Germination data are analyzed by several methods, which can be mainly classified as germination indexes and traditional regression techniques to fit non-linear parametric functions to the temporal sequence of cumulative germination. However, due to the nature of germination data, often different from other biological data, the abovementioned methods may present some limits, especially when ungerminated seeds are present at the end of an experiment. A class of methods that could allow addressing these issues is represented by the so-called “time-to-event analysis”, better known in other scientific fields as “survival analysis” or “reliability analysis”. There is relatively little literature about the application of these methods to germination data, and some reviews dealt only with parts of the possible approaches such as either non-parametric and semi-parametric or parametric ones. The present study aims to give a contribution to the knowledge about the reliability of these methods by assessing all the main approaches to the same germination data provided by sugar beet (Beta vulgaris L.) seeds cohorts. The results obtained confirmed that although the different approaches present advantages and disadvantages, they could generally represent a valuable tool to analyze germination data providing parameters whose usefulness depends on the purpose of the research.

Abstract. Interdisciplinary frameworks for studying natural hazards and their temporal trends have an important potential in data generation for risk assessment, land use planning, and therefore the sustainable management of resources. This paper focuses on the adjustments required because of the wide variety of scientific fields involved in the reconstruction and characterisation of flood events for the past 1000 years. The aim of this paper is to describe various methodological aspects of the study of flood events in their historical dimension, including the critical evaluation of old documentary and instrumental sources, flood-event classification and hydraulic modelling, and homogeneity and quality control tests. Standardized criteria for flood classification have been defined and applied to the Isère and Drac floods in France, from 1600 to 1950, and to the Ter, the Llobregat and the Segre floods, in Spain, from 1300 to 1980. The analysis on the Drac and Isère data series from 1600 to the present day showed that extraordinary and catastrophic floods were not distributed uniformly in time. However, the largest floods (general catastrophic floods) were homogeneously distributed in time within the period 1600–1900. No major flood occurred during the 20th century in these rivers. From 1300 to the present day, no homogeneous behaviour was observed for extraordinary floods in the Spanish rivers. The largest floods were uniformly distributed in time within the period 1300–1900, for the Segre and Ter rivers.

Abstract This article will argue that the term ‘conscientious objection’ can be applied beyond its associations with military service and reproductive healthcare, to explain the situation of a registrar of marriages, who, in carrying out his or her employment, has an objection based on religious beliefs to a specific aspect of his or her job requirements—namely the conduct of civil partnerships. It is argued that this objection is worthy of recognition and potential accommodation because of the weight of the burden which conscience imposes on the registrar, a burden that outweighs the case against recognition. The article then turns to examine critically the options for accommodating such a conscientious objection within United Kingdom law to the extent of considering three broad options, each with attendant advantages and disadvantages. Finally the article comes to the conclusion that re-configuring discrimination law might be the most pragmatic solution.

AbstractIn the first part of the paper Rawls’ conception of a ,reflective equilibrium" with our „considered moral judgements“ is criticized. Moral judgements cannot form a court of appeal for the justification of moral principles, since they are themselves in need of justification. An analysis of the meaning of the sentences in which moral judgements are expressed is called for in order to establish their method of justification. In the second part of the paper the consequence which Rawls' repudiation of semantic analysis has had for his conception of the „original position“ is discussed. In retrogressive extension of his four-stage-sequence a zero-stage is postulated which represents the moral point of view. At this stage the reasons would have to be given for adopting the original position and for conceiving it with just those characteristics that Rawls has assumed. Only thus can the advantages and disadvantages of these characteristics be analytically assessed.

High rates of cancer incidence and mortality from malignant neoplasms remains an urgent health problem. The development of the most effective therapeutic algorithms is required to improve the survival of cancer patients. An important condition for the discovery of new anticancer drugs and their translation into clinical practice involves the ability to model tumor growth, reproduce the characteristics of human disease, and evaluate measurable effects of pharmacological substances in laboratory facilities. Xenograft models established by direct implantation of fresh tumor tissue samples from individual patients into immunodeficient mice are considered suitable for both preclinical trials and for solving fundamental problems in oncology. The review highlights the significance of patient-derived xenograft models as a platform with high predictive value and the prerequisites that make them the preferred tool for research in cancer biology. The most important methodological aspects in the creation of these models are considered. Methods for obtaining and preparing biological tumor samples for xenotransplantation are discussed. The significance of the immune status, as well as the phenotypic and genetic characteristics of recipient animals, is described. The article presents the limitations of animal models associated with their immunodeficiency status and ways to overcome them. The principles for choosing xenotransplantation sites (heterotopic and orthotopic) and their advantages and disadvantages are discussed. In conclusion, we emphasize the need to continue the work on optimizing PDX (Patient-Derived Xenograft) models to overcome their limitations and to obtain the most reliable and valuable research results in oncology.

The purpose of the study is actualized by the fact that progress in the field of computer technology and robotics allows radically changing the idea of teaching computer science to schoolchildren, or rather programming in a modern secondary school, realizing one of the most important tasks facing the education system today. The scientific novelty of the study lies in the fact that these achievements allow updating traditional teaching methods, making them much more useful and modern. Nowadays, students have the opportunity to study various programming languages at school and at the same time, using the developed resources, observe the process of their execution by specially created robots, which can develop the student's desire to study further and give motivation to study the academic discipline. The practical significance of the work lies in the fact that one of such projects containing educational resources and allowing a different look at modern computer science lessons is LEGO and ROBBO. The advantages and disadvantages of traditional methods of teaching programming languages in high school are analyzed in the study. Also, the advantages of learning programming with LEGO and ROBBO are revealed, methodological recommendations for using the LEGO and ROBBO programming environment are presented, the capabilities of the LEGO project and ROBBO are described, and their main elements are characterized.
