Recently, a friend of mine was surprised to discover the Instagram app on his cellphone. He soon learned that his teenage daughter had lost her phone and, even before figuring out how to get a new one, installed the app on his phone as a stop-gap solution. Having his phone appropriated in this way emboldened my friend to open the app and see what was going on in the social media universe his daughter seemed to prefer, vastly, to reality.

Various studies in the information technology revealed that there has been a change in the trend of internet use in recent years. Internet users in the world prefer to spend time accessing the internet through the social media. Social media with a variety of platforms provides special communities with their own uniqueness and allows users to share lots of content. The members involves creates a new social community with various phenomena, both positive and negative. Counselors in the millennium era are required to have the insight andknowledge that is qualified to deal with the well being conditions of individuals from activities in social media. Counselors are also required to have specific skills in providing handling with the condition of well being individuals related to the impact of activities on social media.

The article follows the narrative trend initiated by the social media posts and fake news during the first months of the corona quarantine, which claims that the decrease of contamination due to the quarantine has a positive effect on the environment and nature recovery. The author describes the context of the topic and follows the changes in the rhetoric through different genres, discussing the ways in which a picture can tell a truthful story. What is the relation between the context, truth, and rhetoric? This material spread globally, yet it was also readily “translated” into the Estonian context, and – what is very characteristic of the entire pandemic material – when approaching this material, truthful and fabricated texts, photos, and videos were combined. From the folkloristic point of view, these rumours in the form of fake news, first presented in the function of a tall tale and further following the sliding truth scale of legends, constitute a part of coping strategies, so-called crisis humour, yet, on the other hand, also a belief story presenting positive imagery, which surrounds the mainly apocalyptically perceived pandemic period and interprets the human existence on a wider scale. Even if these fake news and memes have no truth value, they communicate an idea – nature recovers – and definitely offer hope and a feeling of well-being.

Purpose The youth in present day India is the first generation to grow up within a world of pervasive technology. While several writers applaud these social network sites (SNSs) for transforming the social landscape of India, recent research is beginning to examine the destructive role of these SNSs. The purpose of this paper is to explore whether and to what extent social media contributes to decline in well-being, addictive behavior and other harmful social effects. Design/methodology/approach In the first phase, a structured questionnaire was sent via e-mail to 114 students. The second stage embraced an exploratory qualitative approach with in-depth interviews and reflections. As part of the third stage, the author devoted a lot of time reading the blogs and posts of the youth. Findings The analysis of qualitative data is presented in three major themes: patterns of usage, nature of online friendships and threat to well-being. Some of the respondents did experience “addiction-like” symptoms. It can be deduced that the respondents are not addicted to the medium per se; they are cultivating an addiction to certain activities they carry out online. Practical implications Indian newspapers have recently reported several cases how social media can mislead and corrupt the youth and some of these cases have ended in tragedy. This kind of obsessive behavior is extremely dangerous to the minds which are otherwise actually intelligent and ought to be stopped. Originality/value There is no doubt that the Indian youth is developing a dependence on this technological advance that fuses people all over the world. We are still in the infant stages of understanding these issues in the Indian context. This study adds value to the negligible empirical evidence in India till date.

W artykule analizujemy wpisy na Facebooku wyodrębnione ze względu na to, że ich autorzy nie tylko odwołują się do opinii osób czarnoskórych, ale również traktują uwzględnienie takich głosów jak wyraz troski o dobro drugiej osoby. Przyjmujemy, że wypowiedzi takie mogą stanowić akty zagrożenia wizerunku adresata (FTA) i badamy, w jaki stopniu autorzy wypowiedzi stosują strategie grzeczności językowej osłabiające to zagrożenie. Analiza ma charakter wyłącznie jakościowy i prowadzona jest z perspektywy interdyscyplinarnej, łączącej socjologię i językoznawstwo. You as value in the debate concerning the lexeme Murzyn Summary: The acceptability of the Polish M-word (corresponding to the N-word in English) has been debated in the social media. In the debate, the adversaries vary not only in their views, but also in ways they formulate and justify them. In the present paper, we analyze a sample of Facebook posts in which the authors not only express the opinions of Polish Blacks as a key argument in favor of rejecting the M-word, but also argue that giving hearing to Black voices shows regard for the well-being of the Other. On the other hand, we assume that such posts may constitute Face Threatening Acts against those who consider the M-word non-offensive. Therefore, we study the degree to which politeness strategies are employed by the authors to weaken this threat. The analysis presented in the paper is only qualitative, while the adopted interdisciplinary perspective draws on sociology and linguistics.

ABSTRACTIntroductionLittle is known about how sheltering in place to contain the spread of COVID-19 over extended periods affects individuals’ psychological well-being. This study’s objective was to analyze the factors associated with MSM’s (men who have sex with men) low psychological well-being in the COVID-19 pandemic context.MethodThis cross-sectional study was conducted online in the entire Brazilian territory (26 states and federal district) in April and May 2020. The participants were recruited using an adapted version of Respondent-Driven Sampling (RDS), and Facebook posts. Data were collected using social media and MSM dating apps. We estimated the prevalence, crude prevalence ratio (PR), and respective confidence intervals (CI95%).ResultsThe prevalence of low psychological well-being found in the sample was 7.9%. Associated factors were belonging to the youngest group (PR: 2.76; CI95%: 1.90-4.01), having polyamorous relationships (PR: 2.78; CI95%: 1.51-5.11), not complying with social isolation measures (PR: 6.27; CI95%: 4.42-8.87), not using the social media to find partners (PR: 1.63; CI95%: 1.06-2.53), having multiple sexual partners (PR: 1.80; CI95%: 1.04-3.11), having reduced the number of partners (PR: 2.67; CI95%: 1.44-4.95), and group sex (PR: 1.82; CI95%: 1.23-2.69)ConclusionThe well-being of MSM living in Brazil was negatively affected during the social distancing measures intended to control the spread of COVID-19. The variables that contributed the most to this outcome include social isolation, relationships established with partners, and sexual behavior.Policy ImplicationsPlanning and implementing public policies and actions to promote psychological well-being are needed to improve MSM’s resilience by adopting safe strategies and behavior.

