<p>Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) have revolutionized positioning, navigation, and timing, becoming a common part of our everyday life.  A geophysical key application is atmospheric water vapor monitoring using GNSS ground station data. GNSS water vapor data, derived from regional ground networks hereby close gaps in the established meteorological observing systems. No other observing system provides data with such high temporal and spatial resolution. The data from European GNSS networks are therefore already widely operationally used to improve regional weather forecasts in several countries. However, the impact of the currently provided data products to the forecast systems is still limited due to the limited atmospheric information content, which is provided by the currently used Zenith Total Delay (ZTD) data.</p><p>In this talk we introduce the new project EGMAP (Exploitation of GNSS tropospheric gradients for severe weather Monitoring And Prediction). This project will pioneer the development and usage of next generation data products; tropospheric gradients. The new data products, developed and provided within the project, are expected to improve the impact of the currently provided GNSS data to weather forecast systems. The main innovations, which will be addressed by the project are: (1) Developments to provide high quality ZTDs and tropospheric gradients in near-real-time for the German SAPOS network; (2) Developments to make use of ZTDs and tropospheric gradients in numerical weather prediction, i.e., implement operators in the variational/ensemble data assimilation system of the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model; (3) Impact studies with the state of the art numerical weather model. In this talk we provide an overview and the current status of the project.</p>

Abstract. Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) meteorology is an established operational service providing hourly updated GNSS tropospheric products to the National Meteorologic Services (NMS) in Europe. In the last decade through the ground-based GNSS network densification and new processing strategies like Precise Point Positioning (PPP) it has become possible to obtain sub-hourly tropospheric products for monitoring severe weather events. In this work one year (January–December 2013) of sub-hourly GNSS tropospheric products (Zenith Total Delay) are computed using the PPP strategy for seven stations in Bulgaria. In order to take advantage of the sub-hourly GNSS data to derive Integrated Water Vapour (IWV) surface pressure and temperature with similar temporal resolution is required. As the surface observations are on 3 hourly basis the first step is to compare the surface pressure and temperature from numerical weather prediction model Weather Forecasting and Research (WRF) with observations at three synoptic stations in Bulgaria. The mean difference between the two data-sets for 1) surface pressure is less than 0.5 hPa and the correlation is over 0.989, 2) temperature the largest mean difference is 1.1 °C and the correlation coefficient is over 0.957 and 3) IWV mean difference is in range 0.1–1.1 mm. The evaluation of WRF on annual bases shows IWV underestimation between 0.5 and 1.5 mm at five stations and overestimation at Varna and Rozhen. Varna and Rozhen have also much smaller correlation 0.9 and 0.76. The study of the monthly IWV variation shows that at those locations the GNSS IWV has unexpected drop in April and March respectively. The reason for this drop is likely problems with station raw data. At the remaining 5 stations a very good agreement between GNSS and WRF is observed with high correlation during the cold part of 2013 i.e. March, October and December (0.95) and low correlation during the warm part of 2013 i.e. April to August (below 0.9). The diurnal cycle of the WRF model shows a dry bias in the range of 0.5-1.5 mm. Between 00 and 01 UTC the GNSS IWV tends to be underestimate IWV which is likely due to the processing window used. The precipitation efficiency from GNSS and WRF show very good agreement on monthly bases with a maximum in May-June and minimum in August–September. The annual precipitation efficiency in 2013 at Lovech and Burgas is about 6 %.

Abstract Zenith total delay (ZTD) observations derived from ground-based GPS receivers have been assimilated operationally into the Met Office North Atlantic and European (NAE) numerical weather prediction (NWP) model since 2007. Assimilation trials were performed using the Met Office NAE NWP model at both 12- and 24-km resolution to assess the impact of ZTDs on forecasts. ZTDs were found generally to increase relative humidity in the analysis, increasing the humidity bias compared to radiosonde observations, which persisted through the forecasts at some vertical levels. Improvements to cloud forecasts were also identified. Assimilation of ZTDs using both three-dimensional and four-dimensional variational data assimilation (3D-Var/4D-Var) was investigated, and it is found that assimilation at 4D-Var does not deliver any clear benefit over 3D-Var in the periods studied with the NAE model. This paper summarizes the methods used to assimilate ZTDs at the Met Office and presents the results of impact trials performed prior to operational assimilation. Future improvements to the assimilation methods are discussed.

