Influence of orientation of zones of higher hardness of composite layers on their resistance to wear

Purpose: Experimentally substantiate the influence of the orientation of zones of higher hardness on the wear mechanism of contact surfaces. Design/methodology/approach: Forming of variable composition within the working surfaces of parts is a common way to solve the problem of uneven wear. The tests were aimed at determining the characteristics of the layers surfaced with the orientation of the zones of high hardness. For this different tests and measurements were done. Before the test, samples of 45 steel were surfaced with a preliminary application of titanium carbide paste. Findings: As a result of researches it was found that different ways of the orientation of zones of higher hardness have different influences on the characteristics of a surface. The main conclusion is that the transverse orientation of such zones helps to increase the wear resistance of the surface and to save its original relief. Research limitations/implications: The roughness, wear resistance, zonal hardness, and relief of layers surfaced with the orientation of zones of higher hardness were studied. Practical implications: The results obtained are useful in the field of rolling production and mechanical engineering to avoid the uneven wear of parts and as a result to extend the term of their exploitation. Originality/value: In this paper the model concepts of wear process of surfaces with variable composition and measurements of characteristics of surface considering its local hardening are proposed.

When designing the composition and structure of a composite material intended for tribological cooperation, many external and structural factors must be considered. The aim of this research was to compare the tribological properties (wear resistance and friction coefficient) of AlSi7Mg1Sr0.03/SiCp and AlSi7Mg1Sr0.03/GCsf single-reinforced composite layers with AlSi7Mg1Sr0.03/SiCp + GCsf hybrid composite layer formed in sleeves via vertical centrifugal casting. Profilometry enabled quantitative and qualitative analyses to be performed on the wear traces formed on investigated surfaces. The results show that a hybrid composite layer containing spherical glassy carbon particles had a significantly lower and more stable coefficient of friction (μ) and a higher wear resistance compared with single composite layers. The obtained effect was related to the mechanism of vitreous carbon consumption, which was crushed during operation, and then introduced between the cooperating friction surfaces. In this way, it acted as a solid lubricant, which stabilized the coefficient of friction and reduced the wear process.

Diffusion reaction was a crucial route to enhance the wear resistance of Ti-6Al-4V alloys surface. In this work, the Ni/Cu/Ni composite layers were fabricated on the surface of Ti-6Al-4V alloy by electroplate craft, and then different annealing temperatures were applied to further optimize its tribological properties. The diffusion behaviors at various temperatures were systematically analyzed to reveal the physical mechanism of the enhanced tribological properties of the coatings. It was demonstrated that CuxTiy and NixTiy intermetallic compounds with high hardness and strength were produced in the Ni/Cu/Ni coating, which acted as the reinforcing phases and improved the microhardness, reduced the friction coefficient, and lessened the wear rate. Specially, this effect reached the maximum when the annealing temperature was 800 °C, showing excellent wear resistance. This work revealed the relationship between annealing temperatures and tribological properties of the Ni/Cu/Ni coating, and proposed wear mechanism, aiming to improve the surface performance of Ti-6Al-4V alloy by appropriate diffusion behavior.

Coatings with high entropy alloys of the AlCoCrFeNiV system were obtained by selective laser melting on low carbon steel substrates. The effect of the variation of the Fe and V contents as well as the laser processing parameters in the development of the coating were evaluated. The coatings were obtained from the simple powder mixtures of the high purity elemental components in a planetary ball mill. The coatings were obtained by using CO2 laser with a power of 100 W, diameter of 0.16 mm, and scan speed varying from 3 to 12 mm/s. Phase constituents, microstructure and hardness were investigated by XRD, SEM, and microhardness tester, respectively. Wear resistance measurements were carried out by the micro-abrasion method using ball-cratering tests. The coatings presented good adhesion to the substrate and high hardness, of the order of 480 to 650 HV. Most homogeneous coating with nominal composition was obtained by using the higher scan speed, 12 mm/s. Vanadium addition increased hardness and gave rise to a high entropy alloy coating composed by BCC solid solutions. Ball cratering tests conducted on HEA layer showing improvement of material wear resistance, when compared to base substrate, decreasing up to 88% its wear rate, from 1.91x10-6 mm3/Nmm to 0.23x10-6 mm3/Nmm.

AbstractA hard SiC-B4C reinforced composite coating was fabricated by laser alloying of SiC-B4C+Al-Sn-Mo-Y2O3 mixed powders on a Ti-3Al-2V alloy. Al-Sn-Mo mixed powders were first used in the laser alloying technique to improve the wear resistance of titanium alloys. Proper selection of the laser alloying process parameters allows us to obtain a composite coating with a metallurgical combination with substrate. Under the action of Mo, fine particles with high microhardness were produced in the coating matrix and also hindered the formation of adhesion patches and deep plowing grooves during the sliding wear process, leading to the improvement of wear resistance of a titanium alloy substrate surface.
