Examining the Psychosocial Dimensions of Young People's Emergent Social Media Behavior

Social media usage among young people has grown astronomically, generating interest among a number of interest groups. This chapter fills a gap on social media psychosocial antecedents propelling high-usage behavior and the subsequent psychosocial outcomes showing in attachment to the social media. The chapter explored the emergent psychosocial needs driving young people's level of usage in social media and the consequences, among a population in Ghana. The findings revealed that young consumers' social media behavior could be greatly influenced by their social psychological needs, but individual psychological variables did not significantly predict usage behavior in social media. The findings also suggest that young people are more emotionally attached to social media, slightly attached cognitively and not attached behaviorally. This implies young people have developed some level of emotional involvement for the use of social media which could affect their well-being positively or negatively.

Social media is a modern innovation for effective communication. Researchers are investigating a useful framework to integrate social media in an educational setting of deaf and blind students. Deaf or hearing impaired and visually impaired people have poor communication skills that cause lowered social interactions and make them feel isolated. The current study aimed at evaluating the social media usage pattern among the deaf or hard of hearing and visually impaired students. The findings revealed that the majority of the students used Whatsapp for communication purposes. Furthermore, the use of social media bolstered communication among the deaf or hearing impaired and visually impaired students with ordinary people. The study revealed that the primary motivation behind social media usage was social interaction. The social media usage pattern was found to be statistically significant with the motivation behind usage. The social media usage pattern was also statistically significant with the experienced benefits of increased communication. Moreover, the study also revealed that students had learned something from social media usage. These associations were found to be statistically significant at P≤0.05.

The paper focuses on how social media usage by children determines their interactions with consumer brands. First it describes how and when young children develop brand awareness and which are the most important predictors of this development. Those findings are then put in connection with the impact of social media. We elaborate on a deeper level how children approach online communications with brands in the social media context. Our assumptions are supported by a research conducted on a group of New Zealand children, both boys and girls in the age group of 11-14 years. This qualitative approach was implemented using in-depth interviews and identifies three key modes of brand interaction behaviour when young consumers use social media. According to these findings we assume that there is a connection between the use of social media and children´s relationship with consumer brands.

This study aimed to shed the light on the role of Social Media usage in the innovative behavior through the recent information technology (IT) in the organizations specialized in the information and communication technology (ICT) field. The study population consisted of the ICT organizations operating in Jordan as affiliated with the Information and Communication Technology Association (INTAJ) amounting to 161 organization. The analysis unit consisted of the managers in the top and middle level. The study relied on the simple random sample; and it reached a number of conclusions the most important of which is that the perceptions by respondents of the independent variable Social Media Usage were medium; and the same applies to all its dimensions. The dependent variable Innovative Behavior was also medium, as well as all its dimensions. As for the mediator variable IT, the respondents' perceptions were high, along with all its dimensions. The study indicated that there is a statistically significant impact for the Social Media usage with its component on the innovative behavior. Also, it was found that a statistically significant impact for the Social Media usage with its component on the innovative behavior through the IT in the organizations operating in the ICT field in Jordan. These conclusions indicated that there is an opportunity for the ICT organizations to promote its innovative behavior through the Social Media usage. Based on the reached conclusions, the study concluded a set of recommendations the most important of which is that the awareness should be increased with respect to the capacities that are available due to the use of the Social Media as well as the advantages that can be utilized by the ICT organizations in Jordan through this use; the organization should well utilize the Social Media usage especially the Groups and Sharing by taking the necessary decision that lead to the activation of the Social Media role in the various phases of the innovative behavior; and the need for the organizations to direct the use of Social Media through the dissemination of a culture of innovation based on the use of Social Media.

This study examines the social media usage of Malaysian millennials in planning their domestic holidays. This study integrated the theory of planned behaviour (TPB) and technology acceptance model (TAM) variables by adding electronic word-of-mouth (e-WOM), as it is a crucial factor influencing the travel industry nowadays. Data were collected from 301 Malaysians. The results show that e-WOM is the greatest antecedent influencing Malaysian millennials to use social media in planning their domestic holidays. Local tourism organizations such as Tourism Malaysia could gain an understanding of the issue through this study, and the promotion of local tourism through social media could be developed to reach millennials in Malaysia.

