Multiscale bedform interactions in a lowland river

<p>Multiscale bedforms exist in diverse environments. Globally, trains of small secondary bedforms have been observed in fluvial systems, where they are superimposed on larger fluvial dunes. Yet, we understand little about the morphodynamics of these superimposed bedforms and their interaction with larger bedform scales. It is unclear what their impact is on the overall system functioning, for example in terms of sediment transport and (near-bed) flow dynamics.</p><p>Bed elevation data with a high spatiotemporal resolution, obtained during a dedicated field campaign in the river Waal, a main distributary of the river Rhine, have shed light on the morphodynamics of fluvial dunes and superimposed bedforms. Results from the study indicate that superimposed bedforms persist over low-angled lee sides, whereas they disintegrate over lee side angles steeper than . The transport of bed sediment associated with secondary bedform migration is significant. The small bedforms migrate with a celerity that is an order of magnitude larger, from which a transport rate can be inferred that equals and in some sections even exceeds the transport associated with primary river dunes. Where superimposed bedforms disintegrate at or downstream of the dune lee slope, superimposed bedforms fully contribute to the migration of the primary dune. Where they persist over the dune lee side however, the sediment transport inferred from superimposed bedforms over the dune crest might partly contribute to primary dune migration. A significant portion, however, will also be transported over the dune lee side and trough and form an additional transport component. Both the persistence of the superimposed bedforms on the primary dune lee and their size and shape, appear to depend on the primary dune morphology. This is likely related to the flow structure—i.e. the presence of flow separation and the properties of the downstream, turbulent wake—that depends on the primary lee slope angle and height.</p><p>In our current work, we build upon this study, and  analyse the morphodynamics of these two bedform scales across a much larger spatial and temporal scale. Small-scale superimposed bedforms appear to be ubiquitous in the river Waal and can be observed across a range of discharge conditions. Our analysis quantifies and predicts when secondary bedform occur and persist over primary lee sides. We further aim to understand how secondary bedform morphology depends on primary dune characteristics as well as environmental conditions such as (changes in) discharge, and the bed sediment properties. In relation to that, we question to what extent superimposed bedforms in turn affect the primary dune morphology, their migration celerity and associated bedload transport.</p><p> </p>

AbstractAt river bifurcations water and sediment is divided among the downstream branches. Prediction of the sediment transport rate and division thereof at bifurcations is of utmost importance for understanding the evolution of the bifurcates for short-term management purposes and for long-term fluvial plain development. However, measured sediment transports in rivers rarely show a uniquely determined relation with hydrodynamic parameters. Commonly a hysteresis is observed of transport rate as a function of discharge or shear stress which cannot be explained with the standard sediment transport predictor approach. The aim of this paper is to investigate the causes of hysteresis at a bifurcation of the lower Rhine river, a meandering river with stable banks, large dunes during flood, and poorly sorted bed sediment. The hydrodynamics and bed sediment transport were measured in detail during a discharge wave with a recurrence interval larger than 10 years. Surprisingly, the hysteresis in bedload against discharge was in the opposite direction upstream and downstream of the bifurcation. The upstream clockwise hysteresis is caused by the lagging development of dunes during the flood. The counter-clockwise hysteresis downstream of the bifurcation is caused by a combination of processes in addition to dune lagging, namely 1) formation of a scour zone upstream of the bifurcation, causing a migrating fine sediment wave, and 2) vertical bed sorting of the bed sediment by dunes with avalanching lee-sides, together leading to surface-sediment fining and increased transport during and after the flood. These findings lead to challenges for future morphological models, particularly for bifurcations, which will have to deal with varying discharge, sediment sorting in the channel bed, lagging dunes and related hydraulic roughness.

Describing bedload transport as a stochastic process is an idea that emerged in the 1930s with the pioneering work of Einstein. For a long time, the stochastic approach attracted marginal attention, but the situation has radically changed over the last decade with the recent advances in the theory of bedload transport. In parallel, the implementation of bedload monitoring techniques at high temporal resolution has produced a wealth of interesting results showing, among other things, that classic empirical bedload transport equations do not capture neither the mean behavior of sediment transport rates qs nor its order of magnitude, especially at low sediment transport rates (a case that is most frequent in mountain streams). We have developed a stochastic model, which takes inspiration from population dynamics and provides a stochastic partial differential equation for the number of moving particles. Taking the ensemble average leads to a fairly simple advection diffusion equation for particle activity (i.e., the number of moving particles per unit streambed area). The model has a number of unique features. For instance, it yields the probability distribution of the bedload transport rate and predicts bedform formation for a wide range of Froude numbers.

