While Alphabet, Facebook, and Microsoft are mostly associated with online services and mobile applications, they now constitute important actors of the global communication infrastructure, as witnessed by their important investments in data centers, subsea cables, telecommunication networks, and non-terrestrial connectivity (such as drones, balloons, or satellites). Beyond these spectacular (and sometimes hypothetical) projects, this paper details how these tech companies are already changing the ways communication networks are managed. It shows that they become a dominant force shaping global connectivity by leveraging the platform logic that granted them their initial success in the web economy, and adapting it to communication infrastructures. Based on interviews with industry experts and network engineers, document analysis, and site visits, this paper offers a model to analyse this platformization of communication infrastructures: it consists of disaggregating existing networks components, inserting a platform which acts as new integrator, and making networks modular and programmable. This model extends scholarship on the platformization of social and economic life and shows how the same platform logic is at the center of the infrastructural expansion of tech giants and at the source of the power they gain over global connectivity.

The advent of internet represents a revolution for the contemporary era, having brought about a striking series of changes in social, institutional, political, and economic life. This ongoing revolution has spread and absorbed within itself all the problems related to its own development. Objects become recognizable and acquire intelligence in that they are able to communicate data regarding themselves and also access other information aggregated by other devices. They are able to participate in a dialogue and interact among themselves within electronic communication networks without human intervention. All objects can acquire an active role thanks to connection with the web. The associated problems, which can no longer be ignored, draw attention above all to the lack of data control, which is to the vast extent of the data collected and more generally to the security of these data. This chapter has the aim of analyzing the ways in which European legislators, and consequently also Italian representatives, have intervened in order to stem the tide of emerging issues.

Статья посвящена анализу возможностей сетей связи для сокращения цифрового разрыва между регионами Российской Федерации. Основным результатом статьи является установление взаимосвязи валового регионального продукта и доли занятых в сфере информатизации и связи в общем числе занятых во всех отраслях. Результаты статьи могут быть использованы заинтересованными министерствами и ведомствами при реализации программы цифровой экономики, научными и проектными организациями при планировании и проектировании сетей связи, а также университетами в учебном процессе. The article is devoted to the analysis of the capabilities of telecommunication networks with ultralow latency to reduce the digital divide between the regions of the Russian Federation. The main result of the article is to establish the relationship between the gross regional product and the share of people employed in the field of informatization and communications in the total number of people employed in all industries. The results of the article can be used by interested ministries and departments in the implementation of the digital economy program, scientific and design organizations in the planning and design of communication networks, as well as by universities in the educational process.

Swarm intelligence, as demonstrated by natural biological swarms, has numerous powerful properties desirable in many engineering systems, such as telecommunication. Communication network management is becoming increasingly difficult  due to the increasing size, rapidly changing topology, and complexity of communication networks. This paper describes  how biologically-inspired agents can be used to solve control problems in telecommunications. These agents, inspired by the foraging behaviour of ants, exhibit the desirable characteristics of simplicity of action and interaction. The colle ction of agents, or swarm system, deals only with local knowledge and exhibits a form of distributed control with agent communication effected through the environment. In this paper we explore the application of ant-like agents to the problem of routing in telecommunication networks.

This paper reports a new parallel and distributed simulation architecture for OMNeT++, an open-source discrete event simulation environment. The primary application area of OMNeT++ is the simulation of communication networks. Support for a conservative PDES protocol (the Null Message Algorithm) and the relatively novel Ideal Simulation Protocol has been implemented.Placeholder modules, a novel way of distributing the model over several logical processes (LPs) is presented. The OMNeT++ PDES implementation has a modular and extensible architecture, allowing new synchronization protocols and new communication mechanisms to be added easily, which makes it an attractive platform for PDES research, too. We intend touse this framework to harness the computational capacity of highperformance cluster computersfor modeling very large scale telecommunication networks to investigate protocol performance and rare event failure scenarios.