AbstractIntroduction:This study investigates the influence of gender and social networking sites (SNSs) such as Instagram, YouTube, WhatsApp, Facebook, and Twitter on consuming, creating, and sharing content within the educational social media usage behaviors of higher education students. The survey method is applied to measure students’ social media usage for educational purposes. So that a more effective use of social media in education can be provided, it is important to understand how university students vary in their educational use of social media. The aim of this study is to examine how higher education students use social media for their educational purposes based on the content and activities with which the students engage. The aim of the research is to determine the correlations, if any, between gender, preferred SNS type, and educational social media in regard to consuming, creating and sharing content.Methods:The derived scale is administered in Turkey with the participation of a total of 365 university students. Psychometric, validation and reliability analysis of the scale which is used in the study to collect the data were done first. Principal component analysis, exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis, descriptive, correlations and multivariate analysis of variance are applied to analyze the social media usage for educational purposes. Gender and the SNS type were set as the additional predictors of the consuming, creating and sharing content on social media.Results:The validation and linguistic adaptation of the Inside School Social Media Behavior (ISSMB) scale from English to Turkish is performed first. Results showed that the three factors of the original scale were confirmed. Secondly, the derived scale is administered with the participation of a total of 365 university students. Results indicated that gender difference was a significant factor in explaining the content creation on social media. Instagram, WhatsApp, and YouTube are the most preferred SNSs for educational use among students at the higher education level. No significant effect was reported for the type of the SNS used in consuming, creating, and sharing educational content on social media. The type of the SNS used by the students was not found to influence educational social media usage; accordingly, students consume, create and share content, regardless of the type of the SNS they use.Discussion:Higher education level students prefer watching videos more than any other social media activity for their educational purposes. The second most frequently preferred social media usage activity was reported as searching for the learning resources or information pertaining to schoolwork. Creating content was the least favorable social media usage. When the social media usage purposes focus on schoolwork and are furthermore educational, males’ social media usage outperforms the females. Thus, males were more likely to create content by using social media for inside schoolwork purposes than the females. Males were also more likely to have sharing habits than the females in sharing learning resources e.g., class notes with their classmates by using social media for their inside schoolwork purposes.Limitations:The total number of participants used in the research sample is a limitation of this study. The study data were only collected in Turkey, and so the study results are only regionally generalizable.Conclusion:Higher education students are consumers of the social media when they use it for educational purposes. Accordingly, students prefer being “passive consumer social media users who avoid active content creating”. Students prefer watching the uploaded ready-to-watch videos who avoid instead of creating and uploading their own video content. When sharing items are compared with creating content items, students responded more to the latter. Students do share their information with classmates e.g. exam schedules and lecture notes. Compared to other sharing content usages, students less frequently preferred sharing extracurricular learning resources. The gender difference found herein is a predictor of social networking site usage among young people, and social networking usage changes according to gender. Males are reported as being more “giving” within a school setting when it comes to sharing the educational content with their colleagues and friends. Social media is a reality of our modern lives, one that is growing exponentially; it is highly crucial that researchers facilitate a better understanding of the ongoing changes and developments that are emerging and transforming learning.Both outside and inside school, the social media usage behaviors of young people can be examined according to different age groups do determine any age-related differences. The subject can be improved with new findings and results from different sample groups.

Abstrak: Memasuki era transformasi digital ditahun 2021, perkembangan teknologi komunikasi terutama media sosial sudah sangat pesat dan tak terbatas. Dalam dunia yang semakin canggih ini dibeberapa daerah di Indonesia masih beberapa daerah yang belum dapat mengoptimalkan media sosial salah satunya di desa Kampil RT 06 RW02 Kecamatan Wiradesa. Ditengah perkembangan teknologi komunikasi saat ini pemuda Desa Kampil RT 06 RW 02 masih mengandalkan pekerjaan mereka sebagai buruh bangunan, petani, pedagang rumahan, dan juga merantau ke kota lain dengan pekerjaan serupa bahkan ada yang tidak memiliki pekerjaan. Hal tersebut tentu menjadi masalah yang harus diselesaikan, tertutama bagi kalangan pemuda agar kedepannya desa kampil RT 06 menjadi desa yang sejahtera di bidang ekonomi. Dalam penyelesaian masalah ini, metode yang digunakan adalah metode training atau pelatihan. Teknologi komunikasi terutama kehadiran media sosial yang ada ditengah masyarakat saat ini dapat menjadi jalan keluar dari masalah tersebut. Dalam memanfaatkan teknologi itu sendiri yang cenderung menguasai dalam penggunaan teknologi komunikasi biasanya adalah pemuda, untuk itu pemuda adalah sasaran dalam penyelesaian masalah ini. Pelatihan yang dialakukan adalah dengan pengenalan media sosial, pemanfaatan media sosial untuk promosi dan bagaimana optimalisasi media sosial dalam mempromosikan produk dan jasa. Dampak yang muncul dari pelatihan ini adalah pemuda lebih memahami fungsi media sosial dan dapat memanfaatkan media sosial untuk keperluan promosi.Abstract: Entering the digital transformation era in 2021, communication technology, especially social media, is very fast and unlimited. In this increasingly sophisticated world, in some areas in Indonesia, there are still some areas that have not been able to optimize one of the social media in Kampil village, RT 06 RW02, Wiradesa sub-district. In the development of communication technology, the youth of Kampil Village RT 06 RW 02 still rely on their work as construction workers, farmers, home traders, and also migrate to other cities with similar jobs and some even do not have jobs. This is certainly a problem that must be resolved, especially for the youth so that in the future Kampil Village RT 06 becomes a prosperous village in the economic field. In solving this problem, the method used is the method of training or training. Communication technology, especially the presence of social media in today's society can be a way out of this problem. In utilizing the technology itself, those who master the use of communication technology are usually young people, for that youth are the targets in solving this problem. The training carried out is with the introduction of social media, the use of social media for and how to optimize social media in promoting products and services. The impact that emerged from this training was that young people better understood the function of social media and could use social media for promotional purposes.

