The aim of this case report is to present a case of nasal adenocarcinoma in a young adult cat with underlying feline asthma. A 4-year-old, 2.3 kg, female Oriental Shorthair was referred to Massey University Veterinary Teaching Hospital with a rapidly expanding mass on its left nasal bridge and nasal discharge. Physical examination revealed stertorous respiratory sounds and a mass on the left nasal bridge measuring 3.2cm x 2.5 cm. Computed tomography of the nasal cavity showed mass effect in the left frontal sinus with extensive orbital bone lysis and loss of calvarial bone. Radiographs of the thorax showed possible evidence of metastasis. Fine needle aspirate was performed on the mass and also regional lymph nodes. Subsequently, nasal adenocarcinoma was diagnosed through cytology. Prognosis of the patient was poor as the patient’s condition was significantly complicated by asthma and possible lung metastasis. Palliative treatment was pursued using meloxicam as radiotherapy was not a viable option in this case.

Squamous cell carcinoma of the canine nasal cavity and frontal sinus was diagnosed in eight cases between May 1988 and April 1994. The most common presenting complaints were nasal discharge, including epistaxis; sneezing; and facial deformity or exophthalmos. Metastasis was not identified in any case, but bone lysis and invasion into tissues outside the nasal cavity were noted in five cases. Computed tomograms were performed in five cases and were more useful than radiographs in determining the extent of neoplastic involvement. Euthanasia was performed within one week of diagnosis in three cases at the owner's request; one case died at home within one month; and the remaining four cases were euthanized within eight months due to progressive clinical signs. The mean survival time in these eight cases was three months, with a range of zero weeks to eight months.

Contagious respiratory tumors of sheep and goats are epithelial neoplasms of the lung and nasal cavities. They are associated with oncogenic betaretroviruses known as jaagsiekte sheep retrovirus and enzootic nasal tumor retrovirus of sheep and goats. We investigated the presence of the envelope protein (ENV) of these retroviruses in retropharyngeal and mediastinal lymph nodes using a specific monoclonal antibody by immunohistochemistry methods, single-labeled or combined with ovine B or T lymphocytes or macrophage cell markers. Samples of lymph nodes, fixed in formalin and zinc fixative, were obtained from paraffin-embedded material. Four groups of samples were used: 24 natural cases of ovine pulmonary adenocarcinoma (OPA), 13 of enzootic nasal adenocarcinoma of sheep (ENAS), 19 of enzootic nasal adenocarcinoma of goats (ENAG), and 14 control samples. ENV was detected by single labeling in cortical lymphoid follicles. Six of 24 OPA samples were positive and only in those from sheep with extensive neoplasia. Immunolabeling was detected in 5/13 ENAS and 10/19 ENAG samples. Positive labeling was found either in the intercellular spaces, membranes, or cytoplasm of cells in follicles. Control samples were not correspondingly labeled. Double immunohistochemistry demonstrated co-labeling of ENV and CD21 (B cells and follicular dendritic cells) in all samples, CD14 (macrophage) in OPA samples, and Pax-5 (B cells) in ENAG samples, but not with CD8 or CD4 (T lymphocytes). These results demonstrate the presence of betaretrovirus ENV proteins in nontumor cells in regional lymph nodes in sheep and goats with contagious respiratory tumors.

Background: The hard palate is a thin horizontal bony plate made up of two bones of the facial skeleton, located on the roof of the mouth. The bones are the palatine process of the maxilla and the horizontal plate of the palatine bone. The hard palate spans the alveolar arch formed by the alveolar process that holds the upper teeth (when these are developed). If cancer is detected early, the overall 5-year survival rate for all persons is 85 percent. If cancer has progressed to other tissues or organs, as well as regional lymph nodes, the overall 5-year survival rate is 67%. Objective: Want to highlight the importance of primary prevention; education on risks of alcohol/tobacco use and oral hygiene. Secondary prevention; Early biopsy of any ulceration of the hard palate that does not regress with medical treatment. This would allow early diagnosis and minimal treatment with less morbidity and better survival chances. Case Presentation: A male of 58 yrs. old came with Pain in the mouth, difficulty in breathing, difficulty in mastication, difficulty in deglutition, balm application, change in voice tooth exfoliation, lack of appetite. Aggravates on mastication, difficulty in deglutition for 2 months, burning sensation on the consumption of spicy food for 2 months change in voice, nasal discharge, loss of appetite, weight loss, tooth exfoliation in the upper front region of jaw, and balm application (2-3episodes, 15 days back). All necessary investigations were carried out such as X-ray, MRI, CT scan, a biopsy of the tissue sample, and diagnosed Carcinoma on the Hard Palate. Treatment of this patient received antiemetic, analgesic, antibiotic, vitamin supplementary. Prognosis: After treatment, the patient shows great improvement. Conclusion: The therapeutic management for malignant tumors of the hard palate is essentially surgical, with or without postoperative radiotherapy, discussed on a case-by-case basis. The survival rate depends on several factors, including early diagnosis, histological characteristics and appropriate management. When ca of the palate is detected primary, the management is very effective.

