is a process of slowly losing the tissue's ability to maintain normal function and causing changes in muscle structure and function. A decrease in strength and muscle mass is a problem that often found in the elderly. Exercise is one of the factors that affect strength and muscle mass. The objective of the research is to compare the strength and muscle mass in elderly women who act and not actively exercise. This study is an observational analytic study with a cross-sectional design analyzed by an independent T-test. The research subjects were taken by purposive sampling, 20 elderly women aged over 60 years who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria were assessed for sports activity, muscle strength, and muscle mass so that it is obtained a sample of 13 elderly who are actively exercising and 7 elderly who are not actively exercising. Handheld muscle strength research data was measured using a handgrip dynamometer, muscle mass was measured using the Bioimpedance Analysis (BIA) method, and exercise habits were taken from the modification of the Baecke Physical Activity questionnaire. The results show that the elderly who were active in exercising with a mean score of muscle strength (10.59 ± 3.62) and muscle mass (34.22 ± 4.62) were higher than those who did not exercise (6.51 ± 3.42) and (29.81 ± 3.39) with p-values of 0.020 and 0.0125. There is a difference between strength and muscle mass in elderly women who are active and not actively exercising.

All forms of charm of the dieng region are able to attract the attention of both domestic people and abroad, with its unique socio-cultural and geographical location which is approximately 2000m above sea level with temperatures reaching 5 degrees Celsius at night and 10 degrees Celsius during the day. It turned out to be a very beautiful natural condition not accompanied by proper healthy behavior, 9 out of 10 households smoke to eliminate the cold, and 4 out of 6 elderly women smoke because of the culture of their ancestors who descended as a cultural heritage signifying that they are strong and respected women. culture like this is certainly very in contrast to the GERMAS (Healthy Community Movement) non-smoking program which was launched in 2016 as an increase in ARI cases from 2009 until 2104 and tends to be stagnant until 2017, as well as various disease events due to smoking such as pulmonary TB, cancer, etc. are also often found in the district Wonosobo. This study aims to look for socio-cultural and geographical influences on smoking behavior in the elderly female sex in the Dieng plateau region wonosobo district. The subjects of this study were elderly women people over 60 who smoke. with a population of 113 elderly, technical. The sample used is total sampling. This type of research is quantitative with cross sectional design as for the analysis of the data used is bivariate analysis (kendall’s tau) where the results are obtained there is a significant influence between social culture on smoking behavior in elderly women (0.001 <0.010), and there is an influence geographic significance of smoking behavior among elderly women (0,000 <0.010). With a significance level of 0,000 (ρ <0.05) so it can be concluded socially culture and geography are related to the smoking behavior of women in the highlands dieng.

Background: Hypertension is a major public health challenge worldwide. It is acknowledged as an important risk factor for cardiovascular morbidity and mortality, particularly among the elderly. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence and pattern of hypertension among the elderly in Osun state, Nigeria. Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional design was used. The study involved 425 respondents aged 60 years and above selected randomly in five local government areas in Osun state. The blood pressure was measured (using a standardized Accoson® type pneumatic mercury sphygmomanometer); weight and height of the respondents were checked and recorded in mmHg, Kg and meters respectively. Data were presented using descriptive statistics, charts and frequency distribution table. Statistical association between categorical variables was assessed using Chi-square method at 5% level of significance. Results: Prevalence of hypertension among elderly was 44.7%. Among other factors, respondents’ body mass index BMI was found significantly associated with hypertension, p=0.009. However, prevalence of hypertension was higher for respondents that were; rural dwellers, female, not living with spouse, without viable source of income and engaging in little or no physical activity compared to their counterparts. Respondent’s BMI and sex were also found to be statistically significantly associated, p=0.011.Conclusions: Prevalence of hypertension was high among the elderly in this study. Health interventions aimed at reducing the diseases should encourage increased physical activities and incorporate financial empowerment schemes particularly for elderly women in rural settings.

The aging process affects the skeletal muscle structure and disability of the musculoskeletal system which resulted in limited and slowed motion. One characteristic of the aging process is a decrease in muscle strength. Muscle strength affects almost all daily activity. Decreased muscle strength can lead to limitations in daily activities, independence and quality of life. This study aims to determine the relationship between handgrip muscles’ strength and level of functional ability among elderly women in Tista, Kerambitan Tabanan. To assess the strength of the relationship and assess the direction of the relationship between the variables. The research design was used cross sectional study with Simple Random Sampling and got 73 samples. The strength of handgrip muscles was measured using Hand-grip dynamometer, while the functional independence level was assessed by Intermediate Activity Daily Living (IADL) questionnaire interview. Result of research by using Spearman correlation test got value P = 0,000 (P <0,05) and Coefficient correlation value equal to 0,489 indicate that there is a significant correlation between handgrip muscles’ strength with functional ability independence level, this relation is positive and medium. In conculsion that handgrip muscles’s strength and level of  functional ability are positively correlated and medium. The stronger the muscle strength of the handgrip, the higher the level of functional ability independence and vice versa. Therefore, handgrip muscle’s strength can be used in identifying disabilities in the elderly. Keywords: elderly, handgrip muscles’ strength, functional capabilities, disability.

Higher daily protein intake, with an emphasis on leucine content, is thought to mitigate age-related anabolic resistance, potentially counteracting age-related morphological and functional declines. The present study investigated potential associations between total daily leucine intake and dependent variables, including quadriceps muscle cross-sectional area (CSA) and maximum dynamic muscle strength (1-RM) in a cohort of healthy free-living older individuals of both sexes (n = 67; 34/33 men/women). Participants performed three 24 h dietary recalls and underwent a magnetic resonance imaging exam followed by 1-RM tests. Our results demonstrate moderate associations between total daily leucine and both quadriceps CSA (r = 0.42; p = 0.004) and 1-RM (r = 0.45; p = 0.001). Furthermore, our exploratory biphasic linear regression analyses, adjusted for sex, age, and protein intake relative to body weight, revealed a plateau for daily leucine intake and muscle mass and muscle strength (~7.6–8.0 g·day−1) in older adults. In conclusion, we demonstrated that total daily leucine intake is associated with muscle mass and strength in healthy older individuals and this association remains after controlling for multiple factors, including overall protein intake. Furthermore, our breakpoint analysis revealed non-linearities and a potential threshold for habitual leucine intake, which may help guide future research on the effects of chronic leucine intake in age-related muscle loss.