The emergence and rapid spread of SARS-CoV-2 across the globe has caused a state of panic and chaos. Self-quarantine and lockdowns have been implemented in many countries leaving the public homebound. On one hand social media being a prime source of information, it could have a substantial contribution in causing unnecessary apprehension and fear in the public due to the speculations and misinformation, while on the other hand the unexpected event of lockdown resulted in a spurt of social media usage. The adverse effect of social media on psychological well-being, academic performance, socializing skills, interpersonal relationship and parenting were recorded by a number of studies in the past. It is imperative to be mindful of the content being watched and the time spent on social media. The study aims to understand the variation in social media usage in different age groups in the people of Hyderabad, India due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The survey was conducted through a questionnaire that was created using Google forms. The study shows that the social media usage has significantly increased in the people of Hyderabad, India during the COVID-19 lockdown. The data shows a correlation between the age groups and variation in social media usage. The increased social media usage is more in the younger age groups below 25 years. The study proves no impact of social media usage on productivity during the quarantine

The chapter assesses the social media usage by tourists during their visit to religious tourism destinations and evaluates rationale and challenges faced by religious tourism establishments and other stakeholders in using social media as tools for marketing of religious tourism. The study used secondary data sources for getting a theoretical understanding of social media and religious tourism. Primary data conveniently collected through field survey from tourists and tourism establishment at religious tourism destination to know the extent of social media usage. The chapter indicating increased use of social media by tourists in searching, planning, booking, and sharing experiences about different products and services. The study identifies a crucial role of social media in the marketing and development of religious tourism along with certain challenges related to using as a mechanism to promote destination. Finally, implication and recommendations for different stakeholders were given to ensure adequate presence on social in more effective manner.

The paper tries to explore the awareness of how the present Generation Z is using the social media as well as to review its repercussion on them as an individual’s, organization and society as a system. The paper demarcates Generation Z from other branches of generation with a systematized differentiation in the behaviour, principles and choices which are constant over the time. It outlines their social media usage and intra-generational difference springing from environmental factors and personal factors. Personal factors are divided into steady and driving factors. The paper brings forward how the futuristic Generation Z’s use of social media influences them as an individual’s, organization and society. It also attempts to bring forward certain managerial repercussions and to them and a research outline. Earlier researches on access of social media by Generation Y as well as Generation Z give rise to certain queries which are yet to be answered. They laid focus mainly on the US & UK, ignoring other regions and countries (including nation like India which comprises of 28% of youths) with huge and rapidly increasing share of Generation Y’s & Z’s populations; and where the determinants of social-media usability would vary considerably; the customer set under these studies are those whose behaviour are inclined to vary as they move on the different phases of their life cycle; they tried to understand Generation Z’s social media use but misses to look at the controllers as well as aftermaths of social-media usage. The theoretical frame of reference brought forward in this paper harvests a thorough set of investigation questions and designs the pathway for considering the predecessors & outcomes of social networking used by Gen Z. It tries to identify certain ignored queries regarding Gen Z’s and their social media usability, along with also sketches practical insights for various decision makers.

Social Media has made its’ way of playing an important role in e-Government implementation strategies. Many governments include social media as a tool to approach and engage its’ citizens, to increase transparency, trust and online participation. Although social media is not yet fully understood by governments on how to effectively utilize social media as a tool to be beneficial to the government and the general public. This research focuses on the Social Media activity of the Government Departments of Suriname. With around 1.9 billion active users, Facebook is one of the largest social media platforms in the world. This study furthers analyzes how active social media accounts are being used by the departments and how online users respond to departmental online activities. In order to achieve the goal of this paper, the 14 social media accounts of Suriname government departments will be taken as a case study. Several accounts indicate that government to citizen engagement show much potential for citizens’ active online participation. While the use of social media in e-Government initiatives is a feasible approach to successful implementation, there are still some improvement governments should take into consideration to increase online participation and fulfilling the needs of their citizens.
