This study determined the effect of feeding trough shapes on the growth performance, carcass characteristics and cost benefit analysis of 180 broiler chickens of two strains (90 birds each of Marshal and Hubbard strains) subjected to circular, rectangular and square-shaped 2 feeding troughs with a surface area of 900 cm each. The broiler chicks were brooded for two weeks and thereafter allotted into six treatment groups of 30 chicks each, consisting of 3 replicates of 10 chicks per replicate. Daily weight gains were recorded and at the 8th week, 3 broiler chickens that were of average weights for each replicate were used for carcass evaluation. Data were analysed using PRO GLM at 5% level of significance. Results showed that feeding trough shapes significantly (P< 0.05) influenced the final weight, feed intake and feed conversion ratio. Birds on circular feeding trough recorded the best feed conversion ratio (2.98±0.03). The feeding trough shape and strain did not significantly (P>0.05) affect the cut-up parts and organs measured. In the interaction between strain and feeding trough, the dressing percentage was significantly (P<0.05) affected, but did not follow any trend. Marshal strain on square feeding trough recorded significantly (P<0.05) lowest production cost (N539.25) while Hubbard strain on circular feeder had the highest cost of N605.46. It was concluded that, in terms of cost of production, the square and rectangular shaped feeding troughs could be adopted.

This study was carried out to determine the effects of in ovo pollen extract injection on growth parameters, ileal histomorphology, and caecal microflora of fasted broiler chicks. In this experiment, 2×2 factorial experimental design was used. One d old, 120 healthy broiler chicks were allocated to 4 treatment groups and 6 replicates (5 mixed sex chicks allocated each replicates). Treatment groups were: A) Pollen extract injection and 24 h fasting (P24); B) Pollen extract injection and 48 h fasting (P48), C) Control, no injection 24 h fasting (C24) and D) Control, no injection 48 h fasting (C48). The experiment lasted 21 days. Live weight, feed consumption, feed conversion ratio were recorded weekly. Ileal histomorphology, caecal microbiota, organ weight were recorded at 21th days of experiment. In ovo pollen extract injection did not affect hatchability rate. At the end of 21 days, in ovo pollen extract injection did not affect feed intake, live weight gain, feed conversion ratio, inner organ development and ileal villi width irrespective to fasting 24 h and 48 h. In ovo pollen extract injection increased ileal villi length, caecal lactic acid bacteria and Saccharomyces Cerevisiae count, decreased caecal Enterobactericaea count. In conclusion, in ovo pollen extract injection can be applied for broiler eggs to improve weight gain, better digestion and gut health.

Xylan oligosaccharides (XOS) can promote proliferation of Pediococcus acidilactic BCC-1, which benefits gut health and growth performance of broilers. The study aimed to investigate the effect of Pediococcus acidilactic BCC-1 (referred to BBC) and XOS on the gut metabolome and microbiota of broilers. The feed conversion ratio of BBC group, XOS group and combined XOS and BBC groups was lower than the control group (P &lt; 0.05). Combined XOS and BBC supplementation (MIX group) elevated butyrate content of the cecum (P &lt; 0.05) and improved ileum morphology by enhancing the ratio of the villus to crypt depth (P &lt; 0.05). The 16S rDNA results indicated that both XOS and BBC induced high abundance of butyric acid bacteria. XOS treatment elevated Clostridium XIVa and the BBC group enriched Anaerotruncus and Faecalibacterium. In contrast, MIX group induced higher relative abundance of Clostridiaceae XIVa, Clostridiaceae XIVb and Lachnospiraceae. Besides, MIX group showed lower abundance of pathogenic bacteria such as Campylobacter. Metabolome analysis showed that all the 3 treatment groups (XOS, BBC and MIX) showed lower concentrations of sorbitol and both XOS and BBC group had higher concentrations of pyridoxine levels than CT group. Besides, XOS and BBC groups enhanced the content of hydroxyphenyl derivatives 4-hydroxyphenylpyruvate 1 and 3-(3-hydroxyphenyl) propionic acid, respectively (P &lt; 0.05). Notably, MIX group enhanced both 4-hydroxyphenylpyruvate 1 and 3-(3-hydroxyphenyl) propionic acid (P &lt; 0.05). Thus, XOS and BBC may have a synergistic role to improve the performance of broilers by modulating gut microbiota and metabolome.