<p>Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) have revolutionized positioning, navigation, and timing, becoming a common part of our everyday life. Aside from these well-known civilian and commercial applications, GNSS is currently established as a powerful and versatile observation tool for geosciences. An outstanding application in this context is the operational monitoring of atmospheric water vapor with high spatiotemporal resolution. The water vapor is the most abundant greenhouse gas, which accounts for about 70% of atmospheric warming and plays a key role in the atmospheric energy exchange. The precise knowledge of its highly variable spatial and temporal distribution is a precondition for precise modeling of the atmospheric state as a base for numerical weather forecasts especially with focus to the strong precipitation and severe weather events.</p><p>The data from European GNSS networks are widely operationally used to improve regional weather forecasts in several countries. However, the impact of the currently provided data products to the forecast systems is still limited due to the exclusively focusing on GPS-only based data products; to the limited atmospheric information content, which is provided mostly in the zenith direction and to the time delay between measurement and providing the data products, which is currently about one hour.</p><p>AMUSE is a recent research project, funded by the DFG (German Research Council) and performed in close cooperation of TUB, GFZ and DWD during 2020-2022. The project foci are the major limitations of currently operationally used generation of GNSS-based water vapor data. AMUSE will pioneer the development of next generation data products. Main addressed innovations are:  1) Developments to provide multi-GNSS instead of GPS-only data, including GLONASS, Galileo and BeiDou; 2) Developments to provide high quality slant observations, containing water vapor information along the line-of-sight from the respective ground stations; 3) Developments to shorten the delay between measurements and the provision of the products to the meteorological services.</p><p>This GNSS-focused work of AMUSE will be complemented by the contribution of German Weather Service DWD to investigate in detail and to quantify the forecast improvement, which can be reached by the new generation GNSS-based meteorology data. Several dedicated forecast experiments will be conducted with focus on one of the most challenging issues, the precipitation forecast in case of severe weather events. These studies will support the future assimilation of the new generation data to the regional forecast system of DWD and potentially also to other European weather services.</p>

This paper discusses the in near–real time processing of Global Navigation Satellite System observations at the Department of Theoretical Geodesy at the Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava. Hourly observations from Central Europe are processed with 30 minutes delay to provide tropospheric products. The time series and maps of tropospheric products over Slovakia are published online. Zenith total delay is the most important tropospheric parameter. Its comparison with zenith total delays from IGS and E–GVAP solutions and the validation of estimated zenith total delay error over year 2018 have been made. Zenith total delays are used to improve initial conditions of numerical weather prediction model by the means of the three–dimensional variational analysis at Slovak Hydrometeorological Institute. The impact of assimilation of different observation types into numerical weather prediction model is discussed. The case study was performed to illustrate the impact of zenith total delay assimilation on the precipitation forecast.

