of road pavement of reduced noise emission and the technical improvement of the tramway.

Permeable surfaces for roads and footpaths have been used as a means of disposal of stormwater in developed urban areas. Such surfaces provide an alternative to impermeable concrete or tarmacadam surfaces which would otherwise produce rapid stormwater runoff, leading to possible flooding and degeneration of receiving water quality through the uncontrolled discharge of polluted urban waters. A further advantage may be obtained from such constructions by undersealing them so as to retain stormwater for re-use for non-potable uses. The potential for general introduction of this type of storage and re-use system in residential areas is discussed and possible alternative designs for the drainage infrastructure proposed. To have widespread impact such a strategy must deliver cost savings as well as reduce the impact on the water environment of anticipated water usage demands. The source of such cost savings and the general environmental benefits of such systems will be presented. The materials used in such a sealed construction and the beneficial changes to the stored water quality are outlined. Recent work has also shown that where the pavement is used for car parking any oils dropped on the surface and washed into the structure by the stormwater may also be degraded. Details will be given of a site in the UK where the above construction is to be used to provide stormwater storage for re-use in flushing toilets at a Youth Hostel.

Production and  profit from maize farming can be substantially increased by allocating resources efficiently and adopting improved maize variety. In this context, a study was undertaken to determine the allocative efficiency and factors affecting adoption of improved maize variety in Eastern hills of Nepal. Random sampling was conducted in eastern part of Khotang district namely, Halesi municipality and Diktel Rupakot Majuwagadi municipality during month of March 2019. Pretested semi-structured questionnaire was administered among 80 randomly selected farmers cultivating maize since last two years. Face to face interview was scheduled to obtain data. Cobb Douglas production function was used to determine allocative efficiency; probit regression model was launched to determine factors affecting adoption of improved maize variety.  Significant positive relation of cost of seed, planting, and weeding with income has suggested to increase expenditure on certified maize seed over own farm seed, line sowing over broadcasting, and weeding. The model revealed that increasing all the factors of production by 100% would result in increase in income by 71.83%. Furthermore, cultivating improved maize variety is more profitable than own farm seed. Probit regression model showed that, farmers who have received training, who were member of cooperatives and who have received high schooling were more likely to adopt open-pollinated improved maize variety. Unavailability of inputs (seed, fertilizer, and labor), insect pest attack and adverse climatic conditions were major constraint of maize farming. Therefore, it would be better to suggest maize producers to increase expenditure on seed; make maize field weed free and adopt line sowing method. In addition, providing training, increasing access over inputs and encouraging farmers towards cooperatives could be virtuous for sustainable maize production.

In recent years, there has been a push toward designing long-lasting thick hot mix asphalt (HMA) pavements, commonly referred to as a perpetual pavements (PP). For these pavements, it is expected that bottom-up fatigue cracking does not occur if the strain level is below a certain limit that is called the HMA fatigue endurance limit (EL). This paper proposed a mechanistic-empirical PP design method based on this EL concept. The ELs of 12 HMA mixtures were determined using simplified viscoelastic continuum damage testing and the influential factors were comparatively investigated. It was found that HMA mixtures seem to have different EL values based on mix type and test temperatures. There is not just a single EL value that can be used for all mixtures. Thus, default EL criteria for different mixtures under different climatic conditions were developed and incorporated into the Texas Mechanistic-Empirical Flexible Pavement Design System (TxME). As a demonstration and case study, one Texas PP test section with weigh-in-motion traffic data was simulated by TxME. The corresponding TxME inputs/outputs in terms of the PP structure, material properties, traffic loading, environmental conditions, and ELs were demonstrated. The corresponding TxME modeling results were consistent with the actual observed field performance of the in-service PP section.