Background: Rapid population growth of human and livestock create increasing demands for food, nutrition security in developing countries and therefore alternative feed resources must be identified and evaluated. This study was carried out to investigate the effects of Moringa oleifera leaf meal (MOLM) on supplemented feed on the growth and carcass quality of broilers in Calabar. Methodology: Fresh leaves of Moringa oleifera were bought and collected from Calabar, Nigeria. The leaves were dried for four days and milled. A total of 40 broiler chicks that 48 day-olds, unsexed (rose 308) were sourced from a reputable poultry farm in Calabar. The broiler chicks were randomly allotted to four treatment groups (A, B, C and D). 0%, 5%, 10% and 15% of MOLM were incorporated into the broiler feed which constituted the four treatment groups. Each group was replicated ten times at 10 birds per replicate. The following parameters were taken including feed intake, weight gain, feed conversion ratio, mortality rate and carcass quality. Data were subjected to statistical analysis. Results: The diet supplemented with 5% of MOLM showed significantly high body weight and followed by 10% of MOLM. Feed intake values were significantly (p<0.05) different across the treatment groups. The weight gain (WG) was statistically similar for group B and C but significantly (p<0.05) different in group D; with birds fed with 10% MOLM based diet having the highest WG. The feed conversion ratio of the birds were not significantly (p>0.05) different in group B and C, but differed significantly (P<0.05) in group D when compared with the control in group A. Carcass characteristics showed higher values of dressing percentage in birds fed supplemented with 10% MOLM (group C). The levels of MOLM were not significantly different in terms of liver weight, heart weight, kidney weight and abdominal fat. Conclusion: Overall, the best significant improvement in the response indices were obtained in birds fed 10% MOLM, while there was a reduced performance of birds feed with 15% MOLM.

A total of 144 day-old Anak 2000 strain of broiler chicks were used in the study. A basal diet was formulated and supplemented at 0, 200, 400, 600 mg kg of MgSO4 to constitute four dietary treatments. The birds were randomly allotted to the four dietary treatment groups and replicated thrice (12 birds per replicate). The performance characteristics, rutrient digestion coefficients, Mg utilization coefficients and haematological and biochemical parameters of the birds were determined Feed conversion ratio, crude protein retention, Mg utilization and blood parameters were highest in birds fed diet containing 400mg kg MgSO4 There were significant (p<0.05) differences in the final body weight, weight gain, Feed Conversion Ratio (FCR), Protein Efficiency Ratio (PER) and crude protein retention Liver Mg content, Mg intake and excretion increased significantly in a dosage dependent manner. Nutrients digestibility increased significantly as Mg levels increased from 0 to 400mg though, digestibility coefficients of Mg were significantly (p>0.05) depressed across treatments. However, serum Mg, Mg digestibility coefficient and tissue Mg residue were similar across treatment groups. The results showed that inclusion of 400mg kg supplemental MgSO4 in practical broiler starter diets resulted in improved performance and nutrients digestibility of the birds.

