This study analyzes the metaphor in the movies Mulan and Moana. The objectives of this research are to identify the strategy in the translation of metaphor and to explain the motive in using the translation strategy. This research employs several theories such as Lakoff and Johnson’s (1980) theory to identify the metaphor, Newmark’s (1988) theory to categorize the translation strategy. The result of this study shows that out of seven strategies, three strategies are employed to translate the metaphor in the movies. Those strategies are 1) reproducing the same image as the source language, 2) replacing the image into a different image in the target language, and 3) converting the image into sense. The strategy of reproducing the same image is used when the metaphorical image is acceptable in the target language. The strategy of replacing the image into a different image is employed when the SL image is uncommon and there is an equal image in the target language. When the metaphorical image is not familiar and there is no equal image in the target language, converting the image into the sense is applied in translating the metaphor.

This research wanted to help the reader to understand about the classification of translation strategies in the novel The Fault in Our Stars. The writer used Larson’s (1998), proposes three strategies to translate figurative language. The writer was interested in analyzing the figurative language because there are many kinds of implicit meaning in figurative language; she felt that it was interesting to be analyzed. Besides, the writer chose a novel because it explains the story more detail than others such as movie. She chose The Fault in Our Stars novel because the story is quite touched and there are a lot of figurative languages on its novel. The writer hope that the translated meaning of figurative language can be the same as the original text.  Keywords: Translation, Translation Strategy, Figurative Language, Source Language, Target Language.

The function of translation is to convey meaning or message from source language text into target language text. However, in translating, the translator will face some problems, for example is the translation of repetitive Indonesian adjectives. This study investigates how repetitive Indonesian adjectives are translated into English. Indonesian has repetitive adjectives such as tinggi-tinggi, cantik-cantik, and jauh-jauh and the English translation of the repetition is not tall-tall, beautiful-beautiful, and far-far respectively. The method applied in this study is qualitative descriptive method. The data will be categorized and classified and then analyzed in accordance with the principle, translation strategies, and relevant theories. The result of the study shows that literal translation strategy and transposition strategy are the most frequent strategy used by the translator. Some of them are translated in the different form grammatically but the meaning of the message in source language is well maintained into the target language. The principle of translation employed by the translator to translate Indonesian repetitive adjective is meaning.

This study aims to find out strategies used in the translation of food-related culture-specific items in Netflix cooking show, The Final Table of UK and USA episodes, and factors that influence the choice of strategies used in translating these items. The study uses discourse analysis as a research design relying on corpuses or food terminologies in Indonesian subtitle and their original as its primary data. All data were marked bold, rewritten, sorted, and classified in accordance with the identified themes of the culture-specific items. The collected data were qualitatively analyzed using Pedersen’s translation strategy, particularly for culture-specific items. The study found out that there were 51 food-related culture-specific items in the source language (SL) with their translations, and there were five translation strategies employed by the translator in rendering these items, namely retention, specification, direct translation, generalization, and substitution. Retention was the most frequently used strategy as it resembled 35 times in the data. The most common factor identified was the non-existence of the source language foodstuff terms in the target language as it existed 21 times out of 51 data. This study recommends the translators of this Netflix to consider the culture when translating from the SL to the target language (TL).

This study focused on the analysis of the translation strategies and resulted translation quality in rendering metaphors found in the Twilight novel. The analysis involved the translation strategies by Newmark (1988) and translation quality by Hartono (2016). The results showed that there were seven translation strategies utilized by the translator in rendering the metaphors in the Twilight novel from Indonesian into English with total metaphors were 164. Those metaphors were translated using translation strategies: reproducing the same metaphorical image in the target language 48 times (29%), replacing the metaphorical image in the source language with a standard metaphorical image in the target language with 25 times (15%), translating metaphor by simile by maintaining the metaphorical image with 20 times (12%), translating metaphor by simile plus sense with 13 times (8%), converting a metaphor to its sense or meaning only with 44 times (29%), deleting metaphor with 7 times (4%), and translating metaphor by the same metaphor with the sense or meaning added with 7 times (4%). In terms of content quality, the translation of metaphors was dominated by good content, presentation, and mechanics quality. Moreover, the application of each translation strategy would result in different types of translation quality in terms of content, presentation and mechanics. In addition, it is suggested that the employment of translation strategy in rendering metaphor should consider deeply the existence of the same metaphor both in the source language and target language because the quality of the translation will be determined by the translation strategies.