Background: Transmissible venereal tumors (TVT) are naturally occurring neoplasms that can be transmitted through copulation or cell transplantation. It is a disease that affects canines, has no preference for sex or breed, and generally noticed in the external genital apparatus. Extragenital occurrence may eventually be seen; however, nasal involvement has been described in only a few reports of studies conducted in Brazil. Therefore, the objective of this study is to report 3 cases of nasal TVT in dogs who were treated in 2 municipalities in the mountainous region of Santa Catarina, Brazil.Cases: This case report includes 3 male mixed-breed canines of age 3-13. Only 1 of the animals was castrated. As per the medical history, some points, such as an enlarged nasal region, sneezing, nasal discharge, and hoarseness, reported by the dogs’ respective owners were similar among all the dogs. Likewise, nosebleed was observed on physical examination in all the cases. The result of cytological examination was inconclusive only in 1 case. Rhinoscopy, incisional biopsy, and histopathological examination were then performed for achieving a definitive diagnosis. In the 2 cases wherein cytology gave conclusive results, the cytological smears showed changes suggestive of TVT, such as cells with eccentric nuclei and little cytoplasm, which had vacuoles inside them. In 2 cases, radiographic examinations of the skull were also performed. The images showed changes in bone radiopacity, conformation of trabeculae with areas of bone lysis and cell proliferation, and irregularity in the contour of the nasal bone. After TVT diagnosis was confirmed, chemotherapy was initiated using vincristine at a dose of 0.75 mg/m2 for 2 cases and 0.025 mg/kg for the remaining case. The number of chemotherapy sessions and duration of treatment until the resolution of lesions and clinical signs varied as per the differences in the patients’ blood counts performed prior to each session.Discussion: TVT occurs between 1 and 7 years of life. It occurs more frequently in sexually active animals and has no preference for breed. Of the 3 cases reported herein, only one of the patients was elderly. All the patients were male mixed-breed dogs, and only 1 of them was castrated. The implantation of neoplastic cells through natural mounts, licks, scratches, or bites of affected areas are the most widely accepted reasons for the transmission of this neoplasm. With regard to the nasal presentation described in the present report, it is hypothesized that the smelling or licking of the neoplastic areas by the animal may favor cell implantation, leading to the subsequent development of a tumor. Nasal TVT should be considered as a differential diagnosis for dogs with chronic symptoms of the upper respiratory tract, such as increased local volume, nasal discharge, nosebleed, and sneezing. These signs are consistent with those described in this report. Radiographic evaluation was performed in 2 cases and both showed changes in bone radiopacity and trabeculae conformation, in addition to areas of bone lysis and cell proliferation, which are common in neoplastic processes. A presumptive diagnosis can be achieved from the medical history, clinical signs, and physical examination. Cytological and histopathological examination are the confirmatory methods; however, it is used less frequently and especially when cytological evaluation does not provide a definitive diagnosis. Antineoplastic chemotherapy with vincristine is the first-choice treatment protocol, which also proved to be effective for the patients in this report. Background: The experience of a mother of a child with a foreign body stuck in its nasal cavity can be quite panicky and horrifying. The nasal foreign bodies are one of the commonest emergencies in the department of otorhinolaryngology. The common foreign body objects that are removed from the nasal cavity includes beads, pencil butts, peas or other grains, seeds, sponge, stones, paper bits, erasers, metallic objects, crayons, batteries.Methods: An observational prospective study was performed at the department of otorhinolaryngology, government medical college, Kathua, Jammu and Kashmir. In this study we examined 120 cases of foreign body nose that had presented to us from March 2019 up to March 2020. Once detected a written consent was obtained from the patient’s attendants after duly explaining the involved risks to the child. Thereafter the foreign bodies were removed using appropriate instruments. Microsoft Excel tool were used to analyze and interpretate the data.Results: Amongst the 120 patients, there were 23 adults and 97 children under 10 years. Study included 72 males and 48 females. The 86 patients had a clear history of foreign body insertion. The 12 patients were brought to our OPD with history of a long standing unilateral nasal discharge. The 12 patients had presented with history of epistaxis. Eight patients had presented with headache and recurrent episodes of rhinorrhea. Two cases presented with symptoms of pain over the nasal bridge and swelling.  In our study 86% of the patients were brought with a history of foreign body insertion and only 14% a foreign body was detected when the child had presented to the outpatient department with nasal complaints. Amongst the patients 88 of them (74%) had presented with foreign bodies in their right nostril.Conclusions: Any history of insertion of a foreign body inside the nose should be thoroughly investigated. Appropriate clinical examination and diagnostic nasal endoscopy (wherever indicated) should be done. Appropriate instrument should be selected and used for foreign body removal.

