The aim of the article is to present the assistance aid and forms of support for prisoners undergoing the process of social reintegration in a religious community. A special area of values is the inclusion of the sustainable development principle in the scope of activities aimed at the reintegration process, organized mainly based on the applied subsidiarity principle. The article uses sociological qualitative methods, mainly the case study method based on the sociological observation of the convict and the person supervising him/her, which is included in the category of assistance support. The employment contract of the convicted person in charity work in the parish and spontaneous interviews conducted in the context of the activities of the supervisors were analysed. The result of the conducted observations and analyses is the determination of the purposefulness of the sustainable development principle in the reintegration process. This detailed social principium in the perspective of moderate anthropocentrism strengthens the reintegration process the most by optimizing the working time that a convict in the parish can perform for the environment. The working time saving index, which is the conclusion of the analyses, allows to expand the functionality of the parish as a social institution and improves the chain of goals pursued by the convict. The value of the natural environment does not play a significant role in these activities, because in the perspective of moderate anthropocentrism, the most important value is the person and activities aimed at reintegration in social life. The main form of support for an assistant is accompanying and enabling responsible use of parish resources.

Sustainable development is becoming a very important issue in the 21st century. Facing global changes such as the global warming, global climate change, as well as other pressing issue, all spheres of economy and social life need to take part in mitigating them and preventing disasters from happening. Our article studies the role of the small business in the above processes and the place of the small business in promoting sustainable development through its actions, public and social awareness and responsibility. We show how even small and medium enterprises can become a decisive power in tackling the climate change and promoting green thinking and sustainable awareness. This can be achieved through enhancing social responsibility of business companies which can greatly contribute to supporting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) and promoting sustainable economic growth.

Under the current resilience development framework, which is mainly based on urban communities, it is difficult to meet the needs of the vulnerable populations in poor villages. This article aims to explore a specific and operable guidance framework suitable for the resilient development of Chinese poor villages after disasters from the perspective of social equity. The framework will help guide the sustainable development of poor villages after disasters and also provide a reference for the resilience of other similar vulnerable areas. When integrating climate change response and disaster risk management to explore sustainable development in poor villages, the essence is to explore the resilience development framework focused on the construction of resilient communities in poor villages. We take the recovery and reconstruction of poor villages after the Wenchuan earthquake in 2008 as an example. Through the analysis of the effects of post-disaster recovery and reconstruction, we found that although poor communities have made significant achievements since the earthquake, there are still many aspects that need to be improved, including social life systems, economic production systems, and natural ecosystems. Therefore, we comprehensively analyzed the characteristics of poor socio-economic conditions, the complex ecological environment, and the low cultural level of residents in poor villages. Furthermore, this study followed the principle of “Build back better” (BBB) and conducted an in-depth study of the framework for the resilience of poor villages. In terms of risk reduction, it is recommended to improve structural resilience from guarantee of preferential prices and selection of environmentally friendly materials, avoid risk and villagers’ participation in the formulation of general plans, and promote disaster prevention and mitigation capabilities from risk prediction and curriculum development. In terms of community recovery, it is suggested to promote community economics and victims’ livelihoods by promoting industrial transformation and sustainable livelihoods and promote social and psychological health development from social relations and psychological rehabilitation. In terms of efficient implementation, specific improvements include the improvement of public participation systems and the establishment of coordination offices and sound institutional mechanisms, the development of community standards and the introduction of financial support policies, the improvement of laws and regulations, and the improvement of monitoring and evaluation from dynamic monitoring and mass satisfaction surveys. It is important to guide the sustainable development of vulnerable communities by constructing a post-disaster resistant development framework based on BBB principles.

At the turn of 20th and 21st century political activities are being inspired by two main ideas: the concept of ‘civil society’ and ‘sustainable development’. The latter has recently become a background of the United Nations strategy to support international cooperation regarding social and ecological problems, in particular to eradicate poverty. The UN’s ac- tivity is reviewed by the World Council of Churches, the biggest ecumenical organization. The WCC, when declaring its support to all initiatives striving to eradicate poverty and to foster peaceful political relations, suggests its own concept of ‘sustanaible community’ and the concept of ‘economy of life’. In this sense the ecumenical movement distinguishes itself from activities of secular political actors and imposes on Christians a task to promote new ideas and models of social life, inspired by the biblical teachings. This article defines the notion of sustainable development and discusses the main stages of its unfolding. Furthermore, the paper highlights the World Council of Churches’ criticism of the concept of sustainable development and scrutinizes a contribution of the WCC to the global debate on new political and social philosophy

Charles Tilly (2004) explained that social movements could make constant campaigns for and by people to reach their proper needs and rights. People may forget the rights they enjoy now are fruits of social movements. The rights are not directly and willingly given to the people but the influence of social movements causes them to reach every ordinary men and women. If there is slavery in the society that one suppress the other in the name of caste, money, status, etc then we cannot claim there is sustainable development. The riches, the advancements, the merits of any systems remind everyone that there are social movements which could render selfless services towards this attainment. Kanyakumari is one among the districts of Tamilnadu, where the contribution of social movements towards the development is high that this district stands first in education. Not only in education but also in every walks of life the leaders and members of various social movements set standards and worked for it continuously. This paper analyses how far the social traits of leaders and members of today’s social movements in Kanyakumari district make impact for the sustainable development in the district. It is thus witnessed that the social life in the district is empowered by the social movements and even the ordinary fishermen, masons, farmers and gardeners could get a decent life.

