Abstract. The analysis of the VLF signals radiated by ground transmitters and received on board of the French DEMETER satellite, reveals a drop of the signals (scattering spot) connected with the occurrence of large earthquakes. The extension of the "scattering spots" zone is large enough (1000–5000 km) and, probably, it increases with the magnitude of the "relative" earthquake. A possible model to explain the phenomenology, based on the acoustic gravity waves and the ionosphere turbulence, is proposed. The method of diagnostics applied to this study has the advantage to be a global one due to the world wide location of the powerful VLF transmitters and of the satellite reception. However, a specific disadvantage exists because the method requires rather a long time period of analysis due to the large longitudinal displacements among the successive satellite orbits. At the moment, at least, one month seems to be necessary.

Since 1979, the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) Commission V.8 on Solubility Data has published over 70 compilations of evaluated data on the solubility of gases in liquids, liquids in liquids, and solids in liquids. These volumes represent one of the largest collections of chemical property data ever produced and are the result of work of scientists throughout the world. In 1998, IUPAC signed an agreement with the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) to continue the series by replacing the monographs by articles in the Journal of Physical and Chemical Reference Data. Five data compilations have already been published in the Journal, and many more are under way. Recently, IUPAC and NIST have concluded another agreement about computerizing all previously published IUPAC solubility data. In this paper, we describe in detail the computerization of IUPAC solubility data, with some emphasis on harmonizing data published over a long time period. We describe the anticipated query paths that will be supported. We also discuss some of the driving forces for making these and other data resources available over the World Wide Web.

The most preferred method for preserving food or related products for a long time period is drying. In various countries of the world, the utilization of solar thermal systems in the field of agricultural for conserving fruits, vegetables, coffee and other related crops has revealed to be economical, practical, and environmental friendly. Solar heating systems to dry food and other crops can improve the quality of the product, while reducing wasted produce. This paper deals with development of solar cum eclectically operated food dryer. The fabrication of hybrid dryer is carried out which will be used for the drying process. The amounts of solar radiations are collected through transparent sheet or glass and they are entered in to dryer. Then, amount of heat will get generated in dryer and it will be circulated through fan in dryer itself which will be suitable for drying purpose. The experimentation is also carried out on two foods related to drying process at normal temperature and using this dryer obtained temperature. After experimentation it has been observed that there is difference in temperature at outside the dryer and inside the dryer. The temperature generated inside the dryer is sufficient for drying purpose. So, the developed food dryer can be used for drying the foods as per requirement.

The emergence of autoimage in the framework of media biography and technology developmentThe article deals with the phenomenon of “shifting baselines” in the field of media reality, looking exemplary at the process of the emergence of image concerning persons working in science. Due to the dynamic change of the structure of media offers and media technology in the last decades, manners of researching and finding information have been changing for a long time. In a broader but the same framework, change concerns also media biographies — the apparently individual CV concerning the moment of first contact, knowledge about, ways of use and attitudes to media offers and media technology, that this CV is however interdependent with the belonging to a certain generation. The described development has an effect on the process of construction/emergence of social-communicational reality, world views and other — we are dealing with the phenomenon of “shifting baselines” — the changing of fundamental ideas that build the basis for observing the world from the point of view of the individual. The text looks into those issues by means of an exemplary analysis of empiric material, showing a certain problem that deserves further and broader investigation.

This chapter studies astrology. The astronomical model of the cosmos described in astrology, with the divinities of the heavens proceeding in systematic and observable paths as they preside over the world of mortals, becomes one of the most important and widespread models for understanding the cosmos in the Greco-Roman world, starting with the Hellenistic period and increasingly so during the Roman Empire. Indeed, some form of this cosmological model appears almost everywhere in the Greco-Roman world in this time period, ranging from the most basic identification of traditional Greek and Roman gods with the visible planets to the most sophisticated and complicated systems detailed in the astrological manuals or Gnostic theologies. The most outstanding features of astrology that distinguish it from other forms of divination are its extreme complexity and systematicity. All forms of divination operate with a fixed matrix of signs and a random element of chance, but astrology works with a vast array of celestial signs, and the element of chance is limited to the moment of birth. While some of the multitude of uses of astrological ideas and images do not appear to be marked as abnormal or extraordinary, others bear the familiar stamp of strangeness that marks the practice as extraordinary, beyond the bounds of normal—magical.

