The present paper examines anthroponyms in the Holy Qur'an in three different English translations to shed light on how procedures used by translators can help target-language (TL) readers understand the implied meaning of anthroponyms. In order to conduct the research, the anthroponyms in the Holy Qur'an were isolated and English equivalents were identified. Then Vermes’s (2003) model was applied to the collected data to find answers to the following research questions: (1) What strategies are used most frequently by the translators examined to render the Qur’anic anthroponyms into the target-language (TL)?; (2)  How consistent are the translators in using particular strategies when translating the anthroponyms?; (3) Does the type of translator affect their choice of translation strategy?; (4) Does the model suggested by Vermes (2003) cover all of the strategies employed by the three translators?; and (5) Which procedures are source-language-oriented, TL-oriented, or deep-reader oriented? Overall, the findings indicated that the procedures most frequently used by the translators were “substitution” and “transference.” It was found that the native speaker of neither Arabic nor English foreignized 96.80% of the Qur’anic anthroponyms by using “transference,” while the native translators of either the target-language or the source-language domesticated 71.00% of the anthroponyms by using “substitution.” “Substitution” was used when an exact Biblical equivalent for the Qur’anic anthroponym existed. Otherwise, “transference” was used along with notes to transport the meaning and form while remaining faithful to the intended meaning of the sacred text.

Translation of mystic terms or metaphors is a very important portion of rendering a text from a source language to a target language, because some of mystic terms do not exist in the target language and this point makes the translation harder. This paper aimed at identifying the translation strategies and procedures used by Darbandi and Davis (1984) in The Conference of the Birds of Attar Neishabouri. To achieve the objectives, Attar’s Persian original work (Shafiei Kadkani, 2010) was read carefully to extract mystical terms.  Then, the translated text by Darbandi, and Davis (1984) was carefully read and the corresponding English translations of Persian mystical term were found.  The original mystical terms and their Persian translation were analyzed based on Van Doorslaer’s (2007) map to find out translation strategies and procedures used by the translators on the one hand and indicate the dominant strategy and procedure in the whole work of translation on the other. The result showed that literal translation strategy (72.41%) was the most frequently used strategy and direct transfer procedure (68.96%) was the most frequently used procedure.  This paper may have some implications in literary translation and help translation instructors and translation trainees as well in translation classes.

The Danish word lige [ˈliːə] is a highly culture-specific discourse particle. English translations sometimes render it as “please,” but this kind of functional translation is motivated solely by the expectation that, in English, one has to ‘say please’. In the Danish universe of meaning, there is in fact no direct equivalent of anything like English please, German bitte, or similar constructs in other European languages. Consequently, Danish speakers cannot ‘say please’, and Danish children cannot ‘say the magic word’. However, lige is in its own way a magic word, performing a different kind of pragmatic magic that has almost been left unstudied because it does not correlate well with any of the major Anglo-international research questions such as “how to express politeness” or “how to make a request.” This paper analyzes the semantics of lige in order to shed light on the peculiarities of Danish ethnopragmatics. It is demonstrated not only that Danish lige does a different semantic job than English please, but also that please-based and lige-based interactions are bound to different interpretations of social life and interpersonal relations, and reflect differing cultural values.

“Periphery” and “centre” are two concepts which could be examined in terms of geographic, linguistic, or cultural variations and constants at different periods of human history. If world literature is a united system, with an unequal center and periphery, the interlinguistic translation of Aeschylusʼ tragedies into French by Olivier Py in the twenty-first century will serve as an example in order to highlight the various facets of this multidimensional relationship. Olivier Py, an award-winning prose and theatre writer, poet, director, actor, translator, director of the Avignon Festival since 2013, translated and directed all seven surviving Aeschylean tragedies between 2008 and 2017. He thus played the role of a cultural mediator who ensured the transition from the source language to the target language by creating texts designed to be presented on stage, and following the priorities of the codified theatrical discourse of tragedy. Based on this process, the author exam-ines the various spatio-temporal and cultural relationships between periphery and centre in order to present the main points of Olivier Py’s translation strategy.