Abstract. The GNSS data assimilation is currently widely discussed in the literature with respect to the various applications for meteorology and numerical weather models. Data assimilation combines atmospheric measurements with knowledge of atmospheric behavior as codified in computer models. With this approach, the “best” estimate of current conditions consistent with both information sources is produced. Some approaches also allow assimilating the non-prognostic variables, including remote sensing data from radar or GNSS (global navigation satellite system). These techniques are named variational data assimilation schemes and are based on a minimization of the cost function, which contains the differences between the model state (background) and the observations. The variational assimilation is the first choice for data assimilation in the weather forecast centers, however, current research is consequently looking into use of an iterative, filtering approach such as an extended Kalman filter (EKF). This paper shows the results of assimilation of the GNSS data into numerical weather prediction (NWP) model WRF (Weather Research and Forecasting). The WRF model offers two different variational approaches: 3DVAR and 4DVAR, both available through the WRF data assimilation (WRFDA) package. The WRFDA assimilation procedure was modified to correct for bias and observation errors. We assimilated the zenith total delay (ZTD), precipitable water (PW), radiosonde (RS) and surface synoptic observations (SYNOP) using a 4DVAR assimilation scheme. Three experiments have been performed: (1) assimilation of PW and ZTD for May and June 2013, (2) assimilation of PW alone; PW, with RS and SYNOP; ZTD alone; and finally ZTD, with RS and SYNOP for 5–23 May 2013, and (3) assimilation of PW or ZTD during severe weather events in June 2013. Once the initial conditions were established, the forecast was run for 24 h. The major conclusion of this study is that for all analyzed cases, there are two parameters significantly changed once GNSS data are assimilated in the WRF model using GPSPW operator and these are moisture fields and rain. The GNSS observations improves forecast in the first 24 h, with the strongest impact starting from a 9 h lead time. The relative humidity forecast in a vertical profile after assimilation of ZTD shows an over 20 % decrease of mean error starting from 2.5 km upward. Assimilation of PW alone does not bring such a spectacular improvement. However, combination of PW, SYNOP and radiosonde improves distribution of humidity in the vertical profile by maximum of 12 %. In the three analyzed severe weather cases PW always improved the rain forecast and ZTD always reduced the humidity field bias. Binary rain analysis shows that GNSS parameters have significant impact on the rain forecast in the class above 1 mm h−1.

Three experiments have been performed: (1) assimilation of PW and ZTD for May and June of 2013, (2) assimilation of: PW alone; PW, with RS and SYNOP; ZTD alone; and finally ZTD, with RS and SYNOP for 5–23 May 2013, and (3) assimilation of PW or ZTD during severe weather events in June 2013. Once the initial conditions were established, the forecast was run for 48 hours. The obtained WRF predictions are validated against surface meteorological measurements, including air temperature, humidity, wind speed, and rainfall rate. Results from the first experiment (May and June 2013) show that the assimilation of GNSS data (both ZTD and PW) have positive impact on the rain and humidity forecast. However, the assimilation of ZTD is more successful, and brings substantial reduction of errors in rain forecast by 8 %, and a 20 % improvement in bias of humidity forecast, but it has a slight negative impact on temperature bias and wind speed. Second experiment (5–23 May 2013) reveals that the PW or ZTD assimilation leads to a similar reduction of errors as in the first experiment, moreover, adding SYNOP and RS observations to the assimilation does not improve the humidity or rain forecasts (in the 48 h forecast) but reduces errors in the wind speed and temperature. Furthermore, short term predictions (up to 24 h) of rain and humidity are better when SYNOP and RS observations are assimilated. The impact of assimilation of ZTD and PW in severe weather cases is mixed, one out of three investigated cases shows positive impact of GNSS data, whereas other two neutral or negative.

The neutral atmospheric delay is one of the major error sources in Space Geodesy techniques such as Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS), and its modeling for high accuracy applications can be challenging. Improving the modeling of the atmospheric delays (hydrostatic and non-hydrostatic) also leads to a more accurate and precise precipitable water vapor estimation (PWV), mostly in real-time applications, where models play an important role, since numerical weather prediction models cannot be used for real-time processing or forecasting. This study developed an improved version of the Hourly Global Pressure and Temperature (HGPT) model, the HGPT2. It is based on 20 years of ERA5 reanalysis data at full spatial (0.25° × 0.25°) and temporal resolution (1-h). Apart from surface air temperature, surface pressure, zenith hydrostatic delay, and weighted mean temperature, the updated model also provides information regarding the relative humidity, zenith non-hydrostatic delay, and precipitable water vapor. The HGPT2 is based on the time-segmentation concept and uses the annual, semi-annual, and quarterly periodicities to calculate the relative humidity anywhere on the Earth’s surface. Data from 282 moisture sensors located close to GNSS stations during 1 year (2020) were used to assess the model coefficients. The HGPT2 meteorological parameters were used to process 35 GNSS sites belonging to the International GNSS Service (IGS) using the GAMIT/GLOBK software package. Results show a decreased root-mean-square error (RMSE) and bias values relative to the most used zenith delay models, with a significant impact on the height component. The HGPT2 was developed to be applied in the most diverse areas that can significantly benefit from an ERA5 full-resolution model.