The research dealt with Metaphor Sentences. The aims of this study were: (1) to find out the translation strategies of metaphors are used in The Magic of Thinking Big and (2) to describe the translation strategies maintain metaphors in The Magic of Thinking Big. The research was conducted by using qualitative design. The data of this study were sentences. The data were collected through documentary technique and the instrument was the documentary sheet. The technique of data analysis was descriptive. The finding of this study revealed that: (1) The metaphor in The magic of Thinking Big were translated by applying six translation strategies, namely: word for word Translation (5.3%) lieral translation (4.3%), faithful translation (57.5%), Free translation (3.2%), communicative translation (30.5%) and discursive creation was found (2.2%). (2) The metaphors are maintained that found in the Magic of Thinking Big are original metaphors turned into another original metaphors, stock metaphors turned into another stock metaphors, adapted metaphors turned into adapted metaphors, dead metaphors turned into dead metaphors, original metaphor turned into stock metaphor, stock metaphor turned into original metaphor, meanwhile, 10 original metaphors and 1 dead metaphor are no longer classified as metaphors. Language has special characteristic that is metaphor sentences, therefore in the case of translating of metaphor sentences in which their concept in unknown for readers, the translator often faces the problems to find out the translation strategies to translate metaphor in a source language (SL) and how the metaphor sentences are maintained in the target language (TL).Keywords : Metaphor, Translation Strategies, Maintain Metaphor

Translation of mystic terms or metaphors is a very important portion of rendering a text from a source language to a target language, because some of mystic terms do not exist in the target language and this point makes the translation harder. This paper aimed at identifying the translation strategies and procedures used by Darbandi and Davis (1984) in The Conference of the Birds of Attar Neishabouri. To achieve the objectives, Attar’s Persian original work (Shafiei Kadkani, 2010) was read carefully to extract mystical terms.  Then, the translated text by Darbandi, and Davis (1984) was carefully read and the corresponding English translations of Persian mystical term were found.  The original mystical terms and their Persian translation were analyzed based on Van Doorslaer’s (2007) map to find out translation strategies and procedures used by the translators on the one hand and indicate the dominant strategy and procedure in the whole work of translation on the other. The result showed that literal translation strategy (72.41%) was the most frequently used strategy and direct transfer procedure (68.96%) was the most frequently used procedure.  This paper may have some implications in literary translation and help translation instructors and translation trainees as well in translation classes.

In accordance with translation, the metaphors must be translated very carefully in order to avoid misunderstanding. Larson (1984:250) states that If metaphors from source language are translated literally into the target language, they will often be completely misunderstood. Because the translation cannot simply reproduce, or be, the original. In fact, in the folklores there are still literally in translating the text. The aims of this study were to describe the realization of translation strategies in the translation live metaphors in the Sumatera Folklores. The research was conducted by using qualitative design. The data of this study were live metaphors in the Sumatera Folklores. The source of data were 15 folklores in Sumatera. The data were collected through documentary technique and the instrument for collecting the data was documentary sheet. The technique of data analysis was descriptive. The findings of this study revealed that the realization of translation strategies in live metaphors in the Sumatera Folklores into English by applying two process, namely: Single Strategy (91.83%), Double Strategies (8.16%). Metaphors often become the problem in translation and in accordance with translation, the metaphors must be translated from source language (SL) into target language (TL) in order to avoid misunderstanding. Keywords: Translation Strategies, Live Metaphor, Sumatera language, Folklores

This study aims to explore teaching methods and strategies in teaching translation among lecturers at IAIN Ponorogo. In their teaching, the lecturers determine the high goals, that is being able to translate Arabic into Indonesian, and the reverse; However, students' language competence is not good enough to achieve that goal because translation is a work that must be supported by various types of competencies such as understanding text, understanding Arabic grammar, understanding methods and translation strategies, and so on. Student competencies are not in accordance with the specific goals in this education, and this fact is what leads lecturers to carry out effective teaching and use good types of teaching methods and strategies so that education is successful and students can achieve the goals. Researchers used a qualitative approach and explored descriptive facts such as written voices or individual speeches, contemplative traits and data sources. The data analysis method is descriptive analysis with three methods, namely data reduction and data presentation. The results of this study are 1) The method used in teaching translation: translation is word by word, because translation is done between separation by placing the translation under the source language in order to maintain word order. The word is translated as a word in a general sense. Pro translation because it produces contextual meaning of the source language into the target language appropriately. Therefore, translators are careful in translating cultural vocabulary and adjusting grammar. This method seeks to achieve the author's goals. 2) The strategy used is an expansion against the target, and the word element is an expansion in the target language, semantic translation, ordinal translation, transcription or semantic translation intersection. 3) And the learning outcomes obtained by students are good, academic results are not good. Translation is a process to render the meaning from the source text into the target text. A translator, however, will find some problems during translation process. Equivalence is the case which often appears (i.e. culture specific concept, the source-language concept is not lexicalized in the target language, source-language word is semantically complex, etc). To cope with equivalnce problems in translation process, some experts suggest some strategies which can be applied in doing translation. Some strategies are transference, naturalization, cultural equivalent, etc. The strategies which often appears in the example texts in this paper are transference, naturalization, descriptive equivalent, couplet and  through-translation. It is recomended that translator apply the strategies if only there is no equivalence problem in target language.
