Abstract. What future for tourism in the COVID-19 era? This is a question that has become part of the daily life of many tourist destinations. The pandemic has affected all economic sectors and tourism is one of the sectors most suffered. According to data from the World Tourism Organization (2021) due to the health emergency 100% of countries have introduced restrictions in the travel sector and for this reason international tourist arrivals dropping by 74% in 2020. Future projections indicate 2023 as the year when a the "regular" flow of tourists can be recorded globally. However, in the meantime, there is a need to improve this sector by implementing strategies to promote and enhance the places to motivate sustainable tourism. The insecurity of travel and of some destinations, due to the many emergency restrictions, pushes tourists to live an outdoor vacation in contact with nature and host community. Thus, the search for authentic places moves minds more consciously towards sustainable tourism practices showing a greater interest in some forms of tourism such as rural and cultural.The aim of this work is to understand how to deal with the "new" needs of the demand, bringing out the rural realities through the creation of an organized sustainable offer that revolves around existing accommodation facilities such as farmhouses. In particular, the case of Sardinia will be analyzed, an island that has long been known for its seaside tourism, but whose rural and internal areas are still not much used touristically. The study intends, after a short review of the literature on the sustainability of rural tourism, highlight the possibility to create rural tourist itineraries capable of enhancing the territory's peculiarities by combining the different landscape assets. The exemplification of the creation of these routes will be realized in GIS field through the creation of a model of accessibility to the Sardinian rural space. This model will be based on the use of isochronous curves obtained from the analysis of travel times both to move towards and from the agritourism that offer accommodation and within their landscape offer.

The impact of tourism on the local community and environment has raised the concern of the sustainability of tourist destinations. Therefore, in the year 1998, the World Tourism Organization (WTO) [1] enriched the concept of sustainable tourism by defining it as “tourism development that can meet the demand of both tourists and host communities while preserving, and improving the opportunity for future development”. This paper tends to explore the current condition of sustainable tourism in Bihar. Primary data are collected from the ten major tourist destinations of the state, i.e., Patna, Gaya, Bodhgaya, Rajgir, Nalanda, Raxaul, Munger, Vaishali, Muzaffarpur, and Bhagalpur. The finding of this paper supports that sustainable practices at tourist places of Bihar are not significantly full fill the tourist expectations. Also, most people think that the state government is not taking the necessary steps and initiatives for the sustainable development of tourism in Bihar. This research paper’s findings help tourism stakeholders understand the current conditions of sustainable tourism in the state and help them reframe their policies and strategies for the overall development of the tourism sector.

Penelitian ini adalah sebuah usaha yang dilakukan untuk mengurai masalah yang dihadapi para stakeholder dalam mewujudkan sebuah pengelolaan pariwisata yang berkelanjutan di kawasan Danau Toba. Indikator yang diukur dalam penelitian ini adalah indikator dasar dari 5 (lima) isu utama pengembangan periwisata berkelanjutan yang telah dikembangkan oleh United Nation World Tourism Organization (UNWTO). Penelitian ini adalah penelitian deskriptif dengan pendekatan kualitatif dan diperkuat dengan data-data yang bersifat kuantitatif. Berdasarkan hasil pengukuran indikator-indikator dasar tersebut dan pendalaman yang dilakukan dengan diskusi-diskusi yang dilakukan dengan para informan penelitian, diketahui bahwa sebenarnya penyelesaian persoalan dasar pengembangan pariwisata berkelanjutan di sebuah destinasi wisata masih menjadi tugas besar bagi para stakeholder kepariwisataan di kawasan tersebut. Berdasarkan jenis permasalahan yang ada, maka terdapat kebutuhan kebijakan pengembangan terkait: 1) peningkatkan perekonomian dengan adanya kegiatan pariwisata; 2) penjaminan kesejahteraan daerah dan masyarakat lokal dengan adanya kegiatan pariwisata; 3) pemenuhan kepuasan pengunjung; 4) pelibatan masyarakat lokal di dalam pengelolaan kepariwisataan; dan 5) penjaminan kelestarian lingkungan hidup.   Kata kunci: pengembangan, pariwisata berkelanjutan, Danau Toba

Endowed with stunning natural beauty, Sleman has become a destination increasingly flooded by tourists from year to year. The rapid development of tourism does have a positive impact, especially on the economic side, but on the other hand, it can have a negative impact if the management does not prioritize the principles of sustainable tourism. The type of tourism that can be affected is tourism that relies on nature as its main attraction, Cliff of Breksi is one of them. Cliff of Breksi has experienced rapid development in terms of the number of tourist visits, but it has never been examined whether its management is following the principle of sustainability. The objectives of this research are: a) to identify the management of the environmental aspects of Cliff of Breksi, whether it is following the indicators of sustainable tourism from The World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) and b) determine what things need to be improved so that management can be more optimal. The research method used is a descriptive qualitative method. Research data were collected through in-depth interviews and observations. The results of the study indicate that the manager has so far had awareness and understanding in applying the principles of sustainable tourism as in the indicators of UNWTO sustainable tourism. The global tourism industry may provide millions of jobs and billions of enjoyable days for travellers and holiday-makers, but it also requires ethical consideration. This chapter starts by examining the ethics of global tourism around two questions: Firstly, are some tourist destinations unethical? Secondly, are some forms of tourism unethical? These two thematic presentations, based on many examples and controversies, are followed by a short discussion of two key concepts which help conceptualize the ethics of global tourism: exploitation and sustainability. The adoption of a Global Code of Ethics for Tourism by the United Nations World Tourism Organization in 1999, the publication of articles) and then books about tourism ethics, the implementation of corporate social responsibility policies in the tourist industry, as well as the increasing demand for ethical tourism products all show that ethics has now entered global tourism, both in practice and in theory.