For streams draining urban catchments, sediment transport capacity is the key driver of physical impacts including bed sediment removal and channel incision. The main unanswered question is the relative role of flow alteration compared to sediment supply in influencing sediment transport capacity. With this objective, we computed sand and gravel bed sediment transport capacity using the Wilcock and Kenworthy two-fraction bedload transport relation for nine streams in catchments covering a gradient of urbanisation. Computations were done for typical natural bed surface material, based on conditions in the least urban study streams. We compared transport capacity distributions and cumulative transport capacity over one-year between the streams. Transport capacity was up to three orders of magnitude higher in urban streams than in forested-catchment streams. This was driven overwhelmingly by the urbanisation-induced alterations to the flow regime, with only minor feedback from channel form changes. Transport capacity was two to three orders of magnitude greater than measured bedload transport in all but the least urban streams. This excess bedload transport capacity mobilises and removes bed sediment, produces channel incision and enlargement and reduces channel complexity. Rebalancing transport capacity with sediment supply therefore requires significant flow mitigation towards pre-urban conditions. Other responses, which may theoretically help to regain this balance – channel widening, grade control, increasing roughness, sediment augmentation – are either inappropriate or only feasible following flow mitigation measures.

Unusual shore-normal and barred-like rhythmic features were found in Camposoto Beach (Bay of Cádiz, SW Spain) during a monitoring program using unmanned aerial systems (UAS). They appeared in the backshore and persisted for 6 months (October 2017–March 2018). Their characteristics and possible formation mechanism were investigated analyzing: (1) UAS-derived high-resolution digital elevation models (DEMs), (2) hydrodynamic conditions, and (3) sediment samples. The results revealed that the features did not migrate spatially, that their wavelength was well predicted by the edge wave theory, and that they shared characteristics with both small-scale low-energy finger bars (e.g., geometry/appearance and amplitude) and swash cusps (e.g., wavelength, seaward circulation pattern, and finer and better sorted material in the runnels with respect to the crests). Our findings pinpoint to highly organized swash able to reach the backshore during spring tides under low-energy and accretionary conditions as well as backwash enhanced by conditions of water-saturated sediment. This study demonstrates that rhythmic features can appear under different modalities and beach locations than the ones observed up to date, and that their unusual nature may be attributed to the low spatiotemporal resolution of the traditional coastal surveying methods in comparison with novel technologies such as UAS.

AbstractThe combination of electrophysiology and optogenetics enables the exploration of how the brain operates down to a single neuron and its network activity. Neural probes are in vivo invasive devices that integrate sensors and stimulation sites to record and manipulate neuronal activity with high spatiotemporal resolution. State-of-the-art probes are limited by tradeoffs involving their lateral dimension, number of sensors, and ability to access independent stimulation sites. Here, we realize a highly scalable probe that features three-dimensional integration of small-footprint arrays of sensors and nanophotonic circuits to scale the density of sensors per cross-section by one order of magnitude with respect to state-of-the-art devices. For the first time, we overcome the spatial limit of the nanophotonic circuit by coupling only one waveguide to numerous optical ring resonators as passive nanophotonic switches. With this strategy, we achieve accurate on-demand light localization while avoiding spatially demanding bundles of waveguides and demonstrate the feasibility with a proof-of-concept device and its scalability towards high-resolution and low-damage neural optoelectrodes.

