The validity of the research instrument was properly ensured through experts’ opinions and pilot testing. The reliability of the instruments was ensured by applying the Cronbach Alpha. The value of the reliability for supervisors was found 0.939 and the reliability value for the head teachers was measured at 0.932. The data collected from respondents were subsequently organized properly. The collected data was accurately analyzed, tabulated, presented and interpreted. Descriptive statistics were applied and data was presented in the mean score, frequency and standard deviation and interpreted accordingly. The data was presented in the form of tables. It was concluded that the supervisors are discharging their professional responsibilities with the spirit to promote quality education, promote a healthy and child-friendly environment in schools and head teacher are keen on conveying the instructions from the supervisors to the teachers.

Pakistan has a variety of privately managed schools. Inspired by thecorporate model the large school systems offer franchise to the smallschools in the name of better quality education leading to better marketacceptability. This study was conducted to find out the difference in thequality of education provided by the franchise and independent privatesecondary schools. Ten schools of a renowned large spread schoolsystem were selected conveniently and ten independent schools wereselected from the same localities for ensuring similarity of the context.Quality of education was define dalong input, process and product/outputindicators. Opinion of Head Teachers (HTs)/ School principals wasgathered through a questionnaire consisting five point rating scale oninput and process indicators. Opinion of HTs about input indicators wasvalidated through direct observation of the input indicators in the schoolsby one of the researchers. Students’ achievement scores in thematriculation examination conducted by the Board of Intermediate andSecondary Education, Lahore were the indicator of quality output. TheHTs of the two types of schools perceived no significant difference in thequality of input and process at their schools but the independent schoolsscoring slightly better on each of the two indicators. However, theindependent private schools were significantly superior to the franchiseschools in quality of output in terms of students’ pass percentage anddistribution over grades. Thus, the claim of franchising for better qualityeducation was not supported by this research.

Pakistan is paying special attention to its educational system and training of the teachers to improve the quality of teaching as a profession. One of the most highlighted elements in this educational development is the quality teaching practices in terms of National Professional Standards for Teachers (NPST).Descriptive and inferential statistical analysis techniques were applied to analyze the comparison between teachers and head-teachers' perceptions of NPST. Through simple random sampling technique 30 head-teachers (15 males and 15 females) and 300 teachers (150 males and 150 females) were selected. Two questionnaires were developed to assess the teachers and head-teachers' perceptions about NPSTs. The results revealed that comparatively female teachers who were more qualified and experienced were recently hired teachers who knew about National Professional Standards, were more enthusiastic about how to practice these standards in comparison to the teachers who had joined this profession in the late 80's and 90's.

This study examines the educational facilities which are important in providing quality education at secondary schools. The researcher examined the appropriateness of physical infrastructure, teaching-learning material, library, computer laboratory, and science laboratory at secondary schools to find out nexus of quality education with these provided educational facilities. The research design of the study was quantitative in nature. The research population included 194 secondary schools in Bahawalnagar, 194 head teachers, and 3739 SSTs. The sample of the study was comprised of over 45 head teachers and 90 sets of all the secondary schools of Tehsil Bahawalnagar selected by using cluster random sampling technique. A questionnaire was developed on a 5- point Likert scale to examine & analyze the educational facilities including teaching-learning material, computer laboratory, and library and science laboratory. An observation checklist was also developed and used for the collection of data. The further checklist was divided into three options yes, no and status further divided into two options useable and unusable, appropriateness, and inappropriateness. Data was collected & analyzed using descriptive statistics including percentage and frequency to examine the appropriateness of educational facilities. Quantitative data was analyzed using computer-generated software SPSS. Results revealed that the majority of the respondents were agreed with educational facilities. The study concludes that the researcher observe the educational facilities through a checklist maximum facilities were present, useable and appropriateness of these was also registered. Research study recommended that more opportunities for students may be available for experience science being exposed to more practical’s work in labs which may enhance better performance in science subjects.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to explore the data available and their use by Kenyan secondary school teachers and head teachers. Design/methodology/approach Using a qualitative case study design, this study utilised interviews and documentary evidence to explore the data available and their use within Kenyan schools. Findings The data available in Kenyan schools were similar except for context data which had slight variations between schools. Head teachers mainly used school-level data to monitor school functioning, plan and develop school-level policies which mainly focused on school and curriculum improvement but little on teacher improvement. Teacher improvement attempts were mostly via benchmarking. The results also show that Kenyan head teachers hide inspection reports from teachers and that some head teachers used data creatively than others. For example, one head teacher used data to start a feeding programme to support economically disadvantaged students. Teachers, however, mostly used classroom-level data to plan lessons and monitor students’ progress. Research limitations/implications The study results may be used for data use comparative studies between developing and developed countries. Practical implications Based on the findings, data use training is needed to help Kenyan schools use data to improve teachers and teaching. Originality/value Accountability and data use are at the centre of many school improvement efforts the world over. The last two decades, for example, show pressure on schools to account for the resources invested and for the education they provide to children mainly in the form of data. Regrettably, studies pay little attention to data use in schools within developing countries such as Kenya.

Recently, the issues of science education have been exhaustively discussed. The questions of science education are debated at all levels. The today‘s situation in science education area puts forward set of problems to be indispensably solved. In this editorial such problematic aspects as qualification of science teachers, modernisation of system of preparation of science teachers in a context of the theory of constructivism, improvement of material resources of schools etc. Are shortly presented. It is stated that more attention it is necessary to give to school science textbooks and their effective usage in educational process. For example, in february 2007 an International Meeting of IOSTE on „Critical Analysis of School Science Textbook“ was organized in Hammamet (Tunisia). A lot of empirical results dealing with the anglysis of syllabuses and science textbooks were presented during the meeting. In Lithuania there are also some actual problems connected with school science textbooks, for example methodological level, quality of teaching /learning content, didactically well-founded visualisation etc. Such questions as scientific literacy, e-literacy, illiteracy, interests and motivation in science, quality of science education process at primary school level are the burning issues.

In order to set standards for the performance of the telephone network, it is necessary to understand the subjective effects of the telephone service impairments we wish to control. In a laboratory environment, we asked subjects to play a computer-controlled game which required the frequent use of the telephone as a natural part of the game. Impairments to telephone switching service, such as dial-tone delay, post-dialing delay, and blocked call attempts, and impairments to telephone transmission quality, such as loss and noise were introduced into the telephone service which the subjects experienced. After each use of the telephone, the subjects rendered their opinion, on a five-point rating scale, as to the quality of telephone service just provided. The data produced by the experiment were used to construct a mathematical model of customer opinion as a function of the objective measures of telephone network performance. This model will enable us to analyze the present performance of the telephone system. More importantly, the model will enable us to estimate customer opinion for future telephone systems, were we to implement new or revised standards for the control of switching and transmission impairments.
