The problem of counting the number of shortest paths between two points on a grid is a combinatorial problem that is often found in mathematical competitions or enrichment problems for various levels of school. There are several ways to count, namely by drawing a figure (visual representation), by the number pattern in the Pascal Triangle, and the combination formula. This paper discusses a comparison of each ways related to the problem at hand. On a simple grid all of the three methods can be used. On complex grids the combination formula is the only method can be applied, in some cases the technique of number pattern in Pascal Triangle is still applicable.  On the grid with varied obstacles, foresight and flexibility is needed in the selection of the counting methods.

AbstractNetwork models of brain dynamics provide valuable insight into the healthy functioning of the brain and how this breaks down in disease. A pertinent example is the use of network models to understand seizure generation (ictogenesis) in epilepsy. Recently, computational models have emerged to aid our understanding of seizures and to predict the outcome of surgical perturbations to brain networks. Such approaches provide the opportunity to quantify the effect of removing regions of tissue from brain networks and thereby search for the optimal resection strategy. Here, we use computational models to elucidate how sets of nodes contribute to the ictogenicity of networks. In small networks we fully elucidate the ictogenicity of all possible sets of nodes and demonstrate that the distribution of ictogenicity across sets depends on network topology. However, the full elucidation is a combinatorial problem that becomes intractable for large networks. Therefore, we develop a global optimisation approach to search for minimal sets of nodes that contribute significantly to ictogenesis. We demonstrate the potential applicability of these methods in practice by identifying optimal sets of nodes to resect in networks derived from 20 individuals who underwent resective surgery for epilepsy.

Counting the number of shortest paths in various graphs is an important and interesting combinatorial problem, especially in weighted graphs with various applications. We consider a specific infinite graph here, namely the honeycomb grid. Changing to its dual, the triangular grid, paths between triangle pixels (we abbreviate this term to trixels) are counted. The number of shortest weighted paths between any two trixels of the triangular grid is discussed. For each trixel, there are three different types of neighbor trixels, 1-, 2- and 3-neighbours, depending the Euclidean distance of their midpoints. When considering weighted distances, the positive values α, β and γ are assigned to the ‘steps’ to various neighbors. We gave formulae for the number of shortest weighted paths between any two trixels in various cases by the respective weight values. The results are nicely connected to various numbers well-known in combinatorics, e.g., to binomial coefficients and Fibonacci numbers.

Semiotic Assessment of Visualization Tools Alena Zakharova 1, Aleksey Shklyar 2 and Evgeniya Vekhter 2 1 Institute of Control Sciences of Russian Academy of Sciences, 65, Profsoyuznaya st., Moscow, 117997, Russian Federation 2 Tomsk Polytechnic University, 30, Lenin Ave., Tomsk, 634050, Russian Federation Abstract A visual analytics means is a set of tools used to obtain a visual representation of the data explored by the user, its interpretation and complete analysis. It is quite possible that such a set will be a developed specialized environment for continuous user interaction with a data stream, which has the capacity to control and replace the way of visual data representation. A wide range of existing visualization tools, as well as unlimited borrowing of technological solutions originally intended for a narrow application area, and the transfer of the capabilities they create to other directions make it urgent to form a sound approach to the comparison and selection of means of data visual representation of a given complexity [1]. The purpose of this selection is to save the end user’s resources, based on the absence or minimization of resource losses arising at the stage of selection and testing of visual analytics tools. The paper shows the possibility of using a semiotic visualization model for purposeful design or selection of visualization tools.

In the pandemic generated by the coronavirus, governments and the media were suddenly faced with the difficult challenge of communicating about this issue with the population and transferring technical concepts and large volumes of data to the general public. It was necessary to find a way to make this unfamiliar content accessible to everyone, using known and assimilable formulas. In this context, the strategy chosen to make this communication more efficient was clear: transmit all this vital information through the visual representation of data. In this work we analyze the problems associated with the data involved in these visualizations and review a selection of good and bad practices used in these communication strategies.

Recent improvements in cycle counting methods have increased the value of the block load programme as a method of simulating the fatigue damage caused by random service loading. It has already been observed that some of the lower load levels in certain block programmes make insignificant contributions to the total fatigue damage, and that the elimination of such levels can provide a very valuable method of accelerating tests. This paper presents further evidence in support of this observation, and proposes an analytical method by which the damage significance of each block may be predicted, thus enabling a rapid selection of those levels which may be safely omitted.

The connecting of things to the Internet makes it possible for smart things to access all kinds of Web services. However, smart things are energy-limited, and suitable selection of Web services will consume less resources. In this paper, we study the problem of selecting some Web service from the candidate set. We formulate this selection of Web services for smart things as single-source many-target shortest path problem. We design algorithms based on the Dijkstra and breadth-first search algorithms, propose an efficient pruning algorithm for breadth-first search, and analyze their performance of number of iterations andI/Ocost. Our empirical evaluation on real-life graphs shows that our pruning algorithm is more efficient than the breadth-first search algorithm.

With the increase in traffic, internet service providers are trying their best to provide maximum utilization of resources available. The current traffic load has to be taken into account for computation of paths in routing protocols. Network applications; require the shortest paths to be used for communication purposes. Addressing the selection of path, from a known source to destination is the basic aim of this paper. This paper proposes a method of calculating the shortest path for a network using a combination of Open shortest path first and Genetic Algorithm (OSGA). Genetic Algorithm is used in this paper for optimization of routing. It helps in enhancing the performance of the routers.