Lead (Pb) has extensive commercial and industrial use despite of its recognized as health hazard. The therapeutic application of garlic (Allium sativum) was investigated for preventing the toxic effect of lead (Pd) in lead exposed chickens. 350 commercial broiler chickens were grouped into five such as T0, T1, T2, T3 and T4consisting of 70 birds each where T0 served as control. T1 was provided with lead acetate at 100mg/kg body weight, T2 had 100mg/kg lead acetate + 1% garlic supplement, T3 was fed with 100mg/kg lead acetate + 2% garlic supplement and T4 had 100mg/kg lead acetate + 4% garlic supplement for 42 days. Garlic was found to be capable of elimination of lead (Pb). Analysis of variance statistically revealed that significant (P<0.01) lower level of live weight (g), carcass weight (g) and eviscerated fresh carcass weight (%) were 2015.26±49.73, 1124.45±11.67 and 60.63±3.18, respectively in the chickens in group T1 at 42nd day of treatment in comparison to other groups. All garlic treatment groups satisfactorily increased live weight and carcass weight. Following the application of dietary garlic, mean values of live weight (g), carcass weight (g) and eviscerated fresh carcass weight (%) were significantly (P<0.01) increased at 2156.63±74.52, 1455.85±9.21 and 63.96±2.18 in group T3. Feed conversion ratio showed non-significant differences between different groups, but the most significant (P<0.01) FCR values were recorded in T3 among the treatment groups. The aim of this study was to determine the effects of in ovo injection of Saccharomyces cerevisiae (SC) to fertile Ross 308 broiler eggs or dietary supplementation on growth performance, internal organ development, gut histomorphology and cecum microbiota during 14 d of growing period. This study was designed as 2×2 factorial experimental design. Fertile 92 Ross 308 eggs were injected with SC solution 0.2ml at 18d of hatch and 90 eggs non-injected as control, afterward dietary SC supplementation was applied during the 14 d to broiler diet. In this study, 160 broiler chicks were used in four treatment groups at 10 replicate for each treatment group and 4 chicks for each replicates. Treatment groups were A) in ovo SC injection + dietary SC supplementation, B) in ovo SC injection + basal diet, C) no injection + dietary SC supplementation, D) no injection + basal diet as control. Live weight, feed consumption, feed conversion ratio and gut histomorphology, caecum microbiota, internal organ weight were recorded at 14 days of age. Live weight gain increased in C group than in the D group. Feed consumption, feed conversion ratio and internal organ weights were not affected by the treatments. Villi length and villi width increased in A group among the other treatment groups in jejunum, villi length increased in A and C groups among the other groups in ileum. Villi length/villi width ratio increased in A group than in the D group in ileum, was not different in jejunum. LAB counts in caecum were higher in A group than those of C and D groups, but was not different from B group. Enterobactericaea count was lower in A and B group than in the D group, was not different from C group. To conclude, results showed that dietary Saccharomyces cerevisiae supplementation increased broiler growth at 14 day by increasing villi development and improving gut health.

Two experiments were conducted to assess the effect of delayed access to feed after hatch and the potential of two carbohydrate oligomers, trehalose and palatinose, as supplements for early feeding of broiler chickens. A total of 360 and 252 straight run broiler chicks were used in Experiments 1 and 2, respectively, with each involving six treatments and six replicates. The diets were commercial in nature and supplemented with palatinose or trehalose (at 10 or 20 g/kg). Chicks were allowed to access feed within 8 h of hatch or 36 h. In Experiment 2, the supplements were fed at 10 or 20 g/kg diet; the commercial diets was also fed immediately or delayed. One of the diets contains zinc-bacitracin at 50 ppm and fed within 8 h of hatch. Delayed access to feed and water was found to reduce starting weight at placement whereas early access to feed generally improved it. Supplementation with trehalose, in particular led to higher (P < 0.001) 21-day weights than in the other groups although feed conversion ratio was not improved. The benefits of early feeding was demonstrated and trehalose may have some potential as an early feed supplement but further studies are required into how it can be applied at economic levels to minimise production costs down.