Abstract The Trident Warrior observational field campaign conducted off the U.S. mid-Atlantic coast in July 2013 included the deployment of an unmanned aerial system (UAS) with several payloads on board for atmospheric and oceanic observation. These UAS observations, spanning seven flights over 5 days in the lowest 1550 m above mean sea level, were assimilated into a three-dimensional variational data assimilation (DA) system [the Naval Research Laboratory Atmospheric Variational Data Assimilation System (NAVDAS)] used to generate analyses for a numerical weather prediction model [the Coupled Ocean–Atmosphere Mesoscale Prediction System (COAMPS)] with a coupled ocean model [the Naval Research Laboratory Navy Coastal Ocean Model (NCOM)]. The impact of the assimilated UAS observations on short-term atmospheric prediction performance is evaluated and quantified. Observations collected from 50 radiosonde launches during the campaign adjacent to the UAS flight paths serve as model forecast verification. Experiments reveal a substantial reduction of model bias in forecast temperature and moisture profiles consistently throughout the campaign period due to the assimilation of UAS observations. The model error reduction is most substantial in the vicinity of the inversion at the top of the model-estimated boundary layer. Investigations reveal a consistent improvement to prediction of the vertical position, strength, and depth of the boundary layer inversion. The relative impact of UAS observations is explored further with experiments of systematic denial of data streams from the NAVDAS DA system and removal of individual measurement sources on the UAS platform.

AbstractAnalysis of the cloud components in numerical weather prediction models using advanced data assimilation techniques has been a prime topic in recent years. In this research, the variational data assimilation (DA) system for the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) Model (WRFDA) is further developed to assimilate satellite cloud products that will produce the cloud liquid water and ice water analysis. Observation operators for the cloud liquid water path and cloud ice water path are developed and incorporated into the WRFDA system. The updated system is tested by assimilating cloud liquid water path and cloud ice water path observations from Global Geostationary Gridded Cloud Products at NASA. To assess the impact of cloud liquid/ice water path data assimilation on short-term regional numerical weather prediction (NWP), 3-hourly cycling data assimilation and forecast experiments with and without the use of the cloud liquid/ice water paths are conducted. It is shown that assimilating cloud liquid/ice water paths increases the accuracy of temperature, humidity, and wind analyses at model levels between 300 and 150 hPa after 5 cycles (15 h). It is also shown that assimilating cloud liquid/ice water paths significantly reduces forecast errors in temperature and wind at model levels between 300 and 150 hPa. The precipitation forecast skills are improved as well. One reason that leads to the improved analysis and forecast is that the 3-hourly rapid update cycle carries over the impact of cloud information from the previous cycles spun up by the WRF Model.

AbstractThe complex terrain at the intersection of the Mohawk and Hudson valleys of New York has an impact on the development and evolution of severe convection in the region. Specifically, previous research has concluded that terrain-channeled flow in the Mohawk and Hudson valleys likely contributes to increased low-level wind shear and instability in the valleys during severe weather events such as the historic 31 May 1998 event that produced a strong (F3) tornado in Mechanicville, New York.The goal of this study is to further examine the impact of terrain channeling on severe convection by analyzing a high-resolution WRF model simulation of the 31 May 1998 event. Results from the simulation suggest that terrain-channeled flow resulted in the localized formation of an enhanced low-level moisture gradient, resembling a dryline, at the intersection of the Mohawk and Hudson valleys. East of this boundary, the environment was characterized by stronger low-level wind shear and greater low-level moisture and instability, increasing tornadogenesis potential. A simulated supercell intensified after crossing the boundary, as the larger instability and streamwise vorticity of the low-level inflow was ingested into the supercell updraft. These results suggest that terrain can have a key role in producing mesoscale inhomogeneities that impact the evolution of severe convection. Recognition of these terrain-induced boundaries may help in anticipating where the risk of severe weather may be locally enhanced.