This paper aims to investigate the role of intratextuality and contextuality in the mechanisms of understanding euphemism in the Qur’an, which in some cases would provide evidence for the intended meaning or a way of interpreting and translating euphemisms. It hypothesises that the dependence only on dictionary, exegesis or single text may yield misunderstanding or misinterpretation of the euphemistic meaning. The paper develops a linguistic model for critical evaluation of the translation of Qur’anic euphemisms based on the textual level, which goes beyond word or sentence levels. Methodologically, certain euphemisms in different verses in the Qur’an which require intratextual or contextual references for their identification and interpretation are selected and then possible interpretations of their meanings are verified via checking semantic coherence with other Qur’anic verses. The size of the selected sample is representative to cover the most common taboos in any society; namely health, death, sex and sodomy. Six translations of these euphemistic expressions of the Qur’an are fully analysed. The paper gives evidence that translation decisions made by translators need to rely on information beyond traditional dictionaries or exegetic works and require the recognition of intratextual and contextual ties within the Qur’an. It also finds that most translators attempt to convey the intended meaning of euphemisms, while the euphemistic style is sacrificed. The study concludes that the translation of euphemism in the Qur’an should adhere to the syntactic patterns and lexical units of the source language (SL) structure, and make cultural and linguistic shifts in the target language (TL).

This article discusses Indonesian—Poetry translation. The purpose of this article is to describe the strategies of translating poetry of Chairil Anwar by Raffel Raffel in “The Complete Prose and Poetry of Chairil Anwar”, a book written and edited by Raffel Raffel. In order to reach the purpose, the poetries of the source language are compared with the poetries of the target language in order to find out the strategy used in the translation. The method applied in this study is a qualitative descriptive analysis of the meaning. The data were analyzed by using some strategies of translation theory in general given by Newmark, Vinay and Dalberhet, Baker, and Hoed and the strategy of translating poetry by Lavefere. The result of the analysis shows that the general translation strategy used in the translation of Chairil Anwar Poetries are modulation translation, calque or literal translation, descriptive equivalence translation, generic words translation, additional translation and interpretation translation. Meanwhile the strategies of translating poetry used by Raffel are metrical translation, rhymed translation, blank verse translation, and interpretation translation.AbstrakPenelitian ini membahas penerjemahan puisi bahasa Indonesia kedalam bahasa Inggris. Tujuannya adalah mendeskripsikan strategi penejemahan puisi-puisi Chairil Anwar oleh Raffel Raffel dalam bukunya yang berjudul The Complete Prose and Poetry of Chairil Anwar. Untuk mencapai tujuan penelitian ini, puisi-puisi Chairil Anwar dalam bahasa Indonesia dibandingkan dengan terjemahannya dalam bahasa Inggris. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah metode deskriptif kualitatif. Data dianalisis dengan menggunakan strategi penerjemahan secara umum yang dikemukakan oleh Newmark, Vinay dan Dalberhet, Baker, and Hoed dan strategi penerjemahan puisi oleh Andre Lavefere. Hasil analisis menunjukkan bahwa strategi penejemahan umum yang digunakan dalam menerjemahkan puisi Chairil Anwar adalah strategi penerjemahan modulasi, calque atau penerjemahan literal, kesepadanan deskriptif, penerjemahan dengan kata generik atau kata yang lebih umum, penerjemahan dengan tambahan dan penerjemahan dengan pengurangan. Sedangkan strategi penerjemahan puisi yang digunakan oleh Raffel adalah penerjemahan metris, penerjemahan rima atau sajak, penerjemahan bait secara bebas, dan penerjemahan interpretasi.

This research wanted to help the reader to understand about the classification of translation strategies in the novel The Fault in Our Stars. The writer used Larson’s (1998), proposes three strategies to translate figurative language. The writer was interested in analyzing the figurative language because there are many kinds of implicit meaning in figurative language; she felt that it was interesting to be analyzed. Besides, the writer chose a novel because it explains the story more detail than others such as movie. She chose The Fault in Our Stars novel because the story is quite touched and there are a lot of figurative languages on its novel. The writer hope that the translated meaning of figurative language can be the same as the original text.  Keywords: Translation, Translation Strategy, Figurative Language, Source Language, Target Language.