This paper is focused on the usage of location services in mobile applications that were developed for the purpose of reporting different events that are based on their location. The event that is intended to be generic and universal can, as in examples used in this paper, be the reporting of some occurrence to a city’s communal affairs office. Such a generic event can include both multimedia and textual data, in addition to location information obtained using mobile device running the app. The software solution that is described in this paper consists of a mobile application that was developed for the Android operating system and a web application that includes a series of PHP scripts that run on a dedicated server. The web application consists of a backend scripts that facilitate the communication of a smart phone and the server and frontend related scripts used by users and administrators to access and check the data and process the reported events.

Firefox OS is an operating system for mobile devices. It is developed by Mozilla and is based on web technologies. Developed applications are therefore not tied to a given type of hardware. Mozilla works on standardisation of Web APIs, so that the device hardware could be accessed more easily. It also introduced its sign-in system for the Web and furthermore, it wants to redefine the way payments work for mobile applications. Firefox OS is not directly competing with Android and iOS, although it has some common target markets with Android. It could be an opportunity to weaken the iOS and Android duopoly. For now it targets users that don't have smartphones yet and is mostly used on low-end devices. The biggest challenge of Firefox OS is to assure a stable position in the mobile OS ecosystem and to get a large volume of users. Mozilla has an ambition to improve the web and make the web the platform. However developing the Firefox OS and ensuring its important place on the market is difficult because of technological and business limits that will be discussed in this chapter.


Rich Internet Applications (RIAs) are considered one kind of Web 2.0 application; however, they have demonstrated to have the potential to transcend throughout the steps in the Web evolution, from Web 2.0 to Web 4.0. In some cases, RIAs can be leveraged to overcome the challenges in developing other kinds of Web-based applications. In other cases, the challenges in the development of RIAs can be overcome by using additional technologies from the Web technology stack. From this perspective, the new trends in the development of RIAs can be identified by analyzing the steps in the Web evolution. This chapter presents these trends, including cloud-based RIAs development and mashups-rich User Interfaces (UIs) development as two easily visible trends related to Web 2.0. Similarly, semantic RIAs, RMAs (Rich Mobile Applications), and context-aware RIAs are some of the academic proposals related to Web 3.0 and Web 4.0 that are discussed in this chapter.

Optimization is an essential tool in the field of decision support. In this chapter, the authors study an inverse problem applied in the telecommunication networks. Indeed, in the telecommunication networks, service providers have subscription offers to customers. Since competition is strong in this sector, most of these advertising offerings, totally or partially ambiguous, are prepared to attract the attention of consumers. For this reason, customers face problems in making decisions about the choice of the operators that gives them a better report price/QoS. Mathematical modeling of this decision support problem led to the resolution of an inverse problem. More precisely, the inverse problem is to find the function of the QoS real knowing the QoS theoretical or advertising. This model will help customers who seek to know the degree of sincerity of their operators, and it is an opportunity for operators who want to maintain their resources so that they gain the trust of customers.

Briefly reviewed the origin and presence of ASP, elicited the basic requirements of the construction of ASP platform on all-purpose and special needs for enterprises manufacturing the products of engineering machinery. The hierarchy of overall structure for ASP was presented with five layers: client’s layer, representation layer, professional logic layer, integration layer, and resource layer for different functions. Emphasis was focused on the data centers with the representation layer closer to the client’s terminals, the original IT resources stored in the local areas, and important data stored in the secure stations and backup and with standby data centers; on the manufacturing system based on CAD/CAPP/VM and other related techniques; and on the security system with access manipulations, secret keys, ID discriminations and audit tracking. The initial ASP platform has been set up for the medium and small sized enterprises, and was actuated with Rational Rose, UML adopted for the web system, and JavaScript employed for the events, databases, and development of the user’s terminals. Quanhigh Machinery Company was taken as an example in application with four kinds of typical components of engineering machinery.
