SummaryThe performance of two contrasting pearl millet (Pennisetum glaucum) genotypes was compared following five planting dates under rainfed conditions in deep sandy soils at Bengou, Niger in 1986 and 1987. The early and partially photo-sensitive cultivar HKB yielded more grain than the late and photo-sensitive cultivar Somno when planted with the first two seasonal rains. But after delayed planting, the crop growth rate and harvest index of cultivar HKB were reduced, leading to smaller grain yields even though the growth period, rainfall, radiation and temperature were similar at all the planting dates. In contrast, cultivar Somno maintained a small but stable harvest index over various planting dates, so that although its growth period and crop growth rate were reduced by delayed planting, the reduction in grain yield was less. Since agronomic manipulation, such as increased plant density and fertilizer application, can be used to increase crop growth rate, photo-sensitive millet genotypes such as cultivar Somno could be used for late July plantings in the Sudano-Sahelian zone.

Capsicum annuum var. aviculare is one of the most extremely hot chilies, measuring between 50,000 and 100,000 Scoville Units. In the present work we studied the growth and development of chiltepin (Mazocahui), under field conditions, inoculated with previously selected and cultivated native strains of Bacillus amyloliquefaciens and Azospirillum halopraeferens. The seed was inoculated by the vacuum technique, and later at 34, 120, 180 and 210 days after germination. A drip irrigation system with a salinity (TDS) = 0.8 ppt was used. The results show that germination is significantly favored by the promoter effect caused by the beneficial bacteria. These inoculants increased some parameters of growth and development. We found significant differences regarding the control for the total weight and length of root and stem of the plants, as well as the total content of proteins, and in some parts of the plant analyzed as stem and leaf. Both bacteria increased fruit yield in the Mazocahui genotype. Our findings suggest that the application of strains of Bacillus amyloliquefaciens and Azospirillum halopraeferens, influence the increase in yield of Capsicum annuum var. aviculare, under field conditions. In addition, the data show the usefulness of the inoculation of chiltepin seed for agricultural producers in semi-arid areas where salinity is a problem.

The results of studying the influence of various biological and mineral fertilizers: Phytop 8.67, Agrofit-humate-B (BKG «AFG-B”) – on the growth and development of plants, as well as the yield and quality of kiwano fruits of the Green Dragon variety are presented. During the study, phenological and morphological observations, accounting and evaluation of the quality of the obtained fruits, analysis of the chemical composition of the fruits were carried out. The obtained data confirmed the positive effect of the use of biological preparations on the structure and quality of the resulting crop of kiwano, which will allow us to recommend this crop for cultivation in the territory of the Novosibirsk region, using experimentally proven methods and norms of fertilizer application during the growing season of plants.

Selenium (Se) is an essential trace element for animals, microorganisms and some other eukaryotes. It has become increasingly evident that Se plays a significant role in reducing the incidence of lung, colorectal and prostate cancer in humans. Although there is evidence that selenium is needed for the growth of algae, the question of essentiality of Se in vascular plants is unresolved. Therefore Raphanus sativus (Se accumulator) and Capsicum annuum (non Se accumulator) were treated with 0-200 mg/l natrium-selenate. The results showed that lower (2 mg/l) concentration natrium-selenate increased the fitomass and total antioxodant capacity in seedlings.

In spite of the several good properties of peat, recently, some experiments were carried out with the aim of finding natural materials which can substitute for peat. According to the results, several inorganic and organic materials were proved to be suitable for this purpose. This study examines the effect of different organic materials (example: pine bark, composts, peats) on the growth and yield of green pepper (Capsicum annuum L., variety Danubia). We found that the most developed plants were grown in peat-mixtures and pine bark. The average fruit weight was the highest at those plants which were planted also in these media. The plants which were grown in composts fell short of our expectations in development and in yield, too.

Planting date plays important role in the growth, development and yield of maize. Optimum planting date has becomes a prime importance for higher crop production. The plant establishment as well as pest and disease incidence are affected by planting dates. Crop varieties respond differently to planting dates. Early or late planting dates on maize causes an array of morpho-anatomical, physiological and biochemical changes in plants, which affect plant growth and development and such changes may lead to a drastic reduction in yield. Maize growth and development involves numerous biochemical reactions which are sensitive to variance in weather parameters as affected by planting dates. Delayed planting dates affect traits namely anthesis silking interval, photosynthesis, physiological maturity and dry matter production due to reduction in cumulative interception of photosynthetically active radiation (PAR). Late planting dates cause higher non-structural carbohydrate concentration in stems at mid-grain filling stages due to low temperature exposure of crop limiting kernel growth and photosynthesis. The adverse effects of delayed planting dates can be mitigated by forecasting optimum planting dates through crop modeling experiments. This article summarizes various effects of planting dates on maize growth, development and yield parameters. This information may be useful for maize growers and researchers.

Salinity is one of the major issues that lead to a reduction in crop productivity. This study aimed to investigate the response of sweet pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) to saline soil. The research was conducted in Agricultural Research Field at Noakhali Science and Technology University during 2018-19 with two sweet pepper varieties as treatment named Red Army (V1) and California Wonder (V2). The results indicated that there were significant variations between the two varieties in different parameters of growth as well as yield performance. The result showed that between the treatments V2 (California Wonder) gave the higher yield ie., 10.65 ton/ha while V1(Red Army) produced 9.61 ton/ha. Moreover, the taller plants and longer fruit were obtained from the V2 which were 32.43 cm and 8.23 cm respectively. Even among the other parameters, V2 gave higher growth and development than V1. Furthermore, average single fruit weight/plant was recorded 76.33 g in California Wonder (V2) whereas Red Army (V1) provided 74.16 g. The finding of the experiment indicated that the overall better performance could be obtained from V2 California Wonder variety of sweet pepper. This study evaluated the varietal performance of two varieties and it can be said from the experiment that the California Wonder is the best variety for cultivation in saline region in Bangladesh.