This study analyzes the metaphor in the movies Mulan and Moana. The objectives of this research are to identify the strategy in the translation of metaphor and to explain the motive in using the translation strategy. This research employs several theories such as Lakoff and Johnson’s (1980) theory to identify the metaphor, Newmark’s (1988) theory to categorize the translation strategy. The result of this study shows that out of seven strategies, three strategies are employed to translate the metaphor in the movies. Those strategies are 1) reproducing the same image as the source language, 2) replacing the image into a different image in the target language, and 3) converting the image into sense. The strategy of reproducing the same image is used when the metaphorical image is acceptable in the target language. The strategy of replacing the image into a different image is employed when the SL image is uncommon and there is an equal image in the target language. When the metaphorical image is not familiar and there is no equal image in the target language, converting the image into the sense is applied in translating the metaphor.

Translating taboo words in subtitling especially translating them into Indonesian is quite difficult since most of the Indonesian people are not used to utter taboo or offensive words publicly. In addition, watching movie is more of social activity compared to reading and that is why reading taboo expressions while watching might be embarrassing. This is why this study tries to explore the functions of the taboo words found in “The Help” movie and tries to find out how the translator translate the taboo words into the target language in order to produce the closest functions to the source language without ignoring the technical aspects of subtitling. This study also deals with the strategy used by the translator to translate the taboo words. The main theories proposed herein are from Karamitroglou (1998), Ljung (2011), Toury (1995), and Gottlieb (1992).            There are 69 taboo words found in the raw data and the functions of those taboo words are to express sympathy, surprise, disappointment, disbelief, fear, annoyance, metaphorical interpretation, reaction to mishap, to emphasize the associated item, function as adjectival intensifier, name-calling, anaphoric use of epithet, oath, curse, unfriendly suggestion, and four of the taboo words show non-swearing word or in dysphemism form. The strategies applied are omission (17), transfer (27), and euphemism (25). In terms of the technical aspect in subtitling, all of the subtitles in the target language are presented at the maximum of two lines at once. However, there are three lines of the subtitles which exceed the maximum numbers of characters being proposed.            Since taboo word is not only used to offend someone, it is important for the translator to get the closest equivalence in the target language in order to maintain its function. The translator may choose whether he/she wants to follow the source language norms to produce adequate target text or follow the target language norms in order to produce acceptable target text. Keywords: translation strategy, subtitling, taboo word, dysphemism, omission, transfer, euphemism

The current study aims at exploring some syntactic and semantic underlying problems in three English translations of the meanings of Surat Quraish; that is in English translations of Abdel-Haleem, Khan and Mohammed Taj Al-Din Al-Hilai and Pickthall. Also, the study aims at probing how the three translators deal with some syntactic and semantic underlying problems and constrains in their renderings of the meanings of Surat Quraish into English. Four Ayahs of Surat Quraish were purposefully selected to address the research questions and categorized into semantic, and syntactic problems. The study shows that there are some syntactic, and semantic underlying problems in the translation of the meaning of Surat Quraish into English rendered by Abdel-Haleem, Khan and Mohammed Taj Al-Din Al-Hilai and Pickthall. Moreover, the types of the syntactic, and semantic underlying problems are lack of cohesion and coherence as well as the translation strategies employed by the three translators. The study also recommends that translators of the Holy Quran must adopt footnotes, paraphrase, modulation, transposition and transliteration, and other translation strategies to avoid a probable loss of the intended meaning of the Message.

A translated novel can enrich the culture and life of other nations. In order to properly understand the intended meaning of the author, the translator must understand both the source language and the target language. Meaning is an important element in the translation. Article explained the results of the study of the passive sentences of the source language (English) translated into Indonesian. The results of the study show that not all of the passive sentences of the source language can be translated in the form of passive sentences in target language. Instead, the passive sentences can be translated in the form of active sentences because of the meaning contained.
