Purpose. Presentation of the current situation to the extent of touristic arrivals to Antarctica, in view of measuring the scale and structure of incoming tourism recorded at the Henryk Arctowski Polish Antarctic Station (King George Island, South Shetland Islands). Method. The number of persons arriving to the Arctowski Station was measured and subjects interviewed according to a standardised questionnaire. Findings. Research has indicated that there is constant interest in visiting Antarctica. These travellers are mainly people from Europe and North America, in particular seniors, with higher education, professionally active or retired, affluent and usually travelling individually. Research and conclusions limitations. Carrying out measurements regarding the scale and structure of incoming tourism is connected with various limitations, including the way in which such measurements are conducted, the access and quality of source materials or the human factor, i.e. interviewers. Practical implications. This article refers to the latest data concerning the number of persons arriving to the Arctowski Station and the structure of the tourist traffic, whichconstitute basic information for, among others, the tour operators. Originality. The problem involving the scale and structure of tourism, especially in polar regions, is still current and extremely significant due to the importance of the global ecosystem. Research on the structure of incoming tourism to Antarctica, according to the measurements at the Station, has been recently conducted and presented for the first time. Type of paper. In the article, the results of the authors research, similar to those relevant from literature, are presented.

Purpose – the main goal of tourism clusters is to attract more tourists to the region and improve the quality of regional tourism products. The aim of this paper is to verify whether the initiative of the Eastern Poland Tourism Brands Cluster has contributed to the development of tourism services and products offered by local firms. Research methodology – to achieve the goal, we described and evaluated cluster activities based on secondary sources of data and questionnaire interviews conducted with the representatives of entities involved in the cluster. We used the modified COO effect model to evaluate the services according to the following criteria: modernity, diversity, prestige and quality. We employed a 5-item Likert scale in our questionnaire. Findings – the results of the analysis showed that despite the increased recognition of tourist brands and products, the cluster did not survive. This experience shows that clusters operating in the tourism industry have less chance of survival than industrial clusters. Research limitations – main limitation of the research is the scarcity of source materials and a low number of surveys returned by cluster members. Personal meetings with respondents would add valuable information. Practical implications – the results of research can be used as an indication for the development and maintenance of tourist cluster initiatives on the market. In recent years, more and more studies focus on the development prospects of tourism clusters. Originality – until now, however, no study on cluster performance has employed the COO effect model or its derivatives, which makes our paper novel in this aspect.

Purpose: The aim of the represented study was to model the behaviour of two-layer combined material during its manufacturing. Design/methodology/approach: The model of material layers joining by means of calender method is built in LS-DYNA software on the basis of finite element method. Using the developed model the study of stress and strain condition changes is carried out. Numerical modelling was carried out for two types of two-layer combined materials in similar conditions. First combination was of high-density polyethylene top layer and aluminium foil bottom layer. Second combination was of high-density polyethylene top layer and low- density polyethylene bottom layer. Joining materials had equal thicknesses. Findings: During formation of two-layer combined materials the primary strain always occurs at the bottom plate of the bottom layer. However, the maximum plastic strain will be represented for the layer with lower elastic modulus value. At the point of the highest loading applied to the two-layer combined material the elasticity condition is changed to the plasticity one and the yield process is registered. Practical implications: Multi-layer combined materials are some of the most advanced types of materials. The quality of the joining of the layers, the strains and the stresses arising in their manufacturing process are the main causes of low interlayer strength. It leads to easy exfoliation and destruction of the material. The results of the study may be used to improve the quality of multi-layer combined materials. Originality/value: For the first time the model was developed for the determination of strains and stresses arising during the formation of multi-layer combined materials by means of calendering method. The calculations of the stresses and strains distribution dynamics for two-layer combined materials are represented for polymer-metal and polymer-polymer layers combinations. The results of the study may be of interest to specialists in the field of multi-layer combined materials designing and manufacturing.

Purpose: The aim of the represented study was to model the impact of temperature gradient on content of polymer ampoule during its forming. Design/methodology/approach: The model of polymer ampoules forming is built in SolidWorks software on the basis of finite element method. Using the developed model the study of temperature condition changes is carried out. Numerical modelling was carried out for two types of polymer packaging materials – polypropylene and polyvinylchloride – in similar conditions. Findings: During polymer ampoule forming the highest temperature of liquid is obtained at the bottom of it. The most effective packaging method is to form the ampoule from polypropylene by means of aluminium die. Investigation results have shown that the highest obtained liquid temperature has linear dependence from initial one. Linear coefficients of heating were evaluated for polypropylene (equal to 0.72) and polyvinylchloride (equal to 0.58). Practical implications: Decrease of initial liquid temperature value gives an opportunity to expand the range of products allowed to be packed in polymer ampoules in represented method. Safe conditions for packaging of liquid products in polymer ampoules are formulated, The results of the study may be used to improve the quality of liquid products packaging in polymer ampoules. Originality/value: For the first time the model was developed for determination of liquid heating degree during its packaging in polymer ampoules. The calculations of the temperature distribution are represented for polypropylene and polyvinylchloride ampoules forming by means of aluminium and ceramic dies. The results of the study may be of interest to specialists in the field of polymer packaging manufacturing for food or pharmaceutical industry.

