Insomnia and pain coexist with chronic diseases, especially in the elderly, who are therefore the largest group taking hypnotics and analgesics. For this reason, seniors are at high risk of abusing these medications, leading to dangerous and unpredictable clinical outcomes. The article provides a literature review using the Pubmed, Medline, Embase and Google Scholar databases. The articles were analysed using the following keywords: drug abuse, sleeping pills, painkillers, benzodiazepines, opioids. The article presents the characteristics of medical substances belonging to sleeping pills and painkillers, taking into account the consequences of their misuse. Hypnotics and pain relievers, especially benzodiazepines and opioids, are the most abused drug classes in the elderly. In the case of hypnotics, apart from benzodiazepines, these are zolpidem and zopiclone or trazodone, and in the case of analgesics, codeine, tramadol, morphine or oxycodone and also paracetamol and NSAIDs. The problem of abuse and misuse of hypnotics and analgesics in the geriatric population is still growing and therefore more and more attention should be paid to this problem. Although this type of treatment is important to maintain a good quality of life for the elderly, proper education among staff, patients and their carers is also needed. Proper information provided by medical personnel plays an important role in this matter.

The first wave of the Covid-19 pandemic hit India in January 2020 when the first confirmed case was reported at a general hospital of Kerala. Since then, the number of reported cases kept on increasing at a steady pace, we saw deaths, rise, fall and stagnancy in the number of cases in India while the figures of deaths reported remained worrisome. While India is currently battling with the deadly double mutant variant of the virus, the present critical review is an attempt to study, analyse and understand the need of catering to the needs of geriatric population, especially in a collectivistic culture like India, where elderly issues, psychological difficulties, and coping mechanism takes a back seat while there is constant fear of leading a healthy life especially in the testing times of a national pandemic, COVID-19. This critical review is an attempt to highlight the various issues dealt by the average Indian elderly, their lifestyle after retirement, sustaining means of livelihood in times of uncertainty and keeping a positive mindset for a better quality of life. This paper also attempts to enumerate few strategies required to inculcate a sense of life satisfaction and improved quality of life among the elderly.

The dietary habits of people directly impact their health conditions. Especially in elder populations (in 2017, 6.7% of the world’s population was over 65 years of age), these habits could lead to important-nutrient losses that could seriously affect their cognitive and functional state. Recently, a great research effort has been devoted to using different technologies and proposing different techniques for monitoring food-intake. Nevertheless, these techniques are usually generic but make use of the most innovative technologies and methodologies to obtain the best possible monitoring results. However, a large percentage of elderly people live in depopulated rural areas (in Spain, 28.1% of the elderly population lives in this type of area) with a fragile cultural and socioeconomic context. The use of these techniques in these environments is crucial to improving this group’s quality of life (and even reducing their healthcare expenses). At the same time, it is especially challenging since they have very specific and strict requirements regarding the use and application of technology. In this Systematic Literature Review (SLR), we analyze the most important proposed technologies and techniques in order to identify whether they can be applied in this context and if they can be used to improve the quality of life of this fragile collective. In this SLR, we have analyzed 326 papers. From those, 29 proposals have been completely analyzed, taking into account the characteristics and requirements of this population.

For more than a decade, notification systems to support the care of older adults in settings such as hospitals, nursing homes, and homes have been developed. These systems aim to assist in the care process, trying to ensure the safety and wellness of the elderly, and thus to maintain or increase their quality of life. This chapter identifies challenges and areas of opportunity for the implementation of notification systems in these environments, considering a technological perspective. In this work, the authors firstly present a literature review of notification systems in the elderly care environments mentioned above. Subsequently, they propose a taxonomy to classify the reviewed works, and discuss a set of challenges and areas of opportunity that technology can offer in this environment. These areas of opportunity are projected as specific features in each of the identified healthcare environments.

Background:Although anxiety disorders prevalence and incidence decline in later life, anxiety is a major health problem for the elderly. Epidemiology, neurobiology, and treatment of anxiety disorders are poorly studied in the geriatric population. Nevertheless, anxiety has a high impact on functional status and health-related quality of life.Aim:To underline the significant impact of anxiety in the elderly. to discuss the sub-diagnosis and sub-treatment of late-life anxiety and subclinical symptoms. Methods:Literature Review. MEDLINE and PubMed databases searches for peer-reviewed studies, published between 1998 and 2008, using combinations of the Medline Subject Heading terms anxiety, anxiety disorders and old age. Results:There are few studies in the literature addressing this topic. Late-life anxiety has a high prevalence and is associated with increased morbidity, mortality, functional impairment, poorer quality of life and significant societal costs. Clinical studies show that most cases of anxiety disorders in late life are undetected and under-treated. Intervention research in late-life anxiety disorders is lacking. Conclusions:It is extremely important and urgent a more efficacious assessment and management of anxiety disorders in the elderly. It is also fundamental an increased attention to subtreshold anxiety, which will allow an earlier intervention and prevention of new cases of anxiety disorders. Well designed interventions will be capable of reducing the burden, morbidity and incidence of late-life anxiety.