ABSTRACTWe have developed a two-dimensional coupled glacier–fjord model, which runs automatically using Elmer/Ice and MITgcm software packages, to investigate the magnitude of submarine melting along a vertical glacier front and its potential influence on glacier calving and front position changes. We apply this model to simulate the Hansbreen glacier–Hansbukta proglacial–fjord system, Southwestern Svalbard, during the summer of 2010. The limited size of this system allows us to resolve some of the small-scale processes occurring at the ice–ocean interface in the fjord model, using a 0.5 s time step and a 1 m grid resolution near the glacier front. We use a rich set of field data spanning the period April–August 2010 to constrain, calibrate and validate the model. We adjust circulation patterns in the fjord by tuning subglacial discharge inputs that best match observed temperature while maintaining a compromise with observed salinity, suggesting a convectively driven circulation in Hansbukta. The results of our model simulations suggest that both submarine melting and crevasse hydrofracturing exert important controls on seasonal frontal ablation, with submarine melting alone not being sufficient for reproducing the observed patterns of seasonal retreat. Both submarine melt and calving rates accumulated along the entire simulation period are of the same order of magnitude, ~100 m. The model results also indicate that changes in submarine melting lag meltwater production by 4–5 weeks, which suggests that it may take up to a month for meltwater to traverse the englacial and subglacial drainage network.

AbstractThe shallow, gently sloping, sandy-silty seabed of the Venetian coast (Italy) is studded by a number of outcropping rocky systems of different size encouraging the development of peculiar zoobenthic biocenoses with considerably higher biodiversity indexes compared to neighbouring areas. In order to protect and enhance the growth of settling communities, artificial monolithic reefs were deployed close to the most important formations, providing further nesting sites and mechanical hindrance to illegal trawl fishing.In this framework, a multi-step and multi-scale numerical modelling activity was carried out to predict the perturbations induced by the presence of artificial structures on sediment transport over the outcroppings and their implications on turbidity and water quality. After having characterized wave and current circulation climate at the sub-basin scale over a reference year, a set of small scale simulations was carried out to describe the effects of a single monolith under different geometries and hydrodynamic forcings, encompassing the conditions likely occurring at the study sites. A dedicated tool was then developed to compose the information contained in the small-scale database into realistic deployment configurations, and applied in four protected outcroppings identified as test sites. With reference to these cases, under current meteomarine climate the application highlighted a small and localised increase in suspended sediment concentration, suggesting that the implemented deployment strategy is not likely to produce harmful effects on turbidity close to the outcroppings.In a broader context, the activity is oriented at the tuning of a flexible instrument for supporting the decision-making process in benthic environments of outstanding environmental relevance, especially in the Integrated Coastal Zone Management or Maritime Spatial Planning applications. The dissemination of sub-basin scale modelling results via the THREDDS Data Server, together with an user-friendly software for composing single-monolith runs and a graphical interface for exploring the available data, significantly improves the quantitative information collection and sharing among scientists, stakeholders and policy-makers.

AbstractSpatio-temporal variations of the recently determined accumulation rate are investigated using ground-penetrating radar (GPR) measurements and firn-core studies. The study area is located on Ritscherflya in western Dronning Maud Land, Antarctica, at an elevation range 1400–1560 m. Accumulation rates are derived from internal reflection horizons (IRHs), tracked with GPR, which are connected to a dated firn core. GPR-derived internal layer depths show small relief along a 22 km profile on an ice flowline. Average accumulation rates are about 190 kg m−2 a−1 (1980–2005) with spatial variability (1σ) of 5% along the GPR profile. The interannual variability obtained from four dated firn cores is one order of magnitude higher, showing 1σ standard deviations around 30%. Mean temporal variations of GPRderived accumulation rates are of the same magnitude or even higher than spatial variations. Temporal differences between 1980–90 and 1990–2005, obtained from two dated IRHs along the GPR profile, indicate temporally non-stationary processes, linked to spatial variations. Comparison with similarly obtained accumulation data from another coastal area in central Dronning Maud Land confirms this observation. Our results contribute to understanding spatio-temporal variations of the accumulation processes, necessary for the validation of satellite data (e.g. altimetry studies and gravity missions such as Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE)).

A spatially integrated one-dimensional numerical model of inlet bay hydraulics has been combined with a simple sediment transport model to investigate selected tidal inlet-bay system characteristics. A parametric study has been performed using the models to determine the effect of various factors on the net direction and order of magnitude of inlet channel flow and sediment transport. Factors considered include astronomical tide type, storm surge height and duration, variation in bay surface area, time-dependent channel friction factor, and the addition of a second inlet connecting the bay and sea.
