The research aims to find out the types of code-mixing used by English Education Department students during their presentation activity in the classroom in STKIP Paracendekia NW Sumbawa and to identify why did the students used the code-mixing. The participants of this research were 4 English Department students of STKIP Paracendekia NW Sumbawa. This research used observation, audio recording, and interview techniques in collecting the data. The result showed that there were two types of code mixing that used by English students in the presentation process, namely insertion code mixing, and alternation code mixing. Insertion code mixing was the dominant type that used by English students in the presentation process. There were 32 utterances categorized as insertion code mixing, and 9 utterances were categorized as alternation code mixing. While the reasons of student using code mixing in the presentation process were mostly because of the situation and lack of vocabulary.

This research investigates and analyses pronunciation errors made by the students of English Education Department at IKIP Budi Utomo Malang. Errors in students’ pronunciation are  crucial problems among foreign language teacher, especially English teacher. This research aims at investigating and finally finding out pronunciation errors made by the English students of S-1. The subjects of the study are the S-1 English students in academic period 2019/2020 that total 40 students who took dictation course in the third semester. The data of the study are a group of students’ pronunciation or speech sounds. Based on the description above, there are two important problems proposed in terms of kinds of pronunciation errors and causes of pronunciation errors. Of the data analysis carried out, it is found out that kinds and causes of pronunciation errors which are classified into significant and non-significant errors. There are four causes of pronunciation errors, namely (1) some differences of speech sounds between English and Indonesian; (2) the same phonetic features which have the different distribution between English and Indonesian; (3) interference of native language; and (4) lack of practices and exposures in English pronunciation.

All English departments provide the listening courses that must be studied by their students. In fact, the students often find difficulties in understanding the listening texts so that their listening comprehension becomes low. This condition also happens to the students of English department of UNHASY. One of the causes of it is the teaching strategy for listening which is not appropriate. Therefore, the researcher implemented frontloading strategy for teaching listening in this study. The purpose of this study was to know whether or not frontloading strategy influenced the students’ listening comprehension. The research method used was quasi experiment with the design of pretest posttest nonequivalent control group. The population and the sample of the research were the two classes of the second semester students of English education department of UNHASY in the academic year of 2018/2019. After the implementation of frontloading strategy in experimental class and direst listening in control class, the students’ post listening comprehensions were compared by using independent sample t-test whose result was that sig. (2-tailed) (0.004) was lower than 0.05. In short, it is concluded that frontloading strategy influences students’ listening comprehension.

The purpose of this article is to investigate the correlation between students’ understanding in semanticsand their ability to appreciate English proverbs at the seventh semester of English department students in Lancang Kuning University, Pekanbaru. Based on the findings and discussion in chapter IV, the result was in line with the researcher’s hypothesis that there was significant correlation between students’ understanding in semantics and their ability to appreciate English at the Seventh Semester of English Education Department Faculty of Education and Teachers Training University of Lancang Kuning. The result of semantics test could be categorized “very good” because the percentage of the students who got very good category was 75%. Whereas, the result of English proverbs test could be categorized “very good” because of the percentage of the students who got very good category was 72%. It was found that the more increases semantics score, the more increases also English proverbs score. So, it was strong influence for variable X which was semantics to influence variable Y which was English proverbs and vice versa. The data reveals that the correlation coefficient was 0.846 which was close to +1.00, it meant that there was positive correlation between students’ understanding in semantics and their ability to appreciate English proverbs.

This study describes the dominant errors committed by the first and third-semester students of the English Education Department of UII. The aim of this research is to describe the dominant errors committed by the first and third-semester students of UII. This is a qualitative research study. The researcher collects the data through an audio recording, listens and makes the script from the audio recording, read the script and identifies the data, selects the data, and classifies the silent pause of error and filled the pause. The researcher analyses the data uses the theory of Clark and Clark and Dulay. The result indicates that the total errors are 84 utterances containing 108 silent pauses for the first semester and 32 Utterances containing 34 silent pauses for the third semester, and 51 utterances containing 57 filled pauses for the first-semester student and 89 utterances containing 124 filled pauses for the third semester students. Silent pause is the dominant errors made by the first semester students and filled pause is the dominant errors made by the third semester student. The error sources are cognitive reason and situational anxiety.

Online learning is a new policy from the minister of education and culture in the midst of the covid-19 pandemic. It is the first time for english students in IKIP PGRI Bojonegoro do the online learning in speaking class. Speaking is one of the important skills learned in english language. In this era the technology is developing rapidly. Many applications that can support online learning, One of them is whatsapp. Whatsapp is a simple, secure, and reliable messaging application. This research discuss about students’ perception on the use of whatsapp group in speaking class. The study aim to find out english students perception on the use of whatsapp group in speaking class and to find out english students challenges on the use of whatsapp group in speaking class. This research includes qualitative research with descriptive qualitative. The participant of this research was 35 students of the thirth semester of English Education Department academic year of 2020/2021 in IKIP PGRI Bojonegoro. The techniques of collecting data are interview, questionnaire and documentation. In this research researcher analyzed data by data reduction, data display and drawing conclusions. The result show that students perception on the use of whatsapp group in speaking class is less interesting and less effective. Their challenges on the use of whatsapp group are internet connection, feeling bored and lazy, difficult to understand the materials and the time is not according to the schedule. online learning using whatsapp group in speaking class needs more interesting learning activity.