In total, 1400 1-day-old male Ross 308 broiler chicks were used to examine the effects of inclusion of alternative carbohydrate and protein sources in prestarter diets and the form of diet on subsequent performance, physiological development and carcass characteristics of broilers. The experimental diets were offered from 1 to 7 days of age and were as follows: control maize–soybean–fish meal diet (CON); maize–soybean meal–casein–dextrose diet (CD); maize–soybean meal–casein-maize starch diet (CS); maize–soybean meal–maize gluten–dextrose diet (GD); and maize–soybean meal–maize gluten–maize starch diet (GS). Each diet was provided in either solid or semi-moist (30% moisture) form, resulting in 10 dietary treatments in a 5 × 2 factorial arrangement. During the first week, a significant (P < 0.05) decrease in feed intake and weight gain was observed in the chicks receiving the CD or the CS diets compared with the chicks receiving the CON diet. Chicks receiving the CON diet also exhibited lower (P < 0.05) feed conversion ratio than did those receiving the CD or the CS diets. The adverse effect of feeding the CD and CS diets on liveweight of the birds was still evident at 21 and 42 days of age (P < 0.05). Chicks on the semi-moist diets consumed less (P < 0.05) feed than those on the solid diets during the first week. Nevertheless, chicks fed the semi-moist diets had higher (P < 0.05) weight gain and exhibited lower (P < 0.05) feed conversion ratio than did those fed solid diets. During the entire period, the highest weight gain and feed intake were observed in chicks receiving the CON prestarter diet in semi-moist form. During the first week, chicks receiving the CD or the CS diet exhibited the lowest (P < 0.05) small intestine weight and length. Conversely, at the age of 21 days, these chicks had higher (P < 0.05) small intestine weight than did the other chicks. It can be concluded that using a maize–soybean–fish meal-based prestarter diet in semi-moist form improves chick development and positively affects growth performance.

A total of 300 one day old unsexed broiler chicks were divided into threedietary groups which were: -T1: Un-treated control.T2: Poultrygrow 250 treated group.T3: Cr-Yeast treated group.Results have shown that the addition of Poultrygrow 250 and Cr-Yeasthave significantly (p < 0.05) improved the performance of broilers express inweight gain and feed conversion ratio compared with control group. The studyshowed an increase in red blood cell and hemoglobin and reduce in hetrophil /Lymphocyte ratio.It was concluded that the supplementation of poultrygrow 250and Cr-Yeast in the diet of broiler chickens could improve the performance ofthe birds.

Testosterone has been reported to have anabolic influence on various organs of animals. Thus, an experiment was carried out to investigate the influence of crude testosterone in bovine testicular fluid (BTF) on the growth performance of broiler chickens. One hundred and twenty-five broiler chicks (Abore Acre) were used. They were raised for one week and randomly allotted into five treatments consisted of five replicates (five chicks per replicate) under the intensive management system. Four different levels; 25mL, 50mL, 75mL, and 100mL of bovine testicular fluid per litre of water were administered to the birds, while the control birds were offered ordinary water. Feeds (broiler starter and finisher diets) were provided ad libitum on daily basis at weeks 2-4 and 5-8, respectively and clean water was given at free choice throughout the period of the study. Average daily feed intake (ADFI), average daily water intake (ADWI), average daily weight gain (ADWG) per bird, and the feed conversion ratio (FCR) of the birds were determined. At week seven blood was sampled to assay for level of the luteinizing hormone (LH), follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), and testosterone. The results indicated that ALW and the ADWG of the T5 birds (1850.00g/bird and 43.79g/bird, respectively) were significantly (p<0.05) higher than birds in T1, T2, T3, and T4, while the ADFI of T1, T3 and T4 birds (90.33g/bird, 94.09g/bird, 90.39g/bird respectively) were significantly (P < 0.05) higher than T2 (84.60g/bird) and T5 (84.60g/bird). ADWI of the T5 and T4 birds (101.01mL/bird, and 98.68mL/bird, respectively) were significantly (P < 0.05) higher than TI (82.13mL/bird), T2 (86.50mL/bird) and T3 (93.01mL/bird) birds. Birds administered 100mL of BTF/litre (T5) had the best percentage carcass yield and feed conversion ratio of 76.60% and 2.11 respectively, among the treatments T1, T2, T3, and T4 birds. The result of the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay of the serum concentration of the sex hormones showed that the expression of the serum testosterone increased as the inclusion levels of the Bovine testicular fluid increased with birds on T5 having significantly (P < 0.05) higher values (3.64 nmol/L) than those on the control (2.60 nmol/L). However, testosterone levels in T2 (3.18 nmol/L), T3 (3.24 nmol/L) and T4 (3.40 nmol/L) was not significantly different from T5. This study suggests that 100ml of bovine testicular fluid per liter of the drinking water can be used as a growth promoter for broiler chickens.