According to the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), in 2017 tourism had the greatest international growth in seven years, and in 2018, international tourism grew 5% reaching the mark of 1.4 billion, a figure reached two years earlier than predicted. At the same time, in the last 40 years, the video game industry has grown steadily, with games beginning to be seen as one of the primary sources of entertainment. However, there are still few studies analyzing the impact of advertising tourist destinations on digital platforms such as video games. The use of video games in the tourist context may be an inspirational tool, supporting the development of new advertising strategies for tourism marketing. Although the connection between tourism and cinema is widely documented, little research has demonstrated a credible correlation between video games and tourists' attitude towards destinations.

According to the World Tourism Organization, sustainable tourism fosters the conservation of natural resources, respects the socio-cultural authenticity of host communities and ensures the maintenance of economic activities in the long term. With reference to these three areas, this article examines how vineyard landscapes, seen as one of the many resources of wine tourism, represent a potential for promoting forms of sustainable tourism, which be understood as tourism that assumes a balance between the environmental, economic and social determining factors behind a region. For this purpose, different theoretical and thematic approaches are used to highlight the importance of key issues, such as the status of the vineyard landscape as part of the conservation of natural resources in general and the elements linked to tangible and intangible heritage as part of the social authenticity of these landscapes. The results show how the strong cultural nature of vineyard landscapes, which are rich in heritage and aesthetics, guarantees their sustainability for tourist activity, provided that appropriate planning criteria are used.

The year 2017 was declared by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) as the International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development. Tourism is seen as a “driver of development and peace, promoting the harmonious co-existence of people from all countries” (Beijing Declaration 2016). A principle of sustainable tourism is to “build sustainable cities and communities”. From this perspective, tourism should support the wellbeing of all actors involved. Wellbeing of hosts, should be achieved when sustainable tourism guidelines are fulfilled. Wellbeing of guests is necessary to make any destination attractive for tourism. The question posed in this paper, however, challenges that view. The paper presents a theoretical analysis of wellbeing in relation to sustainable tourism and to hosting and guest communities. The first section talks about wellbeing conceptual backgrounds including Social Indicators, index of life quality based on values, subjective wellbeing or responsible wellbeing one. The second section focuses on the analysis of wellbeing in sustainable tourism conceptual background, including the differences between the guidelines provided by WTO (2005), and the latest guidelines published by UNWTO ((United Nations World Tourism Organization)) and UNGA in 2015. The third section juxtaposes wellbeing conceptual background with tourism, the most prominent gaps and challenges of wellbeing regarding hosting communities and tourists.

Introduction. Tourism is an important area of socio-economic activity and makes a significant contribution to the state budget revenues of many countries. The growing importance of tourism and the exacerbation of problems associated with its development, make us talk about the need for change and the search for new vectors of development. This has led to numerous attempts to adapt the main provisions and principles of the concept of sustainable development in the context of the functioning of tourism. It should be noted that the first attempt to define sustainable tourism was made in 1988 by the World Tourism Organization. Sustainable tourism was seen as a direction that leads to the management of all resources in such a way that economic, social and aesthetic needs can be met while preserving cultural identity, basic environmental processes, biodiversity and life support systems. Goal. The purpose of the study is to introduce aspects of sustainable development of tourism as a purposeful influence on the processes of formation and maintenance of the tourist and recreational environment in the interests of society. Method (methodology). The methodological basis of the study were interdisciplinary and systematic approaches to the study of the functioning of the tourism industry. Results. This article reveals the features of the tourism industry from the standpoint of sustainable development.


This chapter discusses the role of the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) in global ocean governance. The UNWTO is a specialized agency of the United Nations that serves as a global forum for tourism policy issues and helps to ensure that Member States, tourist destinations and the business community maximize the positive economic, social and cultural effects of tourism and fully reap its benefits, while minimizing its negative social and environmental impacts. It has three primary objectives: to promote safe and seamless travel, enhance the role of technology in tourism, and link growth and sustainability and promote tourism as a tool for development. After providing a general overview of the UNWTO’s aims, structure and governance, and membership, the chapter examines its work with respect to ocean governance and sea-related tourism, along with the ways in which it promotes sustainable development of tourism.

Even though the World Tourism Organization described Sustainable Tourism as a tourism form that could contribute to the future survival of the industry, the current reality is quite different, since it has not been firmly established in society at expected levels. The present study analyzes which variables drive the consumption of this tourism type, taking tourist awareness as the key element. To this awareness, we must add the current crisis experienced by the tourism industry caused by COVID-19, since it can benefit Sustainable Tourism development, promoting less crowded destinations that favor social distancing. For this, the existing literature on Sustainable Tourism has been examined in order to create a model that highlights the relations among these variables. To determine the meaning of these relations, a sample of 308 tourists was analyzed through structural equation models using Partial Least Squares. The results show that there is a clear attitude on the part of the tourist to develop Sustainable Tourism, driven by the positive effects and motivation it entails, as well as the satisfaction the tourist perceives when consuming a responsible tourism type.