This research tried to find out how is students’ speaking ability at University Muhammadiyah Sorong. This research used qualitative method and descriptive design. The population is students of English department at University of Muhammadiyah Sorong in 2013/2014 academic year. The writer took only 30 students randomly of fifth semester as the sample of this research. The writer also prepared some topics that chosen by the students and used voice recorder as the research instruments to measure students’ speaking ability.The result of this research revealed that the students’ speaking ability at University of Muhammadiyah Sorong was poor. The detail aspect of speaking occurred, Pronunciation was good, Grammar was fair, Vocabulary was fair, Fluency was poor, and Comprehension was poor which based on 30 respondents of fifth semester of English Education Department at University of Muhammadiyah Sorong.

The purpose of this research is to identify the types of slip of the tongue made by English Education Study Program students of Bengkulu University in their proposal seminar presentation and to identify the dominant type of slip of the tongue made by English Education Study Program students of Bengkulu University in their proposal seminar presentation. The samples of this study were 5 Students English Education Study Program students of Bengkulu University who carry out seminars of each student proposal on February 23rd, 2018 and on April 27th, 2018. The instrument used in this research was the writer herself. The data were collected by using documentary method. To analyze the data, the qualitative and quantitative methods were applied. The results of this research show that there are 60 data which are taken from the proposal seminar presentation of English students. In those data there are 6 of 8 types of slip of the tongue found in students’ presentation; Anticipation, Perseveration, Exchange, Substitution, Addition and Deletion. The dominant type occurred was Substitution

This study is aimed at describing students’ ability in writing descriptive texts viewed from analytic assessment presented by O’Malley and Pierce, involving composing, style, sentence formation, usage and mechanics. The study was conducted by applying a descriptive quantitative-qualitative method. The data were taken from 15 descriptive texts made by the second semester students of English Department, Pancasakti University Tegal 2018/2019. The result of the study shows that there are 33.4% of the students are “good”, 40% of the students are “fair”, and 26.6% of the students are “bad”. The students mean score is 65 (fair), and the scores of each components are as follows: composing is 71.6, style is 66.2, sentence formation is 60, usage is 55.7, and mechanics is 55. The result also shows that the texts are developed trough correct generic structure involving identification and descriptions. The writer suggested that the students need to study harder and practice more frequently to increase their writing ability, specifically in mechanics as their weakness in writing.

Machine Translation (MT) refers to automatically trying to translate words, phrases, text, or speech from one language to another (Arnold et al., 1994). This study aims to analyze English as Foreign Language (EFL) students’ perceptions on utilizing machine translation (MT) in translating words, phrases, text, or speech. This research used descriptive qualitative method, 13 EFL students as respondents using this type of technology were described and analyzed. Data were gained from the analysis of the translation quality supported by machine translation procedures and questionnaires to 13 English students in translation subject. The results showed that, EFL students in the sixth and seventh semester of English education department of Megarezky University in translating words, phrases, texts, paragraphs had to recheck and rearrange to get a good translation by their own understandings. Machine Translation (MT) becomes another option to recognize the meaning of foreign language. Machine Translation can be used as dictionary as well. MT is incredibly useful and helpful, it can provide a general description to the users, it gives an inspiration or consideration to the users to understand the meaning.

This research investigates the language learning strategies used by English students of Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP, hereafter) of Universitas Jambi. This research employed the Strategy Inventory for Language Learning (SILL) questionaires designed by Oxford (1990) to obtain data from 85 students of the fifth semester class 2015 studying at the English Department. The statistical analysis of the data revealed that students opted for metacognitive (Part D), social (Part F), cognitive (Part B), compensation (Part C), memory (Part A), and affective (Part E)  strategies respectively as the most strategies they have used most in their language learning process. This finding shows that teachers can actually assess their students’ view about their learning strategies. This finding implies that teachers should be aware that students have different preferences to learn so that teachers need to be prepared to conduct variety of teaching strategies in their classrooms as well as emphasing the importance of learners’ metacognitive strategies without leaving out the other learning strategies. ABSTRAKRiset ini menginvestigasi strategi pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris yang digunakan oleh mahasiswa-mahasiswa Prodi Bahasa Inggris pada Fakultas Keguruan dan Ilmu Pendidikan (FKIP), Universitas jambi. Riset sekarang ini menggunakan kuestioner the Strategy Inventory for Language Learning (SILL) yang didesain oleh Oxford (1990) untuk memperoleh data dari 85 mahasiswa-mahasiswa semester 5 kelas 2015 yang belajar pada Prodi Bahasa Inggris.  Data statitis menunjukkan mahasiswa-mahasiwa memilih strategi metacognitive (Part D), social (Part F), cognitive (Part B), compensation (Part C), memory (Part A), dan affective (Part E) berturut-turut sebagai strategi yang paling sering digunakan dalam proses pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris mereka. Temuan ini menunjukkan bahwa guru dapat menilai pandangan siswa-siswa tentang strategi pembelajaran bahasa. Temuan ini juga mengimplikasikan bahwa guru semestinya menyadari bahwa siswa memiliki pilihan-pilihan yang berbeda dalam belajar sehingga guru perlu mempersiapkan berbagai macam variasi strategi mengajar dalam kelas sekaligus menekankan pentingnya strategi metacognitive pada siswa tanpa mengabaikan strategi pembelajaran bahasa lainnya.  How to Cite: Wulandari, B.