The aim of this study was to examine the expression of caspase-3, caspase-7, caspase-9 and cytokeratin AE-1/AE-3 using the avidin-biotin complex (ABC) immunoperoxidase technique in 20 goats with enzootic nasal adenocarcinoma (ENA). Clinically, dyspnoea and nasal discharge were observed in all cases. Macroscopically, polypoid and sessile masses were seen in the ethmoidal area. At the histopathological examination, tubular, papillary and mixed patterns of ENA were diagnosed. Immunohistochemically, strong positive reactions were generally seen for caspase-3, while strong to moderate and slight reactions were observed for caspase-7 and caspase-9 in the cytoplasm of the tumour cells. Positive reactions for cytokeratin AE-1/AE-3 were only seen in epithelial cells. In addition, the causative agent of ENA, retrovirus, was detected immunohistochemically in tumour cells.

Background: Fungal infection of the nose and paranasal sinuses is an uncommon condition which is now being increasingly recognized. The clinical presentation is not specific with various symptoms such as nasal obstruction, purulent nasal discharge, facial pain, and chronic cough. Only unilaterality may alert the clinician. Purpose: To find the morphological characteristics of the fungus in patients with paranasal sinus fungus ball. Methods: A retrospective study of 13 paranasal sinus fungus balls cases which underwent endoscopic sinus surgery at Department of Otorhinolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery St. Vincentius A Paulo Hospital Surabaya from March, 2012 until December, 2013. Age, sex, histopathology and fungal cultur were analysed. Histopathologic sections of all the patients were stained with hematoxylin and eosin (H&E), and Gomori methenamine silver (GMS). The specimens were then cultured on Sabouraud dextrose agar plates and incubated at 30°C for 1 month. At the end of the incubation period, the samples were evaluated microscopically to detect fungi and identify their species. Results: The age reported of the 13 patients, was ranging from 36 to 63 years old. There was a significant female predominance, 10 female patients (76.92%) and 3 male patients (23.08%). Histopathological examination showed that most causative agents were Aspergillus species 92.31% (12/13). Culture test was positive for 69.23% (9/13). Aspergillus niger (61.54%, 8/13) is the most frequent fungus reported to cause fungus balls. Conclusion: Pattern of histopathologic on HE and GMS is very helpful and sensitive to identify fungi. The most common isolated mould in our study was Aspergillus niger.Keywords: fungus ball, histopathology and culture, Aspergillus nigerABSTRAK Latar Belakang: Infeksi jamur di hidung dan sinus paranasal merupakan kondisi yang jarang terjadi, namun kini lebih sering ditemukan. Gejala klinisnya tidak spesifik dapat berupa obstruksi hidung, sekret dari hidung, nyeri wajah, dan batuk kronis. Bila terjadi unilateral, patut diwaspadai oleh para klinisi. Tujuan: Untuk mengetahui karakteristik morfologi fungus yang didapati pada pasien sinusitis jamur yang kami teliti. Metode: Dilakukan penelitian retrospektif pada 13 pasien sinusitis jamur yang menjalani bedah sinus endoskopi di Departemen Otorinolaringologi-Kepala Leher Rumah Sakit St. Vincentius A Paulo Surabaya dari bulan Maret 2012 sampai dengan Desember 2013. Dilakukan analisis usia, jenis kelamin, histopatologi dan kultur jamur. Pewarnaan preparat histopatologi menggunakan Hematoxylin dan eosin (H&E) dan Gomori Methenamine Silver (GMS). Kemudian spesimen diletakkan pada piring agar Sabouraud dextrose, dan dilakukan inkubasi pada suhu 30°C selama satu bulan. Pada akhir masa inkubasi, sampel dievaluasi dengan mikroskop untuk mendeteksi jamur dan spesiesnya. Hasil: Didapati usia 13 penderita berkisar dari 36-63 tahun. Wanita lebih dominan sebanyak 10 penderita (76,92 %) dan 3 penderita laki-laki (23,08%). Hasil pemeriksaan histopatologi menunjukkan spesies Aspergillus sebagai penyebab utama (92,31%) pada 12 penderita (12/13).Tes kultur positif pada 69,23% (9/13). Jamur yang paling sering menyebabkan bola jamur pada sinus adalah Aspergillus niger (61,54%, 8/13). Kesimpulan: Pewarnaan preparat histopatologi menggunakan Hematoxylin dan eosin (H&E) dan Gomori Methenamine Silver (GMS) sangat berguna dan sensitif dalam mendeteksi adanya jamur. Jenis jamur yang paling banyak ditemukan pada penelitian kami adalah Aspergillus niger.