Purpose – The purpose of the study is to improve the quality of alumina-containing sinter produced in a rotary kiln. Simulating sintering furnace assessment of technical solutions aimed at creating optimal phase composition of clinker. Design/methodology/approach – The computer model of the sintering furnace is developed. Influence of characteristics of material streams on thermal processes in the furnace was considered. Balance of energy, including heat conductivity, convection and radiant heat exchange has been solved in a stable state. Between actual and calculated variables of work of the furnace, good correlation was observed. Findings – The evaluation of the effect of increasing primary air and fuel burner extension to changes in temperature of the material. The modeling found that the most effective solution to reduce the temperature of the sinter is lengthening fuel burner to 5 m. Practical implications – The model can be applied to analyze and optimize the alteration of temperatures of materials and gases in an industrial furnace under various conditions. Originality/value – The article provides new information for specialists in the production of alumina. For the first time shows the influence of cooling conditions on the alumina-containing sinter quality. According to the results of computer modeling, it has been established that for creating of optimal cooling conditions of the sinter in the furnace, the length of coal burner must be not less than 5 m.

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to evaluate the changes in descriptive sensory properties and overall consumer acceptability of soymilk prepared from roasted soybeans.Design/methodology/approachIn total, 12 purposively selected post graduate students majoring in Food Science conducted descriptive sensory analysis after being trained for 18 h in sensory analysis, while 75 untrained students conducted consumer acceptability test of soymilk prepared by roasting soybeans at a temperature of 110°C for 20, 40, 60, 80 and 100 min and at 120°C for 20 min.FindingsResults have revealed that roasting soybeans improved sensory properties by significantly (p<0.05) decreasing the objectionable green, beany flavours and increasing sweet taste, viscosity and roasted flavour. Furthermore, results from the principal component analysis revealed that aroma and sweet taste were the most critical sensory attributes. In addition, it was found out that soymilk samples prepared by roasting soybeans at 110°C for 40 and 60 min and at 120°C for 20 min were significantly more acceptable than the control soymilk.Research limitations/implicationsThe participants in this study were from one locality and predominantly soybean consuming community and therefore there is need to conduct the study in a different locality in order to validate the study findings.Practical implicationsThe study can assist small scale processors that might not have access to lipoxygenase-free soybeans and other technologies for improving the quality of soymilk.Social implicationsThe study can be used as a guide for connecting the food processers with the external world of consumption.Originality/valueFor the first time, the study findings have demonstrated that controlled soybean roasting can be a useful strategy for improving soymilk sensory properties and consumer acceptability. The findings in this study can be usefully used in the quality control of soy bean-based products.

The subject of this article is the reproductive health of women with disabilities. Based on the literature of the subject, a general analysis of problems that may occur in this area in relation to physical (motor and sensory) and intellectual disability has been made.. Issues such as; the biological basis of fertility, the course of menstruation, pregnancy and childbirth, the process of sexual reactions, contraception, menopause, as well as participation in examinations are discussed. The authors also point to difficulties and disorders, explaining their possible, mostly biological, causes. The article also analyzes experiences of women with various disabilities related to the access and quality of health services in the field of reproductive health. A special source of such experiences, obtained in the course of numerous explorations, is the relationship with specialists. Significant categories of experiences were selected and illustrated as a result of review analysis. At the end of the work referring to the postulates formulated by women, general practical implications have been presented, which are important for the quality of meeting health needs of people with disability.

Purpose The shortage of doctor of philosophy (PhD)–level applicants to fill academic and research positions in communication sciences and disorders (CSD) programs calls for a detailed examination of current CSD PhD educational practices and the generation of creative solutions. The intended purposes of the article are to encourage CSD faculty to examine their own PhD program practices and consider the perspectives of recent CSD PhD graduates in determining the need for possible modifications. Method The article describes the results of a survey of 240 CSD PhD graduates and their perceptions of the challenges and facilitators to completing a PhD degree; the quality of their preparation in research, teaching, and job readiness; and ways to improve PhD education. Results Two primary themes emerged from the data highlighting the need for “matchmaking.” The first time point of needed matchmaking is prior to entry among students, mentors, and expectations as well as between aspects of the program that can lead to students' success and graduation. The second important matchmaking need is between the actual PhD preparation and the realities of the graduates' career expectations, and those placed on graduates by their employers. Conclusions Within both themes, graduate's perspectives and suggestions to help guide future doctoral preparation are highlighted. The graduates' recommendations could be used by CSD PhD program faculty to enhance the quality of their program and the likelihood of student success and completion. Introduction: A barrier to local investigator-led research in low income settings, is the limited availability of personnel with appropriate research skills or qualifications to conduct the type of research required for evidence-informed policy making to improve access and quality of health care. In response to this, Fiji National University’s College of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences in Fiji, collaborated with academics based at the University of Auckland, New Zealand to deliver a series of research capacity development workshops in Fiji. Methods: Participants who attended any of the nine workshops (n=123) were contacted via email to take part in a brief survey regarding their perceptions of the effectiveness of the research capacity building workshops. Of the possible 123 participants, 80% (n=76) completed the questionnaire.  Results: Findings demonstrate that the majority of participants reported that they had gained research skills from the workshops (75%) including proposal development skills (68%) and knowledge of appropriate research methods (59%). Furthermore, 70% agreed that the workshops built their research confidence.  Since attending a workshop, 18% of respondents had successfully applied and received funding for research grants and/or fellowships.  Barriers to conduct research included workload (75%), lack of research knowledge, experience or skills (51%), and lack of institutional support (41%). Suggestions for future workshops included: more focus on data analysis, regular courses rather than ‘one offs’, and preparation of research findings (e.g. publications). Conclusion: Our findings indicate that research workshops of this nature may increase individual research capabilities but sustained, locally led initiatives, backed by institutional and supplementary technical support are essential.