Along with numerous studies of subjective well-being through sociological methods (first of all, surveys), attempts are being made to use Big Data, “digital footprints” (social media texts, social network profile information, search query statistics, personal electronic device data) as an additional source of information. Based on a review of foreign literature, the author reveals major practices of the social media texts analysis to measure subjective well-being. Including the experience of constructing the Gross National Happiness index for Facebook and the Hedonometer for Twitter based on the analysis of emotive vocabulary and the tone of publications of network users. Possibilities of searching for “digital traces” of life satisfaction in the social media texts are revealed. Methodological difficulties and limitations in that area of research, which have not yet been overcome, are highlighted: the issue of the obtained conclusions generalization and the validity of the constructed indices of “happiness” in their correlation with the “real” subjective well-being measured through surveys. Difficulties in measuring subjective well-being are associated with the effects of self-presentation in social media, varying degrees and strategies of users’ publication activity, imperfection of the analysis algorithms that are still inferior to “manual coding”.

Abstract Objectives To describe an e-Health intervention to improve vegetables and fruit intake among working Mexican adults, based on the Social Cognitive Theory. Methods We developed an e-Health intervention “neoser”, based on the Social Cognitive Theory and on results of a previous formative research conducted in a group of working adults. The main purpose of “neoser” is to increase vegetables and fruits intake (200 g per day, each). This study is a quasi-experimental pre-post single group. The participants recruitment will be carried out through e-posters by email and social media (Facebook and Instagram). Based on the literature, we consider a minimum sample size of 55 participants. “neoser” consists of 12 weekly sessions (nine educational sessions and three workshops) applying nine behavior change techniques targeting the constructs of the SCT. Strategies include support groups, reinforcement activities, a recipe book, and a handbook with activities and extra information to reinforce acquired knowledge and skills. “neoser” will be implemented through social media (Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp), Zoom sessions, website and YouTube channel. The sessions will last 45 minutes with 20 participants, maximum, per session. Participants will complete online questionnaires to evaluate knowledge and constructs of the SCT, and 3-day dietary records; anthropometric measured and biochemical assessments will be obtained at baseline and at the end of the intervention. The main results are the vegetables and fruit intake, constructs of the SCT and knowledge. The secondary results are weight, height, waist and hip circumference, body water and fat, muscle mass and biochemical analyzes (lipids profile and blood glucose). The comparison of the results will be performed using t-test, chi-square, confidence intervals and analysis of variance), with a significance level of P < 0.05. Results Not apply Conclusions This intervention could contribute to the adoption and maintenance of vegetables and fruit consumption in Mexican workers and promote the use of e-Health interventions as global well-being digital strategies. The emergence and rapid spread of SARS-CoV-2 across the globe has caused a state of panic and chaos. Self-quarantine and lockdowns have been implemented in many countries leaving the public homebound. On one hand social media being a prime source of information, it could have a substantial contribution in causing unnecessary apprehension and fear in the public due to the speculations and misinformation, while on the other hand the unexpected event of lockdown resulted in a spurt of social media usage. The adverse effect of social media on psychological well-being, academic performance, socializing skills, interpersonal relationship and parenting were recorded by a number of studies in the past. It is imperative to be mindful of the content being watched and the time spent on social media. The study aims to understand the variation in social media usage in different age groups in the people of Hyderabad, India due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The survey was conducted through a questionnaire that was created using Google forms. The study shows that the social media usage has significantly increased in the people of Hyderabad, India during the COVID-19 lockdown. The data shows a correlation between the age groups and variation in social media usage. The increased social media usage is more in the younger age groups below 25 years. The study proves no impact of social media usage on productivity during the quarantine

Social media usage among young people has grown astronomically, generating interest among a number of interest groups. This chapter fills a gap on social media psychosocial antecedents propelling high-usage behavior and the subsequent psychosocial outcomes showing in attachment to the social media. The chapter explored the emergent psychosocial needs driving young people's level of usage in social media and the consequences, among a population in Ghana. The findings revealed that young consumers' social media behavior could be greatly influenced by their social psychological needs, but individual psychological variables did not significantly predict usage behavior in social media. The findings also suggest that young people are more emotionally attached to social media, slightly attached cognitively and not attached behaviorally. This implies young people have developed some level of emotional involvement for the use of social media which could affect their well-being positively or negatively.

Interdisciplinary research has faced many challenges, including institutional, cultural and practical ones, while it has also been reported as a ‘career risk’ and even ‘career suicide’ for researchers pursuing such an education and approach. Yet, the propagation of challenges and risks can easily lead to a feeling of anxiety and disempowerment in researchers, which we think is counterproductive to improving interdisciplinarity in practice. Therefore, in the search of ‘bright spots’, which are examples of cases in which people have had positive experiences with interdisciplinarity, this study assesses the perceptions of researchers on interdisciplinarity on the social media platform Twitter. The results of this study show researchers’ many positive experiences and successes of interdisciplinarity, and, as such, document examples of bright spots. These bright spots can give reason for optimistic thinking, which can potentially have many benefits for researchers’ well-being, creativity and innovation, and may also inspire and empower researchers to strive for and pursue interdisciplinarity in the future.