This paper presents a method for predicting a value of a gasdynamic efficiency coefficient for perforated muzzle brakes. The method is based on the interior ballistics modelling for determining gasdynamic flow parameters at the brake inlet and 2D modelling the processes inside the brake with treating vents as circumferential slots. The modelling provides information about the mass flux time changes at the inlet and at the outlet of the brake. Using this information, the mass partition coefficient values and the gasdynamic efficiency coefficient values are calculated. It has been shown that the mass partition coefficient establishes very quickly and it is determined only by the geometry of the brake. The gasdynamic efficiency coefficient establishes after a relatively long time, what demands carrying out calculations for a relatively long time period. However, it has been shown that this problem can be solved by making use of the established ratio of mass fluxes at the outlet and the inlet. So, flow parameters’ values at the inlet are sufficient for determining the gasdynamic efficiency coefficient to the moment of attaining the final value. It has been shown that this value depends on the ballistics and on the vents inclination angle.

A fairly large number of criminal acts can be attributed to crimes of an extremist nature, but not all of them can be committed via the Internet. This type of crime has a number of characteristic features that must be established at the initial and subsequent stages of the investigation: 1) the situation in which the crimes were committed, including place and time. A feature of the place is the possibility of committing a crime by a person located anywhere in the world where there is Internet access. The specifics of time include the fact that a crime can be committed for a long time – from the moment extremist information is posted on the network until it is blocked; 2) the methods of committing the considered category of crimes, the features of which are the placement of information containing elements of an extremist nature (texts, pictures, posts, songs, etc.), as well as great opportunities for concealing the crime. In addition to encrypting files, it is possible to quickly delete them from information carriers. Given these circumstances, the priority is the immediate recording of information with an extremist orientation contained in electronic media, and the identification of the persons who posted it. At the same time the key points in the investigation should be the examination of the Internet resource with the obligatory indication of the email address, name, information about feedback, contacts, as well as the appointment of computer and linguistic expertise.

The phenomenon of economic growth is studied by economists and statisticians in various aspects for a long time. Economic theory is devoted to assessing factors of growth in the tradition of R. Solow, R. Barrow, W. Easterly and others. During the last quarter of the century, however, the institutionalists, namely D. North, D. Wallis, B. Weingast as well as D. Acemoglu and J. Robinson, have shown the complexity of the problem of development on the part of socioeconomic and political institutions. As a result, solving the problem of how economic growth affects inequality between countries has proved extremely difficult. The modern world is very diverse in terms of development level, and the article offers a new approach to the formation of the idea of stylized facts using cluster analysis. The existing statistics allows to estimate on a unified basis the level of GDP production by 174 countries of the world for 1992—2016. The article presents a structured picture of the world: the distribution of countries in seven clusters, different in levels of development. During the period under review, there was a strong per capita GDP growth in PPP in the middle of the distribution, poverty in various countries declined markedly. At the same time, in 1992—2016, the difference increased not only between rich and poor groups of countries, but also between clusters.

Cruel and inhumane acts that harm human life and health, as well as humiliate the dignity, are prohibited in most countries of the world, and Russia is no exception in this issue. The article presents an analysis of the institution of responsibility for torture in the Russian Federation. The author comes to the conclusion that the current criminal law of Russia superficially and fragmentally regulates liability for torture, in connection with which the author formulated the proposals to define such act as an independent crime. In the frame of modern globalization, the world community pays special attention to the protection of human rights, in connection with which large-scale international standards have been created a long time ago. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights and other international acts enshrine prohibitions of cruel and inhumane acts that harm human life and health, as well as degrade the dignity.Considering the historical experience of the past, these standards focus on the prohibition of any kind of torture, regardless of the purpose of their implementation.

Pagrindiniai žodžiai: vaizduotė, įsivaizdavimas, fantazija, ego, kitybė, sąmonė.PENGUIN AND PROTEUSImagination as Otherness in meKristupas Sabolius SummaryThe question of Otherness is usually taken into account while discussing the Ego’s relation with Others as well as with the World. This article is based on the premises that the function of phantasy melts the subjectivity, revealing the perspective of intersubjectivity within it. On this purpose Sartre’s, Husserl’s and Merleau-Ponty’s researches on the function of imagination, which elucidate the image as the boundary slipping from the centre of Ego, are compared to the story of Hollywood’ movie „Fight Club“. The penguin, which appears in one of the episodes, registers the moment of egological schism, thus becoming the revelation and incarnation of phantasy. While the playful, autonomous and multiform character of imaginary is cleared out, we can ascertain, speaking in Kantian terms, that it has not a complementary or intermediary function, but, in the genesis of transcendental subject, plays the paradoxical role of „allien innerness“ or „inner alienity“. Thought remaining always beside, imagination is a catalyzer which enables crystallization of transcendental forms. Keywords: imagination, imaginary, phantasy, ego, otherness, consciousness.