Abstract Tourism is a phenomenon which affects the entire economic and social life, and the implications of its development can be observed in different spheres (economic, psychological, behavioral, and others). Taking into account the simplistic interpretation of the economic development of tourism on the one hand, and social development of tourism on the other hand, it is justified to highlight the problem of so-called “social costs of tourism” as the need for more precise determination of the character of the consequences of its development. In the field of “social costs of tourism” there is a need to the overall tourist development closer approaches and with increased responsibility. This tendency is particularly noticeable in the last decades of the 20th and the early 21st century, when tourism has entered a phase of maturity, which basically requires a change in its interpretation and treatment. The aim of this paper is to identify, evaluate and predict factors that support the sustainable development of tourism in Istria (Croatia). The research used comparative and SWOT analysis, and the results of the research will confirm the application elements of the concept of sustainable development in tourism of Istria, which is introduced with different intensity activities of all stakeholders in the surroundings.

The novelty of this paper resides in the fact that its co-authors analyze processes of urban formation and architectural development from the perspective of the city’s performance of social functions. The co-authors study religion as a social institution and the role that it plays in the emergence of medieval cities and in the arrangement of external and internal environments of human beings in present-day cities. Their role is determined as innovative. The performance by the institution of religion of its historic function is studied from the standpoint of the concept of sustainable development. The methodology of this research project is based on the retrospective analysis of historical documents, the comparative analysis of built-up areas, housing planning in traditional and contemporary societies, and the systems concept. As a result of this research, the co-authors have successfully identified several features typical for the operation of the institution of church in a medieval city. The co-authors have analyzed the way the Christian ideology determines the interior and the architectural landscape. The co-authors outline the areas for the application of their research findings. The co-authors believe that these findings must be taken account of in the course of restoration performed in a contemporary megalopolis and in the process of study of the history of urban settlements.

Sustainable development is considered as one of the vital challenges of the 21st century for humanity. The COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted economic and social life, forcing governments and businesses to reconsider their priorities. There are rare empirical studies on the national innovation system and its relationship to sustainability development for emerging countries. This paper aims at shedding light on how mission-oriented policies have marked sustainable regional development and innovation in Latin America. The present study presents the capabilities that could support the improvement of the national innovation system and, as a consequence, sustainability development. To understand how Latin American countries act on innovation and sustainable development initiatives, two global rankings in these areas, The Global Innovation Index 2020 and The Sustainable Development Report 2020, were analyzed. The results indicate some obstacles must be overcome such as the high levels of social inequality and poverty that still constitute significant challenges for this region. Today’s biggest challenges are facing a pandemic situation and guaranteeing economic development that allows the underprivileged to escape poverty without dooming future generations to an even more degraded environment than the current one. Innovation continues to play a critical role in the transition toward a more sustainable world.

The article is dedicated to analyzing the philosophical and educational grounds for the sustainable development of humankind. The growth of human civilization is already recognized to have its strict natural limits, and that has resulted in the formulation of the concept of sustainable development as a strategy for the future of humankind. However, there is some discrepancy noted in the concept of sustainable development – in particular, it is the lack of fundamental consistency between its ‘economic’ and ‘ecological’ components. It is insufficient to consider the nature being valuable only as a base of resources, as means for social and economic development. As sustainability could only be based on some minimal conditions for living within the regenerative capacity of the planet’s ecosystems, it is evident that the current crisis is a crisis of senses, values and lifestyle no less than it is the crisis of industry and social demography. Sustainability is argued to require a new kind of society that would be able to decrease its growth and its excessive consumption habits. The article analyzes the concept of degrowth as a kind of more radical and practical supplement to the rather abstract idea of sustainable development: degrowth is defined as an ecologically sound development. That concept is also shown to present new challenges for higher education as a social institution tasked with constituting a human personality capable of living in a environmentally sound future. Thus, higher education is faced today with the challenge of shaping out not only knowledge and skills, but values and behavior patterns as well, by giving more attention to general culture, critical thinking and creativity and by increasing social responsibility for environmental protection and adopting lifestyle practices of degrowth and reduced consumption.
