In order to make its orientation of University of Applied Science (UAS) a success, INES is required to operate a complete shift in the philosophy and methodology of providing its educational services. One of the suitable methodologies for UAS is the Problem Based Learning (PBL). Despite various trainings on the matter and verbal encouragements from the top leaders, PBL is still not officially adopted and/or systematically practiced at INES. Besides, up to this date, no explicit strategic moves were adopted to ensure consistent and systematic implementation of PBL approach. This paper aims at laying the foundation to an action research geared towards developing strategic priorities for effective implementation of PBL in INES context. A pure qualitative approach was used. Data were collected from a sample of purposively selected students representatives and Deans of Faculties, using brainstorming technique. Identified strengths of INES include the leadership will regarding implementation of applied Science orientation, systematization of field visits, existence of adequate infrastructure, many young teaching staff etc. The fact that PBL is not applied in any other private university, labor market situation and needs, existence of innovative development programs at the country level were some identified opportunities. Challenges identified include lack of financial means, low level of English, staff turnover and many students who likely do not know what they exactly want. Three strategic goals namely (1) INES curricula are adapted to PBL, (2) the teaching, learning and assessment practices are aligned to PBL and/or its variants’ requirements, and (3) staff experience and competences are sustained as well as some specific strategic actions were proposed for implementing PBL in INES context. The paper ends recognizing that there is need to further the research using action research strategy in order to come up with generalizable and validated strategic priorities

The paper describes the process and outcomes of an action research project with the aim of determining whether focusing classroom input on voiced and unvoiced consonant sounds has a positive effect on their production. Statistics were derived from English-speaking respondents listening to native Arabic speaking participants from an experimental group, who had received input on the difference between these sounds, and practiced their production, as well as to speakers from a control group who had received neither input nor practice. The rates of intelligibility were compared, with the conclusion being that the provision of limited input on this pronunciation issue does not, generally speaking, result in the ability to produce the sounds with greater clarity.

Purpose: This article was intended to share and reflect on experiences concerning the education for sustainable development (ESD) project at Hongqiao Kindergarten in Shanghai. The project aimed to explore how ESD could be implemented in a current curriculum and to provide useful examples of educational activities and experiences. Design/Approach/Methods: The action research included two cycles with four steps. The first cycle involved the integration of ESD into a traditional science curriculum. The second cycle involved the validation and optimization of the ESD objectives. The implementation strategies were reviewed and refined. Findings: First, a variety of strategies can be used to identify the theme and choose the content. Second, the objectives should be developed on children’s life experiences and interests. Third, the idea of ESD can be implemented in multiple ways. Fourth, a reasonable objective system involving ESD was constructed for children by ages. Fifth, there were many effective ways to integrate ESD activities into other domains of curriculum. The challenges and implications were also discussed. Originality/Value: The study had a positive effect on teachers’ ability to practice ESD. This was a pioneer project in early childhood education in China, which provided valuable information for those aiming to implement ESD practices in Chinese kindergartens.

The fear of academic failure can compound other challenges that students are already facing in their lives, and this can take a toll on their mental and emotional states, their relationships with others, and their learning capacities. This article presents findings of an action research that was carried out with 35 postgraduate students from two classes, with aims to reframe their conception of fear of failure as valuable lesson opportunities, by means of getting them to participate in experiential and purposeful activities in a safe learning space. It aims to see if these students would have become less fearful of failures by Week 15. In addition to sharing personal anecdotes of failure, students were given challenging class work, reminded of failure-success catch-phrases, given honest and critical (but compassionate) feedback of their performance. The collected data include students’ fear of failure index scores, pre (Week 1) and post (Week 15) intervention course feedback of their fear of failure. The analysis shows that the methods seem to have a positive effect in mitigating fears of failure, however, the research also shows some caveats and variables that can inhibit the facilitation and the effectiveness of the pedagogical methods. It is hoped this research can also aid other educators in improving and innovating their pedagogy practices, in order to help students reframe their conceptions of failure.   Keywords: Action research, experiential learning, fear of failure, reframing beliefs, safe learning space   Cite as: Yoong, D., & Saffari, N.
